    May 2023 surgeries

La.nena, I just started soft foods today and don't think I could do it with just 1 protein drink either. Saw my doctor today and he said to try and replace the drinks, but make sure to keep supplementing with them to hit my goals. For reference, today I had 1/2 egg 1/3 of a greek yogurt mixed with vanilla protein powder 1 cheese stick 75% of a turkey stick 25% of a ricotta bake (which was yummy) I honestly could have done without the cheese stick as I am not sure that I was really that hungry, and it was decently close to dinner time (like 90m before). I ended up hitting the same protein level I had yesterday, but got 10g more of fat and 2g more of carbs. Overall, very happy with the day.

I found tuna has a lot of protein. You can add unflavored protein to anything liquid or pureed. If you are set on foods for protein, set a timer and not wait until you're hungry.

    May 2023 surgeries

So the last 3 days I can’t meet my protein goal. I’m on soft foods. Only 1 protein drink a day. I’m never really hungry. I try and eat and take 3 bites and I’m done. I meet my liquid goal but that’s it. My dr wants me to eat 3 to 4 small meals a day and try not to do more then 1 protein drink. I’m never hungry 😑
  4. Awwwww - David, I sure am glad to see yo on the other side. Pleased things have gone well for you and that you are up and about - I know they try to get you up and about as soon as possible. I had my surgery on 1st and am still doing ok. I too am pacing myself and can now drink almost the required minimum litre and a half of water per day and am also getting better at getting in pureed proteins. Went out for a longer walk today to get some banana's to puree with protein yoghurt - it was a longer walk but i just rested up a little afterward. Getting stronger with each day. For those of you having surgery on 6th - go on - you got this xx
  5. I have a bunch of unopened protein broths (mostly bone broths). I would love to give away to someone who has surgery coming up. I don't want to throw it away. Or if anyone has a suggestion on what to do with it, I would love some recommendations. I could make soup with it, but it is mostly single serving, dry pouches. I am willing to meet somewhere public. If this post isn't allowed, I'm sorry.

    Lost all motivation

I'm so sorry that happened. And I know how much hurtful words from your spouse can really shake one at their core. Could you find a marriage counselor who does online video calls? I think therapy is the only viable option to get to the root of what's going on. Or maybe a bariatric surgery support group for partners. Someone had mentioned that he may feel threatened by your weight loss. That is not an uncommon problem; especially if the partner is insecure. Maybe try to build up his security. Men normally respond to verbal praise. For example, in the first few weeks after my surgery, my husband was a very grumpy person to be around. When I commented on it, he blew up and said how overwhelmed he felt with work, taking care of a large portion of the home responsibilities, that it's been all about me and my recovery, and a few other things. I took some time to process, and in the right timing, I thanked him for all he's doing and told him that it did not go unnoticed. I reassured him and built him back up. Since then, things have been going really well. Your therapist may have some other ideas.

    Lost all motivation

If this happened to me, I would feel like the rug had been pulled too. Being overweight as a woman means feeling like you’re not good enough, that your worth is tied to your weight. When you start losing weight and this happens, it would make me feel like I’m not good enough no matter what I do. I would feel so defeated like, where do I go from here? But since I am outside looking in, I can tell you that you DO matter and your weight does NOT define your worth or value. If your husband isn’t attracted to you and apparently never was, you have to decide for yourself if HE is good enough for YOU, if this type of relationship is what YOU want. How you go about figuring this out is up to you… a counselor, therapist, etc are all great options. I also wonder, from experience, if he is a little insecure himself (about you and your weight loss). At this point there are probably few people who know you as well as he does, and he would know what to say to derail you even if he doesn’t realize it. Just thoughts, may or may not hold water. Just know that you have done incredibly well, you should be so proud of what you’ve accomplished!!

    Best broth?

I know this thread is a couple of years old, but I wanted to offer some suggestions for your pre-op diet. When it comes to tasty broths, Healo Broth is a solid choice. They offer a range of flavors that can make those liquid days more enjoyable. Check out their website for more info. This Broth is packed with goodness, perfect for your full liquid diet. Whether you're craving savory chicken or flavorful beef, they've got options to satisfy your taste buds during this phase. Staying hydrated and getting that protein kick from their broths will help you sail through those two weeks before your surgery. Hang in there, and I hope your surgery went well and you had a smooth recovery.

Surgeon suggested bypass instead of sleeve.

I am 50yrs old and had gastric bypass dec. 19. My surgeon recommended gb over the sleeve because I have gerd and he said the sleeve would make it worse. I was disappointed and wasn't sure about being re-routed. I agreed as I trusted my surgeon. I do not regret my decision. I had very little discomfort from the surgery. I have had no problems with gerd. I was hoping that my body would reject sugar but it does not. My surgeon had told me prior to surgery that dumping syndrome is only a possible side effect. I have had a few very mild cases, keep in mind I am a sugar-holic. I can still consume sugar and fat moderately. I have found that I prefer protein shakes to food most of the time. I don't and never have liked cooking. If you enjoy cooking and your recipes you will probably be able to tolerate it in small amounts. One thing I've found is that you don't know what your stomach can handle until after the surgery. It is different for everyone. Some are sensitive to sugar and fat, some are not. There's no way to tell ahead of time. My only regret is that I still get hungry and my stomach still growls (not the gurgle you hear when it's circling the drain that is different). Gastric bypass does not completely get rid of ghrelin. Once I got my routine down it lessened. Hopefully will stop soon. Don't overthink and worry too much. Just take it one step at a time, your body will tell you what to do. Once you heal, you should be able to eat normally for the most part in small amounts as I do. This is my first post ever so forgive me if I've rambled or responded incorrectly.
  10. 2 weeks & 5 days post op and I'm doing great

Gatorade w/protein makes me gag now. I think from having so much of it.

I had the ricotta bake for a few days. I'm in the puree stage but rotisserie chicken, chicken meatballs, cold cuts, & plain tuna don't bother me.

I had a plain old fashioned peppermint and it made me nauseous...

    Bariatric Myths??

Oh yes. I’m always surprised by how often people still say they’re getting a gastric band & that they’re still offered as an option. It takes very little reading to discover all the issues with them. I remember when I was researching options pre surgery I was quite astounded by the problems & so very quickly ruled it out. No way!

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hi Carla, I was on the same diet as you and I barely lost 4 pounds, so please do not worry. I think they recommend the number of protein shakes based on height and weight, some are on three, some on four. My surgery is in 6 hours and I will ask if the fact that I lost only 4 pounds is an issue, but I do not think so.

    Bariatric Myths??

Nothing wrong with being a skeptic or wanting to dig for further information before making a final decision or taking a position. Maybe some of the malabsorption conflicting information could be attributed to simply how your body may react to the surgery. It’s not expected to occur but might in rare cases. Same could be said of any surgery. For example it’s very unusual for people to develop a protein malabsorption issue after a gall removal surgery but here I am. Keep track of your vitamin needs with blood tests. Then you can make informed decisions about what vitamins you do or don’t need & how much you need to take. And don’t be surprised by variations in your levels & therefore changing needs. I think sleeve is popular as it’s the less invasive in regards to changes to how the body works of the surgeries and can be converted to a stronger surgery if needed. Same with the band back in the day. That was my thinking anyway.

The fairlife nutrition plan shakes are 150 calories and 30 G protein. Maybe try those !!
  15. Criteria I was told was 1. Less than 200 calories per serving, 2. At least 25 grams of protein, and 3. Maximum of 5 grams of sugar and fat. Yours seems to fit criteria

  18. How much protein powder in a bottle of water?
  19. Good afternoon community, I hope you are doing well! I finally started my journey April 2023 after years of it being put on the table by my primary care doctor. It was hard seeing the scale reach 293 at 25 years old. I have days when I am really excited about the journey and finally being comfortable in my body but there are other days when I have doubts. My doubts don't usually center around food. I am ready for the lifestyle change and am researching the best proteins and recipes for when the time comes. I think about how some who have the surgery can't consume water the same. I think about the side effects, the nausea, the vomiting, dumping syndrome. I'm scared of possibly regretting it and think about the worst happening. I wanted more information on your journeys if you don't mind sharing. Your pros, your cons, if you had doubts and what helped you get over those? For those who had the surgery, do you have any regrets? is there something you would do differently? things you wished you knew before the surgery? On a positive note, what are the milestones and the good things that came with the surgery? I want to know, if anyone regretted it? Thank you in advanced for your replies!

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

My surgery is tomorrow, I will not know the time until this evening after 6:00 p.m. I do not know why Mayo Clinic does this, but they do not let you know what time the surgery is until the night prior to the surgery. They did the same for my husband’s brain surgery couple of years ago. I still have doubts about this gastric bypass surgery and probably I will until they roll me in, but I think it is a normal reaction to fear. I have so many underlying health conditions that will be resolved with this surgery and I still doubt my decision. My mind will play this game until I wake up from the surgery and I will know that I do not have any other options. 😀

My nutritionist advised me to add protein powder to everything, including the water I drink at least in the first month after surgery so I can meet the protein goal. Just some info for you.

    Protein snacks soft food stage

I wasn’t allowed to snack until solid foods - three meals only in purées & soft. And then it was one snack: a high protein yoghurt (was already eating that as a meal option in purée stage because I stopped shakes once liquids ended) or soft cheese (I liked Jarlsberg & string). After a couple of weeks I could have certain fruit as a snack option too or sometimes ate a wedge of cucumber (peeled) sprinkled with salt. Didn’t have other snacks until I was starting maintenance & I needed to up my calories. But plans are different. Check with your dietician for ideas that are suitable within your plan. PS - Yoghurt drinks are great too - blend your high protein yoghurt with milk.
  23. That’s a tough one to answer & really up to how you personally recover. Some are fine after a week & easily return to work. Some need two, three or four weeks. I took four weeks & needed all of them. I struggled with low blood pressure (which was a pre existing tendency), lethargy & would get doughy in the head at times. But I am someone who always seems to take longer to recover from everything even a cold. Discuss returning part time to begin or with reduced hours each day & keep the option of maybe needing longer open if your employers are willing.
  24. I didn't need help, either. My husband took a week off but ended up going back to work after two days. It was nice having him get things for me (like my protein shakes), although I could have done it myself. I think I was restricted to lifting up to 10 lbs max for the first month or so - so lifting your dog may be a bit much. Pet stairs would be a good solution (my 18-year-old arthritic cat uses those to get up on my bed)

    August surgery buddies!

I haven't lost anything close to 10 lbs any month this year. The last month I lost a significant amount of weight was December 2022. This year it's 1-2 pounds per month, even less. I've been tracking my eating more religiously these last few weeks, and a typical day is 1100-1200 kcal. Shouldn't I be losing or is that enough for maintenance? Will I have to go even lower? I'm getting 50-60 grams of protein most days.
