Partner/ spouse support
Nomorepasta replied to Nomorepasta's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi!! Thanks so much for ur post!! I need to do some very deep soul searching before my next Dr.’s visit because as much as I want and need to lose the weight I am still conflicted. I am truly afraid of certain risk factors and long /short term side effects of the surgery. ( I think more than most because I have been through 7 surgeries and have had post op issues with all except one). I realize that staying at my current weight is also a health risk. I do nothing but think, research, and complicate about this 24/7. -
When I went for my appt with the nutritionist, I was told based on my weight, etc. I needed to take in 77 grams of Protein a day while healing. No one has told me to have less and my surgery was 8 weeks ago. I know that SOMEWHERE I saw a formula for figuring out how much protein I should have now that I'm over 40 pounds thinner. Just can't find it of course. Does anyone know the formula to which I'm referring? It wasn't the .4% g/lb....it was a more complicated formula. If anyone knows it, or if anyone weighs about 270 and was given an amount, that's what I'd go by. Thanks very much.

Complication fears
bones_girl206 replied to laGata15's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have avoided the complications portion at all costs, because knowing about them isn't going to make the situation better. I signed my forms last week basically telling me what the worse case scenario was and I have been an anxiety ball ever since. There's enough people available to tell me about the bad stuff, but with PCOS, adrenal issues, and thyroid problems I was already heading for a future I don't like. So, this is the thing I can control and follow through with. We're all going to be okay. -
So, my 4 weeks is officially today. I've lost 26lbs. I should be thrilled, right? Nope. I have this total mental derp happening that makes me feel like I will somehow be the only person in gastric bypass history to ONLY lose 26lbs and that's it. I'm done. No more weight loss. lol! I think because I've had so many failures in the past, I just anticipate this being another one of them... even though I am following everything the best I can (in light of my ulcer, I am low on protein - working on it!) I also have a mental derp against protein shakes. Aside from my whey allergy and getting super nauseous... back in 2009 I had liposuction when I was a mere 140lbs. After surgery I drank TONSSSS of muscle-building/weight-gaining protein shakes because the plastic surgeon said I needed them for muscle recovery. Welp, I gained 40lbs doing that! I had no guidance and was an idiot, basically. But that's where the weight gain started - so I have a creeper lurking in my brain that protein shakes = weight gain = super morbid obesity. I am trying to get over it; I have a sweet home gym and was just told yesterday I am not allowed to exercise because my protein is currently too low. So, that has motivated me more and I started a soy shake last night. Gunna keep it up. I feel like I have conquered so many of my cravings-issues, though. I read just a few chapters in Never Binge Again and it is so helpful. I highly recommend that book. I feel very in control, and did have one mishap the other day when I got very stressed (I overate, but not a "banned food")... we're all human, though. Why are our brains so self-defeating?! I know I am championing through this in light of the complication and there is NO reason I will fail... unless I set myself up for it. So, nipping it in the bud now, for sure. But it sure is hard to overcome some of those mental blocks. If it wasn't, I'm sure most of us wouldn't be here. Just my random blurb o' the day.

No imagination at all...hee hee...I think I was on a holiday sugar high at the time and I can't be responsible for my actions. The two of you are a little newer here than I am, but I'm sure you're doing your research and should feel comfortable with your decision (I'm sure I'll be a ball of nerves right before my surgery too...everyone is). My opinion only...If you know the work that you're going to have to do to make this tool work for you, and what can potentially happen if you don't follow the rules, as well as possible complications, then you should know now whether it's a good choice for you. Personally, I think this 6 mo. diet I'm on is a little long, but I've been researching this for over 3 mo. and only now do I feel really comfortable with it. I can't imagine being one of those that has the surgery a few weeks after starting to look into this...I think those are the people who are surprised that the LB doesn't do it for you, how hard it is, problems they have. It's not the right choice for everyone. I can follow a diet and an exercise program and I don't mind that the weight will come off slowly, have done so before. I have a person close to me that cannot, but would be better suited for a different procedure. I'll be nervous at my surgery, but most of that will be nervous anticipation and excitement at getting the tool I need to make this work. Good luck with your upcoming new-you's! Keep me posted as to how you're doing!

How much weight lost in 2 months?
KimmyTx replied to lml398's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone is different so it's hard to tell. Some people lose a lot, some lose a little. Some have complications, some don't. I will be at my two-months mark next week and have lost 33 pounds since my surgery but have been fortunate enough to have had no complications. -
Did you loose your belly button? I hear one of the complications are loosing a belly button? After my surgery I want to get one too...(after I pop out a few more kids) lol. But I am scared of loosing my belly button.

Lizzie, The only thing that really requires immediate attention for a lapband is being too tight and not being able to keep liquids down. Slips, erosions and most complications are things that happen over time you don't even know they are going on. Surgery doesn't have to be the same day it can wait. My first slip I was traveling and I knew something was wrong but I couldn't get to TO so it waited a few weeks to get looked at. So don't stress over 90% of the complications they more than likely won't happen to you and won't be life threatening that is the nice thing about the band. The worst you can experience is a band too tight to keep liquids down and that becomes dangerous in several ways, dehydration etc. Heather

Hi Shelly, Glad I didn't scare ya off honey! LOL! I just wanted you to know the truth, he's tough, but it's tough love. If this is the groove that you need to get ya going, so be it. I accepted it completely, and it's proved to be what I needed to gain accountability for my eating. I started eating and acting like a Bandster. I ate my Protein first, then non-starchy veggies and avoided bread for the most part. I worked hard to stick with reasonable portions and calorie limits. Eating with smaller spoon helps, as does remembering to drink all the Water, at least 64 oz a day. I chose to stop drinking with meals too. Call it training, chew chew chew, this is something that is way too easy to forget. LOL! I worked on getting three meals a day, little or no snacking, and worked very hard on clearing out the junk food in my house. I measured portions for everyone, including my three kids, and hubby. I dished up meals, planned nutritonally balanced wholesome foods and cut out all trips to any fast food places...no candy, no chips, no Cookies, etc. I will be honest, there were times when my resolve was severely tested, I redirect as much as possible, and spend my days wearing my shoes. IF my mood hits, I am out the door stomping out my frustrations and getting my blood pressure and heart rate up for a good reason. It helped me to journal my thoughts too. I went from complete and total lathargic mode to insominia. LOL! On this Thursday, I will be post op 8 weeks. I had considered RNY at one time, but the risks scared me...the potential for complications was not something I was willing to accept. With three kids, 8,7 and 5, I can't accept that I may have risked so much more to be thin. So far, my experience has been a good one with only a minor blip in the whole trip. Once I understood that life on the otherside wouldn't be as restricted, I knew that I could live within my new limits...that I would be allowed the control in my life that I craved. Not only has it helped me lose 42 pounds total, with 29 since surgery, I've gained so much mentally. That call from Sherry will come soon enough!!! Hang in there and do what ya can to prepare! ((HUGS)) Linda

I had mine on Friday and took one week off but went in the Wednesday after surgery for a few hours for a meeting. Other than being tired no reason you can't get through the day at your desk. Unless you have complications or a really long commute which may tire you out before you get there. I'm surprised people take 4-5 weeks off. Minimal pain. Mostly just discomfort and you're tired. Try not to go back before Tuesday or even Wednesday. Monday definitely too soon. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I am starting to wonder about my choice.
lianna replied to dovie6523's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
There are 8,030 members of this forum. Granted not all are active members, but with the sheer number of people that are banded and post you ARE going to hear about some complications. The percentage of complications with the lapband is actually very low.....and even slips, erosion, etc...are treatable. I really weighed the risk of a complication against the GARAUNTEE that I would have health related issues if I didnt lose this weight. For me it was a no brainer....I already had borderline high BP, insulin resistance, and high cholesterol...all obesity related. I was pretty much the highest risk possible for heart disease. I am already on the road to better health. I no longer take BP meds (BP now 120/72!). I have cut my Metformin dose for Insulin Resistance. My last bloodwork showed my cholesterol has dropped to only borderline high. I wish I had done this sooner! Huge bonus is being able to fit in Misses size 16 right now and be able to wear cute clothes again, and looking so much better! -
It depends on how you feel honestly I could have went back in 1 week but took 2 weeks so that I could attend my first post opt appointment I had no complications and I was feeling great . Good luck .

Complications are a reality, but if you look at the statistics they are still on the low end. On day three my spleen decided to bleed for the fun of it and it was rough, but it was a fluke thing that happened. This site draws in a lot of people and many are only going to post when something is wrong so it can skew things. Despite having complications myself I really wouldn't worry about it. Just follow your doctor's guidelines to the letter and you should do just fine.

The difference in size from a 32 to a 38 is pretty minimal - we're talking a few millimeters. However, as Chimera says, some studies seem to indicate that there are fewer complications with a slightly larger sleeve, plus there's a bit more to work with should you develop a leak that needs repair. The difference in weight loss appears to be minimal to none.

Thinking strongly about Gastric Bypass
jrmoseley replied to Erin18's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I agree. It's perfectly normal to have all those feelings. It means you're taking it seriously. I had all those feelings before my RnY bypass last year, and I also had all those feelings before I had my hysterectomy 15 years ago! I ended up having an emergency hysterectomy, so that choice was less scary in a way. I needed it to save my life, and there was no more thinking about it! But at 57, with high blood pressure, borderline diabetes, joint problems and Barrett's esophagus, my health was also quite precarious before this surgery, too. I'm glad I did it. I didn't have any complications, but those first few months were tough as I had to relearn how to eat and form a new "relationship" with food. It only took three months for my blood pressure and blood sugar to normalize and to no longer need the acid reflux medications. My joint issues are greatly improved because I can move more and I get more exercise, which reduces inflammation. I've lost 105 lbs as of this morning and I'm still losing, albeit slower than I did in the beginning. I feel very lucky. My advice, for what it's worth, is do your research, and seek the very best medical team you can find and afford. Just those two things will ease your mind alot. Then you have to reach a point where the risks involved (surgery always involves risks) are outweighed by the consequences of doing nothing. And that point is different for everyone. Good luck. You will make the decision that's best for you, at the time that it works for you. -
Thanks MattZ for your informative reply. It is good to know poop smell can be controlled by diet. I also have very low Vit D already. Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) actually has a lot less complications and has replacing RYN in many countries. Thanks again HK

terrified & excited
SanDiegoUbermom replied to luv2luv's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I know just what you’re talking about. I’m up for surgery on the 11th her in San Diego, CA. I too have thought about this long and hard. I first heard about Gastric Bypass back in 1994 and thought I might want to do that. I am so happy that I didn’t. Knowing what I know now and all of their complications and that it are not reversible. I'm very happy that I didn't do that surgery. I wanted something that would take time. I didn’t want an immediate lose of weight either. I wanted to learn from it, have a chance to tone up and w/a family of 6 I needed to teach them about good eating too. I too have been healthy all my life. It’s only w/in the last year that my Rt knee has been a problem and I’m hoping that it will be solved w/the weight being gone, also my lower back issues that I’ve had every since 2000. My latest issue is I need to have my gallbladder out at the same time. I was just told this week about that. If there are any complications in the removal (leakage) they will not band me and I’ll have to reschedule. But the doctor assures me that they’ve done this many times and w/out complications. So I’ve been fighting that fear of failure and I don’t want to start this stupid 10 day liquid diet again. I has a small set back because of the news and ate food. Of course my body said “what in the hell are you doing to me” and w/in 2 hours I was visiting the bathroom w/the runs. I’m dealing with it better now and am on the right track again. Talking to people like you really helps. I too love this site and all the people from all over. A moto that another bander has “faith not fear”. Find you faith and stomp the fear and you will pull through this with flying colors! -
How much weight does one generally lose with gastric sleeve surgery?
KateBruin replied to Amjo's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was 267 and currently weigh around 177. Sleeved end of August. I think I look like I’ve lost more because I’ve put on a bunch of muscle. I will say I tracked every calorie at first but now do intuitive eating since I’ve had complications and I work out twice a day 5 days a week. But I also have Hashimoto’s so I think I’ve possibly had to work harder for the loss. -
Day 1 Post Op: The Unexpected & My Extended Hospital Stay...
Sleevedreamz replied to Sleevedreamz's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have never had surgery before this so I didn't really know what to expect. It is natural to have some anxiety, but I really surprised myself by being ok until I woke up with this dreaded pain all over my body. My understanding is that there is 1.5% chance of it happening so perhaps I shouldn't have played the lottery before my surgery. I am sure you will be fine. Maybe I've hogged the 1% chance this time and your safe to go have a complication free surgery. The medication that caused the reaction is the paralytic they use for intubation called "succinocholine". You can look up "postoperative myalgia" online and there is some general info. Basically, all of my muscles contracted so much during surgery that they are pretty much useles for a few days until they have time to repair and heal themselves. Kind of like I worked out every muscle in my body nonstop and they are just fatigued to the point of not working at all. I'll keep everyone posted as to how long this lasts. Hopefully not much longer bc I can't stand being in pain or confined to this bed. :/ When is your surgery? -
I'm sorry you are going through that Erica. I doubt some of the complications you went through helped in your weight loss. I am not judging you, but you said you are eating the wrong foods and not sticking to the advice you were given. Why? Fills won't do anything if you are drinking while eating, snacking or having slider foods. The cycle of guilt, overeating, then hating myself because I "failed" is what made me fat to begin with so I am trying not to be "perfect" this time, but eat in a way I can live with long term. Willpower is difficult but necessary for ANY type of WLS.

The wait/weight is killing me! Lol
k-athy replied to Aijan's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Who was your surgeon? And when you had the rash were you able to get ahold of your surgeon about your complication and did he address it? -
I've definitely experienced my fair share of stuck episodes, pb-ing, and vomiting, especially early on. It's definitely a learning experience, no matter how motivated you are to stick to the diet or follow the rules -- I didn't become overweight from eating healthy and exercising, that's for sure! Lol The reason this time was different, at least for me, is because I've never had a time where it was hard for me to even keep liquids down. I've irritated my pouch before and had to keep off solid foods for a day or two until it calmed down, but Protein shakes and Water were never a problem. I wouldn't quite say I ran to the doctor at the first sign of trouble, but I didn't want to risk there being a serious complication and ignoring it...the band has changed my life, or rather I have changed my life, by getting the band and making it work. I definitely understand what you said about blaming the band, or people saying it didn't work for them. I don't blame the band if I get sick, since its my responsibility to make the right choices about what I put into my body. Having the band is not easy, and we all know that, or learn it the hard way. I'm not sure I needed to be unfilled, but as far as that is concerned, I trust my doctor, and I want to make sure I do everything I can to keep my band and my body in good shape...which is kind of ironic since the only shape I use to be was round, haha. I'm going to continue eating the same way I have been, with portioning out my food, eating small bites, and eating slowly...just because my band is looser does not mean anything has changed...I know that, I just think the idea of backsliding scares me.
