Having a bypass, revision, on 5/27 - just spoke to my surgeon via teleconference... finally moving forward. I didn't have any hair loss with the original surgery - sleeve, back in 2015. I had thinning but was on Biotin. Is the revision, bypass, worse for thinning/losing hair?

Reflux remains after revision 😩
ge0rgette2 replied to itzmekc's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
For some reason, I would think you would have the opposite affect, out the other end since it's intestines. Why are revisions slower paced for weight loss, do you think? Just got off the phone w/ my surgeon - had a tele visit, hospitals opening up there, I won't be on a COVID floor, but COVID will be in the hospital somewhere.. I feel comfortable ... as I know they'll clean and take precautions, etc. plus my husband had a mild case of Covid about 7 weeks ago ..... so I've been exposed.. Just need to stay safe now and not get it to have surgery. -
Reflux remains after revision 😩

You can definitely throw up after bypass! I wonder where people got the idea that you can't?? weight loss after revisions IS slow for most people how long ago was your revision? I'm surprised you're still having reflux. If it was recent, does your surgeon have you on a PPI? Most surgeons put people on them for the first 3-6 months (for revisions AND for virgin surgeries. -
Hate bypass
New&Improved replied to DesperateEC's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes everyone knows that a 2nd or 3rd surgery is totally different to a first surgery I'm glad I made the right choice and did months of research before choosing the BYPASS. Seen many people needing to be revised to bypass for many reasons over the years. My journey lasted about 8 months from when I began my pre-op diet to when I felt I was in maintenance and all I did was eat very little calories and carbs and was very strict on myself living off shakes predominantly for months and shed 154lbs and now BMI is 22.7 I feel great. I look great. And my metabolism is amazing. -
ISO success stories with Hashimoto's and Sleeve
Losingit2018 replied to kellieym's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have hypothyroid and have had sleeve surgery. Had to revise to bypass because of severe GERD. I have had much more success with the bypass although I did lose weight with the sleeve. If I had it to do all over again, I would go straight for bypass. Mostly because of the high rate of gerd among people that are sleeved. I also believe that the bypass is just a much better surgery as far as losing weight. It has been for me. -
Can someone tell me how long it took
Hop_Scotch replied to DwGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My timing info will probably useful/of interest for anyone in Australia and who have a revision from ESG to sleeve. ESG is not covered by medicare or private health insurance in Australia so no real requirements other than some blood tests. Could have had my ESG within three or four weeks of my initial appointment with the doctor, however, I delayed the procedure for some leave that was already planned a few months away. 18 months later for my revision to sleeve I went out of state to a surgeon who had already done ESG conversions to sleeve (some will only do bypasses). I was fortunate, the office arranged for me to have an endoscope the day following my initial consult and from there it was less about one month to my sleeve. I had some bloods taken in between, Medicare/private health insurance covered this one but I did have out of pocket costs. There were no required to lose weight prior to the surgery or pysch clearances. There was one appt with the dietician (did that the same day as my initial consult) and two appointments following the surgery. -
Hate bypass

Don’t get me wrong you guys. My revision was done on March 9 and I’ve already lost 35 pounds so I’m happy, it’s just not what I was expecting . I had the perfect sleeve but the pregnancies forced my pouch to spread. The last pregnancy I was on complete bed rest for the entire thing. I guess I’m sad -
My surgery revision from band to bypass was yesterday morning and I got home tonight about 5pm. I’m very sleepy and I will say there is good amount of pain on my left side which is controlled by medication. The biggest challenge I have this early is having a hard time getting comfortable and I have no interest in food. I’m forcing broth and jello. Last week I couldn’t imagine only eating broth and jello and today, I cant imagine being hungry ever. So weird. Even through the fog and pain, I have no regrets!

hi - my nutritionist emailed me a new revised, pre and post bariatric plan... was unsure if it was different from my previous surgery. She has, per day - Vitamin - Bariatric Advantage with or without Iron, Celebrate Mutli with Iron - 18mg, 35, 45, and 60mg too - Bariatric Fusion - all one per day. Calcium Citrate and Vitamin D - Bariatric Advantage, Celebrate, Bariatric Fusion or ReViva Calcium Calcium is 1200-1500mg and vitamin D - 400-800IU unless deficient 2000IU Iron with Vitamin C - 250mg vitamin B12 - 350-500mg I'm going to make a list and order it so I have it when I return home from surgery. Has anyone had the above mentioned brands - I was thinking it doesn't really matter as long as the dosages are the same - etc... Like someone said, Walgreens or CVS generics are just fine. I'll compare everything before I order

Hmmmm. I’m worried. I know I need the revision but I wonder

Corona delaying weight loss surgery dates? Anyone?
ge0rgette2 replied to MaybeMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m in NY. they are opening slowly for electives as emergencies. My surgeon didn’t perform anything either... and he is only doing two day this month. I got lucky as I’m an emergency due to be revised and my hernia. -
Right which is bypass. Do you think revision bypass is the same. Or is that not a thing? Revision just means another procedure?

Twisted Stomach after Sleeve Surgery
adk5112 replied to tessies's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am a 2012 gastric sleeve patient from Mexico. Since June, 2019, I have not been feeling well. Excessive heartburn that Omeprazole will not touch at all. In 2018, I had a hiatal hernia repair and found out in October, 2019 that I have another hiatal hernia and was told it cannot be repaired. I finally met with another surgeon and she discovered I have an angulation in my sleeve. I have noticed since I have started to become extremely sick that I have severe constipation, which I have never experienced with the sleeve. I am now drinking smooth move tea every night which has worked wonders for me, but now the past two mornings I am experiencing these very painful cramps and I am gassy all of the time. I noticed when I would not have BM's for days I would bloat up like a blow fish and would be in a lot of pain. I was told I will need a revision to bypass to repair the hernia and the angulation, but due to Covid it is slowing things up a bit. Plus, this new surgeon is making me see the nutritionist and the psychiatrist. I am hoping my insurance covers with no problem for revision since my BMI is only a 30 and they want a 35 with underlying issues. Surgeon said I cannot gain weight due to it will make it more difficult for her to do surgery on me. Anyone on here that has experienced this, what did you do for the constipation, stomach pain and regurgitation until you got relief? Some days the Omeprazole works and other days I am choking and thinking I am having a heart attack. -
The mixed berry flavor is the only flavor that tastes good. But they are delicious! I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night after my revision to bypass. No other vitamins needed. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001FY1KAE?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Which Vitamins do you use for bypass (revision)!? I bought some on amazon 4m ago as I thought I was having the revision in March But COVID has other plans for me :-( So I bought Bariatric Fusion - vitamins: chewable and Iron chewable soft chews. Omg. horrendous tasting. What do you like? I was thinking of doing Flinstones again like I did with my sleeve. Maybe some gummies.

Corona delaying weight loss surgery dates? Anyone?
ge0rgette2 replied to MaybeMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks!!! I just hope it goes this time! I'm more nervous this time around -- get my hopes up like in March and have the rug pulled out from under me, ya know? to do the liquid right too -- how my body will handle the bypass/revision - unsure if it's considered a full gastric bypass or do they do something different. I need to have my surgical clearance and a COVID test ... Medical clearance this week and next week, probably surgical clearance. Is a revision called a RNY? I better look into it more, I didn't care at the time, due to never knew when it was going to happen. -
Corona delaying weight loss surgery dates? Anyone?

FINALLY!!! Cross your fingers for me! Had a revision date on 3/18 that was cancelled/postponed on 3/16, then moved to 4/29, which was cancelled/postponed on 3/29, received the phone call today that emergency surgeries, elective, my surgeon was informed he has 2 dates in May he can perform ... So I am scheduled for 5/27, hopefully the Governor won't change things in my state - New York. I have to start my 2 week LIQUID tomorrow, eeeeew and eeeeek! didn't expect this at all.. I'm being revised from Sleeve in 2015 to bypass now. I have been suffering horrendous heartburn and vomitting for a year now - was fine in the beginning, day by day, it's worse and worse - had to double up on my medicine - Protonix - have had so many tests it's ridiculous. I can't take much more - also having an umbilical hernia done too while I'm under ...I don't know what to expect... I hope this works and gets rid of the heartburn ... something has to give!!! I hope they don't cancel on me again... esp after doing another liquid diet. I hope I remember what my liquid diet should be .. Anyone been sleeve to bypass - how did you find it? thanks!!! Hope all is well with everyone! -

How is everyone doing - I'm supposed to be a revision .. due to GERD, esophagitis and umbilical hernia, even though the hernia isn't probably related to the sleeve and/or the GERD - they are going to do it anyways, as long as I'm under anesthesia, might as well I was supposed to be 3/18, cancelled on 3/17 - due to the state, New York - I was on a liquid for 2 weeks and omg!!!! that was horrendous - I hope they make a decision soon - things are starting to open up upstate NY right now this week .. Today, things opened for them, I'm downstate, Long Island, and it's still a slow and steady slope down in deaths and positive cases.. So, revisions was 3/18, moved to 4/29, cancelled around 4/1 and nothing so far. reached out to the surgery coordinator today and he seems to think it'll open very soon - he's waiting for the okay - I'm phase 3, which is the 1st to get elective surgeries, as emergencies... Some hospitals here aren't Covid, they are regular. One can hope it'll be any day that I get a date... then back to liquid - ick! -
Surgery tomorrow - I’m scared!!
Rocky_Mountain_Mama replied to Ilanarose's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is also tomorrow and I’m feeling a lot of this too. I’m revising a band to gastric bypass so I feel like, I’ve dive this before, so why the heck am I so nervous?! I think for sure a lot of it is the Covid stuff, and for me it doesn’t help that my family pretty much ignored Mother’s Day yesterday, so I’m feeling sad and sorry for myself today which certainly isn’t the best head space to be in. I hope you will post again after surgery! I’m interested to know how it goes! I know we’ll be just fine and we can compare notes as we heal and get through it! -
Disappointed...

Hi! I’m late to the party y’all! I’m from down south. I had my revision surgery 10 days ago. It went well but my husband wasn’t allowed in the hospital since they were on quarantine and performing emergency surgeries only. Mine was considered emergency since I’ve been throwing up since my sleeve surgery over 2 yrs ago. I had a lot of pain the first couple days and then I fell and it was 10 times worse. I feel so much better finally except for a stabbing pain in my left side/back area. I’m guessing it’s an internal stitch in a muscle cuz it’s the same spot that hurt so bad after I fell. My 1st post op appt is next week. -
Aetna has published new guidelines for Bariatric surgery!!!
Chelle1007 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everybody, I just started my journey this week! The good news is Aetna, my insurance company, and probably many of yours, has revised their obesity surgery guidelines effective May 1, 2020. They have removed the need for weight loss or maintenance of 3 months or 6 months, and now only require 12 intensive appointments in a multi-component program that you are most likely already in the middle of :) So great news... I also talked to the insurance peeps yesterday and asked specifically about the 12 intensive appointments, and they said, it was just a number to guarantee that you were an established bariatric surgery patient following a program, but that the new guidelines were now just based on approval of completing your doctors program!!!!!! Spread the word, you could be a lot closer to a surgery date than you thought :) I have attached the url to the medical bulletin below :) http://www.aetna.com/pharmacy-insurance/healthcare-professional/documents/obesity-surgery-precert-form.pdf On April 21, 2020 this revision was made on the medical bulletin and can be found here http://www.aetna.com/cpb/medical/data/100_199/0157.html#dummyLink2, under the review history on the right side bar, then look for 04/21/2020 "This CPB is revised to state that bariatric surgery is considered medically necessary when criteria are met and member has participated in an intensive multicomponent behavioral intervention designed to help participants achieve or maintain weight loss through a combination of dietary changes and increased physical activity. The intervention must be intensive (12 or more visits) and occur within 2 years prior to surgery. This CPB is revised to remove the requirement that the member maintain or lose weight during this program. This CPB is revised to state that bariatric surgery for is considered medically necessary for adults with a BMI greater than or equal to 35 with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and for adolescents with a BMI greater than or equal to 40 with NASH, when criteria are met. This CPB is revised to require cardiac clearance, obstructive sleep apnea screening, and optimized glycemic control as prerequisites for obesity surgery." I SOOOOOO Hope this makes someones day :) So glad to be here! Aetna PreCertification.pdf -
How can you be successful long-term with WLS if you’ve always failed
summerset replied to meggs353's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
In my opinion WLS is a magic bullet. It is the game changer when it comes to losing excess weight and maintaining the new weight. We don't always succeed on the first try. Sometimes people need a second try or maybe even a third. Inadequate weight loss after lap band is quite common, revision to bypass also and many patients do quite good after revision. Maybe you want to do a quick medline search about this. You're now a few years older and more experienced. Maybe you're now being able to handle problematic things in your life differently. You might also be more disciplined now when it comes to certain things. Think about your younger self and compare it to your now-self. I'm sure you're able to handle things way smoother than you did e. g. 10 years ago. The same can be true for this whole weight loss thing. Of course there is the chance that you might fail again. There is always the chance of failing, doesn't matter if it's weight loss, learning a new language or performing at your job. If we couldn't make these changes before any WLS at all, why is it possible for so many people after they had WLS? It just is because WLS is the game changer. Lapband is different. It doesn't provide the same hormonal changes a bypass does. I always cringe when I read or hear this. "Dedicated". "Eliminate". "Avoid". Same with "struggling", "fighting" or "food is the enemy" etc. - being at war is so damn exhausting. Make peace with food. It's easier in the long run. If you don't white-knuckle things you might discover something interesting: not all lifestyle changes are a struggle or need dedication in the long run. You might indeed discover (or re-discover if you were into sports in younger years) that exercise can be fun and fulfilling. Or that healthier food doesn't taste that bad. Or the opposite around, that this junk food is actually not as tasty as you always thought it is. You might discover, that when you feel more comfortable in your body and with yourself that you don't feel that need to eat in the same strong and overwhelming way. You might notice that you say "No, thanks but I don't want it now" when you get offered French fries or chocolate or whatever and really mean it. However, there are many people who aren't able to maintain their "new lifestyle". I have no idea what makes or breaks this. I sometimes have thoughts in the back of my head that maybe some people are just lucky in reacting very good to WLS and don't actually need to watch their intake that much. They also don't live in the gym. When you browse around the board you're going to notice that maintenance calorie intake is very different in different people, even though their stats are quite similar. Nobody can tell if WLS/revision to bypass is making it easy (or less hard) for you or not. I sometimes feel it's like playing the lottery. You won't know to what group of patients you will belong before you got the revision. Short term weight loss doesn't really bring some benefits (someone correct me if I'm wrong please), however, one doesn't have to get to a normal weight to reap the benefit of weight loss. So many patients feel like "failures" because they don't get to a normal BMI. Yet, when you look at the studies actually not that much patients ever get down to a normal BMI. And sh*t on "eliminating carbs". Like really take a big dump on it. (Years ago we should eliminate all fats, now it's carbs. I wonder what the future will bring.) -
How can you be successful long-term with WLS if you’ve always failed
meggs353 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I’ve read over and over again that WLS is not a magic bullet. It takes dedicated, sustained lifestyle changes. But, if we can’t maintain those changes (eliminate carbs, low calorie diet, avoid trigger foods) before surgery, how can we expect to maintain them after surgery? I’m thinking long term here: 5, 10, 15 years after surgery when the magic of weight loss is gone and it’s just daily life. If I can’t stop eating now, how could I expect that to change in 10 years? Really looking for help here. I had lap band surgery in 2014 and I weigh 15lbs more than my highest pre-surgery weight. I gained back all weight I lost and more, and have the same bad habits. I’m thinking of revising to gastric bypass, but I’m wondering if I’ll just fail again. BUT, if I can theoretically make a sustained life-style change post-surgery, why can’t I actually just do that now? (I try, every single day, and I fail week after week). I feel like it’s possible or impossible. If surgery doesn’t make it easy, what benefit does it have beyond short term (1-3 year) weight loss? -
I had a lap band for 11 years also and starting having major issues with it the last two years. I lost 80 pounds and regained half of it. When I got it removed they discovered it had slipped up around my esophagus and caused a hiatal hernia. My surgeon removed the band, fixed the hernia and revised it to a gastric bypass all in one surgery. That was only a bit more than five months ago and I already weigh less than the lowest weight I got after my band. So far I have been pleased with the decision and haven't regretted it--other than wishing I had gone with the bypass in the first place! Good luck to you!
