  1. No problem with raisins but i would limit dried fruit consumption - the calories and sugar really add up fast.
  2. You're amazing for putting this out there! This is so important for people to read and actually pay attention too. So many people think WLS will just fix everything, but as you said, you "did the very hard mental work. I broke addictions to fast food and the sugar." I think your success will be so much better because you have done that work and you know what you are accountable for. I am so excited that you get to start your journey!

  5. I am 7 years out from the Gastric by pass surgery. I have always been fanatical about taking my multivitamin supplements. Originally I didn't it was important to take iron supplements since I was in menopause and felt I was always healthy and never had any iron issues. Well it was approximately 2 years after surgery when I found myself anemic. My doctor did a ferritin (iron) check and found it to be 11 with the low end of normal being 20. Therefore I found myself starting out taking 30mg of iron a day. Three months later they checked the ferritin and it dropped to 9 even though i was taking the supplement . I ended up doubling it to 60, but 3 months later, it was still only 14 slightly higher but not in the range. Fast forward to the present, I now take 120 mg of iron a day and my ferritin level is at approx. remains at approximately 60. It took approximately 1 1/2 years to get my iron in the normal range, but to feel better and lively and not so tired, it is a good ideal to have the iron level at at least 50. My suggestion is to stay on top of it from the beginning.
  6. So only my boss knows I had surgery because we are very close, and she is very good at keeping me sane. But anywho, since I'm ten weeks post op I've lost 50 pounds... I look a lot different and people are wondering what I've been doing. I say diet and excersiize which is true.     Newbeginning who is doing your surgery? We have some great doctors here. Many of my friends have had the surgery. Congrats on having a date! My date came so fast I feel like it was here before I knew it!
  8. Take your time moving to the next phase we all are different, Just because they say 2 weeks your body is the time decider. Go with lighter and less. Just take a little at a time over 30 min. If you are cramped or does that mean you are full stop. This is a pain in the ass to figure out, how much you can handle and how fast took me a long time. No reason to be uncomfortable so let your body tell you.
  9. I've been trying not to get frustrated with stalls and being a slow loser. I'm 5 months out and down 60 pounds. So I'm about half way to my goal. Some weeks I don't lose at all, but my clothes are getting too big, so I know changes are happening. I lost about 30 pounds in the first two months, and then much more slowly. I just need to accept this journey will not be fast, and that's ok. I will get there!

    You sound like a newbie! You sound just like me for the first few months after surgery, before I had restriction at 3 fills. In fact, the first real food I ate was a Burger King cheeseburger! Stayed down just fine, felt just like preband, Fast forward to 3 yrs later. I never followed the rules, ate whatever I wanted (just less of it), lost weight, vomited alot - and then came my band slip about 6 mths ago. After several unfills/fills/tweaks, I find myself with less than optimal restriction. I can eat alot more. And I did. Continued to eat whatever I wanted, and more of it now. Woke up and got on the scale a few weeks ago and gained 16 lbs! It's what happens when you don't follow the rules. I'm on day 3 of the 5 day pouch test. I'm literally starving! I'm so excited cuz today I can have cottage cheese and refried beans! But I'm determined to follow the rules this time. I will still have some goodies in my diet, but I'm moving more towards eating more healthy instead of just "less crap" that I used to put into my body. I refuse to get as fat as I used to be, and that's exactly where I'm headed if I continue with my lifestyle. I actually thru a package of Fritos in the garbage last week - 1 at a time, so that they would get so gunky I wouldn't want to fish them out! Take it from me, who ate whatever sounded good (albeit in very small portions, that's how I lost almost 100 lbs), learn to make healthier choices now. You'll be more successful in the long run. And, if you can eat a whole Whopper, you definately need a fill, girl! Blessings! Marci

    Eating Slowly

    I have my surgery on Monday. I am scared of not being able to slow down too! I am on my preop diet right now, mostly liquids, but I am sucking the bottom out of the protein drinks and other drinks! I know that I wont be as hungry post op as I am now but dang! Can I slow down?? I am going to start trying to practice eating slowly. They say putting the fork down helps and I notice when I talk a lot during a meal, I eat a lot slower. If I am having dinner with a friend and we are talking, I dont eat as fast. Maybe that would help to call someone or talk to someone on a subject you are passionate about. Its all I got right now.. sorry I am not more help. Tammi

    Eating Slowly

    Oh, Bryn.....I have not yet had my surgery, but I SOOOO know how you feel. Every single diet I've been on has left me ravenous between meals and I have always, always, horfed (new word ) my food trying to fill up that hole. I completely agree with Rainy that it is so important to not let yourself get hungry. Keep something small on hand all the time and eat/drink it between your meals so you don't feel that hunger which drives us to eat so fast. The only time I have been successful at diets or controlling my intake was to plan, plan, plan and always have something handy and ready to tide me over or believe you me, I was in line at the closest McDonald's or Taco Bell!! I have been researching the band for 10 years and have heard a couple of times the 'pencil easer' analogy. I have also visited four nutritionists through my journey and all of then said that is ridiculous, way too small. They also said thumbnail, tip of your thumb, or for us mommies, toddler-sized....how you used to cut up your child's food when they were little. The one most important thing they all taught me was to above all, be PRESENT when you're eating. Most times we're not. We're watching TV, talking, doing something, walking around and snacking while preparing. They say to be really present and be aware of what you're putting in your mouth, enjoy it, savor it, put your fork down, enjoy the eating experience. I know I don't do that....when I have to actually put this into practice, it'll be tough. I just 'horfed' my late lunch again today because I waited too long and thought I was going to die of massive starvation, so I Hoover'ed through my Q'doba *snicker*. Best of luck to you, Bryn....hang in there. I think it's gonna be a real learning curve, but honestly, I think you will automatically adjust after time. Your body will learn to slow down and find it's 'after' pace....

    Insurance Mess! :-/

    You've certainly had a lot on your shoulders, but I'm glad it worked out in the end. I haven't had experience with Cobra, but one of my Kaiser classmates did. She ended up being laid off and losing her coverage like a week after we graduated from the six month classes. Kaiser worked with her to fast track her through the rest of the program, and she was able to get the coverage continued through Cobra to go on and have the surgery. It worked out well for her.     Everybody is different some loose fast and others slow at 5 weeks I lost 35lbs not including the pre-op remember to do ur walks and take in ur liquids plus if I get constipated trust me I will see a stall so make sure u got fiber in ur food choice

    Awaiting op 5th Aug 09

    I'm a nurse and am getting banded in 2 days:eek:. I have told a selected few people I am having a hiatus hernia repair and that I have to lose weight because my cholesterol is high and my fasting blood sugar was higher than normal...which is true.The only people who know whats happening are my 2 daughters. The reason I said I was having a hernia repair is that so many people at work are scathing & judgemental about others who have been banded. These people are supposed caring professionals!!!!:cursing: Plus the scars are the same as banding scars. I am a little concerned about having to explain what I'm eating initially when I return to work as I will still be on slops. Arh! I'll think of some white lie. It's none of their business & I am the one who is doing something about staying alive & healthy to enjoy a fantastic future.:tongue2: I brought in a certificate from the Dr for 2 weeks off...no explaination needed.     How Mobile Will I Be?

    I went shopping with my sister 3 days post op. I sat and watched her a lot, but I was okay. She was here to "take care of me" after surgery, but yet I still felt like I had to entertain her. I drove her to airport at day 5. Then went home and back to bed for about a week. Seriously, though, I had no complications from the surgery, no vomiting, no nausea, no pain. I was just really tired which lasted until I got to soft foods. That said, I'm not sure I could have handled mass transit -- especially the trains in NYC. Too many people moving too fast, too much jostling, too many stairs. Suggest you taxi to and from the theater. Have fun!

  18. Hello BariatricPal Friends! It's been close to 4 years since I've posted on here and didn't realize this site was still kicking! Anyway, I'm here to tell you about my story about me and my Lap-Band. I've had my Lap-Band for 2 and a half years before I had revision surgery because mine slipped due to me losing too much weight and my adjustments were very frequent. Before revision surgery, I was down 120lbs. After revision, I haven't gone back to the doctor. The last four years of my life have been a roller coaster. I'm close to my starting weight before starting my journey in 2013. Well after getting married, my daughter being born and fast forward to 2017, I'm back where I started before getting weight loss surgery... Crazy huh? It's not a good feeling by any means that's for sure. I could sit here all night and give a list of excuses. The biggest area of my problems was in my marriage (currently getting divorced). My significant other was against my surgery after my revision and it was a downward spiral from there emotionally, mentally and spiritually among other martial issues that hindered my weight. I got into bad habits again and just felt like my self worth and self esteem was non exist. I picked up all my weight I worked so hard to lose. Worst feeling in the world and feel like my surgery wasn't worth it and that I'm just another lap band patient that picked all their weight back up! Well now going through the motions of a divorce and will be putting it in the past once everything is settled, I've started to get back in the groove of things and I'm getting back to my old self again of taking control and have already seen weight loss and have seen my Lap Band doctor. I'm glad to be back on track and I can't wait to see the what future holds! -I'm a 5 year veteran with plenty of experience with the lap band so if anyone needs advice or wants to ask questions let me know! I used to be very active on this site! -Amine

    Whats the longest you've been STUCK?

    OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People....this is NOT GOOD. You SHOULD NOT even be getting stuck once a week, much less every day. You have the potential to really screw up yourself AND your band. In case you haven't figured it out yet, THE BAND DOES WORK!!! Some people lose very slowly, others quiet fast. It doesn't matter...this is the REST OF YOUR LIFE we're talking about. If it takes 3 years, it really doesn't matter. Do NOT end up with a slip or a tear or erosion as a result of too much PB'ing! It's just not worth it. I mean....if anyone can even imagine what Hollie was going through during the 36 hours her stomach was so swollen, you will understand. Or check out many of the bandsters here on this forum who said "I knew I was a little tight, but wanted to keep losing." See how they enjoyed their revision surgery--more money, more time off work, more anesthesia, more pain, more "shoulda, coulda, wouldas." Get some Fluid taken out of your band, and take it easy.
  20. I am only 1 month post op... so far this journey has been by far better than anything I could have expected. I have lost about 25 lbs ( including the pre-op shake time) and feel so good. my only complaint is having to eat slow... I work at school.. (schools train you to eat FAST) and I have worked here 23 years.. so I naturally eat very fast. Slowing down has been the hardest thing for me. I would do this over in a New York minute!!! I just hate this was not an option for me until now... wish I could have done it 15 years ago!! Rhonda

    I am afraid to eat

    There's a difference in degree between "afraid" and "apprehensive"...the new & unknown are matters we all process differently. It's good to hear your liquid-phase is going so well. I'm not sure what you mean by "get sick".....if you mean hurl up whatever puree you tried to gag down too rapidly, the very act of learning how to eat in a new way will be enjoyable. At least for myself, learning how to actually control not only what but how fast and when I eat, was a tremendous discovery. Don't be afraid, you can do a lot of new things in this postOp world. Eventually you will likely come to want to give puree a try....and there is a whole new experience to enjoy. cheers on your journey
  22. I'm almost 3 months out. No problem, eating small amounts slowly etc. Minor indigestion problems... Until today I ate a sausage too fast, and I vomited. It came up red. (now I had had some ketchup on the sausage, so I'm hoping it was that).. It was, however, a very bright red and blood-like color. Is it possible to tear something this far out? What symptoms will I get if I've really damaged something here?

    calorie intake

    Thanks vinesqueen and jqpublic for responding. I am not losing as fast as most of you did in the beginning, but it's still coming off. I'm down 13 lbs. in 3 weeks. I reinjured myself when I bent over and stretched at the same time to pick up a toy off the floor. My doc said it's probably a pulled muscle, but something tells me it's not. It's been 6 days and I still hurt with certain movements. I'll have to put off walking until my pain is gone! Thanks again for your responses and good luck to both of you!!! jqpublic, good luck on your surgery. Keep up the good work!!! You've had such an amazing weight loss. Good for you and congratulations!

    Is there something wrong with my band

    Thanks everuone.i saw my primary he's new so iv never delt with him before . Told me I'm eating to fast yadayada n I said how am I eating to fast with my first bite lol.. whatever he told me liquids for 2 days n it would fix the issue no more throwing up.. iv been down this road 100 times but doctors orders so I did.. he said " no throwing up with the liquid right?" N I said well no its liquid it doesn't get stuck for me to thro it up. Always so first day back on solids stuck. Even my husband doesn't understand how a bite the size of my thumb tha. I puree in my mouth gets stuck. I'm not saying it's every meal but 1-2 times a day I wake up dreading when I get hungry cause food is such a battle.. maybe it's just me but this is noway to live . Getting stuck fearful of what may or may not make u sick. Or having to have a liquid diet .. that's not good at all.. so for my rants I'm just annoyed.. iv had the band for 4 years n this past year has been horrable. My doc said he's gonna do a barium swallow to see if there's any issues than he will give me the referral to a bariatric doctor
  25. it's been so hard for me I was almost in tears we've had so many events within this 12 days lol. I couldn't help but be sad. It was to hard my husband felt so bad but he pep talked me (buyers remorse set in) no regrets, he said sternly ..Lachellove You got this. We are all going through this adventure together. Think back to why you did this. I gained .2lbs this morning. Been going through that in and off. My body is hanging on and all I want to do is naturally sleep and wait for sunny days. Dragged my butt to work today and it was hard. Smelling all the street vendors and people's lunches in the office. Wanting to take down anyone with coffee and something sweet. Hoping once soft foods start Friday, that I will have more energy. Aside from my family and fitting clothes again, here's my motivation: running a 5k in November. My first. What do you guys want to do? You are absolutely right. Yay a 5k great goal you will have to keep us posted . My goal is to be more active with my children we live around 2 parks and I usually get tired to fast to take them and am ready to take them home in the first 5 mins .. And be able to walk around without getting sweaty and tired.
