Moving to Ontario..research starting over HELP!
momtofourredheads posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi there, I have been looking into getting the LAP-BAND®. Several of my friends have it and have been very successful. They all got it done in Mexico and have no troubles finding fill doctors here in Vancouver. I was about to go that route, when my husband found out we are suddenly being relocated to Ontario (Waterloo area). I am frustrated to have to restart the research for a new area. I have read that it is hard to find a fill Dr. in Ontario, so I am thinking of forking out the $$ and going to a clinic in the area. So far I have emailed CIBO, SWLC and Slimband. I am interested in hearing opinions and experiences with these clinics from those who have been there. Do any of them have fill centres near or around the waterloo area? I received friendly and prompt replies from CIBO and SWLC but I received annoying, argumentative replies from Slimband...outright refusing to give me info via email...and I am so not a phone person, I have four small children, my life is crazy busy right now with trying to move across the country, I don't have time to have a phone consultation with someone when all I want to know is the cost of the procedure and what was included. Those are admin questions and none of the other clinics had an issue answering them for me. The woman was so rude and argumentative in her emails... if they are this inflexible at the research part of the journey...I can't imagine how inflexible they will be after they have my money. I am ready to strike them off the list already. I am looking for some feedback and help from people who have had this procedure done in the area. Thanks so much and sorry for the huge, long post!!! -
Anyone from Saskatchewan?
Living My Dream replied to CanadaGirl27's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi I live in Ontario. My husband and I both have lapbands and went to Toronto, Slimband clinic. Our daughter is in northern Saskatchewan and is just looking into lapband surgery and must travel to Regina. Is that where you had surgery? When did you have lapband surgery? Lynda -

Slimband formerly TLBC Clinic Toronto On
HD Gloria replied to susieq321's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Heather - I'm not a Slimband patient - had my surgery in Sarnia two years ago. But I'm interested in people's experiences and challenges. I had the surgery in March 2008 and had problems right from the beginning. The band never did work properly and it took two years before they finally removed it - as I was so dehydrated I was put on IV. I don't know whether to consider it again. the clinic wants another $3500 after I already paid $15000. I also want to know how the band feels when it's working - what's the full feeling like, same as without? - what else about the band make sit work? what else do you feel? what else happens? Thanks to anyone with comments. Gloria -

Day 1 of the start of my new life: So today is day 1 of my pre-op diet... I'm wondering how I will be able to live on yogurt and still stay sane for the next 10 days! I decided to get a slimband, because my mom has a LAP-BAND® and has seen great sucess (I think she has lost about 70Ibs, and has been able to maintain it for the last 3 years), also because I want to be in control of my life, and because of my family's medical history. I keep having these "what am I doing" and "isn't this a little extreme" thoughts, but at the same time I'm really excited about it (I can't wait to be able to control my eating!). I was so excited about it one day that I told 3 of my co-workers, 2 of them were like ok, whatever... and one of them is now watching me like a hawk, great:unsure:. Most people have been supportive, my mom, my husband, a few close friends. So far the journey with slimband has been a fairly smooth one, and the folks there have been awesome. Good Luck to everyone!

I'm in Toronto so getting it done at Slimband. 15 and 13 - perfect age for boarding school LOL my daughter is 4 1/2 acts sometimes 2 and sometimes 40 - my mornings were rough - afternoons and evenings i loved being pregnant. dh makes fun of me sometimes because i spent a lot of time on the cold bathroom floor kinda like when i was in my early 20's minus the parting the night before HAHAHAHA

I have to pay out of pocket. Actually I'm using my mom's line of credit... that way you can technically pay up front (slimband sometimes has promos which help with the cost of travelling, but you have to pay up front) and then you can take your time paying it off. Lapband suggested looking at what your bank can do for you, I guess if you get financing through the clinic you might end up paying a higher interest rate. Kinda sucks that most provinces won't cover it... Good luck to you.

I don't believe Slimband uses the Allergan Lap-band but you would have to ask them to be positive. They were using other bands at one time.
-
ohhhhh - ok - so it's the lapband that is given to those going through Slimband?
-
Lap-band is the trademarked name of the Allergan band. Slimband is the name of a clinic.

the Lap Band and Slim Band here in Toronto? I dont' see anyone talking about the Slimband but are they the same just different name?

just a mini update. got a call from Slimband saying that all was set and I will be getting my preop package soon. I asked if it could be rushed since we're going away all of July and I'd only have a few days to get the blood work done and anything else they needed. she said she'd see what she could do to get it to me before we leave.

After having a Health scare, and also seeing how Lap-Banding has help friends of mine ~I am seriously considering doing this. I have have talk with the SlimBand people in Toronto, and I will an interview tommorrow with CIBO also located in Toronto. I am from Northern Ontario and I am wondering about being able to have the fills done in Sudbury. I am nervous about the fact that this will be a total life syle change forever~ I have the support of my Husband of 35 years, When thinking about this I guess "Food will be to survive NOT socialize!". I am 54 and I want to be a regular size again which I haven't been for 20 years!! Should I or Shouldn't I? What to DO!!!

Welcome Kurby. Is the Slimband the same as a Lapband? Do they call it something different in Canada? For me it was the best decision I ever made, just wish I could've done it when I was as young as you. I've wasted many years being miserable about my weight. Janet, the vacation sounds wonderful. I've never done an all inclusive before, I am partial to cruises, but then again how can I be partial if I have no experience with the other so might just have to do one sometime. I hear they are wonderful. I wish I was part of your family! Joyce, what is a yoga retreat? Eva, sorry you have to do your sister's errands. Treat yourself to something special while you are out. Julie, welcome back, I missed ya, you left as I came back. Hope your pain is getting better. My mom has been having horrible pain issues they think due to a bulged disk or something and is starting epidural shots on Tues.

thanks for welcoming me. i'll start with a little bio I was 25 and went to the dr for what i thought was a routine check up. My regular dr was taking a year off for family so I had a stand in. She did some tests and wanted me to do more. I had been having some problems with my AF over the past year which was very unusual since you could set your clock by my 28 day 8am wake up call. When all was said and done this dr informed me that not only did i have PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) but would probably never have children. This started me down the deep dark depression (3d's) path. For over 5 years I maintained a somewhat social life with my friends but never really wanted a relationship with anyone. I met Patrick in 2002 and when we got married in 2004 I was 100lbs over my early 20's weight. i was somewhat ok with it because i was quite thin in my early 20's but i was hoping to lose some. After the wedding we had made an appointment with a fertility specialist to see exactly what the problem was and if it could be fixed. Well apparently it could be fixed because 1 month later I was pregnant with Cassandra. i lost 30lbs then gained 75lbs and It's been 4 1/2 years since having Cassie and I haven't lost a single pound. In fact I've gained another 15lbs since last year. So.................... Recently I've decided to go for the very expensive Slimband/Lapband surgery. It's a huge step and not an easy out by any means. After years and years of diets that fail I just don't have the energy anymore to get motivated. I want to be healthy for my daughter and if possible have another child which just isn't happening at this weight. My goal. To lose 140lbs. I will say that at 5'8" I will look great if I lose the 140lbs. I've called the slimband clinic and scheduled an August 12th appointment. We are going away for the entire month of July so August is the earliest I can do this. And that's me in a nut shell - some days it's the nut house ok most days it's the nut house.

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to this site. Just got my surgery date from August 12 and looking for a buddy. how does this all work? is it an online thing or do people buddy up with others in their city so they can meet in person? I live in Toronto and don't expect too many Canadians on an American site but it would be great to buddy up with someone else in Toronto. I'm 42, married, mother of a very energetic 4 1/2 year old girl, looking to lose about 150lbs with help from the Slimband.

i know how you feel. i've known about the slimband for about 2 years and thought and thought and thought about it. kept putting it off because of the cost but my mom happened to mention a commercial she saw a few weeks ago and that's all it took. within 2 weeks i had already had my first meeting to find out all the ins and outs, paid the deposit and book my appointment. it's amazing how just a simple bump starts things rolling. i think the timing is right in other ways too because dh and i have been trying for 4 years to get pg again and have a second child. i think my weight has played a huge part in not conceiving so maybe in a year or so i can report that we're expecting our second child.

and what should be in it? i've been reading some posts that say get a contract from Slimband that states that Dr Yau is the one doing the surgery. but what else should it say?
-
I'm booked in for my Slimband on August 12 at 11am i think i'm going to be sick. i hate change - at least instant ones but i know this is whats best for me. i'll be nervous as anything the week before and scared to death the day of but i do know i'll be fine. it's going to be a long 2 months until my surgery date but at least i'll be on vacation the entire month of july to keep my mind off it.
