    Protein HELP/SUGGESTIONS

I'm 3 weeks out and I've been hitting my 65-75g/day Protein goal without ANY Protein shake. Very excited because I was so sick of them! Here are my suggestions. Protein first, extras later. This means crackers probably aren't helping you. If I eat a string cheese by itself (1oz) that's 8 grams right there. I am trying to focus on the chicken, beef, ham/pork, shrimp, fish, etc. I only eat fruits and veggies if I finish my protein source first and can fit a little more. With the exception of edamame which I do eat a little more of, but at least it has some protein. Meatless soy vegetarian products are super high in protein. The Morningstar Farms brand is delicious. 1 'sausage patty' has 10grams of protein. Top with a little cheese or even egg for even more. I bought the "chick'n nuggets" also and 1 nugget has 3grams. I can eat 2 nuggets plus 1/2 a string cheese (about 2.5 ounces) for a total of 10grams in a meal. Add unflavored Protein Powder into foods it will mix well with... yogurt, pudding, oatmeal, cottage cheese, anything soft. I actually have not been doing this to get my protein goal though, I've been getting enough from the foods. Tuna is one of the highest protein options so if you like tuna, make up different tuna salad recipes. Again though, I don't eat it on crackers or bread, just alone so I get all protein. This is a big adjustment for me as a total carb lover, but it's not as bad as I would have thought  Also shrimp has great protein too. A few cold cooked shrimp and some cocktail sauce makes a quick easy meal (shrimp cocktail) high in protein. I ate 2 ounces and the bag said that was 14grams. Then there are always Protein Bars. I still haven't eaten one of them yet either but I just bought some yesterday that my doc recommended. They are from costco and they are called Premier Protein bars. They come in a variety pack with 3 flavors. Choc Peanut Butter, yogurt and nut, double fudge. One bar has 30grams!!!! It's chewy, not hard, so it's okay to eat in these stages. I haven't tried one yet... it says one bar is 2.5 ounces... but even though I eat that amount in other foods, I have a feeling it is so dense I would have to split it into two sittings. But 30 grams!!! That could really boost your day!! I could see possibly even cutting it into 6 pieces and having one piece as "dessert" at each of 6 mini meals throughout the day to help spread the protein around. I hope these options help.
  2. I've been thinking a lot about what my doctor and his staff have told me and I have decided there are going to have to be times to make up my own rules/plan as I go along. This is my first lightbulb moment since surgery. So here is the plan: One of the things I heard from the nurse today at my first visit (since the doctor went out of town) is that I can't have the food I love because Protein is more important. Ok, but i'm a vegetarian, and I wasn't eating protein before because I wasn't finding a lot of ways to get protein. No meat, chicken or fish for me thanks. But if I have Protein powder, and I need to use it anyways, why not put it on the food I love to eat and knock both things out at once? It doesn't always have to be eggs and Gelatin free yogart. So thats my plan. I will eat my good food, and of course watch the calories and carbs ect. while I eat the foods I love. So thats my plan. I'm sure it doesn't sound the best to a lot of people but it is making sense in my head.
  3. So sorry you are feeling bad! Have you tried something different with your diet? At 5 months post-op I think your sleeve would be able to handle a bit of spices? I used to eat non-vegetarian food during my childhood, but for the past 12 years I have been a vegetarian/eggetarian (though I had some chicken 2 years ago when I was in US). I have now started taking fish(salmon). I feel that a bit of spices enhance the flavor and help me eat the fish without feeling nauseous. Sorry - not sure how much of help this is. But I hope you start feeling better soon!

That's scary. I hope I can eat veggies later. I love them. I was planning on mushing them until real food on Jan 8. I was a vegetarian for 13 years and had friend who were veg but hated veggies. Here are some ideas for you: V8 (they make it in fruit fusion now if you don't like the tomato version) pea, squash or carrot soup (very creamy and yummy) Add them to everything! Get a slap chop (or similar) and chop a little green onion, colorful peppers, tomatoes etc) very very small. Keep the chop mix in the fridge. You can sprinkle the mix in eggs, soups, tuna or chicken salads (try grapes in your chicken salad!) Mash veggies that you might not normally think of mashing: sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots (with splenda brown yum), smashed peeled eggplant (top with canned tomatoes and a little parmesean to make a light italian- style casserole) Choose fresh over dried over frozen over canned for more nutrition bang for the buck. If you can tolerate breads, use whole-wheat flour and bake a homemade banana or zuccini bread (easy). Get baby-food veggies and add them to other dishes---baby squash in curry dishes, baby vegs in any soup, baby fruit and yogurt in hot cereal. You can get in an extra serving and won't even notice they are there. Make oatmeal with apple juice instead of water. It is good and I hate oatmeal. Add lemon to your water and orange or lemon or grapefruit to your tea. Avocados are amazing and you can use them in many ways: guacamole, in a dressing with greek yogurt to top chicken or fish, atop refried beans, on veggie burgers, to add a creamy texture to soups Try tomatoes and s/p with cottage cheese Smoothies! (yogurt, frozen fruit, milk, blender) (My favorite smoothie in the world is banana/blueberry) Yoiu can add your protein powder and other packaged nutrients to these. Try juicing. Buy a juicer with a money-back guarantee in case you don't like it, you can send it back.
  5. I am six weeks post op--I've been on solid food for the last week and I usually eat the same thing most days: (I'm a vegetarian also) cream of wheat or heritage cold Cereal for Breakfast, if I go out to breakfast--two poached eggs and a slice of toast lunch is usually an eng. muffin with some melted cheese and sliced tomato or cottage cheese or left overs from dinner. dinner is a mexican style casserole, or stir fry with tofu, or something with lentils, or spaghetti with marinara, or a baked potato with steamed veggies and a salad. I eat the same as I did before but MUCH MUCH less and I don't eat a lot after dinner which is something I used to do. I snack on yogurt, fat free pops, a Protein shake if I haven't gotten enough protein for the day, some crackers with Peanut Butter, a string cheese, or fruit. I usually avg. about 60 grams of protein a day, about 1,200 calories. I've lost ten pounds since my surgery almost six weeks ago. When I go out I eat carefully--I've had pizza and was fine with it. I may be getting a fill tomorrow so all of the above may change. I haven't had much restriction yet. I didn't think I'd be able to eat what I used to but so far I am and I feel fine, I've never thrown up or choked on anything. But again, after a fill, all that may change. Hope this helps you.
  6. I feel ya! I'm starting to want food I didn't even like before the surgery. I'm a vegetarian and KFC looks and smells soooo good now. I'm living on yogurt, cottage cheese, fake meat, and vegetarian chili. I'm 1 month out and I drool over everything!
  7. I am scheduled for my bypass on 2/17. I am looking for other vegans to help me. I am currently a vegetarian but want to make the jump to veganism when I have the surgery. Anyone know of any support groups or individuals willing to help? Thanks.

    Pre Op Diet

Im on day 2 of my Pre op diet and ended up in a position where I was out with none of my liquid meals. We ended up at Panera as I wasn't driving. I tried to make the best choice and got the low fat vegetarian black bean soup. I didn't eat all of it and I still have 12 days till surgery. How bad did I screw up? I see my surgery nurse on Friday and will fess up but right now I feel horrible.
  9. I am having my sleeve operation tomorrow and I for the past 11 years I have not eaten meat. I eat dairy and eggs. Any vego out there give me an idea on post op first 4 weeeks please. Thanks

Congrats on your band! As fas as my experience I have never had the band get in the way of anything. I've done yoga, pilates and various other forms of exercise/activites and have never felt it or found it got in the way of something. You really can't overeat unless it's food that goes down easy like ice cream or chocolate but again that is my experience. I think everyones is a little different. My biggest problem is remembering to chew my food completely and taking smaller bites. I still have problems with what foods I can and can't eat. I think if I could live as a vegan or vegetarian food would be a little easier to eat. However I do like meat but have a problem eating certain cuts depending on how they are cooked. There will be a learning curve but you'll get used to it and figure out what is best for you. Best of luck!
  11. My doctor starts his patients on a 30 day course of colace from day 1 in the hospital. I had my first BM on day 5 post op. It was small and harder than normal, but it was to be expected. I did not have a pre-op liquid diet, just the usual NPO the day of surgery. My first food stage was Full Liquids, so mostly shakes, tea, broth. After my initial BM I managed to have 1 every day since. By 6 weeks out they were pretty much back to normal but only once a day. Now I go anywhere from 1 -3 times a day, but on avg twice a day. I am vegetarian so my diet is naturally high Fiber. During the Full Liquids stage I would add spinach to my Protein shakes. I was also eating Soup made from Beans pureed, strained and thinned with vegetable broth. I've never been constipated or had diarrhea.
  12. Hi everyone! So I'm 12 days out and I feel completely lost. I'm a vegetarian and I feel like I really don't know what to eat to get a lot of Proteins since I'm in the soft foods stage. I'm leaving full liquids slowly and I really feel like I can eat about anything. Nothing makes me hurt or super uncomfortable. eggs and yogourts are passing less easily but cheese is passing just fine along with paneer cheese, brie, cheese spreads etc. I can eat mashed potatoes and canned vegetables without a fuss from my stomach. Is this normal??? When and should I start eating fake meats or TVP? They are so high in Protein yet low-fat, low-carb... When can I start eating mashed Beans, lentils and so on? I need my tofu back LOL! Any good soft foods recipes? Thank you!!! Hope to meet more bariatric vegetarians!
  13. I'll have to try that. It would be nice to eat a "normal meal" again. It still amazes me at how little I can eat to feel satisfied, compared to what I used to eat. I am eating some stir-fried tofu right now. It's pretty tasty with all of the seasonings. Normally I wouldn't touch tofu, but it makes a nice meal. I've basically been a vegetarian since surgery!
  14. I was sleeved on 6/14 and I have tried vegetarian hamburgers and meatballs because they are high in protein. Also premier protein has a new Carmel flavor and I like it in my decaffeinated coffee as a creamer and sweetner. I also drink skim milk, eat lean deli meat chipped, cottage cheese and Greek yogurt.

    vegetarians and vegans

I also wasn't vegetarian before banding. After meat being impossible to eat because I can't keep it down I developed a huge dislike for it. I love the vegetation lifestyle.

For my protein sources, I turn to beans (kidney, garbanzo, refried), hummous, lentils, loads of fish, yogurt, milk or soy milk (although I think soy milk has fewer grams of protein vs. cow's milk). I'll have some peanut butter from time to time but it's a trigger food for me. I use toasted sliced almonds on my salads, and add some cubed cheese, too. I wasn't a vegetarian to begin with but gave up meat when I got banded.

    Help on Mushy stage!!!!

During the mushy phase, I lived on three staple items: (1) Annie's Organic O's with soy meatballs (a vegetarian alternative to traditional Spaghetti O's with beef meatballs); and (2) Baked sweet potatoes with Smart Balance 'butter' (3) Steamed/mashed cheesy cauliflower prepared with Campbell's Cheddar cheese soup.
  19. Hi everyone! I'll be 5 years out in November. The day of surgery I weighed 351 and I am maintaining at 141. I'm 5'8. I also stopped taking my Vitamins about a year ago but my lab works comes back perfect. I was giving myself B-12 injections but had to stop because my Vitamin B was too high. I do take calcium once in a while. I'm a vegetarian so getting my Protein in is a struggle. I'm a super picky vegetarian About a year ago I was diagnosed with Graves' disease but I don't think it has anything to do with the surgery. Other than that, this surgery was the best thing I ever did. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Vegetarian?

Well I'm one month post op today and so far 90% of the meat I have eaten has come back up. So seriously thinking of being a vegetarian. Right now it doesn't even sound good to think about meat. However, the sucky sweet protein drinks sound gross to????

    Vegetarian?

@@B-52, I can understand the issues with chicken. I'm the same way in that, if it's not prepared just right, it's not going down. I can eat beef and pork as long as it's not overcooked. However, since having my band, I've totally changed my lifestyle and eating habits and, as part of that, have avoided eating those meats simply because they're not very healthy. And now that I've stayed away from them for so long, I find I just don't like them anymore. And I don't care for chicken either. This is why I'm considering a vegetarian lifestyle. I just don't see any point in forcing myself to eat foods I don't like anymore, ya know? I did talk to my surgeon about it. He said he wouldn't recommend it for everyone and he thinks it will be difficult for me to get enough protein but told me if I wanted to give it a try that he would be supportive as long as I make sure I get at least 60 grams of protein a day. I think I can do that easily. I can add quinoa to my diet. I can also add chia seeds, which are high in protein and can be added to oatmeal, yogurt, salads, etc. There are high protein milk varieties now that are ultra filtered, like Fairlife, which has 13 grams per 1 cup serving. I can use that to make my protein shakes and I'm more than halfway to my 60 grams without even eating anything. Then of course there's cheese, cottage cheese, peanut butter, nuts, beans. Right now, what I've decided to do is is to completely give up all red meat and pork for a few months and see how that goes. Once I get through the next few months without those, as long as I'm doing okay with getting my protein in and not feeling like I'm missing out, I'll cut out chicken and eventually I may cut out fish. I'm ok with keeping the milk products, eggs, and cheese in my diet though so that makes things easier.

    What Is....

I'm with you...I'm a veggie lover, and definitely not a natural meat eater. Sometimes I just eat salad for lunch, sometimes I eat vegetarian meals. I track my protein intake, and if I have salad, I might have an extra protein drink to increase my protein that way. As far as being balanced, it does balance out...I'm still getting veg, and protein, just less of each. But there's no way I could get all my nutritional needs met through food alone; I simply don't take in enough calories. That's why vitamins are so important. We have to take them for life.
  23. I'm on Atkin's pre-op, which I hate. I'm a vegetarian and I'm finding it 1) really difficult to find good low carb/high protein food options, and ineffective because I'm at a higher carb level, ketosis never sets in so I never get that really full feeling one gets with Atkins. I talked to the nutritionist today and she said that I was small enough (BMI 40) that I didn't really need a pre-op diet, but I think I'd rather have a healthy liver. So I'm thinking about going on a liquid diet for the next 7 days. I don't do well with diets (obviously) because of my monster appetite. Liquid diet is almost like a form of abstinence. Nutrition without eating. Have any of you actually gone on a liquid pre-op diet just because it felt right, rather than it being required? I'd appreciate any advice about this.
  24. OMG! Could you open your second franchise here?? The closest restaurant to me has one pound hamburgers as its staple item. There are no healthy places around here. There used to be a vegetarian cafe but it didn't fly. The healthiest thing around here are Wendy's salads and they are a long way from what I need to eat now. Maybe I can be your first franchisee!:wink0:

Are there any veg*n's ou there?

Im also a vegetarian (although I do eat fish sometimes). Basically I have a lap band cookbook and I have a bunch of recipes that I like. For the ones that call for meats, I just substitute tofu (and there are so many different kinds of tofu...you can vary it a little). Im only about a week postop so Im not eating eggs or firm tofu but I plan to just cook all the different recipes incorporating a meat substitute. Plus 1-2 protein shakes a day. Should be fine, and varying the recipes will keep it interesting!
