    OOTD

😆😆😆 Only problem is they’d likely be too big on you too. 🙂 Hit goal at 6 months then lost another 11.5kgs (25lbs) over the next 10/11months. Have been sitting around that weight +/- a kilogram (2lbs) since then - about a year.
  2. I am a 50-year-old man who struggled with my weight most of my life, starting with being an overweight kid. No diet or exercise program produced tangible, good results. At my annual physical in March I weighed in at 405 pounds. I take no meds, and up to this point, my most serious health issue has been sleep apnea that I was trying to handle with CPAP (mostly unsuccessfully). Given my alarmingly high weight, my doctor recommended that I look into the bariatric surgery option. I eagerly started the process, looking at it as a once-in-a-lifetime chance for getting back to normal body weight and gaining a quality of life I have not enjoyed for a long time. The bariatric program I joined requires that patients lose 10% of their weight before even being scheduled for surgery. Insurance also requires at least 3 months of engagement with a managed weight loss program. I was determined that despite my past struggles with diets, I will do whatever it takes to make the cut. I met with the program's nutritionist and had a very nice discussion with her. Then I went home, and threw out the materials she gave me (calorie counting book, etc), and ignored all her directions and advice. I dove into reading and research and started implementing a diet largely based on Matthew Weiner's A Pound of Cure vegetable-focused program. I had immediate success, losing 20 lbs in the first month (guaranteed, a lot of that may have been water weight held onto by insulin). I kept reading and experimenting, incorporating advice from Sten Ekberg (Master Your Health), Eric Berg, Dave Asprey (Bulletproof Diet), Jason Fung (fasting strategies), and many others. At this point, I am three months into my pre-op personally directed diet. I have lost a total of 70 pounds have a current weight loss rate of 1 lb / day feeling great COMPLETE resolution of my sleep apnea issues 120/80 blood pressure (was somewhat high at the beginning of the program) went from a size 4XL to wearing 2XL (depending on cut of clothing) 48 inch waist to 42 inch waist not counting calories no hunger or craving issues I am just starting to discover the research (a recent Nobel Prize-winning one) regarding Autophagy and its related health benefits brought about by intermittent fasting, and many other possibilities. Next week I am scheduled to meet with the bariatric program's PA, do my weigh-in, and (pending insurance approval) schedule the surgery. I am torn and in doubt. The last few months have been some of the most exhilarating experiences in my life. Gaining control of my body and my overall health in the way I have done in such a short period of time is amazing. The bariatric surgery option, which just a short while ago seemed like a Holy Grail lifesaver to me, seems full of pitfalls and restrictions on the methods I can do to manage my body weight and health. I was looking forward to trying out possibilities with time-restricted eating, and using longer fasts (triggering autophagy) to eliminate loose, hanging skin that might come about otherwise with significant weight loss. On the other hand, I still weigh 335 pounds and am nowhere near my goal of a healthy 200. What if my weight loss stalls out well short of that goal? The sensible answer might be to simply wait, see what happens, and re-engage with the program if it seems necessary to keep pushing past a stall point. However, for reasons I do not want to detail, I might not have this option after this year. Under these circumstances, if this was your only chance to move ahead with a Gastric Sleeve operation, would you do it? Any other thoughts? Your help is greatly appreciated.

One week post-op — feeling hunger

I was told that as well, but boy, I do feel hunger! I had VSG December of 2019

    Post VSG Regrets?

No regrets whatsoever! Had Surgery December 2019.
  5. FYI. I'm going to discuss poop! I'm a Registered Nurse x16yrs.  It's possible this might be to much information for some but I'm not gonna sugar coat my info/experience. I hope some find this much detail helpful.

Post op gastric sleeve 8 days out. The first day/night was AWFUL. I believe the majority of discomfort was from all the gas placed in the abdomen during surgery. Day 3 I started have less pain from the gas yet the spasm/pulling/tightness in right lower quadrant of abd. continues to this day (maybe a 4 on the pain scale w/ 10 being worst). I recommend WALK, splint your abdomen w/ a small pillow to cough/sneeze/laugh/try to have a bowel movement!

Speaking of bowel movements, my Doctor did not have me do a liquid fast 2 wks prior to surgery, only 24 hrs prior to day of. I was unable to pass gas or have a bowel movement until day 6 and that was with the help of Miralax on day 5 ( note I did take the pain med's/Lortab the first 3 days). I have no problem taking in H2O as I'm a water snob so this wasn't the issue.  FYI. Narcotics can increase constipation. I recommend the Miralax, I purchased individual dose pkg's which make it simple to take on the road/convenient. Bowel movements should return to pre surgery consistency if not discuss w/ your MD.

It was difficult to urinate ( minimal volume/stream) the 1st 3 days as well, I assume due to gas and swelling in the abd. cavity, 8 days out and the all things back to normal in that department.

No appetite, only thirst first 3 days. I started the Protein shakes my local health food store offered NutraBio 100% whey protein iso. 25 grams protein in one scoop and it tastes clean no after taste/grit. I started to notice a desire to eat on day 3. I found heating up Lipton soup mix or ckn soup from a can and straining out the solid bits extremely fulfilling. Now day 8 I want to have something of substance in my belly. I'm not sure if it's hunger or habit. I am still cooking meals for my family. I bought some ice cream last night and that made a huge difference in my attitude/energy/outlook. I've noticed many different diet recommendations throughout my research in regards to the liquid phase of the diet. My surgeon wants everything low carb, low fat, calories 700-900. That is a bit extreme for me I beleive. I've already gone back to work (day 5/modified w/ no lifting over 15 pds) and couldn't make it through the day on that limited amt of calories. I've been blending canned soups to liquid consistency the last few days, loads of yogurt, popsicles and yes protein shakes. Tonight I needed something with richer consistency so I made myself a small bowl of mashed potatoes maybe 2oz. I felt so Satisfied and afterward, the idea of another week on a Liquid diet didn't seem so disappointing/unattainable.

The most dramatic changes I've noticed to my body since having the surgery is the overall inflammation/bloating in my face/abdomen is 70% resolved, my skin is 90% clearer and I don't feel the need to take my bra off the second I put it on ( strange I know). I am thrilled with my choice to have this procedure thus far. I feel much better when I listen to my body and not just blindly follow the strict eating regimen ordered by my MD. I'm not encouraging anyone to go against your MD's recommendations but for me, listening to my body and making small adjustments is making this journey more positive/manageable.

To date I've lost 13 pds and it's only day 8 post op.

I was right there with you too. I HAD to have some carbs in those early days just to sustain my blood surgery and have enough energy to make it through a day. Congratulations! Sounds like you're doing fine.

  6. I had my VSG on 5/10/21. In my first few months, I had the rapid weight loss that is pretty typical, but in the last month or so, I have lost very little. I know that stalls are normal so I am not really stressed about that, but I have noticed some old habits starting to creep back in as my weight loss has slowed. I am doing less tracking, more grazing, eating bigger portions than I should, and making worse choices in general than I was a few months ago. So, I am here now looking for someone that is in a similar stage in their journey to connect with and possibly help me get back on track and keep me accountable. As I am sure many of you experience, my family is very supportive but it isn't the same as talking to someone that is one the same journey. BB

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

My team had me take one serving of Miralax in the morning during my 10 day pre-op and for awhile after. My pre-op was a 100% liquid diet. It helped and was very gentle.
  9. Surgery is set for 10/4/21. At this point I haven't had any coffee, alcohol, carbonated drinks, or caffeine in general for over a month. Too bad it just hit pumpkin spice season! I'm missing my coffee!

I have been a regular coffee drinker for 20 years atleast. Transitioning to no coffee is going to be so difficult. How did you do it?

I've been drinking about two large cups of coffee at day minimum for about 15 years. I also drank probably one-two cups of soda a day, but i've always drank a ton of water through out the day. I think what helped me was telling myself "the end was coming" and i stopped soda/alcohol first. I gave myself one last weekend and stopped. During that week I had my "favorite" coffees and said the upcoming weekend was my last. That Sunday i had my husband put all my coffee on the top shelf in the cabinet and I haven't had any since. It took about a week or two to adjust, especially with the caffeine withdrawal. I think it just helped me to space things out instead of stopping everything at once. I also drink warm tea that doesn't have caffeine in the morning, helps to trick my mind I guess!

    Insurance Coverage for Revision

I don't think most policies cover revision unless there's some sort of mechanical failure with the first surgery, or if there's some medical issue like severe GERD. And some won't even cover things like that - I have a friend who's had horrible problems with her 10-year-old lapband the last couple of years (constant vomiting, etc), and her policy refuses to cover a revision. Although keep checking around - hopefully you'll find one that does. A majority don't seem to - maybe a few do...

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Hello everyone! My surgery date is 10/8 - from the band to the bypass. I am extremely nervous for the procedure and scared of this to not working. I am vegan so the food options also worry me and not getting enough of everything I need. Good luck to all of you and I would like to hear more of your stories post surgery.

    8 days till surgery

Please keep us posted on your surgery. My surgery is on 10/8 and I have the pre-op class tomorrow. I am a bit nervous of failing and I think watching too many videos on how to get all the protein. I keep going back and forth!

    VSG 1st month

I am also discouraged about my lack of weight loss. I'm 64, so I'm wondering if age has something to do with it. That and total irregularity (no movement at all, in spite of multiple laxatives being taken!) My surgery was September 1. Before the surgery, I had lost 15 lbs. The first 10 days after the surgery I lost 10 lbs, but not a pound since (11 days). I am increasing my activity and up to walking /or stationary biking 40 minutes a day. I hit all my protein grams and water goals, and consume between 400-600 calories. I know people say this will get better, but I'm afraid my age and digestive woes are working against me. Any older people have trouble making this work? I'm not going to give up, but I started at 288 and should be seeing more progress.

    stuck at 50 pounds down

You can force it to your macros, but it just won't let you complete your diary. To the OP: the 25g of sugar is included in your 70g of carbs, so your total is: ( 70 g protein + 100 g carbs ) x 4 = 680 cal 26 g fat x 9 = 234 cal Total 914 cal Here's one thing, though: a LOT of products have started trying to cheat on their nutrition labels. One example is Mission brand "Carb Balance" tortillas, which claim to be 70 calories per tortilla. If you look at the nutrition facts, they have 5g protein, 3 g fat, and 19 g carbs of which 15 g is dietary fiber. (5 x 4) + (3 x 9) + (19 x 4) = 123 cal. However, they're not counting the dietary fiber, so they come up with 70. Dietary fiber still counts as calories! So make sure you do cocktail-napkin math before you take the nutrition label as gospel!
  18. My surgeon put me on a 10 day pre-op. I lost 10 lbs. plus 24 lbs since surgery, 34 total so far. Props to all of you. I don't know how you all could handle a long pre-op. I thought I was going to die in those 10 days. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

    No Stall

I didn’t stall until after I was in the “normal” BMI range for my weight. I’m in the midst of another stall right now - it’s very frustrating - but I was fortunate not to stall at all in the first 6 months. I think I’d like to lose another 7-8 lbs - going for 135 which is 10 below my initial goal - and it is frustrating to now be this close and hitting longer stalls. Not sure if it’s that I’m eating too much (around 1200 calories a day) or not enough because I am very active - weights 3/4 times a week for an hour and at least 20 min of cardio on weight days, if not, 45-60 on the other days (which is intense cardio - Peloton bike).
  20. I also never had surgery before, they were wonderful, I explained how scared about surgery I was and the nurse and anesthesia doctor were fabulous,. They held my hand explained they would be giving me medication in my IV and she held my hand, asked me OK where is your favorite place you want to visit and we were literally talking for 10 seconds and next thing I know I was in the recovery room with my husband and other post op staff. Completely wonderful, they did great work Sent from my SM-S506DL using BariatricPal mobile app

    Post VSG Regrets?

Same. I was able to drink 1/3 oz. (10 ml) at a time immediately, and now can swallow enough where I don’t need the medicine cups anymore six days later. I still go slowly and separate by 4-5 minutes but if I’m parched then I can take small sips every minute or two until I catch up. The last two days I’ve been getting 70-80 oz of water and 90-100g protein. It can be done (Isopure is your friend!)
  22. I had my original sleeve done in 2016, went from 290 pre-surgery to 195, felt fantastic, no problems at all, they even invited me to have my picture taken for the doctor's advertising! Then I had some personal and professional problems and managed to gain EVERYTHING back. I met with my doctor and he recommended revision, which I am scheduled for some time in November, currently getting my clearances. He said after my endoscopy we'd discuss whether to re-sleeve or convert to bypass. He said if my sleeve was still intact it would have to be a bypass, but if it was dilated I could choose. I had my endoscopy last week and the sleeve is indeed dilated so now I have to make a decision. Another factor is I've had GERD for over 10 years and take esomeprazole daily which helps a lot but I've heard it's not great to take that forever either. I've also heard that bypass usually cures GERD, so that's another consideration. I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who has either been re-sleeved or converted to bypass so I can have a better understanding of both options before I meet with my doctor again, Thanks!
  23. So I am 2 1/2 years out from my sleeve surgery. 1000% the best thing I every did. About a year after my surgery I fell down some stairs and hurt my foot. I wasn’t able to walk/exercise for 11 months. I was at my lowest weight of 203. Well of course I have gained some back. I am now able to walk but can’t go very long without pain. I have to fully concentrate on what I eat. I started a new job and they love to eat!!! I have gain some more weight back and have to change something. I have decided to do a 10 day reset just to get my mind right. After that I will be watching portions and what I’m eating. I was scared that I had stretched my stomach but did a test this weekend and I really haven’t. If you look at what you are supposed to be eating which is the 6 oz. I’m usually between 4-5 oz. So long story short I just need to make better choices. We can do it and I think a group will be great. Especially for us that are years out. I can answer questions and given my experiences to anyone that needs them.
  24. I had my surgery one week ago today. Here's what I've noticed: 1) I'm down 7.2 lbs 2) The pain was not so bad in the hospital but pretty bad the first few days at home, especially when trying to get up from lying down or when sitting up. Only minimal pain when changing positions now. 3) I took 3 total narcotic pills once I came home 4) The constipation is real. I did not have a BM from two days before my surgery until 5 days after. This was despite two kinds of laxatives prescribed by the hospital. I ended up needing a laxative suppository and Miralax. The suppository helped me go in like 30 minutes. I'm now adding miralax and magnesium citrate on a daily basis. Drinking my 64 oz of water has been helpful, too 5) Drinking water or anything was really hard the first few days. No matter how small I made the sips, I still had pain in my chest, and then it felt and sounded like a demon was in there, growling, angry because he had been evicted from my stomach 6) By day 7 (today), I can drink a full mouthfull of water or protein shake. It's easier to take my pills at night than it was, but it's still harder than before surgery. 7) I do have hunger, but I'm eating less than 500 calories a day, so that's not surprising. I only need to eat a small amount like 2/3 of a yogurt or half a protein drink to feel full, although I need to eat every few hours 8. Walking is hard. It makes my incision hurt a lot. I have walked around the block a few times, but I'm tired by the time I get home, and it's a short block. I can walk up the ten steps to the front door, but hills are hard 9) I tried to do a bit of work today, just going through emails and responding to them, but after about a half hour, my head was swimming. I'm glad I took two weeks off! 10) My parents were here for a week helping me out. They stayed in a hotel nearby. I didn't need them that much, but it was really helpful for things like laundry and the dishwasher and trash. And for company. But it was hard seeing them eat tasty food when I was just eating yogurt or protein shakes. I am still glad them came, because now I am bored and lonely
