    Day 5 of Recovery

I had a good nights sleep last night again. Sleep is really key to feeling better. Some soreness at the laproscopy areas. I have 5. I've taken quick showers since I've been home but the bandage strips are still intact. It will take a few weeks for them to come off I think. My stomach muscles are tender but getting their strength back. I can sit up on the side of the bed with little trouble. I woke up feeling good. I still used the body pillow against me though. I felt so good I thought I'd go out to the grocery store to pick up some protein shakes and some cream soups. Unfortunately I overdid it and walked a bit too much. My stomach started hurting and I just wanted to sit down. Riding in the car was a little uncomfortable too. Thankfully my daughter was able to drive us home. She's getting her license next month. I had some HEB yogurt drink for breakfast before we left this morning and some blended and strained cream of potato soup for lunch after we got back. It was a nice change from all the juices. I am noticing that I get hungry from time to time. I still feel the gurgling gas quite a bit. Each day it gets a bit better though. I'm also taking a chewable multivitamin every day. I got a sample from my surgeons office. I've got to remind myself to drink more water though. I've noticed I sometimes go for a few hours without a sip and I really shouldnt do that.

    Day 11

Today started with a Migraine. Unfortunately my daughter had a few doctors appointments that I had to take her to so I wasnt able to shove my head under the covers. I had a small yogurt drink that didnt sit to well on my stomach. I also started having some allergy issues today too. I've been coughing and sneezing. Maybe the two are related? I felt a little feverish earler but checked my temp a few times and it was fine. We finally made it home and I just slumped on the sofa. I felt so sick all over. I just did too much I think. I take my hat off to those of you who are able to return to a full days work within a few days after this surgery. I couldnt have done it if I were working right now. I was so worn out from 2 doctor visits and a short walk through the mall with my daughter. I feel better now that I've had a chance to curl up in bed for a bit. I've had a glass of water too. I'm hoping a good nights sleep will get me back on track.:frown:

    When does the light shine

Hang in there. It does get better. I am almost 8 weeks and I noticed that I started to feel so much better once I started to eat some food. Yogurt, beans, cottage cheese (since I am vegetarian) really helped a lot. I think that it is super important to find a protein drink or powder that you can tolerate. I've tried so many of them. Even the unflavored Unjury didn't agree with me. I did have good luck with using high protein milk and Unjury Chocolate Spendor and Syntrax Nectar Latte Cappuccino. Also using sugar free syrups to alter the shake flavors helped me. Now that I have a system down that I can tolerate, I have been feeling much better. I feel better than I did before surgery.

    Aussie product equivalents?

My dietician gave me the following advice and I hope this helps you. After surgery your on a liquid diet for approximately 2 weeks. Must be in liquid form, thin enough to pass through a straw, smooth, has no lumps and no fizzy. Suitable fluids Commercial Protein drinks Plain Water Coffee/tea Drinking yogurt fruit juice Vegetable Juice Tin strained soup/stocks They also recommend you take a liquid Multivitamin. For constipation take prune juice or benifiber. Hope this information helps you, I could email you the information which will be in more detail if you like, just email me your email address.

    Tasty Soups?????

I just make up soup recipes, I get creative with what's left in the bottom of the vegie drawer. Usually I'll use a base of butternut pumpkin (I think that's squash to you guys?), and chuck in whatever I have. I always sautee some bacon and onion first, then for the stock or broth I use Vegeta seasoning (its just a vegetable powdered stock). I dont make it too watery, I like thick soup. I just puree this all up, serve with a dollop of natural or greek yogurt. One favourite is zucchini and leek - again sautee onion and bacon, then add in a couple of sliced leeks and 3 or so zucchini, about a cup of Water and sweat it all down so the flavour is really intense, then add in your broth/stock, simmer till its all soft enough to be pureed - at this stage, I often puree in some light sour cream or natural yogurt. I make a really yummy one - pumpkin soup (either canned or home made) with some crunchy Peanut Butter, sour cream and curry powder blended in - that one's a real meal due to all the calories in the pb and sour cream. I'm a real fan of stew style soups too but those are chunky and have bits of meat, not really for liquid stage. I find I cant go past good old Heinz Cream of Tomato soup - love love love it, made with milk and with a grilled cheese sandwich - ah, comfort food for Friday night dinner. And very occasionally, I get a yen for a cup-a-soup. Any Thai inspired soup is a hit round here too - a good laksa cant be beat (but again, not a real liquid due to chicken or prawns and noddles),, and we all love Tom Yum soup.

    Meal prepping

I only had to pack lunch, I eat breakfast and dinner at home. My usual was either Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with a little nut butter or PB2, or a couple of slices of deli meat (roast turkey, roast beef etc.) and maybe a slice of cheese in a roll-up. I kept it very simple. I would also take a couple of protein shakes as snacks, to make sure I hit my protein goals for the day -- Premier Protein was my usual brand.
  7. Protein shakes at breakfast and lunch. Then a snack of nonfat greek yogurt for 5 days. A simple small dinner. You will get back on track and drop 4 pounds. If you exercise ssome, maybe 5 pounds in a week.

Not even yogurt? Fage with raspberry sugar free syrup is my new favorite....
  9. BabyNicole, I got into big trouble with a sugar free soft food/liquid part of post-surgery. I got to the point where I preferred the soft food because of the obvious problems you have at first with solids. I got addicted to sugar free/fat free yogurt mixed with sugar free cool whip and sugar free Jello and would even add a tablespoon of sugar free orange marmalade. I know this sounds like a weird combo but for a while it was all I could stomach and craved. Any food can become a problem for "some" people unfortunately. Now I have to stay away from sugar free!!!!

    Not doing good with foods!

Try eating less. Maybe a tablespoon is all your body can handle right now. Believe me any less and I would be eating air. I have found that some of the foods I loved and could tolerate before DO NOT agree with my body. I have to stick with water and lowfat, no fruit yogurts for now. The sugar content in most of those Greek yogurts are ridiculous. I haven't touched those. My sugar intake should be less than 10g. I ate a small amount of butternut squash Soup and I can already feel that's not gonna work for me either. By the time I'm done with this pre-op diet I will be on a whole different diet. Not complaining, actually excited to see where this will go. I will find a whole knew way of eating....goodness knows I don't need to go back into old eating habits.

What vitamins are u taking ?

I take Trader Joe's Chewable High Potency Multis (bought at Trader Joe's of course). I pick up whatever Vitamin D supplement is on sale at Kroger or CVS. The rest I get from Amazon - Wellesse liquid iron, Citracal Petites (for the first 4 weeks after surgery I used Wellesse liquid calcium instead), and Bariatric Advantage Chewable Probiotic. I buy the Equate brand of sugar free fiber supplement -- same fiber as in Benefiber but fewer calories and carbs, also cheaper -- and add it as needed to my protein shakes and yogurt. Wellesse also makes liquid multivitamins and B complex if you prefer liquid to chewable or gummy.

  15. I've always loved breakfast casserole, but most of them are more bread than protein. Not this one! One serving (and I could only eat 1/2 a serving) has 140 calories, 12g of protein and only 3g of carbs. 1 1/2 cups ham (cubed or shredded) 6 oz plain Greek yogurt 1/4 cup crushed crackers (saltines/Ritz) 1/4 cup shredded cheese 2 tablespoons margarine 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion (I used onion flakes) 6 eggs Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray an 8x8 pan. Melt the margarine in a large bowl. Add the ham, yogurt, crackers, cheese and onion. Stir. Beat the eggs in a separate bowl, then stir into the first mixture. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until center is firm. Let stand before serving. 9 servings. Source: Breakfast Casserole: High protein, low carb!

    Breakfast ideas please

This is weird but soooo good, it is called Bircher Muslei....it is a cold oatmeal dish that you can make ahead of time. Just search on google for recipes for the exact ingredients but here is what I do: Take a tupperware container and put 3 cups of dry oatmeal in it. Cover with non fat milk, 2 tsp of vanilla extract and a 1/4 cup of orange juice. Chill in fridge at least overnight. The next morning I take a 1/4 cup of the 'oatmeal' mixture, 1/4 cup of greek yogurt or any other non fat plain yogurt, 5-6 fresh berries, 1 TBL slivered almonds and maybe a packet or two of splenda. I sometimes add some fat free half and half. Stir and enjoy. It is really good, easy for me since I work long hours, I have a weeks worth of breakfast made in a snap. Try it.

I just dont eat muffins - donuts anymore
  18. Ok, so. My surgeon's instructions are to eat small bites, and wait a while between bites. I am doing that. But how much did you guys eat in those first weeks after surgery. I have seen some do 1/4 cup, and I was afraid to go beyond like 1 TBSP or 2 TBSP, so I am not really sure if I am eating enough? If that makes sense. I have tried yogurt, refried Beans, and egg salad. I eat very little of it and notice no difference physically. Now, the Protein shakes... How long does it take you to finish an 8 oz one? I have yet to finish one. Wondering if theres something else I can do to get one down. I am afraid to drink too much too fast. I guess I have anxiety over messing up and doing it wrong. My followup is Tuesday with the surgeon.

    Mens Stats

First off everone is different and you can't compare what one person has lost to another. If you are losing and things are going well - then things are working for you. That being said... I am 90 Days out from surgery. I have lost an average of just over 4 lbs per week since surgery - some weeks more some weeks less. That's about 57 lbs since surgery and another 20 lbs lost pre-op from the pre-op diet for a total of 77 lbs. I've not been in the gym at all but have been more active (swimming, walking, kayaking, etc). As far as intake, my regular day is Greek yogurt, egg substitute or Protein shake for Breakfast, small protein rich lunch (Soup and sashimi, burger - no bun, yogurt, etc) , small protein rich diner (chicken, pork, turkey, beef - all w/ veg) and usually a small snack (yogurt, fat free/sugar free pudding) . Chili has been good with Beans and made with turkey. Not many carbs if I can help it. I have not been perfect - I've had some pizza and a beer or two and I've indulged a few times when going out to dinner. Total daily calories usually add up to about 900-1100 on a normal day.

    Hair Loss After Vsg

This terrifies me. After my weight, my hair is my biggest problem. It's super super fine and frizzy and doesn't grow at all, maybe 2 to 3 inches PER YEAR. Yup, YEAR. So if I get the surgery, I'm doomed? Here's what I don't understand. I've dieted in the past, once basically starving myself for a couple years. I ate hardly anything and took few Vitamins and almost no Protein (lived on fat-free frozen yogurt and coffee) and exercised 2-3 hours per day, but I didn't lose any hair. This was not healthy living, but hair stayed the same. I didn't even lose any hair after my pregnancies. Yeah, I have crappy hair, but at least it's consistent. So it can't just be the weight loss, right? What about WLS does this?
  21. I'm 5 wks post op n find that I'm actually hungry every couple of hrs. When I am I'm not able to eat very much and am still on soft cheese, soft fish, yogurt, eggs, etc. Is this normal or should I b worried that I'm feeling hunger so frequently. I'll add that I'm sure it's not head hunger or acid. It's actual hunger.
  22. Thanks, everyone! Like I said, I met the Protein requirements during the liquid stage, but not since they scaled back the number of shakes for the pureed stage. I don't think it can be good for my body. I will try it for a few days to see how I feel. I don't want my body to start cannibalizing my muscles! I do have Greek yogurt. Last night I felt guilty about having an "extra" meal so grabbed the first "allowable" protein I saw.

Had my surgery 3 weeks ago.

Hi, oh dear, your situation sounds challenging. I’m 3 weeks out also, to be exact. 16 days, and healing ok, inside and out. Very little nausea, onto soft mushy food.. Did you have a upper GI the day after surgery? The Dr. then checks for any leakage and/ or problems after surgery and if so, keeps you in the hospital for further observation/ correction. It’s pretty standard procedure..Yes, your abdomen and stomach will be swollen a bit after surgery, normal, but your situation sounds unique. In comparison, I take my chewable bariatric vitamins daily, Isopure Protein Drink and Premiere Protein Drink, 1 Greek yogurt, smushed banana or avocado when the mood strikes,..Refried beans have been ok, not spicy..sugar free jello is nice. Campbell’s chicken noodle soup. (more soup than noodle) and constant hydration.. your getting hydrated and nutrition through your IV. which is great. The calories add up quick so, I would keep at at about 1,000 in the future, once your situation stabilizes..Maybe your body is going through a shock or serious readjustment. Maybe your very sensitive to surgery.. it’s possible your liver or gall bladder is acting up.. if your dialing back any medication after surgery, that could be giving you headaches. Protein is the key. For future reference, Unjury medical quality protein powder can be added to anything to bump up the protein levels.. but, I did meet a gal last week who couldn’t have the surgery because she couldn’t tolerate any protein due to kidney or liver problems (I can’t remember which,, geez). I’m so sorry..your experiencing this. I would ask some hard questions if this doesn’t start to ease up in another week.. Hopefully it will, and this event will be a distant memory.. Hang in there...Good Luck!!
