MGB 4 months post op. I’ve lost more than just weight…
SuperGuuurl posted a topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
Hi everyone I’m back again for moral support. Got my MGB back in February. After a couple of extremely hard weeks, 5 weeks to be precise, i finally thought that my ordeal was over. I had spent all this time finding it really hard to drink water and reach my protein goals until then. Suddenly, starting the 6th week post op, i saw some light at the end of the tunnel and managed to expand my food a little bit. I avoided everything I was told to avoid until then, oil, sugar, pasta, rice, raw veggies, you name it! one day I was invited to a barbecue and ate what I was given, namely a bit of salad and some marinated chicken. Everything was fine for the days that followed and I was ecstatic! I started to experiment with food more and more and I realised that the food I tolerated the most was still just plain potatoes and carrots with some minced meat of chicken. However, as weeks went by, my sensitivities seemed to increase by the day. I’d try watermelon and suffer excruciating cramps the next day, so I stopped. Then I’d try beans, and I’d be fine the next day but suffer more cramps the day after, long story short, it seemed like every single new food I’d try was not tolerated by my stomach. The pain and cramps would be instant, and the explosive diarrhoea would follow the next morning like clockwork. I remember at some point, i barely ate for 2 days and what followed were the most painful cramps and hunger pangs I’ve ever ever experienced in my life! Looking at a plate of food triggers me now. I am absolutely scared of putting anything in my mouth. Even my trusted potatoes and carrots have forsaken me. That means I have not a single food that I seem to tolerate and I have absolutely no idea how this happened! Today, i tried boiled potato with some rotisserie chicken, and ended up vomiting 3 times. And when I say vomit, i mean, gag as if I would vomit, but only saliva comes out. i feel weak and desperate. I have lost 32kg in almost 4 months, that about 70 pounds. That is way too much weight. Let’s not start about my hair loss… it’s ridiculous. I plan to shave my head… i never in a million years thought this would be my life after the surgery. I have a doc appointment this week but only will see my surgeon in July… does this story sound familiar to any of you guys? Did I do something wrong? What did I miss?! I’ve been on the verge of going to the ER multiple times…- 14 replies

Allison I totally understand!! I haven’t tried pudding as the unsweetened applesauce is more than sweet enough. Finally had a real BM today. Not a green Brussels sprout. I feel so much better!! I am back on miralax as I don’t want to go through that again. The reason I shared the egg custard is it’s loaded with protein not icky sweet and same consistency as pudding

whey protein instantly cooks when you mix it with something hot. You have to wait until it cools down a bit to mix it in. You can try mixing before you cook and stir as you cook it.

I've considered the Syntrax Nectar, but they never have the single pack assortments in stock and the shipping for a single pack of a flavor I'm interest in that they DO HAVE is too much. I don't want to order a big cannister of it if I haven't tasted it. They advertise it as tasteless and instant mixing. The Inspire brand isn't bad. It's available at BariatricEating.com. They have a lot of flavors plus unflavored. I like them because I need a low calcium option to drink with my BariatricPal Chewable w/iron multi-vitamin that makes me sick unless I drink a little milk with it. Most have between 143-357mg Calcium. Whey protein cooks if you mix it with something hot or microwave it, so I add it after it's cooled a little and I use a milk frother to mix it good with cold liquid. They are not chalky, but taste better with milk than water. You need to stay under 200mg of calcium when taking your iron supplement. (1/2c skim milk 150mg Calcium, 1/2 sc Unflavored has 10.5mg, 1/2 sc Mexican Chocolate has 12.5mg, 1/2 sc Dutch Chocolate 50mg, 1/2 sc Strawberry White Chocolate has 55mg). I didn't like the Mexican Chocolate because it's gritty and the cinnamon taste. I use 3oz skim milk + 1oz water with 1/2 scoop Strawberry White Chocolate for a total of 167.5 mg calcium. They also have a few calcium fortified flavors that have 1150mg calcium per scoop. I've been drinking 4oz milk with 1/2 scoop twice a day (725mg per 1/2 cup/sc) in lieu of a calcium supplement. The flavors are Tropical Coconut and Chai Tea. Other options better with water are Melon Cooler, and Pomegranate Razz Punch.

Food Before and After Photos

A low fat mayo that you can tolerate. It may take trying a few before you find what you like. Another option is to use yogurt to replace all or some of the mayo. Good luck on your recovery. -
How to get Isopure Protein powder to mix? I tried adding some non flavored Isopure to Campbells Cream of Chicken and it clumps. I used a milk frother to mix it and it just wouldn’t all dissolve. The soup was hot, I thought that would help. Did NOT help. Was really looking forward to being able to add protein to normal food. Eating from Bariatric food all the time gets expensive.

Guys I am having it bad right now. Under the regiment that my doctor has me on I can not have purées until week 4 which is still8 days away. I also have some texture problems when it comes to oatmeal or pudding. On week two I was allowed to start sugar free pudding and applesauce. The applesauce is way to sweet for me right now and it the no sugar added. Hasn’t made me dump but sure has made me nauseous. Tomorrow I can start oatmeal!! Yay for others not so much for me! I just want to taste something other than protein drinks. I have been doing my water and protein goal just fine it’s just getting hard to make myself drink it. It’s one more week and i know I can do it but it’s really still just another week of protein drinks and water. Also starting to get to my first stall which is kinda annoying but I know I just need to keep walking and drinking. I know it happens and understand why just one of those things you have to get pass. I have told my husband to take the scale away and I’ll measure myself on Wednesday and Sunday instead of everyday. Sorry for long rant just need to say it to other that understand. -

I had gastric bypass Roux N Y on May 3rd. First two weeks were pretty good, no pain or nausea at all really. Now, for the past week I seem to have nausea all the time. Everything I try to eat tastes disgusting to me and makes me want to gag. I'm barely eating anything at all. I feel like I wake up nauseated and stay that way all day. I am able to get water down, but food is almost a no go at this point. I absolutely hate the protein drinks. Just the thought of them makes me want to puke. I've tried several different ones and unflavored powders, as well as a protein "lemonade" mix, and protein water and I just can't. I'm so over this at this point. Hoping it gets better soon. It's not even the taste of food that I miss, it's the being able to eat without wanting to vomit just thinking about it.

The liquid stage is hard, but it will pass. For now, here's a laugh... just don't forget your scoop of protein powder, lol

Am I The Only One Percent?
summerseeker replied to ChreeMiriah's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I wish I could hug you, You are having it hard. If you are in the top 1% then maybe I make the 10% club. I had nausea quite bad for the first 8 months. I felt the same as when I was pregnant. I don't think it is / was as bad as you are suffering. I could eat tiny slivers of cheese. I could eat deli meat in tiny bits and jerky. I could eat Melba toast with soft cream cheese on it. I could also manage milk and peanut butter. So this is what I lived on. I never made my protein or even the liquid requirement. I never was able to take my calcium tablet. I survived but I was so lacking energy. My family were worried about me. There are still foods that revolt me like eggs, hummus and fish. I still eat a lot of dairy. I have no room for carbs. Slowly I began to eat a little more and then the nausea became less and less. I have a huge restriction, I can only eat 50 grams of meat. I eat 4 small meals a day, down from 5. I can not eat late at night because of severe GERD, waking with acid in your lungs is nasty. I can drink big gulps now which is a blessing. Just continue to eat what you can, when you can. Forget low calorie, try a big variety, some of it you might be able to keep down. Don't give up -

Thank you everyone who responded, I needed that logical thinking and reassurance. @Fred in Pa i really appreciate the recommendations around exercise before and after. I’m going to try that. Also thanks for sharing your pizza moment. It makes me feel less the villain of myself and more human. @summerseeker I’ve been following along with your posts since I came here back in February and am always given a level head after reading your responses. You’re right that I shouldn’t make food the enemy; I just want to eat less overall while taking in good stuff. @summerset my team has me on 90 protein, 40 carbs and around 25-35 fat per day. I have been given the goal of keeping all of that within 800 calories until my fifth month I believe. I’m not perfect, I often go slightly over or under the 800. When I started adding exercise, my routine blew up because of the hunger Fred mentioned. I’ve been struggling to modify my intake to support exercise without exceeding the limits until I speak with my dietician again next month. I will email her today and ask if I should adjust these limits given my added activity. @learn2cook you’re so right about therapy. I do have a therapist I’ve been seeing for many years. I didn’t realize I had disordered eating until I started this process, but now I realize it has been there since I was a kid…. And she knew it too… I need to journal again. That’s a great idea. It helps calm that voice that torments me in my head, the one that simplifies food to “good” or “bad” and attempts to label me the same way. @catwoman7 great thoughts around starting weight and loss rate. It’s so hard not to compare myself. On the one hand I know losing slower will help with skin elasticity, but I also feel like I’m failing or doing something wrong until a friend like you reminds me of the reality. Thanks for that 🙏 -
Starting on the 29 of May I'm allowed 4 ozs of protein 2 cups of non starchy veggies and 2 protein shakes and all the water I want and second week all liquids, I just started last Monday to get acquainted with it and I'm doing good but this week I gave no choice but to follow it to the T I'm 16 days away from my sleeve

I was put on pureed diet after surgery.....however no fruit or veggie. High protein is my Dr focus & WATERRRR

Thanks. I’m definitely doing everything right. I ended up just having chicken broth with unflavored protein for dinner that night and it helped settle my stomach.

Hi guys - I think unread that some of you are on a liquid following your surgery. I will be on a very soft puréed protein rich diet following surgery (almost watery so it slide through a fork. Im going to spend some of the day making my meals and dividing them up. We also have to include fruit and veg prepared in the same puréed way x

Help I can't eat anything!!
ChreeMiriah replied to str8outtajerzy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m in the same boat and I’m 6 months post op. I eat about three bites of something protein or really anything, veggies too and then I immediately throw up. Doctor has me on multiple medications for this and Valium to relax the muscles in my stomach. I also had to have two emergency surgery’s 2 weeks ago because my sleeve was stuck to my gallbladder with so much scar tissue so they thought that was it, but then a day after that surgery they saw that my gallbladder was bad and they had to remove it immediately. Still no change and I feel so sick all the time because I’m barely getting 300 calories in daily. I loose a pound every other day. I know for 99 percent it’s a miracle and worth it, but I have always been the 1 percent when it comes to my health. I have lost 80 pounds since Dec 19, 2022, but I feel like it wasn’t the right way and I’m worried I’m loosing way to fast. Anyone else suffering like this because my doctor says it’s unusual and I can’t find anything on the internet. Thanks for all the helpful replies in advance. If anyone out there understands my pain feel free to reach out to me through email- marsgirl22@gmail.com -
Struggling… the evil voice is back.
summerseeker replied to mcipanda's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don't know what's wrong with what you ate. I am allowed to eat everything. I just can not eat potato, rice and pasta. I have sugar free sweets on occasion. My hubby is diabetic so we always have them in the house. I drink strawberry milk every week on my dieticians advice, to up my calorie intake and give me a little energy boost. You said you had crust less pizza, so that's ham, pineapple and melted cheese ? I do not see anything wrong with that. I do not have to count carbs so I can not say its good or bad. I choose to count calories and my protein intake. Just to make sure I am honest. I am up to 1200 calories a day and 80 grams of protein Speak to your team, do you need to be so restricted that you feel you are cheating or sabotaging yourself when you are just eating what seams to me to be ok food choices ? As @Fred in Pa says fill up with protein, before and after exercise. My dietician would say eat some nuts. We all need to find our own way eventually. I really don't want to be the old me who thought all foods were bad unless they were an undressed salad. I just want to eat a lot less than I did. -

You are not alone! I had my surgery on March 1, so I’m just a few weeks ahead of you and my appetite has also returned. Please do not be too hard on yourself, because that anxiety is what drains your confidence and willpower. I have found that the exercising is what creates the hunger and deep hunger creates the cravings. So before I exercise, I have a protein portion. A shake or high protein yogurt. I also do the same right after…fill your pouch. Try to keep it full with good food and protein. I have also felt that if I properly hydrate, the cravings are fewer…so make sure you are drinking a lot before, during, and after your exercise. Good luck and hang in there, you are not alone! PS: I, too, had a slice of pizza last week and had the same mental reactions. It wasn’t worth it. -
Whatever your surgeon suggests to you since they know your case the best. Your plan sounds pretty standard. I think my liquid phase was a week, then to puree foods. I was never told calorie goals but in the beginning, he stressed to make sure I try to stay hydrated and get my protein in.

SoCal Kaiser Options Friends!
Petkato replied to Helen of LaCroix's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am with Kaiser Socal too. my surgery is tentatively scheduled for June 19th. I have to meet the surgeon on June06. I have not reached the target weight goal he had asked me to reach. so not sure if my surgery will get postponed. fingers crossed. I loved the Options classes too. I took it last year. Good luck on your journey!. -
Then, would follow what your surgeon said. The normal requirements are liquid for 2 weeks, puree for 2 week, and then soft foods for 2 weeks. High protein, low carb, low-fat, and low sugar. Does that sound about right for you?

Stir fried beef over steamed rice. I first fried it in the air fryer than glazed it in a pan with soy sauce, vinegar, onions and green beans. My dish is layered: rice, onions/green beans and then steak on the top since I started with protein first. The nutritional info is what I ate (not how much I made). -
