Post op concerns- phase two foods
Beachpalacetrain posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello fellow sleevers- need some advice and encouragement. I am two weeks post op and having a real hard time with the second phase foods. Soup, yogurt, and a soft boiled egg were “god sends” after being on clears for the first week. However, after “enjoying” some of those for the first few days, I now find myself having an aversion to all of them. Just the site and thought of protein shakes, yogurt, eggs and soup makes me nauseous. Even sipping water, something that I always did prior to surgery, doesn’t interest me. Is this normal?? Have my taste buds gone through some transition along with the surgery? I’m staying the course and trying to consume at least 70-90 g of protein, but it is real difficult!!!! any advice? Is this just temporary?? Will it all change once mushy foods are allowed? Yes, weight is coming off but it sucks in there process. Thanks for you help and advice. -
Yeah, I drink hot liquids before eating anthing with a thicker consistancy thn yogurt. Usually at breakfast and lunch. Sometimes I have to do this in the evening too, especially if my hands are feet or swollen (guess that means everything else is retaining water too?) Anyway, I told my nutritionist about it today, and as long as I'm not eatting too much she thinks it's okay. Ideally they want you to wait 30 minutes after drinking to eat. She doesn't think I"m too tight, since I can eat solids if I eat slowly enough and chew chew chew.

Never imagined the difficulty....
clk replied to Momof5boys's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It stinks, doesn't it? I mean, we had surgery so we could eat less but I think deep down, we expect that we'll eat less of things we enjoy the same way while reaping the benefits of the weight loss! I wish! There are some folks that never have the taste change or have finicky sleeves but so many more of us go through exactly this phase. And iegal is exactly right: hang in there and it will pass. I did not really enjoy a meal until more than a year out. But before that I did get to a point where eating wasn't such a chore. I hated eating. And I developed lactose intolerance, so my "easy" Protein foods like yogurt and cottage cheese stopped being options early on. It was miserable. But it does come back. Your tastes change and your standards get higher but you'll find yourself genuinely enjoying your tiny portion of a meal at some point. I can't say when, but it really will happen. There are a few things you can do in the meantime. One, keep trying new Vitamins. Gummy vites are not the ideal but if that's what you can keep down right now, take those (and your other supplements) until you can handle the other ones. The multi that finally worked for me was a chewable prenatal Vitamin that I started taking more than a year before I got pregnant. I think it was the sixth or seventh multi I'd tried and it was the first one that didn't give me hours of nausea after taking it. Two, do not force yourself to drink a protein you hate. Keep trying new ones until you find the one you like. There is one out there if you try hard enough! I cannot even begin to count how many times I changed protein powders. The only brand that has hung in there the entire time and tasted good to me is the Syntrax nectar - I like the chocolate, vanilla, Cappuccino and unflavored versions. It's the only unflavored I've had that I really cannot taste or smell once it's mixed. Find what works for you. Find a site that sells samples so you can try many different things and track what you like. The Syntha-6 drinks by BSN have a higher calorie/carb profile but taste very good. You might find that in order to get to your protein goals you need to compromise with yourself and eat what works and keeps you happy. And mix with something other than milk - try almond milk, hemp milk, Water, tea, coffee...keep trying until you find what works for you. Make your diet as varied as possible. Eating the same, boring foods day in and out, choking down unpleasant Protein shakes and feeling exhausted by eating will only make you feel run down, discouraged and depressed. If you're having Soup, make it spicy or different in some way. Introduce foods you might not have eaten prior to surgery to liven things up. Do you like quinoa? It digests quite easily and is a complete protein. If you don't use it already, it's easy to use it in place of rice in dish you used to enjoy. Get out there and find foods that you can eat and enjoy, or at least not hate. This is a very normal part of the journey. It really does get easier. ~Cheri -
what is the big hype with greek yogurt?
takingbackcontrol replied to ********'s topic in Food and Nutrition
If its just regular yogurt with the Water taken out, how does it get more Protein? I remember letting reg. yogurt filter through a sieve to make "yogurt cheese" but I'm not getting how that can possibly increase the protein?? Not being a smart-ass, I really don't know:) -
what is the big hype with greek yogurt?
Supersweetums replied to ********'s topic in Food and Nutrition
It usually has 2 or 3 times the protein as regular yogurt. Plain it is gross, tastes like sour cream. I flavor mine with vanilla flavored stevia. It is also a lot thicker than regular yogurt. I always tell people do not eat it plain. But don't buy the flavored ones either, most of the time they are flavored using sugar and high in carbs. You could mix protein powder with regular yogurt, but not sure how well it would dissolve. -

How many pounds have you guys lost in your first 2 weeks after surgery
Gaylancsu replied to iHaveh0pe3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was down 15 pounds after 1 week and 20 after 2 and nothing more in the 3rd, in fact it rebounded a little but then levelled off and has been staying at 20. Frustrating in a way because I'm tracking my food and I've not broken 1000 calories in a day (which before would cause me massive weight loss). I sprained my knee 2 days before surgery and it's still healing (eveytime I think it's better and try to even do a healthy walk it hurts so bad the next day). I'm going to get an exersize bike this weekend to see if I can work on that and not hurt my knee... but yeah, it's super annoying (as I sit here trying to make it to lunch on just having a homemade smoothie with Greek yogurt, protein powder and peaches and feeling absolutely STARVED) -
Finally! Banded Aug 6
Rojasanoll replied to Rojasanoll's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I go back to work on Thursday Aug 16. I had a long off time to adjust to the band and eating liquids/shakes/yogurt. I see my surgeon on Aug 21 and thats when I can eat some foods rather than liquids. My healing is almost completed. Ive been walking more and more getting use to exercise again. It doesn't seen like it was a week ago when I was banded,Aug 6. Be positive and keep the faith. -
9 days post-op yogurt and peanut butter???
gabybab replied to iliana00000's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I had a similar problem. I couldn't stomach any protein shakes. I ate high protein yogurt and drank fairlife milk. I divided the milk into 4oz portions. I also drank Campbell's chicken noodle soup broth only. It filled my insides and made me feel better. Good luck! -
Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Too Fast?
KevinL posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Is there such a thing as too much too fast? I Started my pre op diet on Oct 12, 2012, my begin wieght was 337, yesterday was my 4 week post op mark, and I wieghed myself this morning and I am down to 278, if i am not mistaken thats 59lbs. Granted I was down to 309 the day of the surgery on Oct 22, 2012. but altogether it seems like its a lot of lbs to loose in a short amount of time. I beleave I will slow down as soon as I can start to eat better, but as it is now I am not holding down much, I can do a protien shake, it takes about an hour to get down, I can eat some soft foods like yogurt and apple sauce but only about three very small bites at a time, then i am done for hours. I had my surgery done out of the US, for a couple reasons, first of all the bariatric surgen would not even talk to me because I take narcartics for pain, plus the local surgen wants 25K to 30K so I went out of the country (Mexico), The doctors and nurses were exeplery they were so nice and accomidating to our every need it seemed like, but the only problem is there is no follow up care which i would have thought that if you follow the diet like it says there should not be any problems, but to my surprise there are unforseen things that one just does not think about, like I think the doctor might have made my stomach pouch too small be cause it is really hard to keep anything down, but maybe this is the way its suppose to be, time will tell. -
What could your stomach tolerate week 1???
SolracSpree posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone. Today is day 8 post op and every time I try to "eat" anything other than Clear liquids my body seems to reject it. I get pain in my stomach and gas. As of right now my list of things I CAN EAT include: chicken broth, sugar free juices, Isopure (and other clear liquid protein) and Water. I have tried the following an ran into problems: milk, potato Soup, tomato soup, applesauce, pudding, milk based protien shakes. Did anyone else have this experience or is it just me. I see people who are eating eggs, yogurt, mashed potatoes day 8 and i'm a little concerned. I dared to eat eggs yesterday. HA! pain like you wouldn't believe, wont be doing that again anytime soon! -

1/2 Cup limit?
happymama2014 replied to brown eyed gal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wondering if that's part of the problem I've been having if I put into many ounces but my body didn't really tell me not to. It hurts when I eat yogurt or applesauce so I'm gonna have to talk to dr???? -
I had surgery on Monday, so until this morning I was only in Clear liquids (broth, Water, crystal light, etc.) This mining I started phase 2: Protein shakes, ff Greek yogurt, cream of wheat, sf/ff pudding, sf/ff Jello.

6.5 pounds in 4 days!
kayshabear replied to OhHeyMarina's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@OhHeyMarina I was only told to make sure I am getting 70-90 grams of Protein. The way I have been doing it is I just have 3 shakes a day (1 for each of my main meals) and then 1 AM snack and 1 PM snack in between each of those meals of either yogurt or SF pudding. Of course I am drinking LOTS of Water all day as well! I have been using the Syntrax nectar protein line, and my favorite is the chocolate Truffle Protein powder flavor. I LOVE it. I have tried many different brands before, and this is the one my sister found and stuck with after her surgery over a year ago and is also my favorite. I didn't care for the Premier Protein Shakes honestly, at least not for me. I tried the broth but the kinds I found at my local grocery stores were NOT good on their own... can't do the broth thing. So I am pretty limited on the variety of things I have in my day but overall I don't feel hungry and I am hitting my protein requirements everyday doing that I keep track of it on my fitbit account. -
I guess I could talk to my nut about this but is the nutritional value in greek yogurt better than regular? Suppose that both kinds are fat free and sugar free what is the difference? Plain greek yogurt (without fresh fruit) makes me wanna gag so I have stayed away from it. It also wasnt until recently that it was a big deal.

what is the big hype with greek yogurt?
WorkItOutWoman replied to ********'s topic in Food and Nutrition
In the beginning adding protein to regular yogurt is fine but when you get to the point where you want to lower your calories and stay full adding 100+ calories to regular yogurt won't make much sense. -

Ms.AntiBand replied to ********'s topic in Food and Nutrition
There are many regular yogurts that are high in protein too. Just have to shop around -
I mix like 1/8 Special K protein or a dozen chopped up almonds in my Greek yogurt if I'm needing crunch. I get bored with it if I try to eat it plain day after day.

Is she getting all these fills and unfills done under fluoro? Have slips, erosion, and various band complications been ruled out? Something isn't right here, it takes a LOT of calories just to maintain a 130kg body, probably 3000 calories daily. If she is only eating tea, Water, yogurt, and thin soup she can't be getting more than 1000 calories daily and you explain she has no active thyroid issues going. Something isn't right. Also, two slips... usually that is from PBing too much or pouch packing. If she is only drinking her food, what is she PBing on? She needs to see her doc.

4 Months = 100 Pounds Lost! God Is Good!

I forgot about Dannon Lite Yogurt! LOL I eat that regularly also! :-) -
Siggi's is my favorite brand Mango Jalapeno is my favorite when I can find it, followed by Orange Ginger and Coconut. Skyr is also the name for the style of yogurt. If you are looking to try new kinds of yogurt also look at the Noosa brand, their stuff is really good albeit not quite as protein dense as some others.

Ok. I'm not complaining. I'm not saying that I cant do the preop diet. I'm not lamenting about not being able to go without good because I need bacon and chocolate. What I AM saying is this: since so many surgeons all have a different PRE op diet, is it safe to assume that I can pick another strict preop diet? Especially If I do it for 2 weeks vs the 1 that is required for my bmi. I was choosing between 2 different surgeons. The other surgeon gave me a choice between 2 weeks low fat low carb or 4 days of only yogurt. This surgeon I chose says one week of shake Shake 4 oz lean Protein Shake if needed Metamucil for hunger What if I were to add super low carb low fat Proteins to this plan? Say Shake Egg whites Shake Tuna Shake Ya think? I'm not looking for ways to break rules. I'm just remembering my hcg days where I was eating 500 calories a day, and was sure I'd be in the hospital after day 4. i found myself on the floor thinking about orange juiced and shaking and woth serious fatigue that left me on the floor. I have 6 kids to take care of. Stairs to climb etc. I still have about 4-5 weeks until I need to start. I'd like to plan ahead a little though.
