    Protein snacks soft food stage

More like a twist on a protein drink. I bought an Inspire Mint Chip protein drink mix and freeze it to eat like ice cream. The consistency is more icy than creamy, but I take longer to eat it and I can pretend it's ice cream. I second the cheese, love cheese.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Yayy!! You are almost there🤗 I will keep you in my prayers most definitely. Fairlife are my favorite too. Does anyone know where to get the strawberry flavor? And broth I use kettle & fire bone broth. I also like the chicken boullions by herbox green container. They have low sodium options too!
  3. What are some good high protein snacks for soft food stage? I'd like to start moving away from protein drinks. Thanks!

It happened to me too…I think it’s the multivitamin w/iron but I almost gave up on protein shakes because I thought that is what tasted like metal

Oh wow does he understand your goal for protein? And, your calorie intake has drastically reduced? Suggestion, maybe if you post a diary in your kitchen of what you are eating daily, then he may be able to understand. Good luck!!

I am also going to blow off a little steam here guys. As you all know getting protein in isn’t easy. Yesterday I grabbed some protein custard from the fridge and Hubby said “eating again?” That was like a knife in my back.

    Constipation

oh the Weight-Loss-Phase-Constipation-Woes. I feel you. I was chronically constipated for months after surgery. I developed a regimen of adding 2 tsps of Benefibre to my protein shakes twice a day, drinking tons of water, and exercising/moving regularly. And if i hadn't pooped in 4-5 days i'd take a dose of Senokot or similar. If i still didn't go after more than week, then it was time for a glycerin suppository...which usually did the trick (only 2-3 times did i have to do 2 suppositories) I did notice it got better when i started eating more veggies and fat (i was mostly just eating protein during weight loss phase). Now i no longer do the daily Benefibre and poop pretty regularly every 3-4 days (which is a huge departure of having to poop 2+ times a day pre-wls). I only get constipated now during/after vacations...but i think thats because i have an irrational need to only poop at home lol!

    DS Buddies Wanted - 26 Y/O

It's good to hear how people are doing after having DS surgery. Perchance, does anyone live in Washington (state), Oregon, Idaho, Montana, or Utah? I live in Washington and so far have had one person who knows of a DS surgeon - in Utah. Looks like that may be my closest option.
  9. Forgot I do have one issue post my gall removal. (Can’t believe I f forgot to mention it.) I now don’t absorb protein as well & I also stopped absorbing my HRT med. I take creons to help with the protein & now use a patch for HRT. Apparently malabsorption with certain nutrients can be a side effect but it’s not common. I don’t know anyone else without a gall who has an issue. It’s probably just me.
  10. P.S. the other option - staying obese - isn't good for your health, either. In fact, it's probably worse.

    Been Reading Nightmare complications ?

I have all three of your nightmares. I knew all about them. I did not know I would get GERD too, I hoped to swerve it. My hair is growing back very slowly but I have begun to love the new me in a pixie cut My Nausea and GERD are under control - ish, I still get bad days and nights where acid wakes me Throwing up foam is called the foamies. Eat too fast, eat too much or eat a wrong food and yep that's a pain in the a--chest until its either vomited or it works its way through my stomach. So knowing what I know now about all that and the frequency that I get it, would I have this surgery? Hell yes, in a heartbeat. My life has changed dramatically. I feel as if I have lost 25 years. I have a life. I don't hide away anymore. I am super confident. Now what you must decide is - if the pendulum swings your way and you get these side effects, is it time for your surgery ? You are always going to mess with your insides, you are loosing most of your stomach. For lots of us with lots of medical problems its a no brainer and last ditch effort to save our lives. This surgery is not an easy option. I hope you work it out

    May 2023 surgeries

Surgery done on May 31st and it went good. My doctor was pleased. I took a nausea pill before surgery and a patch was placed behind my ear for nausea. So no nausea for me!! I stayed overnight and walked every 2 hours. I am able to keep liquids down with no problem but I get full quickly. I had revision surgery distal bypass. I am sore but I take the liquid Tylenol for that. I'm not hungry, but I am sipping on Premier Protein clear and the milky Protein Premier.
  13. Sorry you are dealing with this. First, you’re down 50 lbs in a year and 9 months!!!! That’s friggen awesome!!! My guess is it took you a lot longer to gain that 50lbs than it was to lose it! Second, it sounds like you may benefit from some counseling to help with the head trash- I will be the first to admit my mental health work impacted me so much more than any of the physical work. Last, go back to the basics of your eating habits. Track your intake (calories and macros), eat protein first then vegetables then carbs, and then if you’re able to get moving and exercise! Doesn’t matter if you’re walking or powerlifting… get moving. Activity drives attitude. Hope this helps and remember, the surgery isn’t the fix… it’s a tool to allow you to make sustainable healthier lifestyle decisions. You got this! My last thoughts are look forward and not backwards. Whatever you did or didn’t do can’t be changed. Today is your opportunity to be a little better than you were yesterday! Tomorrow you get an opportunity to be a little better than you were today…. Rinse and repeat and keep fighting the good fight. You deserve to be the best version of yourself!!!

Same, don't stress too much. This initial phase is hard, just do your best. Once we're all eating normally it should be easier to hit protien goals. I'm vegetarian so its a bit harder and I'll be relying a bit on the snacks between meals to be high protein. I cant fit in snacks yet. I think i need to set a timer to drink. I can drink just fine, I need to force myself too though.
  15. Anyone get a sleeve that has existing Nutcracker Esophagus? Mine is not caused by reflux but I fear the operation would cause reflux and trigger more spasms. I have spasms that last about 6 hours at a time and feel like a heart attack. Would a bypass be a better option even though my BMI is only 38?

I am getting so frustrated. I’m having a hard time meeting my daily protein and water goals ☹️
  17. I'm sorry you're struggling. I'm not that far into the journey. However, I would go back to basics. Protein, fluids, and track EVERYTHING. Do you still have access to your dietitian? I'm sure others will have great advice as well.

Anyone take up running after surgery???

I started running after my surgery. I started out slow for two reasons, 1. Cause I was and 2. Cause I didn't want to have any injuries. Each person is different and what I did may not work for you. I started with a 5k. I would run so far then walk the rest. After 2 weeks I would add a little more distance and just keep going from there until I was running the whole 5k. I then set up a schedule to run the 5k (everyday for me) and 2 days to add more distance so I could run 10ks 15ks or any other distance. It will come, it just takes time. When I run long distances I use the GU's to help out with endurance. I use them every 2 miles and make sure I get water at the water stations. I also made sure that I had a protein bar with minimum 20 grams of protein an hour before the race. I hope this helps and if you have any questions just let me know. Good luck with your new adventure!
  20. Not everyone develops reflux issues after sleeve - it's something like 30%, and for most it can be managed medically (i.e., with PPI's). There are some who have it pretty severely so their only option is revision, although again, for most, it can be managed in other ways. I had reflux before surgery and went with the RNY because I figured I'd end up being one of the 30%, and I didn't want to take the risk. But others take it - and they end up doing fine. It's really kind of a crap shoot. I think a lot of surgeons prefer the sleeve because it's a much simpler surgery, so they're probably more likely to recommend that one. Luckily, mine did recommend RNY for me, although he said he'd be glad to do either. He's also been doing these surgeries for 30+ years, so he's done a ton of RNY's. I think some of the younger ones have most of their experience with sleeve since that's been the popular of the two surgeries for the last 10 years or so.

Eating out for the first time

I think the first time I actually ate something resembling food was about a month out; I had some scrambled eggs and grits, was able to eat just a few bites of each. You may find it easier at first to order individual side items as opposed to a full meal (I'm 22 months out and still can't even finish the sandwich from a kids meal let alone the apples or whatever that come with it...and no, I don't eat fast food regularly before anyone jumps all over me.) Purees with protein are hard to pull off in a restaurant, unfortunately. Most people who are not bariatric patients are not big fans of textureless bowls of meat slop. It will get easier, though, when you move on to soft foods and no restrictions.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hey I am right there with you. Day three and I have considered eating my dogs at this point. As dumb as it sounds getting on here and reading about everyone else's suffering really seems to help. Partially because I am an A-hole but also to see that we are not alone. I have noticed today seems better so far as I am getting use to it. My wife also suffers from my condition (A-hole) and brought a bunch of chips and junk food in the house the first day. She also wanted hotdogs and crap for dinner last night (I do all cooking) so I made them that before eating my cabbage soup with a nasty protein drink (Root Beer Float sucks). Dependant on what she wants for dinner tonight I may have to let the dog lick it first! So I guess being petty is my coping mechanism.

    July 2023 buddies

Hi @Jamie72! Thanks for sharing! I understand about going back and forth about surgery. I opted against the new drugs because they're in such short supply and I don't want to be dependent on the drug supply chain to keep my weight off. Surgery seems like the option that gives me the most control of my success. I didn't think about Reddit, but I agree youtube has videos that help.

    1 day post op.

Hi. I had sleeve yesterday and was released to home this afternoon. I currently drinking 2 oz of Gatorade zero with protein every 30 min and will switch to broth shortly with unflavored protein. Any advice to get this gas out? How do I know when to take the med RX for stomach cramping. I’m not sure if it’s gas or new stomach adjusting. Thanks all :). Scared but excited for this journey. The gas pain is intense.

Yes, I get the statements I know you starving aren't you hungry. I'm determined to make it through, this is my 3rd day of liquid I am still allowed to eat 3 to 4 ounces of protein, but that's my last results because next week it's all liquids no meat what so ever
