  1. Hi! I'm new here and seeking recommendations on what I should be doing now, 1 month before gastric bypass surgery!

    Maisey's Musings

I have been giving away my clothes too ( 3X and 2x). I have a friend who is a single Mom and thought she would appreciate not having to spend money. I had lots of professional clothes from when I had a Management job as well as special occasion etc. I find it very cathartic cleaning out the closets. I did keep 1 pair of 3x jeans as a reference point of where I started and 1-2 of my favorite 3x dressy blouses just in case. I kept all of my hoodies since I like to wear them bigger and they can go over layers now. I gave away around 8 boxes of clothes so far. I am keeping anything 1x and below for now. Currently wearing a Medium top and size 8 or 10 pants. Not sure if this will be my lowest point or not - almost 7 months post sleeve and down 108 lbs from my heaviest weight of 264. I too felt like the clothes were a security blanket and they needed to go.
  3. I also converted from VSG to RNY with a hiatal hernia and GERD on 9/9. I remember being nauseated with everything after the sleeve. Nothing has made me nauseous this time and I feel I could probably eat way more than the 4 ounces I am restricted to, which concerns me. I have lost about 10 pounds since surgery (197 pounds on surgery day). Wondering if anyone has found it much easier to eat this time around?
  4. So yes, I lost weight and comments increased 10 fold - I get it no mostly do not mind. The hang up for me is that I do not feel hot. My niece said face it line up 50 or even 1000 women your age or 5 years younger and you are either the number 1 or 2 in looks. bi do not feel it though. That is what gets me.

    One week from surgery

Hey Evangeline, I'm in in my pre-op diet phase, too. Surgery 10/1. Started pre-op diet on Friday, so today is Day 3. Day 1 went ok, but Day 2 OMG!!!! I woke up with horrific headache, was jittery and had hunger pains most of the day. Better today though and plan to stick it out. I think Tony is right about keeping ourselves distracted so I intend to do that. I get 1 light meal a day in addition to the 2 protein shakes and hope you do, too. Best of luck to you! Let's Keep Our Eyes on That Prize!!!!

    First month weight loss

I am 6' tall, weight 298 at the outset of this journey. I lost 20 pounds in 10 days on the pre-op liquid diet (surgery was scheduled in a cancellation spot, so my pre-op diet was shortened from 14 days to 10 days) weighing in at 277 on surgery day. At my one week follow up, my weight was 273 - so down 4 pounds from pre-surg weight (24 from start weight). My doctor said all progress measured going forward would be from my initial weight of 298. At my one month follow up, my weight was 265 - so 8 more pounds in 3 weeks. Honestly, I expected more and was very disappointed with that weight. When I mentioned it to my surgeon he told me that many people don't see a large loss on the scale between the 1-week and 1-month appointments, because your body is in a major metabolic flux. Your entire digestive, hormonal and endocrine system is essentially saying "WTF happened?" and shifting around trying to adjust to the "new you" on the inside and radical change in diet. His theory is that this is the cause of the notorious and dreaded week 3 stall. So, be kind to yourself. Follow the diet your surgeon has prescribed and have faith that your body will respond in due time. It's hard when you are not seeing the big loss on the scale that you expected right away, I'm right there with you. Try to find non-scale victories to motivate and inspire you. I had a little silent celebration when I sat in a seat in the theater last week and didn't feel the arms of the chair digging into my sides (I carry my weight in my torso area). I just sat down and didn't feel like I had to wedge myself in. The chair didn't know how many pounds I lost and the scale didn't matter one bit in that moment. It was a little thing, but I'm carrying that feeling of victory around like a mental trophy.
  7. I bought a box (7 servings) of peaches and cream oatmeal (used one) and pumpkin spice pancake mix (none used).  I no longer want them.  The exp dates are 4/2023 and 10/2022, respectively.  I live in Manatee Co, FL.  Will take $10 for all.

  8. Thank you for this! You're close in age to me and you look like you got 10 years younger... here's hoping!

    Post-op blood thinners

Blood thinner shots once a day for 7 days for me after WLS. Oh, and I also had to blow into a incentive spirometer thing they gave me 10 times every few hours for 7 days. P.S. Now when I had my plastic surgery, I wasn't prescribed blood thinners nor did I have to blow into that thing *shrugs*. But they did put these cool automatic leg pumping compression things on (oh, I loved them) for 2 days at the hospital, and then leg compression stocking for 1 week.
  10. My surgeon sent me in after about 10 days to have a barium X-ray to verify the staples hold. He said the first couple days and then around the 10-12 day mark you see this issue.

Weight Loss Stagnation 10 Months Post-Op

@Paul.VDH No worries - OK, my 2 cents on "pouch reset" and "counting calories" - Let's look at it logically.... We all know you have to consume less calories than you burn - Otherwise = weight gain. At 10 months out, let's face it, you're bored with the "diet" and ready to venture into new foods. At least I know I was. For me, I simply had to come to a compromise with myself and knock on wood, so far it's working. You can do the pouch reset, and you WILL lose weight by going through the phases again - IF you're doing that to get back on track, then go for it. IF you're doing it to lose 5-10 lbs quickly and then go back to what you're doing today - It's a temp fix. No different than what many of us have done before on previous diets. Use the app to make yourself AWARE of what you're doing to self-sabotage and make realistic modifications from there. If you want something that's "forbidden" (cake, alcohol, fried food, etc.), have it - BUT, in a reasonable quantity - I was just talking to a friend last night who also did the surgery and we were talking about these things - Instead of eating something like it's the last time you will EVER have it again (food funeral?), have a bite or two and then put it up and replace it with something more reasonable if you're still hungry. Example - Last night my husband had country fried steak (one of my all time favorites - can you say comfort food!!) - Rather than have 3-4 ounces of it - I had two bites and was still hungry so I had a protein shake. A month or so ago, I would have eaten it until I was stuffed and then swear I wouldn't indulge again (and of course I would!). Drinking... well, again, I told myself that if I was going to fall off the wagon, I should make it worth it and over do it. I'm consciously working on enjoying a glass of wine (vs. a bottle) or a glass of bourbon (vs 1/2 a bottle!). At just over a year out, I pretty much eat and drink whatever I want. It's been an adjustment, but slowly but surely I'm getting where I want to be. Many days/weeks I don't track. When I find that I'm self-sabotaging (I get on the scale each and every day), I go back to tracking. Seeing it in black and white (both the scale and the tracking) helps me get back on track to maintain and/or lose. I may or may not ever get to my goal weight, but I'll be damned if I'm going back to where I started.
  12. leaks are rare and usually occur within the first day or two after surgery. The typical symptoms are nausea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, and fever. As Arabesque said, pains and twinges aren't unusual and are part of the healing process. Also, I agree with her about the lack of weight loss. Most of us leave the hospital weighing more than they did when they went in due to the IV fluids - I've read about people "gaining" up to 10 lbs from that. It takes a few days to work it's way out...
  13. I’ll start mine on the 27th with surgery on 10/11. Getting excited and nervous.
  14. I’m scheduled for MGP Nov 19. Can someone tell me the amount they spend monthly on the various vitamins, protein and mineral supplements I will on afterwards?

    Post-op blood thinners

My practice does 10 days Lovenox post discharge for lower BMI patients, and 14 days post discharge for higher BMI patients like me. I really dreaded each and every one of those injections and celebrated when that last syringe was used. I think the protocol used to be different, pre-COVID, but they mentioned that they'd seen an increase in unusual post-surgery clots during COVID (I'm not sure if this was just with bariatric surgeries - I assume it was just across the board for surgeries) and so they adjusted on the side of caution.
  16. Hi Everyone, My name is Emma, I'm new to the forums and I'm hoping to find some answers. I'm 7 weeks post op and have never had a pain free day since my surgery. Any time I eat anything at all I have debilitating abdominal pain after around 5 minutes, and often times I vomit all of what I consume. When I say consume, I'm not talking a vast amount of food, I mean around 2-3 spoonfuls of mashed food. I do manage to drink water (I don't drink much else, I never really have) and that stays down, but 9 times out of 10 I get a very painful and bloated abdomen once I have drank. Again, I'm not drinking in large quantities or rushing what I do consume, so I just don't understand why I'm having such issues post op. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience to what I am having or if there's someone out there who could shed some light on what's going on with me. I'm honestly getting to the point where I'm regretting the decision to go ahead with the surgery; its making my life a complete misery! Thanks to anyone who's read this far, I hope you can offer me some advice. Emma

    September Surgeries!

My condolences on your mother. I had my surgery on September 7 and I didn’t do a lot of research as well I just knew about it thru my sister having hers almost 10 years ago and it changed her life it stopped the diabetes that runs thru to our family. I was on metformin and And I had to start taking truliciy. And that’s when I got really scared and thought about my father passing away from renal failure. I didn’t have the problem with constipation because my paperwork said that I could drink decaf coffee and non-dairy Products. So of course I use that non-dairy creamer the powder and it made me dump so I was lucky I guess not to get the constipation but I wish I hadn’t done that to myself LOL. I hope everything goes well for you.
  18. I posted back in August about my surgery getting canceled because of a covid surge in my area. I was devastated and facing losing my insurance. As luck would have it, I got to keep my insurance another month and was rescheduled for tomorrow. I have been trying really hard not to get my hopes up, but I just had my pre-op appointment and so far everything is a go. I’m crossing every appendage I have that tomorrow goes off without a hitch. I’m supposed to check in at the hospital at 10 am.

    Post-op blood thinners

I had the VSG on 18/8 and had to do injections for 10 days. My hospital roommate had a gastric bypass and she had to do 30 days of injections, so it also varies per surgery. Good luck on your recovery!

Day 3 of my liver shrinking diet

I'm on day 10, but it feels like day 478,850,656. Although, I will say it does get easier. Day 3 was toughest for me, but after that I started to feel better and better. I think now the biggest issue for me is just being tired. I start my day at 4am and by 3pm I'm exhausted and often have to take a quick nap just to get through the evening to bedtime. Thankfully my family has been very supportive and we all know this is just temporary. It absolutely will be worth it! You'll do great!

    Post-op blood thinners

Post-op blood thinners are extremely common. Just like most things bariatric related, the duration varies from surgeon to surgeon. I'm scheduled for VSG next week and I believe my surgeon does 10 days. I would say if you have confirmed with your surgeon and have nothing indicating blood thinners would be unsafe (clotting disorder, etc.) the stay the course!
  22. I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there in the same boat, or who has gone through something similar. I had Lap Band surgery in 2014. Ultimately gained back all my weight and more. After the birth of my youngest daughter, I underwent a revision to Duodenal Switch in August of 2019 at 285 pounds. Over the course of the next 6 months, I also got sober, and ultimately, at this point, I'm down to 130-135, having lost 150 pounds. I was sitting at about 160 pounds in January, and have lost the additional 25-30 since then. In January of this year, I started struggling with dysphagia. For the most part, I would vomit solid food back up, no matter how slow I ate, if I drank or didn't drink. Protein, veggies, carbs, you name it, I tried to make it work. With Covid and such, it was April of this year before I managed to get an endoscopy, which showed a severe hiatal hernia (which had not been present at the time of my lap band, or my revision surgery). Had that corrected in May, went about 8 weeks of glorious being able to eat again, and then it was like someone slammed on the brakes. Back to being unable to keep solid food down. Worse than before. Many, many days vomiting liquid too. The day I had my most recent endoscopy I was so dehydrated the anesthesiologist ultimately had to do the IV on me, after 3 nurses tried and failed, even with ultrasound. During that procedure, they found that my gastric pouch has a greater than 90 degree turn in it, resulting in the upper part of my stomach being dilated and food being unable to travel back up, in order to go down. I'm having another revision surgery tomorrow to correct the issue. My understanding is it is just a revision of my stomach pouch, which with duodenal switch, is basically similar to the gastric sleeve. Has anyone else had a revision surgery for medical reasons, while at a normal weight? I've struggled to maintain my weight at 130-135 for the last several months. And by struggled I mean I've been trying not to lose too much more weight. I am definitely down to what I would call a healthy weight on my frame. I'm wearing a size 6 pant, small/medium tops, etc. Any problem areas are really skin based at this point I think, not weight. If anyone has gotten this far, and has in fact had a revision while at a normal weight, what was your diet like after surgery? I'm obviously going to discuss this with my surgeon as well, but all the literature I've been provided with thus far is for weight loss patients. The goal being to keep calories low, protein high, jump start weight loss, all that jazz. I'm just interested in how it will work for me, being as my weight goal is maintenance, not loss.

    How fast is too fast?

I am sure your surgeon knows how much you have lost? I had to see my surgeon 7 days after surgery. I lost a little over 10 pounds and I am starting off over 100 pounds lighter, so I would not be too alarmed with it.
