    4 yrs post VSG to RNY

    @GreenTealael Thanks for your post. How was your weight loss after the revision? Many have said they didn't feel any restriction like with the sleeve which was my concern. I am currently on my pre-op diet for this week, my revision surgery is scheduled for Monday Aug. 28th.
  2. From purée I was advised to eat 1/4 - 1/3 cup of food. (I was able to eat a cup at about 6 months.). So yes only a few bites. I could eat one golf ball size rissole (meat ball). It’d take me about three days to eat 2 scrambled eggs & the same for a single serve of instant rolled oats. I just portioned up the eggs or oats & reheat the portion each day. I did that with everything I ate. I still do this a lot 4 years out. It’s great I still only cook every three or so days & I cook almost every thing I eat. I freeze a lot too. My freezer is full of single serve meals for whenever I can’t be bothered to cook from scratch - just prep some veges or salad & reheat the protein & dinner is ready in 5 or so minutes. Handy to take to work for lunch too. You need to start including real food into your eating from the purée stage. It benefits your healing (getting your digestive system to work properly) & supports your learning to make better food choices in the long term & being more conscious of portion sizes. I never touched a protein shake after I got to purées. Have you a list of allowed foods you can eat at each stage? If not ask your team for one to get you started.

    Reheating food

    I reheat all the time. I cook one night then eat the leftovers for the next two or three nights. Just portion everything up into single appropriate portion sizes. My freezer is full of leftover meals I’ve made & frozen to defrost & reheat to eat at other times. (I call my freezer my local take away.😉) The only thing is they recommend you only chill/freeze then reheat the same food once but that’s for everyone not just bariatric patients (because of the bacteria in food & possible food poisoning). Maybe that’s what was meant?

    Oatmeal

    Oats are a great whole grain & complex carb to add to your diet. I was allowed instant from purée - just had to be runny so I made it with extra milk which gives extra protein - yay! A single serve sachet was three meals for me at first. The instant is more processed so goes down more easily in the beginning After a while (can’t recall when now) I switched to regular rolled oats because they’re considered better being less processed. Check with your team though to be sure because plans can be different. PS: I still eat rolled oats for breakfast everyday with a tablespoon of mixed seeds & blueberries. Funny thing is I eventually was able to eat a regular serve (1/2 cup dry oats) from close to almost 2 years out I think but then last year I started not being able to eat the serve. Then this year I’m only eating a half serve (1/4 cup dry oats). Don’t know why. Funny how our tummies works sometimes.

    Weight loss before surgery

    This is what I did to lose 30 lbs in 30 days before my surgery: I would have a protein shake for breakfast, another for lunch, and a hearty (ultra low carb) dinner. I started May 11th while I was still working (teacher), and kept at it until my surgery on June 19th. Altogether, I'd lost 32 lbs by the day of the surgery. The first 3-4 days are rough as you detox from carbs. By day 4, you should start to feel really good. Your mind is clear, your joints don't hurt as much, and your energy is up. You even get better sleep! A typical dinner while pre-op dieting would be 4-6 oz ribeye steak (cut up and dipped in A1) Or I would cut up 4-6 oz of rotisserie chicken and throw it into some cream of chicken or chicken broth. (Like chicken soup, if you will) I'd even eat a cheeseburger (without the bun, or course). If you have the space, eat a double! I'd been sleeved 14 years ago, so I still had restriction. My 16-year-old daughter was inspired and dieted a bit with me. She's doesn't have any type of bariatric surgery. She was losing up to 5 lbs a week just by cutting carbs. She would have bacon and eggs with cheese for brkfst, she'd have a shake for lunch cuz school, and she'd have hearty, no carb dinners as well. Detoxing from carbs REALLY helps. Drink 5-6 bottles of water a day. Have all the sugar-free jello and sugar-free popsicles you want. They're considered clear liquids. You can even start taking bariatric vitamins before your surgery to make sure your getting everything you need. Wish you the best of luck!

    Thank you so much. I definitely think an ablation is extreme. This is my second mirena. I haven’t had any issues before now. I have an appointment tomorrow to get some labs done. I’ve stopped the estrogen after 7 days. It wasn’t helping. I will give it another week or so and if it continues I will have mirena moved and hopefully my body will balance itself out. I will look more into water fasting. I think it may be too early right now. Again thank you so much.

    Sleep apnea

    While you are recovering, the nursing team will be monitoring your oxygen levels closely. I just had my surgery about a week ago and I have apnea. And I know a few times I would fall asleep without my CPAP and a nurse would come in and tell me that I needed oxygen and that would remind me to just put my CPAP on. You’ll be OK!

    I don't know if there is a proper answer since your doctor didn't seem to care either way. I did the bypass, I did not have to wear any compression anything, and was advised to keep clothing loose for at least 2 weeks including no abdominal binders. As long as you keep walking around to get the air moving out and are not just sitting or laying down all day and getting in your liquids as best as you can - it will help your recovery. I am not sure if your concern is for swelling or just overall keep things pumping - for me almost immediately after surgery my ankle swelling disappeared and had lessened knee pain. Now I have owned compression leg sleeves as I work a desk job and was having trouble with excess swelling in the legs and ankles mostly during the pandemic and just bought some on Amazon. I don't think you'd have to worry about a prescription since it isn't anything mandatory to wear. Just measure your calves to get the right size. Regardless of when I felt like they were fairly comfortable, it was impossible for me to withstand them for more than a few hours. I don't know how much walking you will be able to do in the week immediately following surgery as it's more of a hunched over stroll, but it's great to aim to get in as much as you can when your body allows. I would say as long as you have water and enough electrolytes you should be good.
  11. I am meeting with my surgeon in a week to hopefully talk about a surgery date. The surgeon wanted me to lose 10-15 pound prior to this appointment, and I haven't been able to! I have major anxiety about this and am worried he will choose to not move forward. Has anyone gone through something similar?

    September 2023 Surgery buddies

    I start my pre-op diet on Monday of next week. So we've been trying to make all my favorite meals and go to my favorite places because they just won't be happening again for a long while. Kinda like a last hurrah. My husband is sad that I won't be "a happy fat kid" with him anymore but is looking forward to eating all my leftovers. My biggest switch has been going from drinking my calories (country time lemonade all day every day, like a gallon of the sweet stuff every day just about) and going to the packets and squirty bottles of sugar-free. I've found it really easy to keep a little variety in my purse and I carry around a big water bottle everywhere now that I didn't before. I'm still struggling with the "no straw" and 30-minute rule of spacing things out. I'm afraid that is gonna be a lesson I learn the hard way. I just don't know how else I can really prepare. I bought a binder and some high-cut undies because I know I'm going to want slight compression for the ride home from the hospital as it's 6 hours from home. I've bought proteins of several types to try as we move forward. I'm afraid of failing. I'm afraid I'm going to make myself sicker than I've been over the last year and regret it. And I know this is supposed to be the gold standard fix for a failing nissen but it still scares me. The surgery itself is no big deal, I don't need to worry about that since all I gotta do that day is "take a nap" while the doctors do all the complicated stuff, hahaha. It's how bad am I going to mess myself up afterwards and how long will it take my husband to get me to turn back into "a happy fat kid". My husband is supportive but he's also an enabler and is afraid to tell me no even when I ask him to. And I get it because I can be a real horses patoot at times. Also, there's the thing of physical attraction as well. My husband is very much enamored with "curvy girls"... like he's never dated anyone smaller than me, so I'm petrified that as I lose weight he's going to lose interest between curves getting smaller and skin getting loose, I'm paranoid. One of the things I'm working on with my therapist but still weighing heavily on my mind. I just worry because I am admittedly very co-dependent on him. But life will be what it is and I'll deal with things as they actually come to fruition because I'm a terrible overthinker otherwise...

    My list of soft foods from dr is mashed Potatoes eggs pureed fish (I can’t even) puréed veg yogurt/pudding after the initial soft food week 3 (4 for me) I am supposed to switch to proteins @50% then veg or carb last im planning on mashed beans, mashed potatoes and eggs and yogurt for a week or two
  15. Let the airline know that you'll need help with your luggage. Since you're staying a few weeks in Texas you're going to have more than a carry-on. Tell them it is for medical reasons (get a doctor's note just in case) you may even want/need to schedule a ride from drop off to your gate, you know one of those little carts they have with a driver that can load people and luggage, you may call the airport directly to ask about that. An agent for the airline you are flying can most definitely load up your checked bags, just let them know ahead of time, since you are checking bags, my suggestion is don't bring a carry-on unless you think you absolutely will need something while in flight. In the past, I had to ahead of time ask for a wheelchair for my mom when she hurt her leg on a trip. Double-check the airline is ready for you before you get there and get there early in case they have lost your assistance reservation in the shuffle, so you do not miss your flight and you can relieve some travel anxiety.
  16. @hills&valleys hit the nail on the proverbial head about adjusting eating techniques. Eating slowly, taking small bites, watching portion sizes, avoiding food that is too dry or coarse, etc. is very important. otherwise discomfort or the foamies may occur. And yes your tummy may not tolerate certain foods, textures or flavours for a little while longer so food choices can be a little more challenging in the beginning. Difficulty with eggs, chicken breast, steak, etc, in these early weeks aren’t unusual. Six weeks is still pretty early out really. While able to eat soft foods then too, I could only manage my recommended 1/4 - 1/3 cup portion. Often that would be the protein only & it would usually take at least 20 - 30 minutes to eat. It does get easier & eating does become enjoyable again but you do have to learn the eating strategies that work best for you & your tummy. My tummy is a bit quirky & fussy but it was before surgery too. I still eat slowly taking 30 - 45+ minutes to eat what of course is a much larger portion size now, and take smaller bites. If I don’t because I’m distracted or not focussed on my eating behaviours, yep, discomfort & the foamies will occur.
  17. So, this coming Tuesday I'll be 6wks post-op and I still feel like I'm suffering when I try to eat. I've been having my popsicles and shakes fine, but every once in a while I feel clogged up in my chest when trying my soft foods. I tried having a quesadilla earlier this week that was alright, but today I tried doing a poke bowl since it was soft foods via fresh fish, soft veggies, etc, but it felt uncomfortable going down that it took me 30min to digest it and have it be comfortable in me; does that ever get easier? I can totally be fine with the full filling, but eating is still unenjoyable for me because of this. I was told I should be able to eat normally by now (or at least by this Tuesday), and I can understand that everyone heals different and I might need longer, so I was wondering how long it took you guys to get over this hump? And any suggestions to help subside the pain in the mean time?
  18. 11days post-op. I will get my two week checkup in two days. Everything seems to be healing well; I have been fortunate to be off work and able to lay down a lot. However, I have been able to work up to walking 1.5 miles per day. I wish I could stretch a bit more, but I want to be very careful with my healing incisions- I've got 5 of them to look after.

    Swallowing is getting better. I have been eating some sugar free popsicles in between shots of ProT Gold and protein shakes. I'm really looking forward to getting the go ahead for soft foods like eggs and yogurt in a couple of days.

    Something that helped me today was something I saw someone else mention in a forum... I cannot recall who it was. But they mentioned that they drink "proffee" in the mornings. As a fan of the occasional black coffee with hot chocolate, I made a version this morning with decaf coffee and a warmed up chocolate protein drink. T'was divine, and gave me a feeling of normalcy for the first time in awhile.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    And another update a month later. In the last 6 months I have lost 3 or at the most 4lbs depending on the day of the week. Pretty much bottomed out now I think at 138. I have lost exactly half of my pre-surgery weight which is totally mind-blowing. I am preparing myself for some regain in the next year or so (I need to so I don't panic when it appears). Hopefully the completely new wardrobe I've bought won't be in vain. But even if it is I can totally get another one size up and still be happy. I am still walking a LOT. I need to get into some strength training but I can't find the time. Any November 2021 people please check in - I am dying to hear how we're all doing these days. 😍
  20. I flew to Mexico Thursday, and had surgery Friday. Sunday afternoon i was on a cross country flight home. I only carried a carryon bag that i tucked under my seat, and was able to carry the little bit i needed. No real pain flying that soon, more fatigue and nausea— made the entire flight and threw up before I got in the car to drive home. (Which I also drove myself home). But keep in mind, i have a high pain tolerance. At home for the first few weeks- I really didnt pick up too much more than a case of sodas, just made my son move big things. I have flown several time in the past 5 months, and no trouble at all. My advice- if there is something big/heavier you want to take back home after recovery- mail it to yourself. Just have an essentials bag to fly with, you will be happier- and with baggage costs, it may be cheaper anyway.
  21. Immersion day at Mt Auburn was three days ago and I'm excited to get this ball rolling. I have my required appointments set up through mid-October and tomorrow I need to call my PCP to make sure referrals have been submitted. I've ordered some protein powders to taste test and one bottle of bariatric vitamins to get started. My preliminary lab work has been done.  Reading through all the material I was given, I've identified quite a few areas that will need work for long term success. I've chosen two for right now: planning my eating and tracking my fluids.

    Starting tomorrow, I've set reminders on my phone to have breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and evening snack at regular intervals every day. And I've ordered a large water bottle to keep next to me while I work. I find I don't drink a lot of water, but I like unsweetened hibiscus and rooibos iced tea, so I'll be trying to drink that. I've got a paper habit tracker to help me see how I do. Starting small. I usually set too many goals and then I go overboard for a week or two before falling apart completely and giving up on everything.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

    I had mine 8/1/23 and last food I had was 7/31 so 3 weeks today of clears, I asked about protein shakes and they said I could get the Ensure clear protein drink but no shakes! I can’t drink it because it’s so sweet it gags me so I’ve lived on broth and a lot of water and snowcones w/ sf syrup and popsicles. Three days ago I had cooked/frozen several large batches of Lima, Red beans, cream peas and bean soup. I had some of the bean broth bc it had a bit of substance and it seemed to be all that kept me going. I ran out and went back to broth with seasoning but finally started using 1 small can cream of chicken soup to a quart of chicken broth plus 2 cups water and cooked down with a bunch of Cajun spice. I go back to surgeon tomorrow and am supposed to be put on soft puréed food, eggs, mashed potatoes and yogurts per their instructions and I am certain that if I don’t gnaw my arm off by then I will come home and eat the best eggs and potatoes of my life 🤣 I have been starving for the last 10 days and I’m pretty sure my stomach has healed bc it growls and gives hunger pains about 90-120 post broth meals.

    When I was preparing for my original gastric bypass, my surgeon was worried he might not be able to do it laparoscopically because of my weight. He needed my liver to be smaller. He was actually “threatening” to not do it at all, unless I lost enough weight. I bought all kinds of Atkins shakes, and that’s all I consumed for 4 weeks. I lost 30 pounds. It was enough to keep my surgery. He also recommended clear liquids for the first week afterwards. I bought chicken stock and added red pepper flakes to it.
  24. As others have stated, in the early weeks there really is no signals so you must measure your portions. When I first started introducing solid food my full signal was a runny nose followed by silent air burps. At almost 6 months post-op, I have gotten better at visually measuring my portions and stopping before I am full; but I still get the air burbs if I eat until I'm full.

    Everyone's recovery is unique but based on averages, most people have regained the majority of their strength and beginning to settle into a new "normal" eating routine at 8 to 10 weeks. Remember to use caution when introducing new foods. Our tummies can often be disagreeable for the first 6 months.
