  1. I've looked through some other past posts, mostly 3-5+ years ago, and Googled to my fingers were numb, so I'm going to post this here and see if anyone has thoughts/suggestions. I'm just about 6-weeks post op, great weight loss, and was cruising right along until last Tuesday 9/7/21. I ended up in the ER for what I thought was a blood clot in my right leg. After a sonar, they assured me I had no clot, but I did have moderate cellulitis. The doctor put me on generic Bactrim 800 2x/day, and Cefalexin 500 x4/day, for 7 days. I have had cellulitis once before pre-op, in the opposite leg, and was on a much smaller treatment of antibiotics (just the Bactrim), and within 3 days (out of the 7 day treatment) it was practically gone! So, when this past Friday rolls around and my right leg isn't better at all I start to freak out b/c it's been 4 days of double the amount of antibiotics I've had for the same issue in the past, and when I put my sock on it still cause me to "yelp" in pain, not to mention the entire shin/left calf in hot and swollen. I call my PCP and he graciously humors me and puts me on the Oral Liquid version of Bactrim, for 10 days b/c I think the tablets aren't being absorbed. So, I've now had 6 doses of the Bactrim Liquid antibiotic, and I'm on my last day of Cefalexin, but really only feel like the leg is maybe, 10-15% better than it was a week ago? I will say that I do not have a fever, so I don't think I'm septic or anything, but it's getting in the way of my exercise and weight loss during the peak period of time when I should be working towards losing as much as possible. Should it still be this bad? Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions or things I should talk to my PCP or bariatric surgeon about? Do you think it will just take longer and I should hold my horses and take a chill pill? 😅 Thanks for your time and thoughts everyone. -Josh

  3. it's not uncommon for WLS patients who've lost a lot of weight to have skin rashes from the excess skin (although this would be under the skin "folds", not everywhere..), but I haven't read about this on this or other bariatric boards about skin issues from vitamin deficiencies. Although I just quickly googled it, and rashes and other skin issues CAN be a symptom of various vitamin deficiences. Here's one of the articles I found (below). It looks like it can be caused by any number of vitamin deficiencies, so it's hard to tell which one it is in your case. Did they test all levels? It also says they can happen to people who have malabsorption issues or have had G/I surgeries. Again, I haven't read about this on bariatric boards (and I've been hanging around on these for about seven years), so it's evidently not a common issue, but it's certainly possible that could be what's going on in your case. https://www.ccjm.org/content/83/10/731

    Burping

They told me I’d be burping and passing wind a lot at first because of the gas but I can’t imagine it’ll still be the gas 10 days later so I was just wondering if this is my life now lol

    Thinking about Lap Band surgery

I am one week after lapband removal after 19 years. I had to have an iron infusion as my iron was extremely low. Apparently iron deficiency and in many cases nutritional deficiency is a consequence of bariatric surgery (good to be aware of) as no one tells you this. I had very little weight loss on lapband surgery. I am so glad to be rid of it. Very sick of the intermittent choking and vomiting. Very annoying. I wish everyone all the very best on their decisions - I think I would rethink lapband surgery (unless it has changed dramatically in the last 19 years). Good luck.
  6. So one thing I’ve learned is that the dont’s vary WIDELY between each Bariatric doctor/clinic. The do’s are pretty much the same; mainly, focus on protein and water consumption. The dont’s and other instructions after surgery for me (per my doctor) includes NO ALCOHOL; no drinking from straws; no chewing gum; no carbonated drinks; no caffeine; no beef/red meat for the first year; deconstruct every meal; every meal to be low cal; no drinking liquids for 15 mins before and 30 mins after a meal; chew your food for 30 seconds before swallowing; eat your meal within 30 minutes; exercise/weights at least 3x a week. TAKE THE PRESCRIBED VITAMINS EVERY DAY WITHOUT FAIL - especially thiamin. Soooo - I’ve lost 140lbs - sleeved December 2019. ONE OF THE TOP BEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE. Wish I did it sooner. I struggle now with the type of foods I put into my body - I have a hankering for chocolate and cookies. 😩 BUT! 99% of the time it’s because I’m bored and will mindless eat. I have to reel it back in. It will always be a recurring process for me.
  7. Hey fellow Wisconsinite! I just had to say I can relate to many things you are saying. I had my band removed 3 years ago after 10 years. I was amazing to to eat a cheeseburger with a bun! I couldn’t have a revision at the time because my BMI was too low, but after too many cheeseburgers I am scheduled for RNY in October. I also had/have issues with acid reflux. If I could have done it 3 years ago I would have and not had to go through all of the weight gain.
  8. Hi, I have had the lap band for a little over 10 years. I had lost 100 lbs but gained 30 back. I recently found out my band migrated. I was having severe acid reflux, regurgitation, and sleepless nights of choking and puking. I finally had some testing done & they found my band migrated and there was a hernia above it and my lower esophagus was having issues pushing food through. I got my fluid taken out on Friday & I am finally able to sleep again. I am really shocked about how strange it is to be able to eat things I wasn't able to for 10 years, I am also enjoying taking a drink while eating. I am going to revise to the gastric bypass surgery & was wondering if anyone has had better success after a revision from the band to bypass? I can't do the sleeve because of my acid reflux issues. I tried to avoid bypass, as to why I had the band to begin with. Something about moving my insides around didn't sit well with me. I also see horror stories about dumping and blood sugar issues. I don't want to gain all my weight back because of a band issue & also don't want to have a removal of one thing and nothing to replace it. I am not sure how fast this will all go, they said they could do emergency surgery if I was still having issues, or do it as a normal surgery. My insurance covers revision. Hopefully soon before I gain all this weight back. I'm enjoying trying different foods I had to avoid for the past 10 yrs. hahahaha.

    Starting the process

For me, eliminating all processed sugars and white flour...had an immediate impact on my weight loss. I lost like crazy just doing these two things. I still ate a ton of carbs, but I ate good whole carbs with dietary fiber...beans, potatos, chickpeas, nuts, whole grains, whole fruits and veggies....and stayed away from white bread, processed foods, stuff with added sugar and no fiber like juices and jellies. I also eliminated processed products with fats, fried stuff, and fatty meats. Learned to put low fat plain yogurt and salt and pepper on my baked potatoes....replaced butter and animal fat in cooking with extra virgin olive oil. Everyone has a different diet they prefer...I tend to follow Mediterannian or Mayo Clinic diet. Getting your steps is brilliant and will get your metabolism going like crazy. I started at 5000 steps a day and gradually increased in little baby steps to 12,000 a day. I get 20,000 some days now because I really enjoy walking and being active...but most days are 10 to 12,000 now. Being active will help you so much. Best wishes! You got this!
  11. I lost around 70 pre-surgery (and I didn’t follow a specific program - was just trying to lose weight on my own - lost 50 before I even met with the surgeon). I was around 227 the day of surgery and by month 7 had lost all of my excess weight. It’s definitely slowed down in the last couple of months but I am below my initial goal weight (which was in the “normal” BMI range). I’m now hoping to get down to 135 but it’s really slow now and getting these “mini-stalls” where I stay around the same weight for 2-3 weeks then have a couple of weeks where I lose 1-2 lbs, rinse and repeat. I’m exercising a lot though so that may be part of it - incorporated weights after about 10 weeks post-op. I do take my measurements once a month so I can see progress there even though it’s slowing on the scale. Good luck with your surgery - you got this!

    Others noticing weight loss

Congratulations. That first time someone notices is so wonderful & so motivating too. My first time (apart from my mother) was a friend who’d known me big & small. I hadn’t seen her for a couple of months & she didn’t know about the surgery. I was wearing a slim fitting dress that was looser - when I used to wear it it would pull across my butt & I’d wear a jacket. I’d lost about 15 kg (10 post surgery) & it was early month 2. I loved how she hugged me in greeting (remember how we used to do that all the time - sigh!) & whispered in my ear I was looking great, then looked into my eyes & nodded her head. I knew she understood the battle weight loss had always been for me & was honestly happy for me & being really supportive. So much more meaningful then the loud ‘have you lost weight’ comments I got later & then the ‘you’ve lost too much’ ones.

    Others noticing weight loss

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!! Sounds familiar (the part about not being noticed after having lost so much). I have lost 75 since March and 57 since surgery in May and not many people have said anything about my weight loss. Mostly my husband and grandkids who see and feel it through hugs and whatnot. But others, not so much. I mean I have had a few friends/neighbors say something but at the same time, I don't think or feel like I lost much at all. And what's even stranger, a friend told me her weight without knowing mine, and here she's like 10 lbs heavier than I am which I find insane. I just don't see it. I see myself as WAAAAY bigger than her and find that hard to believe. I've also been walking around in my old clothes so that may contribute to no one noticing as well. LOL

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I am 46, live in WI. I also originally had the lapband and actually lost a lot of weight. I was down to 135 at one point. I had to have it removed almost 3 years ago due to complications and have almost gained all of my weight back. I will say, having it removed felt really great after having it for over 10 years.

    Day 1 Post Op

I just wanted to post my experience to help anyone who is getting the surgery, here is my experience: I had surgery yesterday around 11:30 am. When I woke up, I was in great pain. Mind you I have had multiple surgeries and major surgeries that were worse, but the middle of my chest was hurting bad because of the gas. It was dead in the middle of my chest. I thought I was having a heart attack for 14 hours, lol. Around 3:00 am this morning, the pain just disappeared like magic. Today, I have been walking, released around noon, come home took a vitamin and I am on no pain meds. Really don't need them, the stomach incisions feel like the gallbladder surgery I had in the past, no real problem. My major issue at the moment is drinking water. Every sip gives me indigestion, I am working through it, giving myself 10-15 minutes per sip. I am working on a 16 oz bottle of water, it seems I can't tolerate cold water, room temp I can. That's it. I thought I would share my experience, and if those who are on deck have any questions about the first 24-36 hours after surgeries ask any questions, and those who have had the surgery (gastric sleeve) have any advice, I sure would take it

To Lie or Not to Lie

I think it's awesome that you could be open and inspire/help strangers even if it's by a short casual conversation. Once I had a date confirmed for surgery I told my co-workers, parents and close friends as they were going to notice in time and I'd rather be upfront about it. However, have agreed with my husband not to discuss on his side of the family as his mum will repeat it to anyone who will listen. It's a bit frustrating as I'd rather be open and honest, but the judgmental in-laws don't help (always pushed me to just exercise/cross-fit without understanding my situation) nor do I think my surgery should be their gossip of the day. I've only recently been sleeved ~10 days ago and am currently in covid lock down so for now I carry on and wait and see what happens.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Boogie, I had my RNY on August 23rd.....so 16 days post Op. My energy was very low for the 1st 10 days and getting better each day but still easily fatigued. I try and walk more each day and have made it to 30 minutes but then I am gassed. Stay the course....I found my puree stage has given me more food options and more energy. Premier Protein 325 ml shakes have really helped get my protein levels over 80 grams so I reco those if you don't have them.....2 per day but sip them slowly to get them down.
  18. What @catwoman7 said. I lost 11lbs during the pre-surgery two week liquid diet and nothing else before that. My first month was my biggest loss IN POUNDS by far. But my excess weight loss percentage rate kept increasing as time went on. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S. I just took a look at my records and i suppose the second month was also comparatively high to the remaining months...from month 3 onward though, it was basically 10-ish lbs a month until goal.
  19. I am 10 days post surgery and I can drink water without any restriction at all. I drink constantly and it is really helping with the weight loss. I am down over 12 pounds since the surgery day and that does not include the 6 pounds of fluids I took on while in the hospital, so 18 pounds since discharge. I consume 600-700 calories a day and about 90 ounces of water minimum. I walk for 45 minutes a day on most days, sometimes in 2 different sessions. I am now down over 34 pounds since starting the preop diet. Follow the instructions to a T and it will really kick in.
  20. Hello forum, I'm a 50 year old Australian and proof that you can be both vegan AND morbidly obese 🙃. As I'm sure is a familiar refrain, I'm a life-long struggler with my weight. My last best effort to drop weight the analogue way (in 2019) was looking really successful - I'd gone from about 128kg down to 105kg and was SO CLOSE to two digits. I was loving fitness, and enjoying my new eating habits. Then the dreaded Panini hit us all in 2020, and the gym closed, and we locked down and I spent 2020 eating my feelings and regaining all the weight I'd lost. Again. Wit's end time, despair time, and so I decided to pursue my last hope. I did research on doctors and procedures, took out top hospital cover and dug in for the 12 month waiting period. Finally contacted my surgeon in August, and my surgery date is fast approaching. So it's almost chocks away. And I am champing at the bit for it. I cannot wait to get active and fit again.
  21. April 29th 2019 at 44 with lifelong chronic illness/disability, already had hysterectomy at 35, metabolic disorders, inability to exercise due to post exertional malaise from M.E. I was already utilizing tools of low carb low calorie yet my weight skyrocketed and I was just lost. Finally came the tool of Gastric Bypass (had to have my gallbladder removed at the same time) I was strict, eventually found it helpful to keep a daily log of weight, food, calories and protein. I reached goal by March 2020. As a lifelong tool it is very beneficial. I do not think age is a factor. Perhaps menopause can be in some ways for women but otherwise this is the Gold Standard ... never see it as a diet but a change for life and it will take you far.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I would ask why this is? My diet is pretty much the same now as it was pre-surgery, I am ingesting less than 800 calories in a day. I am losing about the same amount of weight now as pre-surgery. Am I eating too little? I am 9 days out and have lost 10 pounds since surgery
  23. ShoppGirl

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

You can’t really expect to lose the same amount as you did on the pre-op diet because the pre-op diet is designed to make you lose weight really fast. In 16 days I lost 15 pounds on pre op diet and then I didn’t lose but about 10 pounds the month following surgery.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Had my RNY August 10, and am officially 30 pounds down just in time for my 1 month surgi-versary!! Although the immediate post-op period was tough, and I regretted my decision at first, I'm now so happy I did it. I'm looking slimmer and have more energy with just the 30 pounds gone! How are my other August peeps??
  25. Well, I'm 19 months out. According to my logbook I lost the most my first month. This is my entire weight loss log post surgery if you're curious (for reference, I lost 68 pounds prior to surgery. I also have more stalls then anyone I've ever seen on this site) : 1st Month= 23 pounds 2nd Month= 15 pounds 3rd Month= 17 pounds 4th Month= 10 pounds 5th Month= 9 pounds 6th Month= 10 pounds 7th Month= 6 pounds 8th Month= 9 pounds 9th Month= 5 pounds 10th Month= 7 pounds 11th Month= 6 pounds 12th Month= 4 pounds 13th Month= 4 pounds 14th Month= 3 pounds 15th Month= 4 pounds 16th Month= 4 pounds 17th Month= 1 pound 18th Month= 5 pounds 19 Month= 1 pound
