This is a response to a thread started about someone's first real meal 23 days after surgery containing fried shrimp, shrimp scampi, creamy shrimp Pasta, rice and an alcoholic beverage.Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App That's what I call a "bait post". She knew exactly what kind of response she was going to get.... Hahahahaha! Shrimp...bait... Did you intend that, or was it just good luck on your part?

    Any Post Op MARIJUANA Users?

I live in Washington State where recreational weed is legal and stigma around using marijuana is dwindling. My doctor advised to stay away from alcohol for at least two months post-op so I've been stone cold sober for more than a month now (including pre-op diet phase). I've also wondered if marajuana is a "safe" alternative to drinking post-surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

If you buy premixed Protein shakes in the store make sure they have good protein content and low sugar. Sugar alcohols should be O.K. It is much better than sugar. There are two phases after surgery. These are the Weight Loss phase and the Maintenance phase. At 4 years post-op, you are in the maintenance phase. The following article describes my experience with the maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

    Please... anyone?

I get the whole dumping syndrome too. So I just don't have sugar at all. Or just a very low tiny amount. But I just get an upset stomach and sweats and stuff like that. I was sleeved 10/21/16. I hope this helps you somewhat. But don't just look for sugar. look for other sugar too. Sugar alcohols, sacrulose (spelling could be wrong), high fructose corn syrup, and so on Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App
  6. Dumping is bad. You periodically head to the restroom to vomit over a 4 hour time period. You cannot sleep. After RNY gastric bypass surgery the part of your stomach that process fat and sugars has been cut away. So if you consume those foods it can lead to dumping. After about a year, your intestines will figure out something is wrong and pick up the slack by learning how to process these foods. Therefore you can introduce them back into your diet again. Having a sweet tooth is not good. I had one and as a result I developed diabetes. My surgery placed that disease into remission. And as a result, I generally do not consume sugar. I rely on synthetic sweeteners such as splenda and sugar alcohols and no calorie natural sugars like stevia. There are more and more products showing up on the grocery store shelves today that use these sugars. And they can satisfy your sweet tooth without gaining the weight or becoming diabetic.

Has the Mrs. returned yet? Was the wine drank from a solo cup? Lol Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T337A using the https://siteowners.tapatalk.com/byo/displayAndDownloadByoApp?rid=87332]BariatricPal Haha, I'm not that far gone. I was using a small coffee cup. She's not due back for a little while. It's kind of boring around here without her. And what's wrong with a red solo cup? They are a staple here in TX. I've had my fair share of alcohol from them over the years, but wine deserves a glass! From an earlier post littleBill said while the Mrs. was gone he was only doing plastic and paper cups, plates etc. Nothing wrong with red solo cups. Have them myself Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using the BariatricPal App

    February 9th sleevers?

I'm soooo nervous haha...i think it's more being prepared for life after...I don't drink alcohol so the only real socializing I do is food. And I'm keeping this a secret so I'm assuming the first little while will be difficult Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  12. That I have more will power than I ever knew. I don't have any problem saying no to unhealthy foods or alcohol and Desserts. That I would actually fall in love with fitness. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. Like the comment about infant stomach that's exactly what I compare my new self to. I am training myself to eat correctly and right amounts. Your new stomach can hold only about 2-4 ounces of food each meal. No drinking anything at least 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after. You will fill up with liquid and not get the Protein you need. My diet was no caffeine, alcohol, sugar, carbs. Just Water and protein. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Help

Have been in active afib for over a year.. Nothing worked to slow heart rate or give me regular Sinus rhythm. Having pace maker this Wednesday....Hope to get back on track. Feeling sorry for myself I went back to old habits. I am 4 years out and moved to an area that has limited bariatric surgery support groups. So how many calories, how many of those are carbs. Are Protein shakes etc. That are in the 'store' safe? Are they considered low carb...And the night. Sugar alcohols don't bother my digestive system....But they seem to make me not lose weight..Even if I make the bars a meal Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App

    Two day pre liquid diet

You're getting close! Mine is on 1/10. The pre-op I was put on consists of protein shakes, fat free low sodium broth, sf jello, lots of water and sf water drinks like LifeWater, and the nutritionist said if you absolutely need something that feels like a cheat, go for a sf pudding. I was instructed no dairy, no caffeine, no alcohol, no NSAIDS, and pretty much nothing else except the above consuming 80 grams of protein a day. Good luck on your surgery!
  18. I am 3 years postop and went on my first date in almost 10 years back in November. My abstinence was by choice...I love being single and the freedom and independence that includes. Long story short, I said yes just to be polite when a client asked me to lunch. I had no intention of getting serious, or even going in a second date. But he Turned out to be a great guy and we are a hot item now. Anyways, back to your question. I told him about my surgery around the 4th date to explain why I ate so little (and drink so damn much water) He had made dinner a couple times and I didn't want him to think I didn't like his cooking. It is really a nonissue and he thinks it's great that I did what I did in order to be healthy and feel better. He also thinks it's great that I'm such a cheap date and he has no problem sharing appetizers or splitting an entree when we go out. Good luck, and I guess do whatever you feel comfortable with as far as sharing about your surgery. In my case, he had no problem sharing about his past alcohol problems (been sober 16 years) or the medication he takes for depression, so sharing about my surgery was an easy and natural thing to do. This is definitely the most open, grown up relationship I've ever had. Of course, I haven't dated seriously since my 20's. This is much better.

    So depressed. Really need help

to people's good advice! - Absolutely see a doctor to re-evaluate meds! - The hormone dump is real and can cause all sorts of trouble - Depending on your meds, the alcohol might be making it worse - Consider trying to be outside in natural light for a while each day - Check/improve your Vitamins - winter gray + no D = bad news I'm saying this as someone who's been on meds for 10 years, has serious nutritional deficiencies, and lives in the stinking grey hole known as Seattle. I know exactly how hard it is to go out and do stuff, but judging from your list, your depression is not under control and is trampling all over you. Talk to a doc and start trying to rein it in. . 21. I think it's sad the stigma involved with marijuana. The way you had to throw the 'disclaimer' in before you posted your question. I mean, nobody does that with alcohol? 26 states have marijuana legal in some form, and I'm sure more will follow. It's SO much less dangerous than alcohol. My dad was a pot smoker and a drinker. Guess what he died from at 56? Cirrhosis from drinking. Yup. That being said, I'm a very casual smoker. Like before surgery, a couple times every few months, to after surgery a couple times a year (2.5 years out from surgery). I would just be careful newly post op. I think you should wait until you are at least fully healed at around a couple months or so. I ended up cutting way back on smoking it because it hurt when I cough (No idea if it has anything to do with surgery or not, but i can actually feel it in my tummy sometimes when I do), and I would get a little bit of the munchies, although not too bad. I have a hard enough time staying on track lately, so I don't want anything making it even more difficult for me! Anyway, my two cents

CAN you eat vs SHOULD you eat

I was self pay in Mexico. I read on here and dozens of publicly accessible medical journals through NIH, NHS and Health Canada before even making contact with the surgeon in Mexico. I started receiving preop emails around the time I was to begin and have received weekly post op care emails each week since surgery. I also fortunately had a long history (of success) with low carb and ketogenic diets, and unfortunately also with drug and alcohol addiction and other self destructive behaviours. The latter contributed to my weight gain, and I made a decision to get totally clean and chart a new path for my health and sanity. Perhaps that's why I don't mind straight advice. I can't get down with Jesus or higher power BS and thus 12 step programs were never on my radar. I indulged myself in information and tried to educate myself as well as possible about any and all possible outcomes. This has always been my approach, and I totally accept that it's not for everyone. Some people want information presented to them personally on a silver platter and some of us need to be muckrakers and find it ourselves to believe it. What I can't accept is anti-informational people. People who don't want the truth and are happy subsisting in an echo chamber of what they want to be true instead of what is true. People who want sympathy instead of empathy.
  25. I will caution you against this... no alcohol! You have an infants stomach and you wouldn't give an infant alcohol would you? You drank while eating? Another huge no no. If you took the bread off the shrimp, I could see you eating that, shrimp scampi would be ok if you let most of the fat drain off. Same for the shrimp only on the Pasta. No pasta! But even taking those measures, you should only be eating about 5 pieces and that is it! Your stomach is 4-8ozs big and still healing. The nerves haven't healed entirely either yet, so you won't know if you have injured yourself? You spent a lot of money on this procedure... would be a waste if you continue to eat like the old you. I understand this might have been a "treat" meal... but, please read what we all have said. Find another outlet to "treat" yourself. 11/11/16: HW 380 11/28/16: Duodenal Switch Surgery 11/28/16: SW 374 lbs 1/6/17: CW 337 lbs
