    New Bariatric Patient

Hi there, I've been looking for April sleevers too...my surgery is scheduled for 4/18. My surgeon doesn't require a specific pre-op diet and says that they just don't want weight gain prior to surgery, but thinking about it anyway since so many others do. I've been trying out various Proteins to try to find something I can stomach. So far I like Syntrax nectar, and they have a naturals line with Stevia rather than artificial sweeteners. The countdown has begun! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  2. I got my lapband in July 2008 when I was 30. I started out like a champion the weight came off at a nice steady pace, I lost 80 lbs in a year and my skin tightened as I went along. I was so proud of myself. I even had a baby 27 months after surgery and lost my baby weight immediately. After having my gallbladder out in January 2012, the weight started coming back on fairly rapidly. I had gained back 30 lbs by the summer of 2013 when I bought my house. As of this morning, according to the scale, I have gained back 36 lbs since surgery. I lost my will power when I started gaining weight in 2012. Since then I have gone back to sodas, sugar, carbs, etc...I KNOW I'm not getting the Protein I need each day. I haven't been able to exercise with the intensity I used to due to a knee injury that hurts most days, but the main reason for the weight gain is the lifestyle change I made during the pre and post op process is gone, I reverted back to bad habits over time. I am scared to death of my weight now and am desperate to lose weight and get back to where I was when I was at my lowest or lower. I'm wondering if I need to tuck my tail and go back to my surgeon, admit my habits, check to see if everything inside of me is as it should be, get an adjustment, see the dietician, and suffer through the "one cup" rule until I am back in the habit. Easier said than done and expensive for the appts, but something must be done...now. I'm sad, scared, and embarrassed.

    Friends and Family?!

For me- my immediate family and a friend who had GB as a support system. My weight gain (mostly) was due to having rheumatoid arthritis. The high doses of daily prednisone along with IV decadron monthly as well as many other meds, the lack of mobility due to the pain caused me to 1) blow up and 2) created iatrogenic adrenal insufficiency ( no adrenal function- no metabolism). Friends and neighbors watched me grow over the course of 5 years. Then it was simply status quo- I was fat. But trying to explain that I was having GB to lose the weight and take the pressure off of my joints just sounds like an excuse. ( even to me) Therefore when asked about why I was having surgery, my response is simply- my stomach suffered horrid side effects from all my RA meds so they had to operate. Kind of the truth!!
  4. I have been without a computer at home for the last 6 days. I have only been able to use my office computer on the 2 days I work and only for a quick few minutes. I knew you were having kidney stones problems but had no idea you had gained over 30 pounds in 7 days. I am only on page 4 of this thread so I don't know yet what has happened. However I am reading that several people have suggested you go to the ER and I tend t o agree there is something seriously wrong ad hope you did get to the ER. If they still haven't found out what is wrong I hope and pray that they do soon before there is even more of a weight gain. I wonder if in your walks something may have bitten you and you are having a reaction from it? Try a recall if anything happened during those walks. You never know! Here I am discouraged and upset over a 3 pound gain and you have gained ten times that amount. I truly feel for you my friend as 90 pounds gone in 4 months was a fantastic amount to lose and I was so happy when you had gained back your mobility to walk again. This is not anything that you do so please do not look at it that way. Once they find out what is wrong I know that weight will come off very quickly. Hang in there and keep positive. Get well!

    Wellbutrin?

@@Kindle - Firstly, big hugs to you. I'm so sorry you're suffering. I take Wellbutrin, and have for many years. It's one of the only anti-depressants that isn't known to cause weight gain in a lot of patients, and it generally doesn't affect sleep if you take it in the morning. I however take one in the morning and one with dinner and I have no trouble sleeping. I wish you the very best of luck and please know it will get better. <3

    Wellbutrin?

I've been taking Wellbutrin for about 7 years (I guess 8 come this fall) for depression. When I first started taking it, it really decreased my appetite and I lost about 25 pounds. Then after I got a new boyfriend all of the weight came back... so many restaurants. But ever since that weight gain, Wellbutrin never helped me to lose weight again. Energy and motivation have always been big issues for me and I would say that even when I'm taking the Wellbutrin, I still struggle with them. I just know that if I stop taking it I get more of the depression symptoms (sadness, suicidal thoughts). On Wellbutrin I just kind of feel that I'm evened out. I rarely feel very happy and I rarely feel very sad. I do have anxiety and insomnia as well but the insomnia started before I started taking Wellbutrin and the anxiety, I believe, is a genetic thing (same with the depression). I do take other medication to help with the insomnia and anxiety but I won't get too into that. Just wanted to mention that I do also suffer from those things but I do not believe them to be caused by taking Wellbutrin. My PCP has recommended I try lowering my dose once the weather gets warmer out, but I really don't think I am affected much by seasonal affective disorder. My depression is a constant thing regardless of the time of year - so I most likely won't change the dose. In fact, I'd like to start going back to a real psychiatrist so I can maybe take another antidepressant in combination with Wellbutrin that may help with the energy. And lastly, the Wellbutrin doesn't affect my sex drive at all. I have always had and will probably always have a low sex drive. People seem to have much better or much worse experiences with it than I have, but I'm not sure if that's because I've been taking it for so long.
  7. It sounds you know what has led to your weight gain. I recommend that you go back to basics and make an appointment with your NUT. Embrace the Stall! http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall

    VSG & autoimmune diseases?

@@shrinkingkimber I had to hold my Cimzia injections 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after. My surgeon wasn't happy either because of the higher risk involved. But everything turned out fine. Btw, I'm going to Remicade next if I fail Cimzia. I've already failed Humira. A lot of my weight gain also came from steroids. Good luck on your surgery! VSG & autoimmune diseases?

I have ulcerative colitis and am getting the VSG. My GI doc is hoping that losing a good amount of weight will help me better control my disease. I am on Remicade for treatment of my UC. My surgeon wasn't too excited about that but he has collaborated with my GI doc to come up with a plan. My surgery will be 4-6 weeks after an infusion and I won't be able to have another infusion until 4-6 weeks after surgery. I just hope I don't flare up! A lot of my weight gain came from using steroids a lot of the last 5 years. My surgery will be sometime in the next couple months! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  10. So my grief counselor has suggested I try Wellbutrin. Things have been especially bad for me lately because its coming up on the 1 year anniversary of my friend's suicide. We've also been exploring some buried emotions from my brother's death that I never really got over (apparently drowning them in alcohol didn't make them go away ;(. ). At this point I'm having difficulties experiencing any sort of emotion besides sadness.....most of my days are spent going through the motions and putting on a show for others and quite frankly I'm exhausted. She thinks the Wellbutrin will help me with the biochemical issues I may be having that are hindering my healing process. So I'm going in to see my PCP on Friday to get his OK for the Rx. So anyone else taking it for depression? How's it working for you? Just wondering if there are any weight loss/weight gain/appetite issues I could expect by taking this medication. Any other weird side effects? I've taken Prozac and other SSRIs in the past for anxiety and stress, but the main problem was I could not sleep while on them. Not sleeping was worse than the reasons I was taking them in the first place so I had to stop.
  11. Hi. Yes I went to urologist yesterday. They ran some tests and couldn't find reason for weight gain so they got me into see cardiologist today. They also taught me how to self catheter since I had been having difficulty peeing.

    Feeling Like A Failure

I second @@James Marusek on the walking and caffeine. I did both and it helped immensely. I actually was so terrified of going through caffeine withdrawal after surgery that I gave up my 25+ year Diet Coke Habit before I even had my first appointment with the NUT! I did it slowly, taking a full month, weening myself off a little at a time. First I drank less, then I drank smaller containers. Until I stopped. I still had another 2 weeks of headaches, but now I am great. As far as messing up, liquids are hard. You messed up. Its good that you feel bad because it means you really are trying, but let's face it, we have lots of issues to overcome and slipping up is going to happen. The only thing you can do is acknowledge your goof, IMMEDIATELY get back up and get back on track. The longer we wait to get back on track, the harder it becomes and that's what causes weight gain after surgery. "well I've already messed up so I'll just X." Don't beat yourself up, just get back into the plan. Mistakes happen. Its how you recover that is the measure of success. Good luck, pam

Wanting to compare notes and chat!

Hi I am 1-1/2 years post op. I started at 285lbs - 265 when I went into surgery and I am now at 170lbs. I fluctuate between 168 and 172 for some reason. I am still not at my goal of 160lbs but really am not too upset about that because I am very comfortable with size I am. Everyone tells me I don't need to lose more but you know how that scale number can drive you mad! Some of my advice/story/issues. Water! I have never been a liquid drinker and seems that no matter what I have tried I just forget to drink. I am having a REALLY good day if I manage 2 glasses - yes I know I am WAY below the requirements! Simply forget... I was never able to tolerate shakes. I managed for a couple of weeks on one but even that soon turned to instant gag when I brought it to my mouth. I have tried so many different types - added fruits/flavoring - held my nose - said prayers - you name it I tried it.. I am constantly fearful of weight gain. Even though they tell you not to weigh everyday - I do..And I almost panic if I weigh even an ounce more than the previous day. It has taken months to get used to the couple pounds I fluctuate - but know if it goes over 172 I will hit freak out mode and probably starve myself! lol Find I am having issues with my teeth. They are more sensitive now ( I am sure Water plays a part in that as well as Calcium that I cant seem to remember to take when I should!) I have recently really buckled down on both issues so hopefully I will not have too much damage to them. Have always had great teeth so this is a major issue for me! hair loss: Have always had really thick naturally curly hair so I was prepared for some hair loss..Wasnt prepared to lose 1/2 of it! Fortunately it is starting to thicken back up it just always looks like I stuck my finger in a light socket with all the little sprigs! lol.
  16. Hi everyone! I am very happy to be joining this forum and looking to all the information and seeing everyone's transformations. I'm currently 30 yo woman and have struggled with weight all my life. I was born 10lbs and suffered really bad asthma as a child that definitely contributed to my weight gain. At the age of 18, Im 5'3.5" and weighed 301. I worked out for 2-3 years and changed my diet and managed to get down to 190. I still wasn't satisfied. Today, I'm currently back at 237. I finally decided it's time to consider weight loss surgery (WLS). At the age of 18, my doctor did not recommend WLS because I was too young. I realized that a healthy diet and exercise are going to be a part of my forever. However, it would be a dream come true if I can have VSG to finally be able to feel comfortable in my body. I have UHC and I live in Florida. Bariatric surgery is covered and I am required to do the following: 40 BMI or greater A psych evaluation 6 months of a supervised diet by a physician notification from my dr. I am having lab work done this week and I am looking forward to getting started. Can anyone share what the psych evaluation is like and what the 6 months of the supervised diet is like? Thanks in advance. Gigi. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. Just got back from the Urologist and they addressed most of my concerns (i.e. pain, difficulty urinating, etc) except for the rapid weight gain. They said there is no way I gained all of that weight from kidney stone surgery or by having a stent. They are concerned I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia which is causing Fluid buildup around my heart. So they set me up for an appointment to see a cardiologist tomorrow morning. I also have to start self-cathetering 3x a day. Yay! Fun, fun! LOL.
  18. I had the vsg about 2 years ago. Lost about 100 lbs and felt amazing. But thennnnnn life happened. I became a nurse, my father passed and I miscarried. Needless to say, I've gained about 30 lbs back. Has this happened to anyone else? We're you able to lose again? If so, how? I'm just really trying to take my control back. I want to stop this weight gain now. Get back on track. If anyone has any advice. Or success stories involving gaining after the vsg then losing again, please share. I'm ready to take my life back again, I just need help on how to get started! Thanks!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. I'm only 1-1/2 years out. I'm considered a success because I'm 80%+ of weight loss. I self sabotaged with alcohol and that has created a big stall though no weight gain. Why did I do Sleeve over other procedures? The Mayo Clinic was in year four of a five year follow study, and the results were nearly identical to the bi-pass with fewer complications. I also had a fear of dumping. Despite the stall, I could not be happier with the results, I climb mountains, run 5K's and have enjoyed the best sex of my life. I did recommit to breaking the stall, quit drinking and I joined the Memorial Day challenge. Let's see if I can get to goal by my 53rd birthday.

    3 days post op......

Hi. I just had a lap band removed and gastric done on the 21st. Tomorrow will be week and wow am i still sore. Since I "kinda" had two surgeries my doctor expected me to take a little longer to heal. I'm trying real hard to get the Protein in since they say it promotes healing and of course I need it. The lapband stopped working and we had to remove all the saline resulting in weight gain. So I started Gastric at the same lapband weight from 2010, ugh. My diabetes went away the day after surgery. That was amazing. Been researching full liquid recipes so i will post if i find something something really good. Glad to be here.

    Seroquel

I have lifelong major depressive disorder and have been on all kinds of meds. I've been taking Wellbutrin since 1995 and have added and subtracted other meds along the way. My long-term psychiatrist always said that it was very important that I sleep, which was a big problem. Benzos don't work for me (Valium, etc). The best thing that worked was a combination of Ambien and Thorazine. But who wants to take Thorazine?! So after a while he suggested Seroquel (just for the insomnia, I'm not bipolar or schizophrenic). Started at 100 mg maybe 8 years ago. Gradually worked my way down to 25 mg. Then my doctor died. In the midst of this, I had a VSG in Jan 2010. Beginning weight was 385, day of surgery 361, lowest 285, today 335. I've learned to eat around the restriction, obviously, but could the Seroquel be part of the problem? Meanwhile, I'm not sure the Seroquel is working as well for sleep. My new doctor isn't too happy to prescribe it. She would like to see me off of it because it's not supposed to be a sleep medicine, although she's always saying what a low dose it is. (200mg is a low dose; 800mg is a high dose.) So I don't think she'll increase it. Seroquel is known to increase weight, but she says the effect lasts about 12 hours, so since I take it at night, it shouldn't be a problem. But since it's not working well anyway, and since it might be causing weight gain, I decided to go off of it on a trial basis. Today is day 4. The first two nights were hell. The second two nights were better, but still not good enough to function. But I do feel less driven to eat. Do you think that Seroquel could be a factor in my less than stellar weight loss results? How long should I suffer through sleepless nights before going back on it? Should I try something else to sleep?
