RNY Revision @ 12 Years Post-op
Laneykins posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi everyone- I'm new to BariatricPal. I had RNY Gastric Bypass in June 2008. Met goal weight of 118 lbs. by August 2009. Had my son in September 2011 so I gained 30 lbs. which I subsequently lost within 6 months of his birth. I am now approaching my 12 year surgiversary and I have crept up to 180 lbs. I am so mortified and disappointed in myself; and I understand it is also due to the lack of fullness after so long. I am going back to my original surgeon to discuss revision options. My question is, I have NJ Family Care / Horizon BCBS of NJ and there isn't much online as to whether they typically cover weight loss surgery revisions. I am so nervous because my insurance barely wanted to cover a root canal and this is obviously much more invasive. The other problem I have is chronic pain, as I had back surgery in 2013 following a car accident. The added weight has worsened all of my issues and I am dealing with horrible sciatica with the weight gain. I just wish I felt full. I do not drink, smoke, or do illicit drugs. I just would like to know if based on my circumstances if I can be approved by Medicaid for the revision. Thanks for reading and for any advice.- 2 replies

My male friend started at 500 lbs. and lost 100 with the sleeve. He has a serious eating disorder he has tried to get help for for years. When he stopped losing at 400 he got a revision to the bypass and has lost another 100 lbs. He really needed something where he could not binge like he used to. I think you should do it for the GERD and it's likely you may lose more depending on your habits.

I 100% agree with you. I miss my sleeve. I was on the way to getting esophageal cancer from GERD...Btw, I still have acid problems, just not as bad....so I had to get revised to the bypass. I hate it. I can't possibly understand how less stomach let's me eat more?? Idk, I feel like I am. I've only lost 20lbs in 2+ months also. So miserable and nauseous all of the time, don't get me started on toilet stuff....ugh. HATE THIS -

Hey meow! I decided on bypass just because I felt it would be more beneficial to me. I was also nervous about having some issues later on down the road with the sleeve and didn’t want to have to have a revision surgery. I am 27, 5’7” and My starting weight was 258. I had surgery on May 14th (2 weeks ago) and I feel great! And I’m already down 23 pounds! I have had some emotional days....but I’m still very happy with my decision ❤️ -
Hello! I'm officially in the revision family! Everything went well and I arrived home earlier today. Your posts helped so much because from the time I was out of recovery, I walked every hallway that I could every 3 hours. It really helped with the pain and gas. Well, I'm seven pounds heavier than when I went in but...has to be fluid from the IV ' I only drank 30ml at a time! Just following up.

vaping
Tracyringo replied to vermontgirl152@hotmail.com's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Our bariatric center wont do WLS unless you are nicotine free for 3 months. They do urine tests 2 weeks before and the day of to make sure you are nicotine free or no surgery. I had been a smoker for 30+ years and quit because I wanted this more then smoking. Its really a win win . I quit by vaping with non nicotine vape . Then a year later I started back up. Then I quit again for my breast reduction ( same thing no breast reduction with nicotine in system}You would think that would be it but no I am relentless and started yet AGAIN. I quit for this revision ( yes this is the 3rd time in 3 years) and I will never go back. Its just too hard to keep doing to myself and I actually like being a non smoker ! -
Have you tried Dexilant ? That sleeve will give you restriction with all foods. That wont be the case with the bypass. ( at least not for me and others posting on this page) If you read through this thread there are a couple of ladies who have posted how much weight they have lost and how much harder it is . I am sure if your Dr. feels you need a revision you will lose the 30 lbs but something is telling me it will be harder to keep off if you are using the sleeves restriction to tell you when to stop eating. I am only a week in but that is what it is feeling like to me at this time. GL

I'm one year out of my VSG surgery. I have GERD really bad. NO meds have helped. I also feel like food gets stuck in my throat. My doc has set me up for an EGD. Depending on the results, he said we would probably revise my sleeve to a bypass. What is the success like? I have gained 30 lbs. back. I am so embarrassed. Will the bypass help me get more weight off??

I probably read over it, but why did you revise? I was a bandmember from 2009-2017 and lost about 89#. (232#-143#). Lost it due to a slip, due to a stomach flu. Was WLS free for 2.5 years and gained 30#. Day of sleeve 8/28/19 (tomorrow is 9 mths) 173#.... today 126#. I'm worried about regain with the sleeve. funny that i was never fearful of regain with the band. I had much better control with the band than with the sleeve. I've done great with the sleeve.... but i seen how people slowly increase their food and regain. Right now i'm still at the 2-3 bites and i'm full, but i'm hungry again sooner. With the band i was hardly ever hungry. -
Anyone have a leak after surgery?
ndyoung77 replied to Ruth D's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So 12 days post op of my revision from band to sleeve I woke up to a 102.9 fever. Went to ER after talking with my Dr. once I got to ER after blood work I was Being admitted and treated for Sepsis. After more testing I had a leak. I spent 6 days in the hospital had a Stent place in my stomach and the abscess removed. I’m certainly at home on day 3 with a TPN bag. Absolutely nothing by mouth and IV to keep me alive pretty much. I have a very long road to recovery. -
That is what I am going to do too and I know I can do it . I am just not happy about it and I don't understand why some get restriction with revision and not others and no one told me from the Drs. office. They had me down at hospital to be taking in 8 oz of full liquids each meal. Really ? I could not understand why. I cannot wait to get to my appointment Thursday. I weighed 296lbs the day of my surgery ( sleeve) and in 2 months I only lost 27 lbs. I hung in there and made goal by following the plan the first year. my original goal of 180. I went on to loose down to 164.8 the lowest I ever got and stayed there all last summer was on my way back down and decided to hold steady thinking there was going to be some big weight loss and I didn't want to be too thin for my frame, SHEESH had I only of known, lol. Went in Friday weighing 180 and came out Sunday 185. This morning 181 lmao

I had my revision in March and lost 40 pounds. I had my sleeve in March ( 5 years ago ) and on this date lost 55 pounds so it’s definitely slower and I’m actually exercising and counting calories etc this time around. I’m trying to restrict myself just like the sleeve so I’m only eating protein and a very small amount at each sitting and drinking a lot a lot of water. It’s hard because that never full feeling is depressing. It makes food and eating ALL I can think about. I’m trying to occupy my time with other things also -
Good luck to you and I truly mean that. I will be watching for your progress and maybe we can share being so close together in revision surgeries. Ya know I had read this thread before having the revision and heard the girl saying she had no restriction and I either commented or thought everyone is different and that maybe you don't feel it yet because we are numb from just being cut on ? I hope that is the case. I would like to lose 20 lbs so hoping this malabsorption thing is for real with this bypass. On a happy note if you are doing this because of GERD I haven't felt a thing ! I cant say its gone yet as they have me on my PPI for 3 months. I do believe it is gone though I have had no burning whatsoever !

i'm being revised tomorrow and I'm a nervous wreck!!! Unsure why - been anxious for a few days.. I was so ready in March, then April, and here I am and nervous! -
I think it's different when you have/had a bypass the first time around ... Unsure why - but thats my opinion. Sleeve to Bypass, I would assume is the same thing - it's a bypass. I'm being revised tomorrow and I'm a nervous wreck!!! Unsure why - been anxious for a few days.. I was so ready in March, then April, and here I am and nervous!

Summerset thank you so much !! You hit the nail on the head on so many things. I don not feel as crappy or wore down as I did after the sleeve. I can drink just as I did the day before the revision and I asked the surgeon about that and he said it was okay just a mouthful at a time. Chobani yogurt is 5 oz and I just ate one for breakfast different brand with 15 grams of protein, no problems. It is very scary because I have no idea of what I am living with now and how this is going to work. I will say I have not gotten sick and thrown up on anything yet, but I didn't with the sleeve either so I am hopeful there, but what is this gas thing and is this something that is forever with the bypass ? Thank you for making me feel not alone, I really do appreciate it.

It is early. I'm always surprised how early patients are discharged sometimes. Routine discharge here is on 5th post-op day but only when all post-op labs, ultrasound and cinematography are fine. Sleeve must be so different. I can't imagine the level of restriction patients must be having. From what I saw when I was at the clinic (for whatever procedure...) the bypass people seemed to have less issues drinking their fluids and felt less crappy after surgery. How big is a Chobani yoghurt, like how many grams? One yoghurt wasn't a problem for me either. The "being full after three spoonfuls" seems to be one of the many WLS myths that by far not all patients experience. I never did. Back in the days it did kind of scare me as well. Today I'm grateful for the amount of food I can eat (or rather could before revision, at the moment I'm eating more frequently but the meals are smaller). It makes eating life feel more normal. You're only a few days post-op. You didn't really want to have this surgery (meh, how I can relate to this...) and I feel this contributes to this "feeling awful and frustrated". We didn't go into this with the high expectations of someone who gets the first WLS. No weight to lose, no weight-loss-rewards rolling in, no awesome changes in life how people treat you differently because you've lost weight. We hope for no pain, no complications and we certainly hope that we won't experience any weight gain because of revision. Fear/Anxiety, not hope, is the predominant feeling for many people having revision because of some other reason than "weight loss". Will my weight stay stable? Will my reflux really be gone? I don't know if the "weight gain thought" is really a rational thought to have but it's nagging in the back of my brain since surgery, messing up my relationship with food (again). It slowly gets better but there is still this in my head: "Is long limb RNY as good as MGB when it comes to maintaining weight?! Will I magically start gaining weight even though I don't eat more than before with the MGB?! Will I be fine in the future with this surgery weight wise?! What if reflux comes back?! What if this was the wrong decision?!" I totally get your thoughts and feelings and I hope it makes you feel less alone.

This is interesting. I have not heard this before, but then again I have not looked into a revision (I am only 5 months post-op) Maybe you can speak with a surgeon about a revision or speak to a doctor in a medically supervised weight loss program. I wish you the best. -

Pre-Op Liquids Only. I am SO HUNGRY!!!!
Ann777 replied to pmh22's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow! We 're running back to back with our current weight stats and my surgery is tomorrow -revising band to sleeve! Best! -
I can’t stop trying to find answers. I have experienced migraines for years, but approximately two years after my sleeve surgery I began experiencing intractable migraines and headaches. I have been seeking treatment for years, am in numerous meds, and get botox therapy... and it’s still a struggle. I recently had revision to RNY... but honestly these migraines started initially two years post op my sleeve. Has anyone else had this? They’ve greatly impacted my quality of life.

Wow, I can see where you would be possibly unhappy with the effects you are dealing with ( I read your pros and cons). Are you currently thinking of changing back to sleeve? Did you lose your extra weight you were needing to lose when you revised to the DS? Was the actual surgical recovery painful or difficult? I am sure you are trying everything possible, but , curious if diet changes are having any impact on the gastrointestinal issues at hand that you are living with. Thank you for sharing! @Wisconsin_Gal

What’s your weight loss after 6 months and what was you starting weight?
JRT Mom replied to Abcdefg's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm VERY pleased. I'm a revision from a slipped lap band to RNY and was told by many (but not my surgeon) it would be hard to get any real success. But I'm 6 months out and have lost 59 pounds. I'm only 5 pounds from my goal, and weigh almost 20 pounds less than the lowest weight I got to after my band! I chose the weight of 140 because it's the highest weight that puts me in the "normal" BMI range. You might want to base your goal by your BMI rather than your scale weight. Good Luck!
