  1. PO Day #14 -- down 10 lbs and still not very hungry. Moved into the "mushies" stage this weekend with no problems. Spent most of weekend cooking -- made two soups (hearty lentil and leek/potato) and vegetarian chili, and steamed cauliflower -- all of which I purreed and froze and tuna salad (mixed well with lofat mayo). Bought some hummas, babaganoush, and lofat cottage cheese so I'm well stocked with good quality, lofat mushies. Also bought some baby oatmeal and wheatena for breakfast.

  2. I am very much looking forward to Wednesday when I can eat some scrambled eggs & mashed potatoes, even though my Dr. said he doesn't like the potatoes b/c they turn into fat. I'm already looking at other "mushies" that I can have!! I could never be a vegetarian; I miss MEAT!

My surgery went very well. I had a breast reduction in 3/02 and that was my only other surgery, and a lot more extensive, so this one was a breeze! I took 3 days off of work and then was back! I felt "normal" after about 10 days with regard to the gas & bloating, and right about now my appetite is returning which is BAD!

I went for my post-op on Thursday, and Dr. S. said to come back May 13 to see if after a week of REGULAR eating (normal foods w/ strict measuring) I'll need a fill or NOT. It kind of made me mad b/c I WANT a fill, so if he decides I don't need one...well, it ain't gunna be pretty!

How are you doing with the liquidy diet? Have you lost weight? Are you happy with your progress so far?

  3. Alright sounds good. I am actually a vegetarian, but I do enjoy soy protein meats so I'll definitely fill up with the fake meat first, lol. Thanks for the info :)

  4. Are you really vegetarian? I am very much so and am having a hard time finding more veg friends.

  5. Hey just wanted to be friends since I'm a vegetarian who's getting banded in less than 2 weeks!

  6. right now its water, decaf tea and isopure protein drinks only b/c im a vegetarian and well ckn broth and i dont mix well and i HATE jello lol

  7. calories in vs calories out i dont usually post about diet and whatever because im a vegetarian with a wicked sweet tooth...i try to stay under 1200 cal a day and work out and burn 300 3 to 4 times aweek usually will lose about a lb a week..

  8. Well according to some random BMI chart I am no longer morbidly obese, I'm just Overweight now. So, yay! Also, on day 23 of my Vegetarian journey and honestly, I'm not going back to eating meat again. I feel like I've redicovered food again.

I could never see being a vegan, but congrats on your weight loss!

  9. My surgery date is March 6th and I am trying to prepare myself for the pre-op diet. I just tried to have vegetable broth and I hated it! What are my options as far as a meal plan?
  10. We have all these storms moving in and I find myself leaning more towards Soups and casseroles which can be very rich and fattening. Since I am a vegetarian (my family is not) and I am a from scratch fanatic (I only buy canned Beans and peas nothing boxed or frozen) I have been making my own recipes. This is today's. It is a white bean and cabbage crockpot Soup with leeks and other goodness Since I will be eating it for a few days I added it to myfitnesspal You could add broth but it would up the sodium I plan on seasoning to taste as I slow cook it over the next 10 hours. I just added Water for now. I add tofu to each bowl for more Proteins. I cut it in chunks and sautatee it. It gets too slimy if you toss it in too soon.

    Not liking meat anymore

I went through a phase where hard Protein didn't appeal to me very much. And certainly for the first couple years mostly nothing I liked preOp interested me either. You can do healthy vegetarian Bandster but it requires considerably greater research on your part.
  12. Is it possible to become a vegetarian with the lapband? I've tried high protein diet but I don't tolerate any meat well now do I have a craving for it....

    Not liking meat anymore

Sure, there are many vegetarians with the band. You just have to be very careful to eat healthy and get enough protein from other sources.

    Any vegetarians?

hi my name is amy and i was a vegetarian for 11 yrs, and to be honest it didn't do any thing for my personal health. If u like to cook u should be fine getting all your nutrition from plant sources and dairy. I personally did not give up dariy as it is in everything! there are some wonderful cookbooks out there! go to your local bookstore and you'll be amazed. One thats really good is "quick vegetarian cooking" nice, easy , and tasty recipes. it also is MUCH easier to find foods in the regular grocery store as a vegetarian now. "amy cooks for u " brand is fabulous, also morning star is an awsome brand they carry "chicken" nuggets and their "hotdogs" are the best ive tried. good luck and if u have any further questions please drop me a line. amy

    Yummy Fritatta

I posted this on another thread and thought I would post here as well incase someone has interest... Frittata recipe for anyone interested... Ingredients: Buy one large container of Egg Whites One package of baby spinach (you can switch out any veggies but this is my fave) Pam Spray Goat cheese (you can also add low fat mozarella) Italian seasonings (or any spices you enjoy) I buy one package of Jimmy Dean low fat Turkey Sausage crumbles. (You can also switch this out with turkey bacon, vegetarian fake sausage crumbles, etc) Preheat oven to 350 degrees Take one large frying fan with a METAL handle (NOT PLASTIC as this will go in the oven) Spray with pam pretty heavily so that the fritatta pops right out at the end Pour the bag of turkey crumbles in the pan (or your meat of choice) and warm up Then I add the whole bag of spinach which cooks down and softens up very well and sneaks in a good amount of veggies - (this is where you can also sneak in other veggies if you want - Asparagus tips, red peppers, etc) Then on Medium to Medium-High heat (you don't want this to burn the bottle) add the carton of egg whites which will cover the large pan. You may not have to use the whole container. It all depends on how large you want your fritatta and how big your pan is. It doesn't rise so you can eye this. On Medium heat, let is cook for a few minutes. You will notice the whole thing cooking except the top. At this point is where I put in goat cheese crumbles which end up melting with the turkey sausage and spinach and then I sprinkle Italian seasons all over it Put it into the oven for about 8 mins which will cook the top up and melt the goat cheese Once you see it's finished, pull out of oven and flip onto plate. You can then use another plate to flip it back over to see the pretty side. Cut into pie slices. You can then rewarm each slice for about 45 seconds thru the week. It's a super easy, super quick Breakfast and it's such a great flavor and way to sneak in veggies and Protein and being very low fat. It also helps with less waste of throwing food away because you can sneak in different veggies. The one above just happens to be my fave flavors. You can alternate different meats and cheeses and veggies and have a million different variations. This ends cooking with Lisa LOL

    Ginger & Soy Tuna steak-YUM!

So I take it that soy tuna is the fake version of tuna for vegetarians? I've heard of Tuno before, but was told that it is pretty gross.

Is It Possible To Be Low Carb And Vegatarian?

My old college roommate was a vegetarian and she tried to restrict her carbs to keep a healthy weight. She was not banded. She ate a lot of morning start products and boca burgers. They are pretty high in protein. She also ate a lot of beans with brown rice. Together they made a digestible protein that separate you don't get. I know rice is not possible for a lot of bandsters though. Hope this helps a little.
  18. This fri morning. I'm going prepared w/all the info. He asked me to do the research, so I did, as far as what my ins covers, doctors in my area, ect. I have a question, though. I read some where that if you have the realize band, you can't eat stuff like salads. I'm a vegetarian! Has anyone else been told anything like this? Thanks Kristine
  19. Wow! what a journey this has been. this all started 8-8-12. six months of classes, 2 psyche evals, 31lbs gone... got this pre-surgery diet. um, high protein, zero starch. ok. I'm a vegetarian going on 6 yrs now. eat salmon or tuna occasionally. not much on pasta, bread, rice, etc. not big on dairy either. you think I would be a stick person. haha. weight loss has been slow (not a gym rat). I'm excited and terrified at the same time. trying to keep up the protein, and worried about losing my hair (heard the horror stories). supplements? protein shakes? juicing? doing them all... any input from all you advancers would be greatly appreciated... thanks.
  20. Am also vegetarian and ended up with a weight issue by consuming too many bad carbs and too little Protein. Since being sleeved 6 weeks ago, I've completely changed my habits (as we all should) and now focus on getting Proteins in first with fewer carbs and almost no snacking. Current proteins include -- refried Beans, Protein shakes, Soups w/ added Protein powder (unflavored), eggs, yogurt and a little cheese. I'm down 40 lbs since starting the pre-op diet 2 months ago and really happy with that. I just started a Facebook group for vegetarians who have had bariatric surgery that he (or you?) may want to join -- I found very few bariatric resources out there for vegetarians so am hoping this will help us share ideas, recipes, etc: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1646059515642538/

Meat not so much - ughh

I am almost a year out and still can't eat beef or pork, white meat of poultry either. No Tuna either...I used to love these meats and have not been able to handle any of them...don't know if I ever will again.. I have started exploring new meats like rabbit, goat and different kinds of fish....Most people won't eat rabbit or goat..but I really want to eat my Protein in meat..lol.... so I will try anything almost.... I don't expect you to try them..it is just that there are some meat out there that is easier to tolerate then others..you have to explore or become a vegetarian...I didn't want the second option myself.....lol

    One week Pre-Op

Day two came with a headache but I just popped a couple Tylenal and I feel much better. I weighed 3.5 lbs less this morning than yesterday so that is good. The weekend will be the hardest. I'm a wino (especially the weekends). I'm also still cooking for the family. My husband is meet and potatoes and my son is a vegetarian (go figure). They would starve to dealth before they would cook themselfs a meal. The 12 yr old would live on poptarts and popcorn and my husband would be at KFC buying the bucket if I didn't cook for them. I did make myself some wonderful vegetable brooth using onions, garlic, thyme, bay leave, oregano, mushrooms, carrots, & celery. I let it cook down and strained it and it was so much better than the store bought and really pretty easy. I brought some to work and all the other ladies agreed it was a wonderful Soup base. More fun to come..... Sunday will be Laxative Sunday... WooHoo!
  23. I supplement with shakes for multiple reasons. I'm not a morning person and it's easier for me to make a shake in the morning. I made them before WLS and they were always some vairation of Protein powder+greek yogurt that I would add fruit, veg or nut butter to. Since I am vegetarian, protein shakes definitely help me get in extra protein. Prior to WLS my own person protein goal was 50gms or more. Now I aim for 70+. I doubt I would hit that w/o a shake a day. I've never been a bar person. many have things I can't eat such as artificial colorings, sugars and stevia. They are add too many carbs to my diet and I already have to watch that because of where my food proten comes from (mostly Beans and green veg). The bar that I do like and can eat like Larabars and Lenny & Larry's taste too good. Especially the cookie like bars. I don't buy them because I caould easily see myself over eating them. I keep 1 -2 Larabars in the car in case of emergencies, but I don't make them a part of my routine. However I am a homecook. I never had a problem getting in the kitchen and experimenting. It's what got me throught the all liquid phase and it's how I keep my Protein drinks from not being boring. I also knew from previous weight loss attemptd tht I don't lose if I eat too many carbs and I *really* don't lose eating heavily processed foods.
  24. vegan diet

I was vegetarian for a year until my gallbladder attacks got much worse last June. I'm 20 days away from my final pre-op appt and my dietician really stressed with me that I shouldn't return to veg lifestyle after having sleeve gastrectomy since I truly HATE cheese (except for provolone, Swiss, mozzarella, and Parmesan) but will have to get my protein somewhere.
