    Frustrated in Kansas!

It really depends on the person. If you can stand daily or weekly weighing without freaking out, then go for it. If you can't then stay off the scale and look at other NSV. Taking your measurements (neck, boobs, waist & hips) is a good alternative. I didn't get my first weight check until my 2 week checkup and was pleasantly surprised. However I know from previous weight loss attempts that the scale makes me crazy. Instead of focusing on eating properly and getting exercise I am worried about what the scale says. I therefore limit it to once a month, preferably at the doctor's office.
  2. My surgery was March 31,2015 and to date I am 110 pounds down. I started at 341lbs and today I weigh 229. Now I should be over the moon happy. My weight loss has been awesome, however I realize more now than ever there is so much more to losing weight because I feel more alone today than I ever felt at 341lbs. I'm sharing this to help anyone thinking about bariatric surgery to understands that the reality of not being able to eat through your feelings is hard. Worth it but hard. I just have to sit in the feeling of loneliness or whatever it is until it passes or I can sleep it off, even exercise helps but once the coping mechanism of overeating is gone things get real......fast. I knew this was a component of surgery and I thought I was prepared but I wasn't. Soooo one day at a time. But the struggle is real.

Lol, my hair changes daily..but that is just regular ol' me....= ]

    Just here to gripe

Just stop weighing yourself. At this point healing should be your focus, not losing. I think embrace the stall is a crock, you don't have to embrace it, but you should learn how stalls help you in weight loss long term, it makes life easier.
  5. Hello all! I am going to my first informational meeting for weight loss surgery, and have been doing some early research on my own. I was wondering, what made you all choose the RNY surgery for yourselves, as opposed to the gastric sleeve? I'm just considering the pros and cons of both, so any input you all have regarding your own decisions would be very helpful..... Thanks!

    6 months standstill....

Have you seen a nutritionist? If I were in your shoes, I'd bring your food logs to a good nutritionist and let them help you decided where healthy changes can be made. I also notice you're only 30 pounds from goal. The closer you get to goal the slower the weight loss becomes because your body is trying harder and harder to hang onto that fat. Just to be safe, I'd also see your PCP and get a blood work up, just to be sure there isn't a medical reason at play causing your long plateau. Best wishes and congratulations on your success so far.
  7. IzzyBelle - WOW!! I didn't realize that there were "rules" about how fast someone should lose weight especially on a liquid diet! I probably would have gone a little "crazy" too, and indignant to boot! And then I would have beat myself up for not writing down exactly every kilo-calorie I ever ate and keeping track to the thousandth of a k-cal, etc! And of course that would set me up for complete failure and I'd be right back at the start... You know what? I bet you are doing just fine! I am sure there's an average, you know? From 1% to 30% and right smack in the middle is "10-15%" but just a hair off the middle is 8-9% and that's where you are! I bet it's like little kids' growth charts - being smaller or bigger than "average" doesn't mean diddly squat if the kid is happy and healthy, right? So I bet you're doing great! And you're doing it right, and you're happy and (trying to be) healthy and the weight will follow. Hang in there! *hugs*
  8. Hello JWRN; I have not had my PS as of yet, like you I am searching for that perfect Doc. In my search I have found a Doc in Nashville, I am impressed with his staff and I havent even been to see him yet. He is associated with Vanderbilt. I sent him an email with questions about his experience with weightloss patients and he responded personally very quickly. I am going to him for a estimate in the next few weeks. Here is his response from my email: Laura, Thanks for writing. I do have experience with weight loss patients and would be happy to see you at any time. My consultations are free and it wouldn't hurt to see you early. This would give you an understanding of what to expect and get an appreciation for the timing of procedures. Please feel free to contact any one of my nurses (Sally, Nan, Sandra) at your earliest convenience. Our office phone number is 165-327-7407. I hope this was helpful. We are looking forward to seeing you in the office soon. Sincerely Stephen Davis, MD I don't know if this helps...... good luck.......If you find some other great doc in Nashville, I would love to know. Laura

  10. Hi all, Bandpal PM'd me to make sure I hadn't fallen off the face of the earth, so I figured I should check in. I haven't been posting much because I don't have a lot of weight loss to report. I've been at the same weight for about 7 months. I'm not complaining, because I'm really not even thinking about it and the weight stays off. In times past, if I had lost 50 pounds, it would have started coming back on the minute I dropped my guard. I've had some very trying emotional times lately. My beloved Mom recently got very sick, and she passed away last week. So, it's even more remarkable that I haven't gained weight, because food has always been such a comfort. I am very happy with the band, and hope to lose another 40 pounds this year. After that, I plan to have the deflated spare tire lopped off from around my waist. I had hoped to do that by my 50th b'day, but 51 will do just fine. I hope all of you are doing well. I know from reading the posts that some of you are true band SUPERSTARS. I'm pround of all of us. What a great start to the rest of our lives. Peace and joy to you all. Foofy
  11. I had surgery Nov 20 and as of today I'm down 43 lbs ... I'm happy but that old feeling of the weight loss is going to stop has started to set in .. I'm walking about 2 miles a day and that's making me more hungry ... my hair is falling out like crazy ,but I am so thankful I had this surgery ..
  12. Do people realize how stupid they sound when they say " I'm not going to lose weight because I don't want loose skin" or "I'm afraid to lose weight because of loose skin"? I know, I know, we may have all thought it at some point and time, however, chances are that mindset probably played some type of role in the weight gain and weight loss. But saying you don't want to lose weight because of loose skin is like digging your own grave. Saying your tired of being fat and continuing to make poor meal choices is like digging your own grave. Knowing you have a problem losing weight and not doing anything is like digging your own grave. You can live with loose skin a lot longer than living with all that excess fat, so shut up and do what you need to do to loose the damn weight. Ugh! Wake up people! You should have been thinking about that loose skin all that time you were eating cakes, cookies and pies with a diet coke. You can't deal with loose skin but you can deal with feeling tired all of the time, shortness of breath, low self esteem, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease and all of the other possible health risks associated with being overweight? Really? Yes, I am clearly feeling some type of way about this topic and If you don't like it ....

    How long were your stalls?

I don't know that there is a typical duration. Our bodies are so different and constantly changing through this process that there is no really predictable rate of weight loss. You may notice rapid physical changes when the scale isn't moving. Just follow your plan and stay off the scale if it is driving you crazy. http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall
  14. First thing I would do is call my insurance company or go on line and read the requirements for surgery. Every insurance company has different requirements. I would also research surgeon groups before picking one. And I would recommend looking up the hospital ratings also. Most groups have a weight loss seminar-- you may want to go to 1 or more to see which you think fits you best. At that point you should be ready to make an appointment with a surgeon's group UNLESS your insurance requires a referral. It seems that for most people it's about 3-6 months depending on insurance and physician schedules. Good Luck.

    Use It To Lose It

Hi Sandi, I had been working with a personal trainer for about 2 years before my surgery (I'm 4 years post-op) but we couldn't do much cardio because of so much weight on my knees. Still, I had good muscle tone under all the weight and I think that helped both my surgical recovery as well as my ultimate weight loss. I didn't exercise much -- maybe a couple of walks a week - for the first 100 lbs, which poured off me in about 5 monhts (I'm only 5'1 and my body was dying to shed some weight once I was eating proper quantities with the band). Then I started walking longer lengths (maybe 3 miles) about 4 times a week. When I got to 200 lbs, I started running small spurts within my walks and got really excited about having a tummy tuck (I'd been told I could have one at 180), so I started running more and walking less, probably working out 5 times a week. Once I recovered from my tummy tuck, I trained for the NYC marathon back in 2007, which took me below my goal weight! I've had some health problems unrelated to the band (a miscarriage) this year and have gained about 25 lbs. My band is perfectly adjusted, but now that I'm out of the depression that goes along with that experience (I'm 37 and have no children), I've signed up for the NYC marathon again and I know I'll be back to goal weight in no time. I'm so thankful for my band. Without it, I know I would have gained 100+ lbs while I wasn't "minding the store." I'm so glad I have this adjustable tool and a body that craves exercise and responds to it. Thanks for the question. It feels good to own up to what's going on with me. It's been a while since I've checked in with LBT and it's a valuable support tool. Take care, JulieNYC
  17. I think the skin discoloration is related to PCOS - but don't remember for sure. Hopefully as symptoms of PCOS diminish with weight loss so will the discoloration.

    Lost 37lbs and STUCK!

I'd start tracking all your calories and fat and protein on a site like sparkpeople. You may find that you aren't getting enough protein. Also, click on my ticker and you'll see my weight loss pattern. It's very stairstep-I'll be the same weight for a week or two then drop 4-5 lbs in a couple days!

I know I’ve posted before about hair loss. But do any of you have any recommendations on helping stopping hair loss. I use nioxin right now but idk if it’s from my protein or what. But any recommendations will help!

    Hair loss

I am 58 with fine but relatively thick hair that’s a little below my back bra strap. I am 3 months post op and my hair and nails are growing much faster due to the combo of quality bariatric vitamins (Watch the stinking fillers), collagen (put in your tea or smoothie) which gives you 11 grams of protein with few calories and the extra biotin. Lastly, my scalp and skin have been extraordinarily dry so it’s a struggle to stay hydrated— I gave my scalp an oil treatment and it really did help texture. Hey, if you are gonna do this weight loss journey you must exercise self care — in my opinion this entails changing many habits into best practices so you can be the best version of yourself possible.

    Amerihealth NJ Through Employer

I have ameriheath in Pennsylvania and the requirements for me are bmi of 40 or higher with no health problems or bmi of at least 35 with two health problems. Also for me it was a 6 month program (im on my 4th month), and just like most others its a visit with a dietitian and psych eval. I hope that helped! Also if you go to google and type in your insurance provider and put requirements for bariatric surgery it should bring you a form! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Thank you for the response. When you say a 6 month diet plan is that through the surgeon? I have been on a diet plan through my pcp for months with weight loss medication. I wonder if that would be acceptable. Mine is through the surgeon but im not sure! Maybe as long as you followed the guidelines i dont see why they would say no Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    I need HELP...

Your surgeon should be able to direct you to a nutritionist (if he doesn't have one already that he works with) Barring that, if you want more structure, WW is a good weight loss program (and they offer 2 different diets now, I think)

    Dating awkwardness

It's something I am proud of, so mention it when weight loss or something comes up in the conversation, whether a date or an acquaintance. Proud of the weight loss Proud that I've maintained Proud of the hard work it takes and still takes Proud that I roll out of bed and immediately workout, seven days a week, with few exceptions I don't go into details, unless the person shows interest. Just a simple, "I had a sleeve gastrectomy to lose weight". Or if someone comments on how tiny I am, or maybe they feel bad about their weight, I let them know that I understand as I was almost 300 pounds and leave it there, unless they ask for more. I guess I'm more of love me or leave me type of person. At my age, I don't pussyfoot around the facts, I say things as they are in all respects. This way, I can be FULLY me and that is a VERY liberating feeling! I kind of wish I could have always had the confidence to be ME.
