Issues hitting protein goal, six weeks out.
renjenn replied to Ellf's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think they give you high goals so you try as hard as you can to reach them. My protein goal was 90 grams. Yesterday was the first day I actually hit that. Dr told me drink 3 shakes a day and then other foods to get that 90 g. My calorie goal is supposed to be 1500. hah! and my nurse practitioner last week told me to at least try for 1200. I barely get 700. I feel like i'm always eating. The high protein things I have are turkey, tuna won't go down well. Protein shakes, peanut butter and my new favorite thing is low-fat string cheese. It is small but has 7 g of protein. Lowfat ricotta cheese with low sodium marinara has about 10g in a half cup. Oikos triple zero yogurt has 15g. if I want pudding or applesauce I mix unflavored protein so it isn't empty calories. All my food has to have a protein-purpose. -
Issues hitting protein goal, six weeks out.

I wasn't able to hit my protein goals until 4 months out because of limited food intake and the shakes make me sick. Don't stress if you aren't getting there just yet. You're only 6 weeks out! My surgeon said I can rely on the shakes (which I can't have sooooo) even up to a year if need be to get there. Chicken and fish still make me feel crappy. Turkey patties have 22g of protein and sit well with me. 1 cup of cottage cheese is also 23g of protein. That's a lot right there and cottage cheese is easy to get down. Greek yogurt has 8-12g of protein depending on the brand. Don't feel bad if you need to supplement with protein shakes at 6 weeks. I'm 6 months out and not supposed to be on all foods yet for another 3 months according to my diet plan (still limitations on complex carbs, rough veggies, and nuts). -

I am 10 days into my sleeve and this morning I have noticed my stomach starting to rumble which stopped after I finished my protein shake. Whats weird is how my brain is processing it and the best way to describe it is confused. I am eager to move to full liquid to see what my sleeve will handle with semi solids like yogurt. Is this normal at all? I have not deviated from the clear liquid at all yet. I havent felt that tingling or full sensation since day two when I first began to sip liquids. I can handle 8oz of liquid so far no problem but havent attempted to go beyond that. I have my first follow up on Thursday.

New to everything!! stall and sick

Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert, and the advice given below is based purely on my own experience and diet choices (high protein, ultra low carb), and may not be suitable for everyone. Check with your doc/nut/etc ! With that said, at first glance (to me at least) your menu looks like a lot of calories for being less than a month out. A rough calculation (based on regular serving sizes of your foods listed) shows you are consuming about 1200 calories a day. This sounds more like weight-maintenance level calories, and not weight-loss level calories. Also, another rough calculation has you logging in over 170g of carbs daily. You may want to bring this level down a little (or a lot!). Lose the cream of wheat, banana, sweet potato and the peach fruit bottom yogurt. Maybe sub your milk (I assumed you were using regular 2% milk) with Fairlife or unsweetned coconut milk. And easy on the avocado. You don't need to cut it out, just add in moderation. That is the best I can say based on what info you have provided. I don't know your starting weight/current weight/exercise level is, and these will also factor into your diet needs. Lastly, I am of the camp that believe it is important to meet your water goals every day and get a good nights sleep. Others have found that water and/or sleep have little impact on their weight loss, but based on my own experience, I found that both play a huge role. Oh, and get some exercise into your daily routine. It will make you feel good Good Luck! -

I've been eating: breakfast: either cream of wheat with a cup of milk or 1 boiled egg with a half of avocado Morning snack: either 1 banana, protein shake with 8oz milk, sugar free popsicle, sugar free jello, unsweetened applesauce lunch: either tuna creations with 1/2 avocado and 1 boiled or 1sm baked sweet potato or sweet potato with stir fry chicken breast (it's been pretty much this) afternoon snack: either low fat cottage cheese with peaches on the bottom or sugar free any options from above snack dinner: steamed salmon, stir fry chicken, riced cauliflower, Dall, steam fresh pasta veges, and/or sweet potato evening snack: either protien shake, lowfat Greek yogurt or something from above. *For those wondering what dall is, it's curried pureed lentils also im not finishing none of these meals other than the snacks and most of the breakfast items. today i start soft foods but I'm not sure what to eat. I get bored pretty quick and as you can see i ate the same things almost every day and i hated the pureed stage. i almost just went back to only eating cream of chicken soup and cream of wheat with the sugar free items above -
how has surgery impacted your hunger?
nevermore71 replied to Zemi's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My hunger never went away. But my stomach capacity is way down. I'm also able to eat a low calorie option like 80 calorie Greek yogurt and be satisfied for a little while at least. You just have to learn to eat super low calorie to your limited capacity and you should be fine. -
What is your eating routine?
Diana_in_Philly replied to iliana00000's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
First things first - if you wake up thirsty - you are thirsty. DRINK FIRST. You can eat later. Your body is trying to tell you something and you are ignoring it. Are you getting enough fluids in? If you were dehydrated, the answer to that is likely no absent an imbalance in your system. I understand the temperature issue - when I was first sleeved, I went through that as well. I found this after a quick search on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/asobu-Flavor-Stainless-Infuser-Classy/dp/B07F5ZJ9JD/ref=asc_df_B07F5ZJ9JD/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309830947124&hvpos=1o13&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7765904790629826689&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9007306&hvtargid=pla-582081574514&psc=1 You seem to be about a month or six weeks out from surgery. Are you allowed anything beyond puree's on your plan at this point? I loved Shelly's Ricotta Bake at that stage (still love it.) But there are some great recipes here. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html I'm 2 years out but still start some days with a protein shake because it works for my schedule trying to get out of the house quickly in the morning. I do love both eggs and yogurt so I ate a lot of those during purees. What about tuna or chicken salad? Refried beans? Ricotta or cottage cheese? Creamed soups? Give us an idea of what you are allowed on your plan and we may be able to be more specific with help for you. -
And every one of these foods which in my presurgery were a great comfort, my post- surgery pouch refuses to tolerate. Greek Yogurt Cottage cheese Bananas Peanut Butter Why did this happen? Wish I knew a Good Reason, she also hates most meats even chewed down to a fine squishy pulp.

I went to the ER on friday was extremely dehydrated and potassium super low. But there no short comings that happen for a reason. I was changed prescription and given naseau medicine. Now I am actually eating tiny tiny amounts, but starting to feel human and not so weak. My energy is going up, and want to start taking vitamins now specially B12, D, and A which I am low. Which do you recommend? This is my routine right now. Wake up at 5 am or 6 am: feeling super thirsty I decided to eat first so I don't have to wait the thirty minutes. But I think I should drink first. I found I love infused water much better than plain but has to be ice cold. What do you do when Out and about? I was looking at infusing bottles but they don't keep the water cold. I am still figuring out what to eat, really don't like eggs or yogurt right now which sucks. Got some silken tofu let's see what I do with that. And for everyone that has supported in my last posts thank you so much!

June 2019 Surgery Siblings!
FluffySaysForkIt! replied to BulletWithButterflyWings's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
May 21st is my liquid diet start date. Two full weeks. I have prepared by buying vitamins, protein of several varieties and all the other usual stuff people buy. Probably a lot less common, but I also bought a snow cone machine. I figure it might be nice to help get some liquid in early on when things are tough. I have tried freezing some of the clear fruity isopure protein drink and then running it through the machine. Worked great! Maybe I can get both some fluid and protein in this way, if needed. Also bought some Torani sugar free to change up the flavor of drinks and plain yogurt. Torani is also pretty great on the snow from the machine as a no cal snack! Special hello to my June 3rd surgery siblings ChelseaMari and starladustangel ! -
Sorry I have missed a few days of posting. Day 3. Watch a performance-Didn't go to a live show but did binge watch Fleabag this weekend. Day 4. Have an early night-check Day 5. Garden-I live in an apartment with no garden access, but I did go to the farmers market and central park this weekend. Day 6. Talk to a friend-Going to see a friend tonight I'm not doing the push-up challenge because I'm working on a consistent routine for weight machines in between cardio this month and that's about all I can handle. I am doing the junk food challenge and so far so good. I can still only do about 4-5 ounces of food per meal so focusing on protein kind of forces me to make good choices. Now that it is spring I'm switching up my meals a bit. I'm doing more greek yogurt for breakfast or snacks than I was this winter. I'm also happy that I don't have an issue with raw vegetables so salads are happening, although mine tend to be very protein heavy so I can get my 70 grams per day. I made a yummy salad for lunch today. Microgreens, chicken, lavender goat cheese, strawberries, and homemade balsamic vinegarette.

I turned into a May gastric sleeve patient. I originally went to surgery March 27th for bypass but due to a previous surgery the bypass could not be done. So I went back in May 1st and came out with the sleeve. It was horrible but I’m glad to be through surgery. I’m still on full liquid diet (2weeks total) and I have zero appetite. I had some minor head hunger yesterday and today I want real food but it’s not an overwhelming craving. I’m just sick of protein drinks and yogurt. Whoever said popcorn was their weakness, I am right there with you!!! I’m sticking to this though, after all I went through to get this surgery I’m not going to do anything to mess up

how has surgery impacted your hunger?
FLHappyGirl replied to Zemi's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I lost my appetite for quite a while after surgery. I ate to get my protein in, not because I was hungry. My restriction is still very noticeable especially when I eat dense protein but I am hungry a few hours later. The hunger is different though, I don't crave the crap I used to crave. I realize now I was a major sugar addict, not so much anymore. Now if I crave sweets I can have a sugar free or no sugar added popsicle (or two) and be good, even a flavored greek yogurt or some berries will usually satisfy the craving. I think this is partly because I refused to eat what was not on my plan (and still do for the most part). I avoid bread, pastas, rice, and sweets. I know in my head if I go back to eating these things it is a slippery slope and I'll be stuffing my face again! The tricky part is head hunger.....I've realized I have strong tendencies to eat when I am stressed, bored or experiencing a lot of emotion (pissed off, anxious, for example.) Looking back, this was always the case. Use your prep time to become aware of triggers and why you are eating and if you are truly hungry or just looking for food to soothe you. It will help after you go through the surgery. Best of luck! -
I had my bypass in 2015. No complications no issues, a perfect experience. I exercise regularly and am very active. I can eat all foods now although sometime sweet thing make my belly rumble. Everything seems great. But!! All of a sudden the past couple of weeks when I eat I feel like the food gets stuck in my chest. It is not heartburn more like the food just stops right between my breasts. The pain is so bad my heart rate goes up and I am in tears. When it first happened I though I didn’t threw enough and made myself throw up that one time to get it out. But the pain just continued. I figured because of that one time I had a bruise inside and it would take a few days to stop hurting. But it’s been weeks and every time I eat it happens. I chew slowly and thoroughly. I take extra care to make sure everything I put in my body is thoroughly chewed and absolutely passable so nothing will get stuck. But there is pain! I even tried eating just soft foods like a mashed banana or yogurt for a few days to help heal whatever Is goin on. It didn’t help even smooth is painful. Anyone have this issue? What could it be? TIA~Crystal

I had my Roux-en-Y surgery on 4/29. I attended 6 weeks of classes prior to surgery and was warned of all the possible issues I could face during the recovery period. I am having no trouble swallowing. I took a Tylenol the other night and instead of sipping water, I took a big gulp and downed a half of a glass before I remembered that I was supposed to be sipping. There is no pain beyond the pain from where they cut through my ab muscles to get inside to perform the surgery. I know I shouldn't complain, but honestly I'm waiting for the "first shoe" to drop, much less the "other shoe." I'm not feeling weak, tired or run down. The only thing I have really noticed is a sudden lack of being hungry. I haven't eaten solid food since Saturday 4/27 and since the procedure, I tried 1/4 cup of plain low-fat Greek yogurt with a squirt of black cherry Mio in it to see if I could tolerate it. No issues. Should I be concerned? I feel weird calling my Surgeon's office to complain about NOT feeling unwell, but I'm really legitimately confused. I was expecting this to be somewhere between "bad" and "miserable" and I honestly don't feel like I underwent "major" surgery. Should I just count my blessings and wait and see?

I would say 1 yogurt, some refried beans and 1/4 c cottage cheese. It was difficult to eat still.

Constipation Question
FluffyChix replied to TG_is_losing_weight's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yeah. Here's my "miracle cure": 17g Miralax in morning coffee 2 colace (docusate sodium) 12g whole psyllium husk (Now! brand) in a glass of cinnamon apple spice Celestial Seasonings tea with liquid vanilla stevia 400 mg magnesium citrate pills lots of dark leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, sulforophane veg 1/2oz-1oz nuts (usually almonds or 1-2tbsp almond butter on GG Brancrisp cracker before bed) 100+ water (unsweetened) 6oz kefir plain fat free 2-4tbsp raw sauerkraut, kimchi, or lactofermented veggies 1/2c Grk yogurt plain fat free When I do this, I have big fluffy beautiful daily visits to the throne room. When I miss anything in this equation for more than a day or two, I develop issues that are Rosemary's Baby epic. -
Oh great thread! I'd forgotten about it! I just had matcha kefir. Oh yes she did! Unorthodox? Perhaps, but as delish as the matcha yogurt I'm now addicted to...ahem, yeah that's you little missy. You know who you are!

Clear Liquids @ Hospital--Aspratame in EVERYTHING
giddygiddygiddy replied to giddygiddygiddy's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I won't be getting anything except ice chips and water swabs the day of my surgery, nothing actually to drink. Post-op day 1 they want me to consume 1oz every 15 minutes during the day of a clear liquid where at least 1 oz each hour should be something other than water--suggesting broth, SF juice or powdered drinks, SF gelatin, and SF popsicles. The second day is when I can start full liquids, to include baby foods, certain soups, and yogurt and pudding. I'll also be doing shakes. Full liquids will be easy enough, I'm more worried about the clear liquids while at the hospital and finding aspratame-free options there. -

I’m eating but super small portions. What I eat in a day: AM: Protein coffee Starbucks decaf espresso with premier protein caramel, 1 oz of fiber oatmeal or grits with protein powder, 1oz of applesauce to take meds, vitamins PM1: 2oz small meal of chicken salad or tuna salad or salmon & spinach or leftovers, Whisps (my fav!!), sometimes a protein shake on the hour commute home, 1 oz of yogurt if I’m hungry PM2: if I’m hungry, sometimes I can’t eat dinner, 2 oz of the PM1 meals, 3oz of clear protein drink, sugar free pudding if I want something sweet I meal prep on Sundays; measure most things, and get 32oz of water in (trying to do better); I don’t force myself to eat and eating out doesn’t always agree with me🙂 -
