Pre-Op confusion
chelsea554 replied to ShrinkingButtercup's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After my initial meeting with my surgeon, he set a weight loss goal for me of 10 pounds, I think because they want to see that I am trying to change my habits before surgery. I went to the NUT at my surgeon's office and she has been amazing. We are slowly removing sugar and Diet Coke from my diet and adding Protein and Water. This is to get me ready for the surgery. Ask the surgeon for a NUT recommendation, it is likely they work closely with one or two. I would follow either the surgeon or the NUT that is recommended diet as they will be the experts when it comes to bariatric surgery. Also, it sucks that your PCP isn't on board. Mine is very supportive, which I think will ultimately help with long-term success. I hope everything works out for you! -
5 Days until surgery....Restless
Invictus replied to kashco's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have 10 days til my surgery. I too am a teacher. I went over to set up the furniture in my classroom yesterday. Got an early start due to the lifting restrictions after surgery. Keeping busy helps take my mind off food. I am fortunate that my preop diet is very low carb, not strictly liquids. Next week, I will probably try to do more shakes though because the protein sources I am eating are high in fat . Next week I am booked with preop appointments and workshops. Worried about the desire to snack during the workshops. -
My sleeve is scheduled for 8/19/15 my nerves are really kicking in. I found this and I'm excited there's more people out there going thru what I'm going thru. I start my liquids for preop on 8/4 any recommendations on decent tasting proteins?

Still Deciding: Need Opinions!
Amber Johnson posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a 20 year old female (going to be 21 soon) and am weighing the options of doing surgery while I'm under my parent's insurance. I'm 5'4, 310 pounds (BMI of like 54) I am still in college and would plan on doing the surgery either this winter or next summer. I graduate next spring so I would have the summer to repair from the surgery until the fall when I'd start a potential job. If i didn't get the surgery within the next two years, I might have to wait like 10 or more to build up my insurance at my new job. I am working on my degree in Elementary Education. As of now, I work at a daycare and in direct care, both physically tolling jobs for an obese person. I am asked constantly from both jobs why I'm so big and if I'm pregnant. Parents sometimes look down on me as not physically capable or not being a role model for their children, which of course I want to be. I want to be able to sit in a chair and not worry about it breaking. I want to be able to lay down and not have my neck fat squished up against my chin. I want to be able to be comfortable with myself emotionally and physically. I want to buy clothes at Target and other cheaper stores that carry cute clothes without having to hide out in the plus size section. I want to be healthy and not worry about the possibility of diabetes, heart attacks, or aches/hurts in my joints. Something, though, scares me about the surgery. I'm not sure if it's the surgery itself or the thought of not eating my favorite foods after. I know it's worth it and everything and that complications are a minimal risk but what if my sutures leak? Or the biggest fear, I end up stretching my stomach out??? Someone please help me out! Should I wait and figure myself out mentally or should I do the surgery and be healthier for my future career?? -
A few things. My surgeon said take ONE bite and wait 10 minutes. Otherwise, we get a logjam, so to speak, up our esophagus, and it hurts! That one bite allows our tummy to slowly open up to food, it 'primes' it. More moist food. Otherwise, it's like going down a Water slide with no water! Finally, for me I've learned my tummy/esophagus has a timer. They do not like me trying to eat heavier food earlier in the day - they just do not go down. It's like it has to wake up. I think of it as it has been unused all night, so I have to gently get it use to food all over again every day.

overeating like crazy
pammieanne replied to healthier&happier4life's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm finding myself doing something similar... keep thinking eat it now because soon you will not be eating this... I've just finished all of the insurance requirements, and they have up to 30 days to approve... then I meet with the surgeon and have my 10 day pre-op diet handed to me... I hope the insurance company doesn't take the whole 30 days because I don't need to keep this mindset where it is! Ugh. I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one Thanks for posting this! -
Another thing to keep in mind - you may not be losing weight but you may still be losing inches. Measure the following locations and measure them once a week to see the changes (it only takes about 4 minutes to measure all of these spots): Neck Around the chest (widest part) Around the chest (under breast for women) Upper arm (always the same distance from the elbow crease) Forearm (same distance from elbow crease) Wrist Waist (narrowest area) Waist (at belly button) Hips (widest) Hips (at the dip, if you have one) Thigh (same distance from the crotch or back of knee) Calf (same distance from the back of the knee) Ankle You may not notice changes in all areas, but on those weeks where you have no weight loss you will very likely lose a half inch, an inch, or more. One final note - women gain between 5-10 lbs every month due to our cycles, so if you don't lose this week, you may lose a lot next week. If you're tracking you'll see these fluctuations. And even women who are going through menopause or who have gone through menopause will have fluctuations though they'll be a little smaller in the 2-4 lbs range.

Ok...feeling back on track. Last week I had 1cc removed from my band due to being stuck. So after Christmas Day I decided I was going to go back on a three day clear liquid diet, then soft foods. Believe it or not the clear liquid was not as hard as it was before I had the surgery! Today I am adding back foods slowly. I get my fill back next week. THANK GOODNESS. :frown: I know my sweet spot and I want to keep it. So...on top of going on a liquid, I decided to take on a new workout routine. I purchased the 10 Minute Trainer with Tony Horton. It looks good on TV, but let me tell you....OUCH! Each 10 minute segment is kicking my B-U-T-T! It's like puzzle pieces so you do (3) 10 minute segments a day to equal 30 minutes. It contains Yoga, Cardio, Upper Body, Lower Body, Abs and Total Body. I promised myself for once in my life I was going to fully complete a program, so this one is 30 days. On the first day, I made it through----BARELY----then promptly cried. I swear, I thought it would be easier. I mean...I have been exercising on a consistant routine every since I had the band in May 2009. I use the treadmill up to an hour a day, I do water aerobics, Bellydance....etc. BUT NO....I am using muscles I did not even know I had! So today is Day 3 of the program and it's a small day. Instead of 30 minutes it only wants you to do the 10 minutes Yoga....I am afraid....VERY AFRAID! I will do it this evening!:w00t: I sure hope at the end of 30 days I will be able to report some serious inches lost! On top of all these crazy ideas I have had....I am now PMSing...BAD! And I never lose during this week. BLAH BLAH BLAH!:tt2: As the New Year approaches I have found myself reflecting on this year, personally and business wise. I guess all of us do. Personally....I am so very happy with where I am, I have never been happier in my life. I feel sexy, strong and beautiful. Business wise...well I am a Realtor and even though I had a good year it was NO WHERE near what I wanted it to be. This market has just got to turn! *sigh* So....with that in mind....I want to let you all know you mean a lot to me. I have gotten the support here that I needed before, during and after my LAP-BAND®®. I could not have asked for a better support team. So...until 2010! BLESSINGS! P.S. I am wearing size 12 jeans today....I feel so skinny!

Plus most insurances clearly state that the weight that "qualifies" you for surgery is your initial weight. So you are correct they cannot mandate that you lose 10% of your body weight and then deny you for being a few pounds shy of being "officially" obese. Good luck and I am sure things will go your way

First Surgeon Appointment Coming Up
BurNingBriDget replied to mrz.mott's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have my first appointment on March 1st and I also have United Healthcare. My nurse is super nice and gave me a lit of things I have to do. Also I ready scheduled my psychological evaluation, support group attendance, and my nutrition visit will be scheduled for after I see the doctor on my first visit. Like you I have been over weight my whole life and I am ready for a change. I have had my kids and married my love and want to be proud of my life instead of hiding behind everything because of my weight. My current weight is 230 lbs but my highest was after I gave birth to my daughter and that was 260. I lost 30 lbs by essentially starving myself for months and now can only eat very little without gaining 5-10 lbs. I also have high cholesterol and horrible sciatica, trouble sleeping, plus hypothyroidism. I feel like I am a walking time bomb!!!! Please keep us posted Bridget Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Just starting my weight loss surgery journey!
Half of Bri replied to danaski's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first meeting with my surgeon was 10/2 ; my surgery date is 12/2. I had about a month between my seminar and the meeting with my surgeon, so I got as many appointments out of the way during that time as I could. -
its day 2 for me on the 10 day liquid diet and I am full of energy. But the bad news is I want to eat just to have something to do. I'm realizing how much I use food to ease my anxiety. AnybodY else experience this? What did you do? Would love to here from anyone who has an opinion:)

@@Remmy75, is this your first surgery ever? The nerves are understandable. My surgery is scheduled for Oct 22nd. I have some fears, but I am WAY more excited about it than afraid. Anesthesia is the Best. sleep. Ever. I had wrist surgery about 10 years ago, and dang, awesome sleep. Any surgery has risks, but the complication rate is very low. Way lower than than the chances of dying from your excess weight. Stop focusing on the fear. Focus on the "I will be able to...". I will be able to play hard with my daughter, I will be able to reduce my pain, I will be able to tie my shoes without breaking a sweat. I will be able to... -
So Nervous, input appreciated
Boogirl6 replied to Gina.marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Gina! I'm going to Dr. Ortiz as well. My surgery date is November 16th. Are there certain things you are worried about? I've done a lot of research on him and the OCC and haven't really found anything negative. He seems to be a very well-respected, educated and wonderful surgeon. He's not the cheapest down there, but also not the most expensive. I think there are some threads on this site about other people's experience with him. I'm very excited to go down there. And no, you are not crazy! A lot of people hear "Mexico" and they think of chickens in the operating room in some dirty strip mall clinic. The OCC is top notch from what I've heard. Have you gotten on the OCC's website and watched their testimonial videos?Hi! Yes. I've been all over the website. Googled. Yelped. And your right I haven't heard anything negative. I think it's a great choice, I just need some confirmation and you have given it to me. Thank you. When did you schedule? I was wondering how long I would have to wait after I scheduled. Thanks so much for your input! I just scheduled a few weeks ago and sent in my deposit. My health insurance, of course, would not pay for the surgery, and paying out of pocket was ridiculous. The coordinator I've been working with at OCC, Ora, said that you can schedule anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months out. Do you have a date in mind? I decided to set my date for Nov. 16th, right before the holidays. That's a time that I normally put on a good 10-15 pounds. Have you done searches on this site for Dr. Ortiz? I think you can even just search "Mexico" and find a lot of good info like what to expect when getting picked up at the airport, crossing the border, the hotel, what to bring with you, etc. I'm already making lists! I've also found a few videos on YouTube that were helpful. Do you have someone who can go with you? -

Endoscopy (EGD) slowly freaking out here
Jennifer Ostermeier posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In June when they hospital ran my initial blood work I came back positive for h. pylori which wasn't surprising because I lived in 3rd world countries for a few years in my younger days. It is actually pretty common here as well. I was put on an 10 day intensive round of antibiotics. Yesterday I had my endoscopy and the results were that my esophagus was normal, but that there was erethematous mucosa in the incisura, antrum and perpyolric region of the stomach that was biopsied. In my mind my friends, I have catapulted myself into full blown stomach cancer. So, once I back myself off of that ledge, what does this mean for surgery? I have no idea and of course have to wait for pathology. I just have no idea what this all means. Is this something that could stop getting the sleeve permanently? Anyone else out there with a similar story? -
international travel post op
trekker954 replied to borg/assimilated's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
its so crazy the different responses. I told my surgeon I have a work trip to China the last week in February and it was important I know how long after surgery I can fly/travel. He said 10 days. That answer kind of shocked me, I'd like at least a month, although I think the liquid diet would be far easier to deal with in China than blended or soft. Last time I was there, they served a lot of fish (not a big fish eater) but they could never tell me what type of fish, other than "river fish". -
Which Weight Counts?!
RLH7882 replied to CurvyCooper's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have to lose any weight prior to my pre-op diet that I will start soon. But every weight loss program is different. My surgeon said ok as of now try not to gain any weight, either lose weight or stay at your current weight until insurance approval. And approved 1/18. ???? Now the first weight loss program that I was on required a stupid 10% of weight loss prior to pre-op. ???? I was suppose to lose 25lbs. My insurance approved it but the stupid surgeon did not approve me cuz I only lost 17lbs. ???? sorry it's super long. I hope it helps!? -
It's All About Perspective (& Slow Loss Is A Success)...
Pookeyism posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
When it seems like I am not losing, or losing too slow. I know why, however, and I know now, understand now more than I ever did - why this surgery is so invaluable. I have issues with my metabolism that is quickly regulates to whatever calories I am putting in...and it gets very hard to trick it...My sis ter was the same but instead of the furnace banking itself, hers burned red-hot. At one point she ate 4800 callories a day and was still a size 0. We both caught a very bad flu once, I lost 15 lbs and was getting "you gos!", she lost 15 and was in the hospital. I need not trick it anymore - there is no feeling of being desperate to lose before I fail on my diet. I ma waiting out my metabolism, and winning. I finally decided on the surgery because I had lost just enough weight (from 1/2011 till 10/2011) that they could see the cause of my issues with my stomach – I had a tumor growing in/through/ and progressing out into my abdomen from my stomach. So since I was going to have to have so much removed anyway, and I HAD been looking into one WLS or another for a decade (lol), I decided it was time. Sleeved 1/2012 – will never go back to what I was, ever. The fat lady syndrome doesn’t help slow losing, I just have to remember to not let it get me. – I still am not “seeing” myself at the size I was (almost) not the size I am. That isn’t helpful at all! But I look at my NSV’s – and they are real. Squeezing into a size 12 recently made me dizzy and nauseous…not because I squeezed into the jeans, it occurred to me I could button size 12’s. I asked a lady I know (as politely as I could, but she is so nice I hope she understood) what size she was, because I was asked by a friend to “find” someone I thought I was the same size as myself, near my height. She is a size 20-22. I am a size 14, squeezing into a 12, and I see myself as a size 20-22. It's all good, however - I now have the equipment to play this game, and I win. -

Hi I had my 5th fill on friday afternoon and since then i havent been able to keep anything down, including fluids. I thought it may loosen up as it has done previously after a few days, but it hasnt and im in so much pain. I have a really bad burning sensation in my chest and throat and my mouth keeps watering like i want to vomit when i havent eaten and when ever i do try to eat or drink,i am vomiting constantly until everything is back up. I have never experienced this before, only the occasional pb when i eat the wrong type of food, but this is absolute hell. And being a sunday,i wont even be able to contact my doctor until at least tomorrow and then it depends when he can fit me in to when i can get an unfill. I have 6.2 cc's in a 10 cc band. I feel so weak and i have a major headache but the burning sensation in my chest is the worst. i tried to drink a protein shake for breakfast and couldnt even keep that down. any suggestions for what i can do to relieve this until i see the doc would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance cindie -
overeating like crazy
The Candidate replied to healthier&happier4life's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was scheduled for 12 noon, and the day before I had my last pre op appt. at the hospital at 8 am, which took all of 5 minutes. I only had a one day liquid diet requirement after that. I'd already lost more than 10% of my weight. As I was leaving the pre op at the hospital it suddenly occurred to me that I still had about 3 hours left before that 24 hr liquid diet was supposed to kick in. I went straight to pizza Hut and ordered enough to feed a family of four. I didn't eat it all, mind you, but I did my best. The really odd thing was even after that final food funeral orgy, I still managed to lose 3 pounds by the next day. Now at seven months post op and only 7 pounds from goal, I have no regrets about that final meal. I haven't gone off diet since, and have even managed to go cold turkey on any fast foods, bread, sodas, sweets, etc. I couldn't have managed that without the surgery. So don't be too hard on yourself. A lot of us have answered that siren song so you're definitely not alone. Best wishes! -
Pre-op weight loss?
