    He's Here!

Hi ladies! Wow, I leave for a month and this whole website changes LOL. Hope you're all doing well! My little guy was born on October 21st. 9lbs 2oz 21 inches long! We had a few complications after delivery but we're both doing well now. He's 10lbs and 23 inches as of today. I'm exclusively breastfeeding and we're both doing well with it! I've lost all but 4lbs of my pregnancy weight and then I hope to really gear up and get those last 20lbs off I've been dragging around! Happy Thanksgiving ladies!!
  2. Please don't take this the wrong way, but if there's one thing you'll here on this site perhaps more than any other it's this: don't compare yourself to others. There's nothing good that can come of it. Even if you found someone that was your exact same starting weight, height, and even had surgery the same day, there are still way too many other variables that could impact your progression. Just some examples: age, physical fitness, %body fat, basal metabolism, diet, bougie size, surgical complications, etc. Honestly, it sounds like you're doing fine. If you're not happy with your loss so far, talk with your bariatric team. They may have suggestions for you such as increasing the amount and type of exercise and/or changes to your diet. Best of luck!
  3. For me, it began with a trip to my general doctor. We had a long talk and he referred me to a bariatric surgeon in our area that took my insurance (make sure you check with your insurance that they cover it...every insurance is different with what they look for in order to be approved). The journey is long. Once you have that initial consult with the bariatric surgeon, you then have to decide what surgery you want to have, and then you have to meet with a nutritionist. The nutritionist will go over your pre-op diet plan (most people have to do this to a.) meet insurance requirements and b.) test your discipline to make sure you can follow a diet). Depending on your insurance requirements, you might also have to attend required WLS support group meetings (though I'm sure that's changed since the pandemic) and attend sessions with a counselor. Mine required me to see a counselor, attend support group meetings, and undergo a bunch of medical tests and blood work to make sure it was safe enough for me to get it done. All of this usually spans out through a six-month period. In addition to seeing a nutritionist, I also had to attend nutrition classes. My insurance required a lot from me in order to have it approved. Like I said, everyone's insurance is different. And every surgeon is different. I wish you the very best of luck. Please keep in mind, this journey isn't for everyone. It requires A LOT of discipline and lifestyle changes. You also have to understand there could be complications. I had complications, and it was scary. But, I'm still blessed that I was able to get it done. If you do everything right, it will work out.
  4. Nope i dont because the thought of sweet stuff makes me want to barf. I assume id barf lol try asking your surgeon. If someones had a complication from a piece of chocolate he would be the one to know
  5. If you are willing to travel to California, check out Dr. Oliak for VSG. Zero post op complications, one all inclusive fee. Follows up with his results, his weight Loss results are about 80% of your excess weight. Outstanding.

    What Damage Have I Done?

Had surgery on the 19th, came home 3 days later( Thurs). I was hospitalized on Monday for complications( Fluid on lungs). I went to my local hospital, not the hospital where I had the surgery. They had no Protein shakes, other than ensure( 9g of protein). I didn't want to waste calories getting so little Protein. They knew I was on a full liquid diet and would bring me oatmeal or cream of wheat in the morning. To me, it was better than nothing. It actually made me feel better to have a bit of carbs. No biggie, its not like she sat down to a full turkey dinner.

  8. Miss Pearlie is a hot mess I tell you. My personal goal was 150, but nooooooo that wasn't HER goal and as we all know, what Miss Pearlie wants, Miss Pearlie gets. So I've quit freaking out about it and I'm just letting her do her. I'm eating just fine, drinking just fine and maintaining my normal activity level and the weight keeps coming off. Fortunately enough, it has slowed to about a pound a week which is allowing my skin to catch up with it a bit more quickly. My mother and some of my friends were freaking out because after a substantial loss, my skin sags, I look tired and aged. That has tapered off and I am now looking younger than I did before the band...which was already really remarkable. There was a time that I wanted to get a slight unfill to bring the loss to a complete stop, but after getting advice from experienced bandsters that I trust I just allowed my body to do what it would, trusting that it would stop losing when it wanted to. I am a lot less stressed out as a result and accepting each day and each new surprise as it comes. It is so weird to look at a pair of pants and say "there is no way I'm getting in those"... hold them up to me and still say "nuh, un...not gonna work", then try them on and they are a perfect fit. I have to just sit back and say "no way, I'm really THAT small?" It is shocking and I thought I was over the body dysmorphia, but I'm not quite there yet. I still see myself as chunky...everyone else sees me as skinny. At 138, I'm still way more solid than my body appears and most people think I'm around 120 / 125 at the most. I love being "little". I don't realize how little I am until someone who I thought was an average weight hugs me and they are wrapped around me. Woooooow! Anyway, I'm thrilled that this first year has been so good for me and Miss Pearlie, I'm glad I chose to get the band rather than the sleeve. It turns out it was the right procedure for me and it hasn't given me any complications, even through a horrible stomach virus which caused me to vomit from below the band several times...she's still sitting pretty and perfect. I thank God for my surgeon, I know a lot of my success can be attributed to his level of skill, expertise and his genuine care for his patients. I wish everyone had him, I honestly don't think you would see any complaints about this surgery if they were all like him.

    Birth control= weight gain?

The IUD is amazing, and yeah there are people that have had complications from it. But you will be having a lot more complications if you get pregnant within a year of having the sleeve. Birth control pills cause weight gain and after surgery pills are the easiest to get down. I would suggest the IUD, the procedure takes like 15 min and you just need to rest the rest of the day after getting it placed. If you decided you want kids all you do is get it taken out and bam! You can start baby making. Lol Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App
  10. Hello Everyone, So, I'm halfway through my third week of the preop diet (I was only supposed to do 2 weeks, but insurance is dragging their feet on my authorization, so my surgeon wants me to stay on it), and so far I've lost 13 pounds. Pretty good, huh? But now some strange thoughts are running through my mind. Because I'm doing so well on the preop diet, I've been fooling myself into thinking that if I just continue with what I've been doing, I won't need to have the surgery in the first place. Never mind that I lost 60 pounds with HCG last year and have gained it all back. Never mind that I have ALWAYS gained my weight back (plus more) whenever I've been on a diet. Never mind that I'm a hardcore compulsive overeater that can eat enough for 3 people. Never mind that I can't live on Protein shakes, green veggies, and egg whites forever. I'm still trying to kid myself into thinking that I can "do it on my own." My insurance has paid for all of the preop tests, so besides a few copays, I wouldn't even be losing any money by not having the surgery. I KNOW this makes no sense and I'm being completely unrealistic. I KNOW that I am setting myself up for failure as proven by my past "success" with dieting. I KNOW that the sleeve will have numerous benefits for me, both emotionally and physically. But there's still a little voice in the back of my head saying, "What if?" It's not about being "ready" to have the surgery. I have a great surgeon, have educated myself thoroughly on the procedure, and am comfortable with any risks or complications that I may or may not have. I just hate feeling this way when I know it's just an exercise in futility.
  11. I'm two and a half weeks away from surgery, and it still doesn't feel real! I started this journey over four years ago, researching my options and trying to get funding. The sleeve wasn't available to me then, so I was going to do RNY because that's what my aunt and a friend had. But, my aunt had some complications and she just looked sick, and it worried me. Plus, I'm in Southern Illinois and I would have had to drive to Chicago (five hours away) for the surgery and that also put me off. So, fast forward to 2009. I attended an info session at the new bariatric center in a town close by. I decided to go for the RNY. I was told I had to do a six month diet, so I started that and in the meantime, the surgeon was let go. So, this summer, I found out there was a new surgeon and had heard good things about him. So, I attended yet another info session and learned about the sleeve. I was convinced right way. I made my consultation and saw him for the first time on October 29th. I've gone through all the tests, got clearance from everything and I'm now scheduled for surgery on January 17th! I'm having a hard time this is actually going to happen, though. When I went for my consultation, I was put on the Fast Track (six weeks til surgery.) that was in October. But, I couldn't get my psych consult until the end of December, so they scheduled my surgery for January 10th. I went on 12/28 for psych and they didn't have me on the schedule! But, they got me in for the following and I got cleared by psych yesterday. In the meantime, my surgery was rescheduled for January 17th because my surgeon will be out of town. Then, I started freaking out because I'm in college and my classes (and my husband's classes) start January 18th. So I have to juggle classes starting and trying to get my kids to school while I'm in the hospital. It seems like Murphy's law is in effect, and I'm encountering all sorts of obstacles. So, again, I keep feeling like this is too good to be true! Am I really going to get my sleeve? I don't think I'll believe it until I wake up from surgery with my sleeve!

    2 1/2 Weeks Away

I completely understand how you're feeling right now, just a few weeks away from your surgery. It's been a long journey for you, with research, funding, and changing options along the way. It's natural to have doubts and worries when you see others experiencing complications or when logistical challenges arise. But it's wonderful that you found a new surgeon and that you're now scheduled for surgery. Even though there have been reschedules and unexpected hurdles, it's important to stay positive and focus on the fact that you're making progress towards your goal. I can imagine the mix of excitement and disbelief you're experiencing. It can be hard to fully believe that this life-changing surgery is about to happen. However, you've gone through all the necessary steps, received clearance from different tests, and had your psych consultation. These are all significant milestones that bring you closer to your surgery date. As you navigate the challenges of balancing college classes and family responsibilities, remember that you're stronger than you think. It's not uncommon for life to throw us curveballs, but you have the determination and resilience to overcome them. Try to embrace a positive mindset and visualize waking up from surgery with your sleeve. Visualizing your desired outcome can help you feel more confident and prepared for the journey ahead. Remember, you've come a long way, and this surgery is the next step towards a healthier and happier future. Stay focused on your goals, trust in your medical team, and believe in yourself. Soon enough, you'll wake up from surgery with your sleeve, ready to embark on a new chapter in your life.

Band To Sleeve In Single Surgery?

I just posted my story under the Revisions forum. It is not the happy, hopeful story I know you would like to hear. Please read it so that can understand that there can be serious complications. Best wishes to you!
  14. I'm glad I found this board, it has been so helpful already as I just joined today. I'm having complications from my surgery and am so depressed and wishing I could take it back. Here is my story, if anyone else has experienced anything like this, please respond. Here's my story : Went on on 12/31/15 for gastric sleeve, was told surgery went great. At 9pm that same night I went in stage 3 shock and was transfered to the ICU They found that I had lost over 6 pints blood. They did 5 transfusions but the bleeding wouldn't stop so Sunday Jan 3rs, they did surgery again to see what was causing bleeding and repaired it. I had 24 ounces of blood clots removed. Although in a lot of pain from two abdominal surgeries, my numbers were rising. I went home on January 5th. I was in a lot of pain and short of breath at home. Thursday, Jan 7th I had blood work that showed my white count as high and my hemoglobin was back down. I had a fever Jan 8th of 102. They did a CT Scan and found fluid around my lungs and belly. I take it this is not something that normally happens. I'm just so worried that I'm not going to recover. Thanks for the help!

    Upset at my own weakness...

After months of complications (leaking port and then a flipped port) I finally had restriction. I was losing weight, eating well and enjoying my band. After 2 months I decided I needed a fill and scheduled an appointment with my doctor since I was eating more than I should. My doctor gave me a small fill (.2) and it felt like he actually removed Fluid. I have been eating like crazy (I am an admitted stress eater and I am traveling to Chicago every other week (sometimes weekly) to train someone else to take my job due to the company deciding to relocate our office and will be out of a job in November). I have GAINED 10 pounds in 1 week! I have been making bad choices and eating way more than I should (not forcing food down). I have called my doctors office for help. I totally understand that I will get some bashing responses but some encouragement would be nice.
  16. I posted this under "My story" but maybe this will save someone searching for a surgeon some misery if they read this here first. Unfortunately, I have Dr Milton Owens as my Dr at Chapman Medical Center in Orange, CA. He NEVER remembers who I am OR my history, he is rude and downright mean. I also think he is a sadist who wants to make me suffer for asking legitimate questions about my healthcare. He is dismissive, arrogant etc. Some examples of screwed up things he has said/done: ~Once I cheated (post op) and ate doritos and I was very afraid that I would tear something or who knows what. I called to ask for advice (i.e. to throw up, slam Water...whatever) He said "If you are going to eat doritos why did you bother having the surgery?" ~I asked for a SECOND fill because I was having ZERO restriction, was always hungry and had waited 2 weeks already. He said, "Whats wrong with being hungry? You are not starving. The average person could survive on their fat stores for about a month, for you it would be even longer." ~I got an OVERFILL from him once and was in so much misery I called within 24 hours to get an unfill. As a cash patient, I was really hoping to take advantage of his alleged "24 hour FREE return visit for complications" but he said since it was a Saturday I still had to pay $200. He also said "If I called a plumber after hours it would cost $200 n hour, if I called an attorney it would be $350 an hour. I thought I was doing you a FAVOR." ~When I make appointments with him he refuses to see me 2 doors over in his practices office for $200, but forces me to make my appointments in the office that he shares with the hospital for an additional $126 a visit. Lastly, on one occasion when I asked him if he thought I should have more of a fill due to non restriction, he unfilled me then refilled me to almost maximum capacity. I was sweating and bubbling and gagging and he kept making me drink water to show me what "too much fill" was. I hate this man but so far have not been able to find anyone else who will take a cash patient for just fills. (I got divorced and lost my health insurance) but PLEASE do not subject yourself to this horrible, maybe evil ass of a human being. My whole lapband experience has been hell, and Im trapped. Don't be like me!!!

1 month out! I did it!

Thanks everyone for the welcome & support! @Geno- my recovery was very fast but I hadn't any complications. I did good on drinking & pureed foods. I had taken two weeks off, but I could have gone back after a week. When I was in the hospital for that day, all I did was walk. I walked almost the whole night, the nurses joked that I was wearing holes in their floors. But I think that's what helped so much too. On the second day after surgery I became very nauseous & dizzy. But the next day (day 3) I could start the food. Once I did, and drank more, I was gold. I have to say though that the smell & taste of protein shakes made me sick to my stomach after surgery so Isopure drinks saVed me. I try to keep a positive attitude, keep it in my head that I will have to roll with whatever comes because in the end, this is better for me than the quality of life I was living. Unhealthy & unhappy.
  18. I'm also going with Dr. Lopez (4/26). I've second guessed myself so many times on which Dr and probably will again during the next 3 weeks. But currently I am confident in choosing Dr. Lopez. I chose him specifically because of specializing in high BMI patients. He has had no deaths and very few complications. Plus you get Dr. Lopez and Dr. Ortiz both bariatric surgeons and the anesthesiologist is also a trained surgeon as well. So 3 dr's in the OR. Dr. Garcia is not with A Lighter Me. Ready 4 a Change is who you would contact for him. =)

    2 weeks out

I too had a heart attack at a young age due to a freak thing with my artery, and since I've had no complications since the stenting they did, I am like you...just barely at a higher risk. I will probably do one, though.
  20. Spoken like a true man.... :biggrin5: My doc told me when I was comfortable....It was about 3 weeks out for us, but I did have some complications at surgery.
  21. Greetings All: Do you know of a lady who has a screen name of Katydid? Her real name is Helene. She lives in Western Australia and has had some horrible complications with her band. I think she said her new surgeon is Dr. Padovan or something like that. His office is in Waikiki. Katy visits a board on here very frequently that is a 50's board. She had surgery on Monday morning and we are all on pins and needles wanting to know if she is ok and how the surgery went. If anyone can help me find the Dr. or the hospital she might be in I'd like to contact the hospital to see if she is ok. Thank you from all her friends, Susan Powell, Baltimore, MD USA

    Gastritis????

Diagnosed with gastritis today... Anyone else had this complication? My stomach is so sore. Interested in hearing from others
  23. I am very curious if my health insurance would cover any complications as a result of having VSG and being self pay. Has anyone had any issues with this? I know I should call my insurance company, however, a part of me doesn't want to create a red flag either.
  24. Let us know, I am curious as well. I have a VSG practice near me that will do follow up exams and address complications from another MD (even another country), but they do not take insurance.
