I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. What I meant was that your new stomach is so small now that you will feel sick quick, that's why I gave you the baby example. I gave you that example from my own experiences. I had my surgery two years ago, and when I drink one glass of alcohol, I feel very drunk as if I drank six glassss of alcohol. My comment was not sarcastic, it simply was an example. You asked, and I tried to answer it as simple as possible. BariatricMatters

IBS-D problems?
biginjapan replied to Hoping052017's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had IBS when I was younger, but it eventually developed into ulcerative colitis by the time I hit 30. I've been on meds (Pentasa) to help control it, which really helps, but I reduce the recommended dosage since it produces intense hunger cravings for me (not a normal side effect). Anyway, I'm used to going to the bathroom 10-30 times a day when I have a flare-up (which is pretty much always, just different intensities). Two of my favourite, very well-known terms are "rectal urgency" and "explosive diarrhea." So I've been on my pre-op diet for 2 weeks now, which allows for 2-3 Protein shakes plus 2 small meals a day, and is very high protein, low carb (fats fall where they may). No alcohol, no dairy, no simple carbs of any kind (carbs from non-starchy veggies are ok). I have to say it has made a bigger difference in my life than any of the meds I have ever taken. I am now passing almost normal stools (still a little soft) and have no urgent need to go to the toilet multiple times a day. No cramping, no pain. Have you tried a similar diet? I'm wondering if something like that might help. Because of my UC, I've chosen sleeve since it does not mess around with the intestines, which is important to me. I've done some research on the effects of WLS on patients with UC or Crohn's (sorry, did not check for IBS in general) and generally speaking sleeve has a better effect on the symptoms of these patients, especially those with UC. In any event, I'll also be curious as to how the sleeve will impact me post-op. I'll keep you updated. -
Tyenol / cold meds?
dyemond11 replied to sleevedviolet's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sick coming out of surgery! It was awful!! My Dr. Told me I could take Tylenol and NyQuil. I took The NyQuil but sparingly because of the alcohol in it which was my personal preference. Although I couldn't take both cold meds with my pain meds I was given. I had to alternate. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
I worried about the psych eval but it wasn't as bad as I thought. I found the questions to be more about drugs and alcohol and how do we cope with things. I've never had a drug or alcohol problem. Tell the truth. They will find a way to ask the same question multiple times and in multiple ways. That was my experience. I don't know if all tests are the same. I'm from Columbus, Ohio with Molina healthcare Ins. I took my alcohol/nicotine/drug test last week, I quit smoking marijuana 2 months ago, and my test came back positive for marijuana. I am around others that smoke marijuana. How long does it normally take to get out your system? Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm so bummed. My ins. coordinator called me and said it needs to be negative and put another order in. Last thing on my list.

This is my first post on this forum. I am almost 7 years post surgery- April of 2009. I went into surgery weighing 344lbs. As of this morning I am 236lbs, not my lowest, but the lowest I have been in about 3 years. I got to 222 in 2010 and then stalled. Fast forward a couple of years, I was back to a high of 265! I had quite a bit of early success- I felt that my brain was at least 6 months behind my body. They are now finally in synch, but it was not pleasant... I think this is one of the biggest issues that wasn't talked about in my pre/post surgery meetings. As I have become more active, I've had to have surgery to repair one of my very flat feet. Ironically, losing weight accelerated the disintegration of my feet. I've also had to deal with the ebb and flow of the hormones- not just from the surgery but the pre-menopause fun also. I've also dealt with some addiction issues- for a long period of time alcohol- specifically wine filled a void that I thought I had. At this point I'm in the gym 5-6 days a week, energy flowing better that it ever has, but emotionally I'm a disaster. Just looking for people to talk with about all the crazy that's going in in my brain. Thanks!

I think I'll just forego alcohol for the rest of my life. I'm fine without it. But reading the risks, I can't put myself in that position and don't want to. Be careful to those who decide to have it. Enjoy it safely for me. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I drank a small shot last night and it burned and ached inside of my stomach for at least 5 minutes. The pain was excruciating! Needless to say that will be the last time I do that! Has anyone had a similar experience? Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

Confused. (Thinking to back out)
sally628 replied to nb660's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I 'm only telling my family and one truly supportive friend. When Ive discussed this with friends before I was discouraged by the negative feedback. Another friend of mine who had WLS and has had amazing results told me that people act really strange. The most negative comments come from friends who are also big and have chosen not to have surgery because they are afraid of it or they don't want to change their lifestyle. Even when I was strict on my diet and was eating clean and no alcohol I had friends who made remarks like oh call me when you can have fun again. I realized that people don't want you to change from the role you play in their lives. If you are the fun one and always available when they want to go out and have fun, they are afraid that will change. I have no problem socializing with people without drinking and I can still have fun. I think it makes people uncomfortable when I'm not drinking and eating bad food and they are because of their own issues. Your true friends will be supportive. For some it just might take a while to realize that you are still you. -
You can but honestly beer is the last thing I would choose early on. The carbonation is a killer with such a small stomach. I mean, serious discomfort and bloating. For me, wine was a better choice but know that I didn't have any alcohol until I was 9 months out and had lost a majority of my excess weight.

It's better to abstain. WLS patients are at a higher risk for alcoholism, beer has a lot of empty calories, and it's carbonated to boot. That having been said, I've had a couple ounces here and there and it hasn't affected me. I'm very, very careful about it though. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App

Looking for people that had their surgery on January 24th or close to it.
lacylou replied to Misty Barnhart's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just got home today. I had surgery on the 25th.. Very little pain but the nausea is really tough Every time I try to drink I feel like i'm gong to lose it again. I'll power through cause I have to. If the nausea is only for a few days, I can deal, but if it is longer it is going to cause a serious dehydration and nutrition problem. Anybody just recently sleeved find they have an increased sense of smell? I do and it makes we want to puke. When the nurses gave medicine through the IV and used alcohol to wipe the tube I got very nauseated from the rubbing alcohol smell. Go figure! -
Who is doing everything RIGHT?
triplethreat replied to anonmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did very well. Water was difficult at first because I was so full from even the tiniest bit of Protein. My surgeon and nut actually customize the plan for people based on their sw, gw, history of weight loss, and eating habits. For me, there were very few restrictions... the one I'm still following is to abstain from bananas and carbonation; all other restrictions are gone. I gradually added in caffeine (one cup/day as per my nut), alcohol (maybe twice a month, one drink), carbs (less than 40/day, about to go up to 80), 100 g of protein (started at 60), exercise (every day at first, then vigorously 3-4 X week for 45 minutes), sleep (very important- this really affects your metabolism and most plans I've seen don't address this), Vitamins. Since the restrictions were fewer at each stage and since I came into this with pretty good eating habits, by the third month I was basically off the leash to do what I wanted provided I met protein/carb goals. I kept a glass water bottle with me and knew that I had to empty it 3X every day to get in the water (I still use it). I tracked everything I ate. I began by walking every day and then transitioned into running and biking. I'm no athlete but I actually like exercise now! My other tip is to have a good relationship with your scale. My surgeon also had guidelines for that. Daily weight for two weeks so you can see your progress, then every 4-5 days until the 4th month, then once a week... once you hit gw, once every two weeks. I wish that I had followed this protocol but I didn't until I was about 2 1/2 months post op. The scale can make you crazy! -
For all of you who are battling food addiction, you may want to check out this movie. It is on Netflix and when my husband and I saw it years ago, we ditched fast food, and looked at food differently. Also due to health issues I had we stopped all soda and began juicing fresh vegatables. It makes a big differece. It is called "Hungry for Change". Also look for "Food Matters". Also on Netflix. I know the food addiction, mine is sugar and I battle everyday (just like an alcoholic) to beat it. I often say I want to go to alcholics anon...and learn theit process...but.....they give out donuts!!!!!÷lol, I know it's not funny but it is and let me tell you when you are going through a tough journey...learn to laugh...it really helps. I waited a whole year 1/2 of doing research to make this decision. I am 57....I gave it to God. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App

Nearly 2 years update ..how u doing .
Sha0717 replied to Sha0717's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
April will be 3 years. I have struggled the past year and put back 8 lds and the year prior put back 7. I must make a commitment before its out of control. I have a goal of loosing 9 lds. That will bring me back to 150 at 5 ft 4 and age 60. My cloths all fit, I am at a helathy weight and feel good in my skin. For me its about alcohol. We go out and away alot and the wine puts weight on...I made a decision yesterday to begin again . I wont drink alcohol at home,,and only one glass when out. I. Back to recording my weight and calories and staying around 1200 calories avoiding heavy carbs. My first goal is 155. And then if I get there ill try for 150. It is a struggle. I at my lowest when I lost was 146. But Im 3 years older and 150 for me is a hood fit....any suggestions what to do about hunger pains...its difficult now. When I began this journey I had nearly no appetite that is not the case anylonger. It makes it difficult. I start my day with coffe. Balck...and a high protien shake...i then try and eat yogurt...fish low carbs...lots of chili,,chilken...steak...and low calorie low carb snacks. Diet jello and pops. But its so hard. -

I was sleeved on 12/14/16. The only people that know are my husband and 3 kids. I don't live near the rest of my family, but I speak to them often. I've already lost 34 lbs since I last saw them, and will hopefully lose alot more before I see them again. They will be surprised! Even now I have told them that I started seeing a nutritionist and cleaned up my diet, with little to no carbs, no alcohol and no sugar, and that I've been working out. That's all they need to know. When I see them and have meals with them, all I will say is that I eat til I'm full, as long as it's clean. Sent from my SM-G920T using the BariatricPal App

Occasional Mixed Drink?
Cape Crooner replied to Chris1971's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I stopped for 5 weeks before surgery and 10 weeks after then went easy. I was down about about 55 when I started up again and continued to lose at the same rate until dropping a total of about 95 lbs. My advice would be: 1. Count the calories in the alcohol. Distilled alcohol like vodka is 64 calories/ounce. There are plenty of sugary drinks out there that are over 300 calories each. 2. Drink plenty of Water and take an extra antacid. 3. Plan EXACTLY what you'll eat when you drink and the day after and stick to it. My problem wasn't so much the calories in alcohol, but rather the bad food choices that followed. I'm not going to argue with those who preach abstinence, but I know that's not me. The world is full of skinny people who drink alcohol every day. Study what they do and eat and create your own strategy for weight maintenance. Log and weigh yourself ever day and if things get off track, correct! -
Occasional Mixed Drink?

Occasional Mixed Drink?
triplethreat replied to Chris1971's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every plan is different. My surgeon allows me to have alcohol. I can't drink red wine anymore (which I used to love) because it burns going down. I can drink something with rum or vodka but tequila makes me sick (which I also used to like). If you are going to drink alcohol be sure it's in your caloric budget for the day and that you are prepared to feel the effect of alcohol much sooner. I seldom drink now because I can drunk so easily and because I usually don't feel like I want to drink my calories for the day. I know many people will write and say never to drink, but again, every surgeon's plan is different. -
Occasional Mixed Drink?
blizair09 replied to Chris1971's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I abstained from alcohol for a total of 9 months (my entire six month pre-op diet program and the first 3 months post-op). I had some drinks during a 3.5 week trip to SE Asia in late December (3 months post-op for me). I, of course, stayed away from anything with sugar. I mostly had a few whiskey and Water drinks and some red wine. On those days, I had mostly Protein shakes to minimize calories and carbs but to still meet my protein goals. It certainly isn't going to be a regular thing for me, but from time to time, it isn't going to hurt my progress. I lost 13 pounds on that trip, even with the drinks. (Just drinking Protein Shakes all day on days that I will have some alcohol sucks, but I definitely think that plays a role in making the whole thing work.) You'll get a lot of different replies to this question quite likely. Many people think you should abstain until maintenance. My advice is to talk to your medical team, get their advice, and make a well-informed decision. That's what I did. Good luck. -
Just curious about alcoholic drinks and how long after surgery before having one. I know beer is out because of the carbonation but I was wondering about other alcohol. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
