Well I'm back to eating and I too have put on a couple of lbs. It's not much considering but it is a gain, not a loss! I rang to book another fill and was given the option of 20 August or 3 September. I took 20 August first then called back and asked for 3 September. Now I'm regretting it because I'm noticing I can eat more than I should. I discovered on the weekend that I have no problem eating potato crisps and chocolate!! I can eat bread but it seems to be get stuck so I thought maybe I have some restriction but need to watch what I eat. Anyway, good luck with your fill, let us know how you go.

Fill yesterday... tight due to swelling?
JMinDallas replied to pixiestix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes, you're still swollen. If you can't keep things down, then you should get a slight unfill. If you're able to keep fluids down, ride it out and it gets looser as the swelling goes down. I just had another slight fill 3 hrs ago. I'm drinking a Protein shake, and it's taken about 30 mins and I'm still not quite done with it. -
Sorry you are feeling let down. However I am sure that the surgeon has your best interests at heart. Surgery is dangerous and the higher your BMI the more dangerous it is . A BMI of 68 is extremely high.Far better to lose the weight prior to surgery than to die from complications on the table. It is also normal in the US to have to undergo a 6 month supervised diet prior to undergoing surgery . This proves to the insurance company that you are serious and have tried your best and are not just looking for a quick fix. you are not the first person i have heard of that has to do a 4 week preop diet. The purpose of this part of the process is to help shrink the liver. When you are obese the liver is enlarged and fatty. If it is not reduced in size prior to surgery you run the risk of having to have open as opposed to laparoscopic surgery or of it getting damaged during surgery which is highly dangerous. If your Dr suggested a bypass you need to find out why do not just dismiss his suggestion out of hand.Yes there are some Dr's that push bypass because it is their preferred surgery but your Dr may feel that a band would not suit you. With weight loss surgery there is no one size fits all - different surgeries suit different people depending on their types of eating.Bands are generally recommended for people that eat large quantities but do not have as much of an issue with sweets. bypasses are recommended where it is felt that malabsorption is also required. There is another option - the sleeve.I have even heard of people having a bypass and a band combined. Price should not be your deciding factor when choosing a surgeon. I understand that it is important but it is more important to choose an experienced surgeon that has done lots of the procedure that you choose and that has a good track record. Their are countless horror stories of things going wrong when using a cheap or inexperienced surgeon. That is not to say that all surgeons offering cheap surgery are bad but you do need to be careful. This board is a great place for you to vent, get support and do research.Read some of the threads from people that had revisions from lapband to bypass to help you with your decision as well. Wishing you all the best.

Hello all> I was banded in November and have been doing ok with my diet. Was being REALLY good with avoiding the heavy carbs like bread, rice, pasta, and cereal but still picking at sweets and sugars in fruits. Down 100 pounds feeling good, then I went on vacation and it all went to hell. I knew I was not going to be sticking to my diet guidelines while on vacation but I planned for it and tried to bring alternatives. I ate the fruit and protein bars I brought plus the other crap that was available on vacation: mashed potatoes, bagel!! ice cream, even pizza etc. SUGAR,carbs and more sugar and carbs. Now i am craving carbs and sweets- in carb withdrawal, trying to be good but I have been fighting it all month and everytime I give in its like starting all over again. Have only lost about 3 pounds this month and I know its because of all the crap I ate. What have you guys found to help handle the carb cravings? I want to get through one entire month without cheating!!

Does your surgeon allow JellO or anything? If not maybe ask what kind of foods you can add in to keep you from being so hungry? The protein shakes will keep you full for awhile but definitely not for too long! I'd call and ask for suggestions as to what you can safely eat. In the end, keep your head up and keep pushing! These few weeks will seem like a breeze once they're over with.

I didn't really try to conceal it; a lot of people I work with know that I had some sort of surgery, others I just told them I was doing a detox (LOL). But, it was definitely hard to eat soup/mushed stuff for weeks when everyone else was enjoying pizza. We had 2 office parties during that time and it was SO hard. As for the protein shakes I'd make them at home and bring them along with me. I also bought the ones that are pre-made which made things a lot easier. I never got weird looks drinking protein shakes; seems a lot of people around here bring them in for snacks, etc.

Thank ya'll so much. . . I found out that my husband called his mom for Mother's day, and admitted that is extremely worried about me. He can't come home mid-tour for the surgery, plus, I think it would be too hard for me to say 'bye' again. Any ideas on how I can reassure him that I am going to be fine. His mom is coming down to stay with me for 2 weeks during the recovery time. . . If he could be home, he would be. Unfortunately, it just isn't an option for him.

I just had my LAP-BAND® surgery yesterday. I chose to go on a longer liquid diet, because I was not sure when I was to get the surgery and I wanted to make sure when I got the call that I was on my way and would not have to wait because of the liquid diet. I was on it for 4 weeks. I bought the whey protein mix from Wal-mart. Make sure it has 20 grams of protein, and very little fat or carbs. It cost about $14.00 for a large container. I mixed strawberries with mine. I had 2 protein shakes a day, and 1 meal consisting of baked turkey or chicken breast. 1/2 apple sliced up and some greens. (spinach is the best). I lost almost 20 lbs, and I did cheat 1 day. After a while I really did enjoy my little meal. I found that the taste of all the items together was good. I was never hungry. If I did get a little hungry, then I would eat a small amount of beef jerky (about 1/2 of a piece only). To play it safe, just take the small amount with you, but DO NOT TAKE THE WHOLE PACKAGE. From experience, it is easier if you do not see the package. Always eat very slow! And chew, chew, chew. Hope this will help you. In the end, it is worth it!!! This is what I did, but you might want to check with your doctor first. I know the diet is to decrease the size of your liver. To keep it out of the way when the doctor does the LAP-BAND® surgery. Hope this helps some.

I have a 9cc Realize Band, and I had to have filled past the point of 9cc to get good restriction. I was a grazer, not an emotional eater, and I am able to distinguish between head hunger and actual hunger pretty well. Not saying that I don't have head hunger, but I recognize it for what it is. I'm not sure how often it happens with the Lap Band, but there are several Realize Band patients that need more than the 9cc to get good restriction, so I wouldn't necessarily chalk up your hunger to head hunger (or emotional eating) so fast. My doctor does a pressure fill measurement to Realize Band patients who are having trouble finding good restriction, rather than only relying on the saline measurement. Once I had good restriction, I was able to eliminate the grazing, because I was no longer hungry between meals. I eat 1/2 cup solid meals three times/day, one healthy snack, a Protein shake in the early a.m. on the morning I'm heading to the gym before the sun comes up, and lots of liquids in between meals. My weight is coming off at a snail's pace now that I'm getting close to goal, but my clothes are still getting loser and I'm able to move my belts down a notch ever so often, so I know I'm still losing fat. If you're still able to eat good healthy meals, and aren't pb'ing, having reflux, or other signs of being too filled, I'd go in for more adjustments before contemplating revision surgery.

I am looking for Protein shakes for my 2 week pre-op diet. I am thinking about the EAS Myoplex Lite. Does anyone else have any suggestions about what they like?
-
After reading here for a while and doing my own pre-op, I've discovered that everyone has totally different opinons when it comes to Protein. I personally like BSN Lean Dessert Protein, Premier RTD, and Muscle Milk Light RTD. I HATED HATED HATED the Isopure. Myoplex RTD was ok. Amy

Why have you not gotten a fill and gotten so far from the "lap band way"? I am just wondering because I do fall off the wagon sometimes and it is hard to get back up! Have you heard of the 5 day pouch test? When I really need to get myself straightened up I use this diet. I don't really recall all of the specifics of it except for the first 2 days you can only have soft protein stuff like liquids and puddings and stuff like that. It is hard to follow but your pouch will hopefully shrink a bit plus it helps get all the cravings for bad stuff out of your system. That is where I would start. Go to google and type in 5 day pouch test. It will give you the web site that tells you exactly how to do it. Godd luck, and please let me know how you do.

do you weigh or measure your food?
BetsyB replied to Takingmylifeback's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Both. Solid protein, I weigh, and eat between 2-4 oz. Veggies, I measure by volume. -
I hate putting powdered protein in the blender because it gets so FROTHY!!! I HATE IT!!! I typically use premixed shakes in my blender when I am adding fruit or other things, but they are so expensive. Any suggestions?

Delicious low carb homemade pizza!
isaviolinist replied to MellieW's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hey guys - just thought I'd contribute to the pizza thread! I just made pizza with tortillas and it was amazing! I found a low carb tortilla (60 calories, 11 carbs, 7.5g Fiber, 6g Protein and made with soy flour and oats - its a decent sized tortilla too! Here is the brand if anyone is interested: Tumaro's Gourmet Tortillas - Low Carb Tortillas, Healthy Flour Tortillas and Wraps, Organic Tortillas, Flavored Tortillas, food Service Tortillas, Soy-Full Heart Flatbread Tortillas the one I used is the garden veggie kind), an organic roasted veggie tomato sauce at whole foods with 35 calories per 1/2 cup (I can't remember now but I think it was the 365 brand you find at WF's), and skim mozzarella cheese (70 calories for 1/4 cup). I sprayed the tortilla lightly with olive oil cooking spray, used 1/2 cup of sauce, used a little under 1/2 cup of cheese (I tried to just use one quarter cup but I love cheese!), and popped it in the oven until the cheese was melted and the edges of the tortilla were browned. OMG SO YUMMY! I was able to eat about 4/5 or so (although I could've stopped at 3/4). For the entire pizza it was 225 calories! So if you split it with someone its only 113 calories for half and SO tasty! I just checked through ALL the sauces until I found the most low cal one (which was delicious!) and went through all of the tortilla's too, and Ill be sticking to that Tumaros tortilla because it really was delicious! If you rummage through all of the sauce and tortilla options (sometimes there are TONS - especially with the sauces), you can maximize taste while still reducing calories. -
I made a low carb/high Protein personal pizza tonight using Flatout Light Original Flat Bread and it was so good I had to share! This is definitely a new favorite. I used; 1/4 cup of Ragu Homemade Style pizza sauce 1/4 cup of crumbled Feta cheese 17 pieces of Hormel Turkey Pepperoni 2 tbsp chopped onion 42g fresh sliced white mushrooms 1/4c of diced red and orange peppers 4 low fat Mozzarella slices Serving size~ whole pizza! *If you can eat it all. It's not very big but even with an empty band I wasn't able to finish the last couple bites.* Calories~ 530 Carbs~ 26 grams Fat~ 28 grams Protein~ 50 grams(!) Enjoy! ETA; This was my first non-mushy meal after surgery. =)

I have not had a fill yet so I have battle some hunger everyday. I rely on my calorie tracker to keep me honest and when I am hungry I eat! So far for 6 wks I have made good choices when hungry. I eat a protein snack like meat or cheese or dairy. Caramel corn rice cakes have become my new "sweet." a few cocoa roast almonds really help too. Try to find and keep on hand those things to eat that are food for you.

We need to be mindful of fat only because it is the most calorie dense food. However, some of the more essential Vitamins are only in fats. In the qieche 5 grams of saturated fat per serving is really very low. For example a 4 oz slice of Bon Appetit pound cake shown above has 430 calories and 24 grams of fat, 49 grams of carbs and only 7 grams of protein. Notice that the calories and the fat are more than double the values for the same weight of quiche and it has more than 5 times the carbs. ( I showed that because I love those things) The choice of low fat swiss cheese helps keep it that way. This particular quiche was really good and even though it has onion and shallot and garlic those ingredients do not overwhelm the meal. The mushrooms can be white button or the more flavorful portabello's the choice makes no difference in the nutritional values. I made this when I got home from visiting my daughter and added the bacon, just cause I like it . Once you can eat solids again I am sure you will enjoy it.

Thanks for all the info! I used to make quiches all the time when I did low carb before. I see alot of people mentioning fat... which is why I wondered if people who are banded follow the old school low carb way or if it's some new version..cuz from what I know of low carb/high protein.. fat content really wasn't an issue but I see people mentioning it.. is it because of what the docs told them, their own choice, or this is the low carb way they are talking about?

I actually think you need to switch your calorie budget around. If you are having 1 cup of milk with your two cups of coffe that's 100 cal. right there. Your Protein shake depending on the powder could be about 400 calories (powder 250, milk 50, yoghurt. As for lunch two slices of cheese is about 200 cal and 16 g of fat. I would eat more chicken (3 oz) add veggies and skip the blue cheese dipping sauce. I really like laughing cow cheese only 35 cal maybe 5 g fat. Personally I don't keep dessert in my house. You mentioned not having it every day; but does that mean 1 day a week or 6? I would leave dessert for special occations or parties. I used to make No Pudge brownies but would eat the dough raw. My problem was I would make 2-3 servings worth one after the other so even though it was a healthier dessert it was more than I should be eating.

Okay Here is a previous post: Today is Sunday Feb. 6, 2011, .1:00 pm I am down to 236.5 down 12.5 from 249 as of Jan 15, 2011. So excited. out of the 40's. This morning I had oatmeal with 1/2 tsp. of butter. coffee (lots) with hazelnut creamer sprinkled with cinnamon. I have prob. 32 oz. of Water with peach tea flavoring so far. At 2:00 i will have a Jillian whey Choc. Protein shake with 1 cup of ice, 1/2 banana, 2 tbsp. of p.nut butter, 1 scoop of Protein powder, 1/2 cup 1% milk and 1 cup of water. Put into my bullet blender and have a great Protein Shake. It is now 4:30 and I just had a big bowl of Healthy Choice chicken Noodle. Lower Sodium (390 g). I am staying away from high sodium stuff it set me back a week ago today by 4 lbs. and it took me all week to get those 4 lbs off again. No more. Sip on 32 oz. water thru evening. around 7 tonight i will have a salad with johsonville salami snack bites (prob 4 or 5) slices up in the salad. i put lettuce, little onions, banana peppers, a few olives, cucumber, a few baby tomato's. dressing is homemade by my wonderful husband. Honk - Thanks for your input. I should have clarified a few things. I only use 80 cal. light yogurt and my Protein powder is 120 cal./scoop, 1 gm fat, 3 gms carbs and 24 gms protein. The cheese I use it Jarlsberg Light (50 cal./slice, 2 gm fat, 9 gms protein) or sometimes I do use the Laughing Cow Light and spread some on each slice of turkey. Dessert is usually on a Friday and/or Saturday/Sunday night, because I tend to eat less and drink more on the weekends when I'm running errands. Never more than 2 nights a week though. I also eat VERY small portions if I do have dessert. My doctor requires that I focus on protein and carbs and not so much on calories. I do buy lighter varieties of products if their carb count is not severely compromised. I'm VERY diligent about eating healthy foods. My husand and son get mad at me because I refuse allow them to live on junk food and am always looking at the nutrition info. on the products that I don't buy on a regular basis. Luckily, I've always been a healthy cook and eater and I want them to both have healthy habits as well!! I'll try and do a calorie breakdown on Fit day or something and see what my calories look like. I don't think they're very high though. I could be wrong, but I will do some calculations. Thank you for your thoughts!! I truly appreciate your response :0)
