  1. When I STARTED the process for WLS I was 389 pounds (in 2019). My highest recorded weight ever was 392 pounds (in 2017). My weight on the day of surgery was 321 pounds. At 6 months post-op I was 237 pounds. I reached my goal weight at 18 months 1 day post op and I'm down an extra two pounds passed that so far. I started having stalls 3 months post op and have had them every single month since. I'm currently in one right now, as a matter of fact lol (17 day stall so far).

    Pre-Op Diet and Constipation

I had to do a 10 day pre-op diet, and my surgeon had me start miralax once a morning on the first day all the way up to my surgery date.
  3. I understand what you are saying. I always called my VSG my sleeve or stomach, not pouch. I can kind of understand the pouch idea with the gastric bypass because things get stuck in our "pouch", which is the size of an egg, and not our stomach. Thank you for your response. I only threw up once with my VSG in many years. Then again, I had a very conservative surgeon who made it 10 ounces instead of the 3 - 5 ounces. I wish I could say the same thing that I never foamed or threw up about my revision to RNY. 😆

    newbie

I'm new, too! 2 classes out of the required 10 down, and meeting with the surgeon in October. I'm so certain this is what I want to do, but I'm afraid something will pop up to derail my plans. I'm thankful to have found this community that I can learn and gain support from. There's only so much the classes can prepare me for.

    Pre surgery requirements.

I didn't have that requirement either. I have documented my weight at least once a week for the last 10 years or so, but I didn't go to the doctor last year due to COVID either. I would ask the surgery center what you can do for that. Did you maybe got to weight watchers or anything?
  6. You will hear all sorts of stories because none of us is exactly the same…. My daughter had her bypass 10 years ago and she can throw up - she also gets things lodged. It’s common to ‘foam’ first before retching. I had my bypass 8 years ago and I don’t get things lodged; I also couldn’t actually throw up for nearly 8 years, but would foam (that would be the first indication something hadn’t agreed with me) and then retch, but not bring anything up. After my first radiotherapy session for cancer (they blasted my whole abdomen) I came home and tried to eat something and threw up and retched for 3 hours until my family got hold of a nurse on the phone and she recommended flat Pepsi or coke…. Must be flat. It worked. It’s been my go-to drink ever since (Pepsi Max Cherry, completely flattened, with ice 😆). Since then I threw up medication also with the treatment, but not since. The important thing is to know yourself. As I understand it the stomach, when it’s very small, is often not muscular enough to actually throw up, but now I know it can be done! 🙄 - not that I wish cancer treatment on anyone… I’m sure you’re connected alright - you also know now that you can get clogged and chewing things properly is really important. I used to foam at the mouth and feel I was going to throw up every time I tried peas in the first year - I think because I didn’t chew them properly and they were rattling round like little bullets… 😜 x

I had my sleeve on the 20th august. Its a very tough week. It took me hours per protein shake which took up the whole day. 8. It seems extremely expensive for what you get—my meal prep service just started doing what could be considered bariatric portions, but it's 10 meals for $55, delivered, which is about half the price of the Bari Box. https://www.valleymealprep.com/shop/10for55/
  9. Size 2 & 4? I was hoping for 10 & 12! Damn! I really don't know what size I am now. Congrats!

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Day 6 - feeling no pain at all and getting 70 grams of protein mainly through shakes and plain greek yogurt. Puree & Filtered soups have helped mix it up but my energy level is very low.....tire easily after walking for 10 min. Going full pureed foods this Friday so maybe that will help.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I also drank soups during my liquid phase but instead of using water, I used bone broth or veggie protein broth. That adds about 10 grams of protein. I found it at WalMart with the canned soups but it is in a box. I had a much easier time drinking soup in order to get my protein rather than a protein shake.

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

I haven’t been keeping up on this thread last day or two. Surgery on 8/23. So I lost about 10 pounds I think some had lost more and some have lost less, but I know it’s very individual. I’m really happy with that amount. I’m still having pain on the bottom right of my stomach. Doctor said it was normal. He was concerned about not going to the bathroom so had to step up measure there unfortunately. I haven’t had any issues with 4oz an hour of liquids and proteins. I am thinking of moving up to soft foods since I am doing okay and it’s on the two week schedule. I haven’t started vitamins yet, might try a gummy one this week. I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube videos from 2 doctors and or patient l. I’ll follow up later with the names. They’ve been helping me less stressed. Although my best advantage is having an awesome wife who has been super on top of foods and meds for me. She has really been amazing. Hope everyone is doing well with their recovery. I’m glad we are in this together.
  15. Hi - long story short, I had a lapband put in by CIBO in Toronto over 10 years ago. We all know they went bankrupt, and I probably haven't had any fills/ unfill / care in over 7 years. Recently I'm finding the band too tight and throw up several times a week and most of the weight I lost has been gained back as I can't eat the good foods as I can't digest them. I've asked my family doc to refer me to the original surgeon Dr. Hong who I recall doing my surgery as I think I'd like to get it out. Its been over a month and I'm still waiting to hear from his office. In the meantime I'd really like to get a defill just to help me get in a better place to get better food in me and stop the throwing up when I get stuck. I can't even think about eating out in a restaurant or with friends now as I fear I'll have to run to bathroom and get unstuck! So I'm looking for someone in central Toronto area that would be willing to do a defill for me. After CIBO went under I was getting some adjustments with a nurse that was helping out but I've lost touch with her. Any advice on where to go or who to contact?? Thanks

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

3 days away from 4-weeks post-op and I feel like I'm doing pretty good. Did anyone else gain like 10 pounds the 1st/2nd day after surgery? My dad thought it was probably the gas they fill your insides with for laparoscopy, plus the swelling, but I thought that was just nuts! It went away after about 4-5 days and I was back down to surgery day weight but I was like, "Oh, come on, really!?!" Right now I'm on soft/blended foods like scrambled eggs, and well, a lot of scrambled eggs. The last 3 weeks I haven't really had an appetite, and that excited me. Sweet things like protein shakes were too sweet, and that excited me, b/c without a taste for them, it makes it even easier to see a future where I don't eat things that aren't healthy for me. Over the weekend, however, I found that I started to enjoy the tastes of the overly sweet tasting protein shakes again, and even have started to have some "cravings" for food that I kind of thought I wouldn't have for awhile more (cheese is a big one as I'm able to have those Laughing Cow Light wedges.) With my shift to "normal" (as tolerated) coming up this Thursday, I'm wondering to myself if I will continue to feel "cravings" increase. Has this happened to any of you this early after surgery? Having that old hunger come back in what seems like such a short period of time? Also wanted to say congrats to all the other August peeps and anyone else with an upcoming surgery date.

    Food addiction concerns

No. Before I even met with the bariatric clinic to inquire about revision I did a two-week liquid diet just to see if I could do it. (It turns out that my clinic doesn't use that technique for liver reduction.) Liquid protein shakes and powders are very filling. They are not like the old "Slender" shakes in a can. I would drink them and ask "Where is the rest ov my lunch?" No, I'm quite satisfied drinking protein shakes, supplemented with broth, sugar-free Jello and sugar-free Popsicles. I won't say it was totally easy, but it was not as hard as I expected and I lost over 10 pounds during those two weeks. Do a practice run. Try it now for about four days just to see how it goes for you.

    Hurtful comments

My brother (and sister) hates fat people and told me he hates that I took the easy way out with having surgery instead of "putting the work into it and just stop eating so much". Mind you, this is coming from a controlling a-hole who has a huge stomach as well AND wants to me talk to his own daughter and 10 year old granddaughter about them gaining too much weight. Like they don't know! Like they should do it because of the way he feels! His own granddaughter is afraid to eat in front of him! He makes comments to her. How can you do that to a young child you're supposed to care about? He cuts his own wife down as well. But doesn't look in his own mirror!! There's been a lot more and I've since disowned him. Sometimes you have to stay away from negative people for your own mental health. But you do you. Not telling you what you do, just saying I understand. Best of luck. Stay positive. 19. I had my VSG the last week of June so I’m almost 10 weeks post op. I normally have really thick, long hair but the last few weeks I’ve lost so much hair that it’s about 50% gone. Most people I’ve read on here didn’t experience hair loss until later so I’m scared I might lose even more. How long until it stops and should I be worried about bald spots?

    Food addiction concerns

I am a sugar addict. I had the same concern as you do, and I told my doctor I would prefer the gastric bypass because I would have dumping syndrome keeping me accountable. He said he thought that the hormonal changes that occur with the sleeve would be enough for me, and I decided to trust him. I am only 7 weeks out but so far I don't have those same sort of cravings for sweets like I did before. They still sound good but I don't have this obsessive drive to go out at 10:00 at night while my children are sleeping to buy a candy bar (I never did it but I was tempted to). I think if bypass is available, you may want to do that as it will give you an extra level of protection against the sugar cravings, but I can say that the sleeve definitely helps.
  21. Good Morning, Day 5 post RYN surgery here in Toronto. Pain has gone and wounds are healing nicely. I have lost 25 lbs. in total with 17 lbs. since 8/10 pre-surgery SlimTime and now 8 lbs. since surgery. I was able to get 60 grams of protein in me for the 1st time since surgery but still feeling very sluggish and tire very quickly. I try to walk for 5 minutes every hour but need to sit and rest. I also have a very raspy voice oddly enough that makes me sounds weak. Anybody who can let me know their experience and when I might turn a corner on energy would be great. I like being active and don't want to push myself too hard too soon.

I need a pep talk (rant to follow)

the difference this time is that it will actually "work" as long as you put in the effort. On previous diets, I'd lose 50 lbs (that is, on my more successful tries), hit a brick wall, and then the weight would eventually come back. You are constantly fighting biology. This time, you won't be fighting biology. That has all been reset. a 10-20 lb regain, usually in year 2 or 3 (after you hit your lowest weight), is very common - I knew that going into it and purposely lost a little more than I wanted to, knowing it was quite likely I'd end up where I wanted to be in the first place. But gains beyond that are due to bad habits creeping back in. You do have to be diligent. I still closely monitor myself, and I'm over six years out.
  23. Some sleevers need vitamins long-term and some don't. I'm one of those that do, in fact I had a B12 scare recently. Somehow my B12 got low and I got the whole list of nasty symptoms (minus pale skin, for obvious reasons, LOL): Weakness, tiredness, or lightheadedness Heart palpitations and shortness of breath Pale skin A smooth, sore tongue Constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or gas Nerve problems like numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, and problems walking Vision loss Mental problems like depression, memory loss, or behavioral changes What caused me to know something was seriously wrong was the "problems walking" part. I fell three times in 10 days and it hit me that's not normal. I had to increase the dose of B12 I am taking and I'm still not free from all the symptoms, although I'm better. So it's a roll of the dice - you could be off supplemental vitamins relatively early or you could need them longer.
  24. So I was telling my brother about how I’m doing well on the pre-op liquid diet (down 14 lbs in 10 days!) and he says “Just think, if you’d just do that regularly you wouldn’t have to go through surgery.” I know its just ignorance and he doesn’t get it, but it still hurts. Feeling down on myself right now.

    Devastating.

a 10-20 lb regain during year 2 or 3 is pretty common. If you want to lose more weight, you'll have to create a calorie deficit - by either eating less or exercising more - or both. Some people just go back to the rules we got from our programs - not necessarily all the way back to purees and protein shakes, but the whole protein first, then veggies, tnen - if you have room and are still hungry, a small serving of fruit or whole-grain carb. Others have had success with Weight Watchers or Intermittent Fasting. it can be challenging to lose weight after those first magical months, but, it can be done...
