Kinda Down...Need to Vent :(
ILoveMaui replied to Beckyyb93's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Becky-- Hang in there, you will get through this. I was sleeved on the 12th and have struggled getting in protein as I have had my fill of shakes. The sweetness was killing me. I have tried a few other things. I bought some zero carb isopure from GNC. It tastes like a sour Kool-Aid. No creamy sweetness like a shake. It is a big bottle (20 ounces) but it has the consistency of water so maybe you can get it down. Take it day by day! -
Hey everyone, I had surgery on 10/30/08, and am hating the liquid diet, and especially the Protein shakes. Any suggestions?

Need Help Getting Ready
nrmanning replied to Lisa1012's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I know what you mean. My surgery is 5 weeks away from today and I am anxious and feel like I am trying to get all the information I can. The thing I don't get the information specifically from my doctor until a few more weeks. I know what protein shakes I am supposed to start on Nov 20 and that is the Isopure but other than that I am trying to absorb as much as I can from this site and a couple others. You are not alone in trying to get ready. Hang in there, time will pass quickly. -
I made it. Not bad for my first day. Had 2 protein shakes and grilled tilapia with green veggies for today's menu. My treat tonight will be a sugar free popsicle.

I can't remember who it was that made the suggestion of Amplified Wheybiolic Protien Advanced powder. But THANK YOU!! :tt2: I went and bought the pouch for $25.99 from GNC on Thursday last week, drank for the first time on Friday and once a day since and I have dropped 5 lbs and gotten my energy back! I was feeling so tired from apparently not getting enough protein daily and my weight loss was bouncing up and down like a yo-yo. I am going to invest in the big container next and make it a daily part of my diet from now on. The only downside is that if you make the full serving amount it gives it will take most of the day to finish drinking it, or at least it did me. I used a smaller 16 oz container this morning and one scoop of powder which the guy at the store recommened and it was easier to finish. So I may have to do one in the morning and one at night, probably after I work out... :smile2:

I was banded on Tuesday, and my left side HURTS. Like, below my breast, more to the left than I ever thought it would. Walking around is uncomfortable, although I am making myself take short walks to try to keep moving the gas around and out as well as keep my bowels from binding up. I had so many people tell me that the surgery was no big deal, but I'm really struggling with the pain! I'm not having any issues drinking my Protein shakes and such, although I have not had a BM since the morning of the surgery. Reassure me?

Counting Calories And Other Things
BlueTattoo replied to BlueTattoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm reaching my 70 g protein a day. But I'm falling short on calories. But I'm also still in the mushy stage now. -
nraeh So glad you are recovering nicely and had an easy surgery! I got sleeved on Wednesday, June 1st as well! Just got out of the hospital Saturday afternoon (TODAY) and I am feeling pretty good too. Haven't tried a shake yet. Still just doing Clear liquids -- I had two sugar free jell-os tonight along with chicken broth, Vitamin Water zero and an sugar free ice pop! But after only being out of the hospital for 10 hours -- I pooped (sorry for the TMI but I am so proud & excited!). So my digestive system is working a - okay. My surgery went fine but it was delayed getting into the operating room. There were several emergency surgeries that bumped my ELECTIVE procedure. So instead of starting at 11 am they didn't start until 3PM so I was dehydrated going into the surgery. Of course they wouldn't let me even have ice chips until after the esophogram (swallow test) and in a major NYC hospital between the time you take the test, your surgeon gets the results and then actually gives a written order to start the patient on liquids takes way more time than a dehydrated gal wants it to take!!! All that aside every day I feel better. My new tiny tummy is still a bit sensitive. When I ingest anything even water I feel lots of contractions that aren't terrible but I would like them to go away. I need to keep taking the anti-nausea drugs and the PPI. I may try diluting a shake with water tomorrow and see if I can get in some Protein. There is always Isopure -- I broke down and bought three bottles (GRAPE/APPLE-MELON/BLUE RASPBERRY). Like you nraeh -- I am glad to be sleeved and looking forward to starting my journey! EJ

I really hope this makes you feel better but I had the same thing. I did great the first week and went back to work at the beginning of my second week. My suregery was 4/23/13. During my second week I started hurting so bad. It was really bad when I would first stand up. Not isolated to one part. On my left side and back. The option my doctor gave was for a CT scan to see if anything was wrong or to allow the swelling to go down. I think I really overdid it my first week or two. Just this week I started to feel a lot better and have been super cautious with every movement. Hope you feel better. My fear that something was wrong was making it even worse.

Welcome to bandland! Broth is the juice you get from cooking meat like beef or chicken. We can buy it here in the can or carton. Jello, hot tea, and protein drinks are all good for you.

One year band anniversary today!!!!!
Froggie D replied to esv2000's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me it is all about controlling my hunger and cravings. I know that carbs are the issue I have to watch. I try to avoid all starches like bread, potatoes, rice, and all sweets by not having them around. If I eat them, my appetite, especially for them, increases dramatically. I try to stick with lean meats (chicken, turkey, diet lean burger, shrimp, pork tenderloin, etc.) low carb veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, zuchinni, green Beans, peppers, mushrooms, cucumbers, salad greens, etc), occasionally beans of all sorts, and limited fresh fruits. If I am hungry I bump up my Protein with Protein powder. That way my hunger stays in better control. I was banded April 7 and have had two fills so far and have 2.5cc in my band. I am looking forward to another fill next week. My band is great, but what I put in it makes a world of difference. I am better when I stay away from heavy carbs. The band has helped tremendouly but my chioces make a lot of difference. Good luck wiht your exercise and food choices. It is not easy, but can be done! -
Protien Shakes and Drinks Questions
hakunamatata_ca replied to Mandie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I need to know that too !! Great timing ... good luck on your surgury. How many grams of protein a day are necessary after surgury? I don't want to loose hair etc. What about vitamins and I guess Nexium will be on that list. -
I usually drink half in the morning after my workout and then the other half in the evening if I don't get in all my Protein through eating. I just put it in the fridge and let it get real cold for the evening. Or I drink the rest as a snack.

I imagine that it isn't very tasty but seems like a good way to get a lot of Protein. Even if it is gross I have to drink it!

Should I Or Shouldn't I
snuggie replied to smileygirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If your struggling to get in your protein, then the last thing you should be worried about is eating a carb. Eat a Greek yogurt instead. -
I am about 6 weeks and still find it extremely difficult to eat food. It's not that it doesn't go down ok, but I have no desire to eat and nothing really tastes good. Never in my life did I think food wouldn't taste good...lol. Just curious if this is a phase or does your taste buds really change and you don't enjoy things that use to. I am really struggling to get in my protein...I can only get about 40 grams in right now.

Go to a drug store and get some benefiber. A lot of people here use miralax but benefiber is less harsh on your system. You need to increase your Water intake too. It really helps because you are mostly on Proteins. -
What happens to food after you eat it is extremely complicated (taking up most or all of a semester in a university biochemistry course). I'll try not to get too scientific here. I CAN tell you that the main way your body is powered is via aerobic respiration which, through a complicated process, takes glucose (sugar) and oxygen and turns them into energy (ATP), Water, and carbon dioxide (this is why we need to breathe in oxygen and breathe out CO2). Your body can take building blocks from any type of food and use it to make glucose (this happens in the liver), so in a way, the answer to your question is yes. However, unless you are on the Atkins diet or have not had a meal in a day or so, probably most of the glucose in your body comes from carbohydrates in your diet. Your body can take any carbohydrate and break it down more or less directly to glucose. Proteins and fats, on the other hand, must be broken down and then rebuilt into glucose (it is "easier" for your body to use carbs for energy). Plus, your body's cells are constantly growing and dividing and producing hormones, etc., and they need amino acids and fatty acids to do so. Thus the proteins and fats you eat are more likely to be broken down and used for these purposes. These are more or less the theories behind high-Protein, low-carb diets. When your body is carb-depleted, it is forced to use fat and protein for energy. This may cause you to lose weight, but is not the way your body is meant to work and thus can be dangerous. It can lead to a condition called ketosis (which can cause nausea, dehydration, headaches, light-headedness, irritability, bad breath, and kidney problems), and also causes loss of muscle mass. Plus, the high fat and cholesterol content and low-Fiber content of these diets can lead to heart and digestive problems. I know that is probably more than you wanted to know but it seems like most people, when asking questions such as this, would be wondering about the implications of different diets. so everything we eat eventually turns into sugar to fuel the body in one way or another....Look at what a potato can give you as far as nutrients and Vitamins...... My advice is to try everything and eat what suits your makeup and limit the carbs...as they are the ones that your body does not have to work hard at turning into glucose... I eat a little of everything I want....10 months out and 160 lbs. down I think it is working!!

It really depends on the cause of your GERD. If it's something fixable, like from a hiatal hernia, then that can be done at the same time they place the band. If the GERD is from something that can't be fixed, the band may not be the best option for you. Acid reflux is very bad with the band because it can cause erosion. So, talk to your doctor for sure before making a decision. On a personal level, my brother wanted the Lap Band but he also has GERD that isn't fixable. Because of it, his surgeon has recommended the Sleeve for him because he'd be at high risk for band erosion. -

I bought the Isopure and the powdered protein at my local GNC. The only place I have seen UNJURY is at the hospital pharmacy. Good luck -

Check out the isopure clear Protein drinks. I REALLY like them.... index For a protein/milk mix shake, I use Dymatize ELITE (Cafe Mocha). I never thought I would actually LIKE something like this, but I look forward to my shake every morning!!! -
Yes, politics, private schooling and Protein (roflmao!!!!) guaranteed to cause fights amongst even the best friends. I never discuss my polotical beliefs or educational choices, dont know why I cant shut my mouth on the protein issue, tee hee. Something about being online makes us all tend to be a bit more vehement and a bit less respectful, I think. I get angry quite easily but I always regret it, and afterall, what on earth does it MATTER if someone you'll never meet and never know thinks differently to you?
-
My personal opinion? If you are having a hard time eating, I would eat anything that appeals to you. You are eating so little that calorie counting is probably a non-issue. You have to fuel your body with something, even if it isn't the healthiest thing in the world. Later on you can become more choosy. Keep up with fluids and do your best w/ protein. Good luck!

Found new protein.....
ppressey24 replied to ppressey24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ordered the pure. It has no taste so i basically wanted it to add in other things to get the extra Protein. Now i was doing infusions for my chronic fatigue syndrome, ms, and my arthritis. But it didnt help but for a couple of days. I read where tumeric in the natural root or the Vitamin helps so i started with the vitamin, and thats all ive had now in 6 months. Im only 1 week post op and i no longer need that total replacement that i was looking at in april. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
