    fast food

We have this discussion periodically in our local support group. Some people do portion control only and refuse to diet. Some people do portion control and an eating plan... or a diet counting something...carbs, fat, Protein, calories, or anti preservatives, vegetarian.... Just keep your own goals clear, and write them down, and then decide how you are going to get there. We're all different. I have a strict diet of healthy foods at home that I adhere to 85% of the time. Then when I'm at a restaurant, I order whatever I want and just go with portion control. So restaurant eating ais a special event for me. Altough...the longer I have the band, the less interesting food is. I never thought I'd say that!
  2. Thanks girls, u have put my mind at rest, I've binned the scales now. Can't be starting to evolve into a scales warrior lol. I have been on clear fluids, I'm vegetarian so broth wasn't on the menu. I was having weetabix with lots of milk, Water, marmite drink, Heinz Soups, decaff coffee, lolly ices. All in small amounts. I've gained 3 pound since I tried eating over 2 days. I don't actually know how much I should eat each meal, I'm kinda winging it. Today I'm going back to clear fluids and starting again. I'm not hungry so keeping hydrated is a good start x Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Vegetarian/Vegan RNY Oct. 2014 surgery

I was thinking of going vegetarian. Not sure how to get protein in with out animals , dairy products. Any input?
  4. Would like to know how many RNY'ers have decided to follow a plant based diet post op. How are you feeling, healing and how is your energy level. What are your go to foods in each phase? What is your surgeons advice if you have decided not to use animal Protein?

    Any vegetarian sleevers?

I did talk to her and via PM and she was very helpful. I think right now, I can eat so little that I don't have a choice about meat, but as my capacity increases, I may be able to add more vegetarian Protein sources. Honestly even now, of everything I ate yesterday, I got the most protein out of cottage cheese, yogurt and cheese anyway so it's kinda working.

told I can't be on a vegetarian diet.

I am a pre & post op vegetarian down 69 pounds in five months. I will admit that veganism might not be entirely do-able but as an ovo-lacto veggie I have no problems meeting my numbers daily with shakes, tofu, cottage cheese, nuts, seeds, soy, yogurt and seitan. I'm not really allowed beans, quinoa or chickpeas which were a source of protein prior too surgery. Nobody is gonna fault you for eating tofu in place of chicken as long as you meet your numbers.
  7. Ahh it makes sense then. My partner is vegetarian and he had protein shakes every morning to supplement his protein intake. I think I would too if I didn't eat meat (but I do lol)

told I can't be on a vegetarian diet.

I was raised a vegetarian and am quickly going back to that lifestyle. I much prefer the taste and have found my food to have more protein, less fat and calories than meat. Here is my nutritional breakdown from MFP for today. Not one bite of meat.

told I can't be on a vegetarian diet.

I can see it being hard if you are vegan but not vegetarian. Unless you are a "junk food" vegetarian and don't know how to prepare high protein meals or if you are a picky eater.

"I eat healthy"... but i'm still fat

I think there is confusion about 'healthy'. Whole foods are healthy, but eat too much of it and it's not healthy anymore. Vegetables are healthy, but eat your potatoes smothered in cheese sauce and I'm pretty sure you're on the road to high cholesterol. I agree that not allvegans/vegetarians eat healthy but you have to admire their ability to control what goes into their mouths - my boyfriend is vegetarian and his restraint amazes me. I think that is something I definitely aspire to. I think eating healthy emcompasses eating quality whole foods in moderate quantaties and doesn't just cover the type of food a person eats. And I agree with bayou's point that more people should take a good long look at what goes into their mouths, and b***h less about how the band didn't make them thin. My band is an amazing tool, but as I always say, it doesn't choose what I put in my mouth.

"I eat healthy"... but i'm still fat

I think if you eat too much of anything you can get fat - except maybe celery, it would be pretty hard to get fat off celery - but it is a lot easier to get fat eating a smaller amount of bad food than it is to get fat eating huge amounts of good food. There are loads of things that I love that arent necessarily bad when taken individually but when you add a cream sauce they become calorific, steak au poivre with asparagus, sweet potatoes and sauted baby carrots springs to mind....... I have to say as well that my step sister is a vegetarian and her love of cheese definitly, as she will admit, is reflected in her butt size
  12. I was wondering if being vegetarian can be an option for bansters?:help:

    Dumping question...

I haven't dumped except during the soft food stages when I was ok'd to eat Bariatric vegetarian chili. It was just this side of hell. Not something you want to go looking for. I have kind of poked at that bear a few times like tasting a bite of cake(it was gross btw) and it didn't do anything to me. I've had pasta sauce that was over my 4g of sugar limit given to me by my NUT and still no dumping. Not all people dump so you cannot count on that safety net. You have to just go knowing that it "may" be a possibility, but don't go poking for how much you can get away with before it happens. When I recognized my behavior I made changes so I don't go testing to see what I can get away with again. It's not very beneficial in the long haul to be trying to defeat or push the limits of our surgeries.
  14. Hey everyone! I was banded December 11th, I have gone from 230 to a VERY fluctuating 183-194. Depends on the day, the time, who knows anymore! It depresses the heck outta me, I can tell you that! I couldn't wait to hit 199, then 189........I get very depressed because since I lost weight so fast, I want it to continue. I've had 3 fills, this 3rd one kicked my butt! I can finally feel the restriction, but I also cannot eat very many things, and I usually throw up when eating. Needless to say, I don't think they'll be adding to my band April 29th. I'm tired of the few things I can eat, I'm upset because I'm not losing.......It feels like a dead end road right now and I know it shouldn't. I have plenty of time, but still. I'm doing the Body for Life workout program. Kicks my butt muscle wise, but I'm determined to shrink my skin too! Any suggestions on foods and such? That I can keep down?? I'm thinking of becoming a vegetarian. LOL

    Any Vegetarian Banders?

I to am a vegetarian. I was banded three weeks ago and am just starting to get on "solid foods". I agree with you, the thought of never eating asparagus was quite depressing as I love it. My doc said I could try it soon and see how I do. No issues with anything thus far. Chickpeas, veggie sloppy joe, veggie spaghetti sauce with spaghetti squash.... all did well. I will keep you posted.

    Any Vegetarian Banders?

Coo -- I am vegetarian and have been for about 15 years. I have had the band for 2 years and have found that it can be a learning experience to figure out what you can and cannot tolerate. I love love love green Beans, but can only eat them cooked to near-mush on a Tuesday when there is no clouds in the sky and in February. It can be somewhat frustrating at first when you are not sure and what went down fine one day gives you trouble for the next two weeks. I have found that when I find a period that I can eat green beans, I tend to eat them and only them for two days straight. By then, I am so sick of green beans that I don't want to eat them again for several months. Betsy -- I tried going vegan for about 6 months in the beginning but I am so picky that I got horribly sick. ITA with Wheetsin that the "hidden" animal products are really really surprising. Most of my Protein comes from dairy so I have a hard time when I cut those down.
  17. im trying to give up meat i have been mostly meat free for 2 weeks its not as hard as i thought..any recipes would be great i feel lighter and more regular..i hope i dont fall off the wagon with thanksgiving coming up

  19. Exactly! I've been vegetarian for 17 years & eat sugar, carby pastas, fat, & other things that have made me gain tons of weight! I got sleeved 2/6 & don't regret it. That was a silly comment. Thanks FallenAngel for addressing it! :-)

should I go on a diet

You have done so well. First, congratulations! Have you been keeping track of what goes in your mouth, journaling or something? This seems to help me, and at times I stop doing it and lose consciousness of what I'm really eating. Weight watchers is good for that. Others here are using weight watchers meetings or the online program and getting good results. I am resistant to "going on a diet" too... Perhaps if you look at it as a three month intensive workshop or something like that, to just tweak your habits... you might not fall back on a diet cycle. Good luck with that... Im only 2 1/2 weeks out, so not much experience with the sleeve yet, but loads with dieting! I am a vegetarian too, and hope I can pull off enough low carb eating to make this sleeve/tool work well.
  21. I am a pescatarian who is a little over two weeks away from surgery and feeling stressed about being able to maintain a vegetarian (or occasional pescatarian) lifestyle after. I found this board by googling "vegetarian after gastric sleeve" and I thank everyone who has posted advice and ideas here. I realize this board is old and that this message may not be seen, but it really helped alleviate some of my fears. I really want to transition to a whole foods vegetarian diet eventually. I hate that I am having to do products with Gelatin during the pre-op diet, but I can deal with two weeks and I feel more encouraged that it will be do-able to eat a mostly plant-based diet for the rest of my life!

    Forks over Knives

Look up how much protein is in Plants. It is a lot more than meat & milk, plus plant protein will not cause cancer. Remember where do animal's get protein? Yep PLANTS! The protein is not a problem. Ever meet anyone sick from not enough protein. They marketed this to get us to eat meat & milk. It worked. Somehow the rest of the world get there protein with no issues. Jack There are some very valid points you make. But if you look at the teeth of humans, we evolved to be omnivores. Animals have specialized teeth. Look at what cows and horses eat, and how they eat and chew. Humans have teeth for grinding up food but also for ripping and tearing flesh. Millions of years of evolution can't be wrong. I am not saying you are wrong, it is probably not a bad thing to reduce the amount of animal Proteins in our diet. But (I am not going to look this up) are there other benefits to a omnivore vs a herbivore diet that humans need such as certain amino acids, etc. that maybe a balanced plant based diet might not be able to replicate? This will probably light a fire under the backsides of some vegetarians. I am not criticizing your lifestyle, that is your choice. I just will remain an omnivore but maybe with less animal based protein.

    Chinese Soups

They have been great on the full liquid phase! I'm a vegetarian so I had veggie and bean curd soup and today I had seafood soup! The seafood soups is wonderful! It's a clear broth, but full of veggies and seafood! I think I'm going to purée the seafood and put it back in since I can handle cream soups just fine! Great protein I'm sure!! Oh it even has egg whites!

    Meat hurts

Early on, meat did NOT sit well in my sleeve, even when it was moist and shredded. I grew up vegetarian so vegetable Protein (TVP) was something I was already used to. I ordered some meat substitute products I was familiar with off of Amazon and found that they actually sat VERY well on my sleeve (Loma Linda canned products). Now everything but steak sits pretty well, but some days my sleeve is being a little tetchy and I'll still break out a Loma Linda Big Frank instead because I know it will be well tolerated. Play around with different protein sources and find out what your sleeve likes.
  25. Chickie - I read somewhere on another thread you went vegetarian. You mind saying when/at what point being banded did you go that route? Do you do dairy / fish? I must say not being here all that long that I really love you and Jaquis' view on food and exercise. I'm not sure if it's a "twist" on Western Doc vs those Down Under - but my husband just got back from Aust/NZ on business an ran into a collegaue who is banded as is he....DH was like they think of food as fuel....Dieting is not a word used, but healthy eating & exercise is SO prevalent. I love your take on the process -
