    Advice needed - VSG Failure

WoW!!! I've heard of horror stories and sure sounds like you had a bad experience with this process!!!! From the beginning the doctor advised me that this is a tool and you need to treat it as a tool. 100% of the responsibility was on me and I acted accordingly. So I am a year out and I only have good things to say about my process. Maybe speak to your doctor about a revision. But, I was also told that if VSG didn't work you only have about a 1% chance of the bypass working so those are not good odds.. Good luck to you and keep us posted....

    Thoughts on revision?

Interestingly enough some people never seem to lose that feeling of hunger. Nobody will ever know if these patients never lost physical hunger at least temporarily in the first place or if they're confusing "head hunger" with "physical hunger". There is no test that can differentiate between the two. Acid reflux is the devil. Bile reflux is the devil's big fat mother. I got two revisions because of these issues, both times associated with hiatoplastic because of hiatus hernia. My second revision was on 26th February and this time eating is more "problematic" so to say. The MGB seems to be more "forgiving" than the long limb RNY in some way. Or maybe I just don't remember several issue I had in the first months after MGB, not sure. In general dense foods tend to give me stomach ache and sometimes sit in the stomach like a brick and I hate this feeling so I understand not wanting to eat heavy/dense foods. It's always hard to tell via internet. Regarding the vomiting after dense food it might be that you're eating too fast or too much or don't chew well enough or a combination of this. However, this is something only you can tell. Maybe you could try a denser food, chew the heck out of it, stop after a few bites or set a timer to e. g. 20 min and take your time. Regarding the reflux you could play around with different foods. I'm sensitive to e. g. dairy, dry red wine and in general very fatty foods, with nuts and nut based foods being an exception. The combination of high protein and fat is the worst regarding my stomach issues. It also can help having a time span of about 2 h between last meal and going to bed. However, if your reflux is that bad you might consider revision to RNY anyway regardless of weight.
  4. How did your surgery go? I'm looking into a revision of my bag, possibly with Dr Gonzalez...
  5. So I have a bit of a complex issue. I had the Lapband put in 2009 and had great success. In 2015 I developed an antibiotic resistant port infection and had to have my band removed. I’m trying to get approved for the gastric sleeve but my insurance has denied saying I’m only allowed one surgery per lifetime. Has anyone ever successfully got them to approve it with peer to peer review. Trying to arm myself with as much info as possible.

So mad at myself for regain

I too am upset with myself after 8 years being sleeved, I’ve gained back about 55 lbs. However I remember I lost 120 lbs and I’m not putting on anymore. I have suffered w acid reflux from the sleeve and now awaiting approval for a revision. Hang in there....time for us to focus. To remember the why I have a pic of me at my highest weight.

    Advice needed - VSG Failure

Oh wow...I’m sorry to hear this, and I hope it gets better. Are you thinking of having a revision?..

    Thoughts on revision?

it's not that unusual for GERD to start up a couple of years after VSG. And it's also not unusual for people to have revisions a few years after the original surgery.

    Revision - Hair loss?

Well I haven't had revision but with bypass I have had the issue of thinner hair and growing slower...
  10. Well I had my sleeve done on 9/20/12; now I’m awaiting approval from United Healthcare Choice Plus for revision surgery. Why? Severe acid reflux which I never had prior to my sleeve. I’ve also gained back about 55 lbs. I know I just can’t continue waking up w acid coming from my nose any longer. Every day is the same. I try to stay away from trigger foods but that doesn’t stop the reflux issues as I can drink water and have problems now. My hubby is more worried about the revision than I am at this point. I just want to be done w the reflux. I’m going for the cardio test while I await the 15-30 day approval process. I haven’t been on here in a long time...I’m back 😉. Now I’m just looking up videos and trying to soak up all the knowledge while I wait. Fingers crossed for a fast approval.

    Thoughts on revision?

Try cutting your calories down first. Try 800-1000 calories a day and cut your carbs. Also, avoid acidic foods https://www.healthline.com/health/acid-foods-to-avoid first. A revision should be a last resort because even that isn't guaranteed! Sorry you're going through a tough time and I hope things work out for you!

    Failure

You will get very many varied responses, particularly as you posted the same thing four times. Doesn't sound like you took your investigatins further when your weight lost stalled. Have you now? Had an endoscope? Not sure what thoughts you are after? But if you want a bypass revision, talk to your doctor and get a referral to a surgeon and discuss your surgery options. But you one step ahead of where you've been for the past few years and its a start.
  13. I am a fairly private person too, no one knows about my revision. Just because someone asks doesn't mean you need to answer...ignore the question, change the subject etc.

    Thoughts on revision?

Maybe you should change your post to “Only looking for people to affirm my decision.” Get the revision, do you think that will change your relationship with food? You can’t tell me that you haven’t been eating or have been “sick” when you’ve regained most of your weight...

    Thoughts on revision?

Revision won’t change your eating habits. Maybe look into joining Overeaters Anonymous or go to a Bariatric Surgery Support Group. You’ve had heartburn and other symptoms SINCE the surgery and you are wanting revision 4 years later? That doesn’t sound right. If something was wrong with the surgery you should have gone back to your doctor immediately. You need to face the true issues behind your weight. Even with bypass, you will continue to have problems unless you address them head on.
  16. Had VSG 4 years ago. SW 285. Got down to 215 within 4 months and never lost another pound. My weight would go down 3 lbs and up 2, then stall and restart. My surgeon acted like I was crazy when I talked to him about why I couldn’t lose consistently. Started regain 7 months post-op and now I’m back up to 250. My hunger never left, I was hungry day after surgery. I vomit still when I eat dense or dry foods and therefore sometimes avoid Proteins for carbs to avoid discomfort and vomiting. Acid reflux is awful too. I wish I had bypass instead as I’m nauseous and uncomfortable every day either hungry, heartburn or uncomfortable. Thoughts?

    Revision time

Technically the size of your stomach will be the same (if not smaller) as I understand that the revision from sleeve to bypass is just the re-routing of intestines. That said, *technically* you will have at least the same restriction, if not better. The difference is the pyloric valve. Since the bypass skips this part of the digestive tract, "slider foods" will essentially slide through with the by-pass. So, as long as you keep to dense foods first mantra, you *should* not see much difference in restriction. But like @catwoman7 said above, each person will get a different experience. Congrats on all the weight you've lost, btw...you look great in your profile pic! +1 on this as well. I gained 6 lbs over a couple months (feb-march) and it was not as easy to lose it as it was a year ago. While before it would take 1-2 weeks with little effort, this time around took about a month with dedicated effort. So I can only think that a year, two years, from now it will be even more difficult....

    Revision time

I'm not a revision patient, but just wanted to say that as long as you keep on top of taking your vitamins, deficiencies are pretty rare. There are some people whose bodies don't absorb oral iron well who have to get occasional iron infusions, but most of us absorb it just fine. Otherwise, I really don't hear about deficiencies except for people who don't keep on top of their vitamins. I don't think that lack-of-restriction thing is universal. It probably depends on the person.
  19. Hello everyone, I honestly never do this but I'm beyond desperate and need to see if anyone has in the past or is experiencing what I am. I had gastric sleeve done end of Oct of 2018 and on 2019 I had revision done to bypass. I have suffered from GERD since I was 16 and I am now 44. The reason I mention this is because I had revision done supposedly because my GERD was causing extreme burning sensations im my throat and mouth. Well here it is 7 months after my revision and the sensations and feelings I had are back again at full force and even worse. I honestly do not know of this is even GERD at this point anymore. I am going to try to explain exactly what it is I feel. It feels like my mouth and throat are literally burned and scalded like if you drank something to hot. I also smell a burning smell almost all the time. These feelings progress through my day and get worse and worse as I eat and drink throughout the day. I have noticed chewing gum helps especially the mint type and if I drink it subsides for a little bit but then gets even worse. This contradicts everything about GERD because GERD is supposed to get worse when you chew gum or at least that's what my GI said. Also even if I go to bed like this it doesn't wake me up like you would think with the burning. I know what heartburn feels like dealing with it I was 16 this isn't heartburn. I'm miserable all the time. I cry myself to sleep because no one can figure what is going on. I feel like no doctors understand or believe me. I honestly have no idea what to do at this point. I've tried googling my symptoms and cant seem to find anything. As much as I love the fact that I've lost all this weight I honestly regret it. I want to feel normal again. To not be suffering all day and trying to act like nothing is wrong when I'm in so much pain and discomfort. Please if anyone is experiencing this or has HELP I'm begging.
  20. Hi all, I was sleeved 8/9/17 and from the very start I had issues. The first night after surgery I didn't sleep and neither did the lady in the room with me because I coughed all night in a raised position. Little did I know that coughing was a sign of what was to come. GERD !!!! A few days after leaving the hospital I was awoken out of a dead sleep chocking on acid that burned my nose and throat. I was given 3 different PPI before I found one that gave me relief from that part of it. I have had burning for almost 3 years now and have erosive esophagitis Grade D. My revision date has been reset now for May 22 ( 3rd times a charm) I am not happy to be doing this as the sleeve has worked out pretty well for me, although I know it must be done. I am 5 lbs over my original goal weight of 180 after getting down in the 160s this past summer. I would like to lose 25 to 30 lbs and that is about it. I am scared of all the unknowns and after reading the post " I Hate the By pass " it made me think about all the restriction I will be losing. I am also worried about vitamin deficiencies. Anyone out there glad they had the revision ?

    Hate bypass

Don't get me wrong but how much weight loss did you expect during this time span? Revisions tend to lose slower. Yes, I can absolutely understand the need to get back down with the weight fast but this is not a matter of weeks as you already know. Expect at least as much time to lose the excess weight this time as you needed before. And tell these toxic family members of yours that your weight and diet is none of their business. Might need a bit of yelling but it's worth it.
  22. As far as intestines, constipation is far more common for bypass and sleeve patients than diarrhea is (diarrhea is more of an issue with DS patients) Not sure why weight loss is slower with revisions, but a lot of revision patients have mentioned it...

    1 day post op

Yay! I'm glad your revision went so well! Keep us updated
  24. Hi everyone, Im new here as this is my second post in 2 days. I have a question regarding GERD. Im 32 been pretty much overweight all my life and the small time (about 10 years ago) when i was in great shape, i did not suffer from gerd. I also have a small hiatal hernia that may or may not need to be repaired. I do not take medicine for the Gerd, it really doesn't bother me to be honest. I have been reading that preexisting GERD prior to the sleeve can worsen. So much so, that many times the surgeon will suggest a revision to the bypass. The bypass scares the life out of me and i just dont want to do it. No disrespect to bypass patients, But I rather not surgery than get a bypass Studies can only show you so much and Id really like to hear some of your first hand experiences. Did it get worse, Better, same? Also, did any of you get the LINX installed? If so, howd did that go?

    1 day post op

I’m now 8 days post op from band revision to vsg. It’s been a major wake up call for me on the difference of recovery and wanting food. Just remember to drink fluids and it’s ok to be in pain I wasn’t expecting it to be like how it is . Good luck
