  1. Yes. I thought the same. Because when I went for an endoscopy they asked me about ibuprofen Intake. 10 days to surgery?!? Me too!!! What is your date? I am August 6. We should definitely chat. Are you nervous/excited? I am both!
  2. Depends what all youre consuming but you might be going into sugar detox? In which case, you can add a little sugar back into your diet or just power through. Ibuprofen isn't approved by all surgeons and my surgeon doesn't want me taking it now (I'm 10 days until surgery) so check first before taking it.

    April Avengers Strut Your Stuff!!

Okay I'll post what I have - The most current are with my DD's this past weekend...My "before" picture is from 2004 (my heaviest) and my "current" is from two months ago. I'm 10 pounds lighter now and probably need to update, but I still look the same. Okay - Bea - you started this...I want some pics posted girl! LOL
  4. You can do it. Trust me. I seen my Dr and when I seen him in December he told me I had gained 15lbs since I last see him last year well He gave me till Janurey 3rd to lose 5 to 10 pounds and I didn't think I could because of Christmas and New Year's it felt impossible so after Christmas I cut out soda to start and store eating sweets when I went to see him I lost 10lbs and since I started my liquid diet 10 days ago I have lost an additional 15 lbs and I am completely shocked. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I have my Surgery Tuesday and I am beyond excited to see how much I have lost. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. Hello, There seem to be a lot of opinions about the post op diet. At NYU where I had my lap band put in, they say 10 days post op liquids. The first few days I didn't care --- I wasn't hungry. Now, I'm so hungry it hurts. Must I really stay on liquids for another 4 days? I'd love to know other experiences. Thank you.

    Thankful Thread for 9/28 - 10/4

Hey there! Coming back with a new Thankful Thread for this week after taking last week off. What are the things you are thankful for this week? I am thankful for so many kind, compassionate, and uplifting voices on this site and the knowledge that they possess and share. I'm thankful for finding some amazing 1-Carb low-cal tortillas and being able to share them with others here. I think I am going to pick up a rotisserie chicken from the store tonight and a jar of enchilada sauce just so I can keep using them. I'm thankful that I'll be taking a small vacation next week and visiting one of my favorite places again. There's some stress about COVID, but I've got a game plan to keep the risk to myself minimal. I'm thankful that I have lost enough weight that I can go hike in the woods for 2 hours and not feel completely sore and exhausted afterwards. How about you?

Info Needed On Diets And What To Expect

Welcome! I think pain is a purely individual thing. For me, I had some minor complications, immediately following my surgery, and ended up staying in the hospital for 6 days. After the third day I only needed my pain meds (I was still on a pump at that point) to help me sleep at night. The fifth night I didn't use anything, and didn't use any of the pain meds they gave me when I came home (not even Tylenol). But, I have a relatively high tolerance for pain (lifetime migraines and chronic lower back pain). When I was on full liquids (from the day I came home from the hospital) I enjoyed chocolate Muscle Milk Lite (its sugar free), decaf hot tea, unjury chicken broth flavored Protein powder (especially when made with chicken broth instead of straight water), whipped cottage cheese, unsweetened applesauce, Gelatein 20 (a high-protein Gelatin...20 grams of protein in a 4oz cup), and cream of tomato Soup (made with skim milk). I never actually "pureed" anything, when I got to that stage. I ate a lot of tuna salad, and fish, ground turkey, fat-free (but not whipped) cottage cheese, hummus, thinly sliced deli meats (turkey, chicken, and roast beef...all very lean and low-sodium)...anything "soft", "ground", or easily flaked. I was initially on this stage for a week, then developed breakthrough acid reflux. When I called my surgeon about it, he added a daily Prevacid solutab to my meds, and put me back on full liquids for an additional 3 weeks. (I still ate fish and tuna salad, and had no problems with that.) Everyone who is anyone in my life knows I've had surgery. I've been very open about it, and don't bother myself with what anybody else thinks. On the whole, I've found people to be very supportive, and thrilled with my progress so far. I make jokes about my eating...when waitresses look at me funny, because I don't order anything to drink, or when I ask them nicely to please only put 2 oz of fish, and 2 TBSP of veggies, on my plate, and to please put the rest in a to-go box before bringing it to the table...and it takes all the discomfort out of the situation. I felt an increase in energy within 2 weeks of surgery, although I still had days (for several more weeks) during which I had NO energy. I began walking on a treadmill 10 days after my surgery, and progressed to walking an hour (at 3.0 mph) twice a day, each time followed by an hour of Water aerobics. Yeah...call me crazy, but I am thoroughly LOVING losing this weight!! My complications were related to increased inflammation in my sleeve, immediately following surgery. The morning after surgery, I was taken for a leak test, during which they found my stomach so inflamed the dye wasn't able to pass through...at all! I went back to my room, they put an NG tube back down my throat, and left it in another 4 days. I was NPO during that entire time...not even ice chips to suck on...in order to give my sleeve time to settle down, and the inflammation to resolve. The evening of the 5th day they removed the NG tube, and let me try sips of water during the night. The following morning they allowed me to move to Clear Liquids, and I enjoyed some beef broth. (I tried Jello that day, but it didn't feel "good" going down...I still haven't had regular jello. LOL) The day after shifting to clear liquids I was moved to "full liquids", and allowed to drink my first Protein shake (I love the chocolate Muscle Milk Lite!). When I had no problems with that, they decided to let me go home (YAY!). With the exception of the wicked bad acid reflux (which I never had prior to surgery), I have had no problems at all. I follow my surgeon's/nutritionist's directions, take tiny bites, chew them like crazy, and take 30-45 minutes to eat my meals....and I'm steadily losing weight. If you, or your husband, have any additional questions, feel free to reach out...I'm happy to lend any help I can. Laura
  8. I’ve been a single mom ( sole custody no other parent) since I was 4 months pregnant. My son now 19 months has an auto-immune illness. I work 10 hour days and am in my Masters program. So finding time to workout eat right and all of my doctors appointments on top of my sons weekly ones has been challenging to say the very least but hopefully worth it. I don’t have my exact surgery date yet but December is the target. I want to go to cedar point again, buy a bathing suit (which I haven’t done in almost a decade). Wear shorts instead of pants when it’s 100 degrees out bc I don’t like the way I look. Sit comfortably on a plane. But most important of all be around to watch my son grow up.

Thanks for letting me know your feelings, like you I'm a nurse and have been considering backing out. Although, I know that I really need this surgery. I'm staying positive, right now I'm doing my 6 mth supervised diet but trying not too lose too much weight so far I've lost 10 lbs and gained 3 back. I have a window of 12 lbs or my insurance want pay so trying to lose 2lbs a mth. The Protein shakes have worked very well and not as hungry. Since I've lost 10lbs in one week with the Protein shakes, I'm thinking I will do really well with the lapband. Good luck to you on your weight loss journey. Thanks again.
  10. On my six month anniversary of my surgery, I dropped into the 160s for the first time in 20 years. I can hardly believe it. Six months, 60 pounds, 10 pounds a month. I am thrilled and terrified all at the same time. I have been here before. And then I wasn't. But, this time HAS to be different. This time WILL be different. I am different. This surgery has made all the difference in the world. This is no longer about food. This is about LIFE. h230/c168/g160
  11. I was allowed to eat 3 meals and 2 Snacks. Very low carb and no processed. High Protein with veggies. No fruits 10 days prior to surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  12. Ok..title says it all I am supposed to be on a semi all liquid diet for 10 days. Under 40 gm carbs daily. I have been doing Protein shakes w Almond milk (next to nothing carb wise), broth, Jello an a few sugar free fugsicles (19gm for 2) I am type 2 and am really strugglung. MY surgery is in one week. They told me 2 weeks for pre op diet due to my weight assuming my liver would be huge Would I screw things up if I ate a piece or 2 of chicken? I cannot imagine that 10 days of 800-1000 cals w < 30-40 GM carbs and the rest protein that a few pieces of chicen would stall my liver shrinkage or cause it to balloon after shrinking some. or would it? I am really not looking for a license to cheat or whatever, like people asking can't I have a piece of wedding cake. I am serious about this and in for the long haul, but I am nearly seeing double and cannot stay awake. I have one more week of this and struggling any thoughts? I would hate to travel cross country (going to Mexico actually) and get there and they tell me they can't operate...I am not going to blow it over a piece of chicken! But what is the reality of what can be tolerated? Thanks for ideas ad experiences

LAPBAND - 4 MONTHS POST OP

WELL I HAD MY DR. APPT. TODAY. I LOST ANOTHER 3 1/2 LBS. FOR A TOTAL OF 50 LBS. YEAH!! I AM AT MY HALF WAY GOAL NOW. I ALSO GOT A FILL BEING MY 3RD. - 1/2 CC. MAKING A TOTAL OF 5.75 CC IN A 10 CC BAND. IT DIDN'T HURT THIS TIME EITHER. THE DR. ASSISTANT DID IT THIS TIME. YEAH! SO IT IS LIQUIDS TODAY, SOFT TOMORROW AND THEN REG DIET. I HOPE I HAVE ALOT MORE RESTRICTION NOW. I AM GOING TO TRY SOME GROUND LEAN HAMBURG SOON AS I HAVE YET TO HAVE THAT. I AM GETTIN TIRED OF CHICKEN, FISH, TUNA, AND SALMON. I ALSO ATTENDED MY GROUP SUPPORT MEETING TODAY. DR. RYS THE PSYCIATRISH WAS GUEST SPEAKER. HE WAS GREAT. VERY INSPIRATIONAL. THREE THINGS HE SAID THAT I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU. 1.) EVERY DAY THAT YOU DO GOOD, REWARD YOURSELF WITH SOMETHING. IT CAN BE AS SMALL AS A CARAMEL, OR A FLAVORED CREAMER FOR YOUR COFFEE OR TEA, OR IT CAN BE AS BIG AS NEW CLOTHING. IT WILL HELP YOU FEEL MOTIVATED. 2.) KEEP A JOURNAL. EVERY DAY WRITE DOWN ONLY THE GOOD THINGS THAT YOU DID FOR THE DAY. THEN READ IT EACH DAY. IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE HAVING A DOWN DAY. 3.) HE SAID EVERYONE FAILS AT SOME POINT - AND WHEN YOU DO, PICK YOURSELF UP, DUST YOURSELF OFF, AND START ALL OVER AGAIN! SOUNDS LIKE GOOD ADVICE TO ME. I THINK I MAY JUST TRY THESE THINGS. SO HERE'S TO A WONDERFUL TOMORROW!!!
  16. I'm new to this site, just found it today! I've gone through the 6mos of dr visits, etc, and have already been approved for gastric bypass. I'm frustrated with my surgeons office. I was on track to have surgery in May, but they dropped the ball by not scheduling me for the required pre-surg classes. Now I'm 10 wks out from a big vacation and still not scheduled for surgery. I was hoping to be 4 months post-op and able to walk better with weight loss. This really has me down and I've decided to postpone my surgery until Oct. I haven't told them yet. I'm waiting for the call to schedule pre-op testing and will tell them then. It took years to finally be mentally ready for this surgery and now I'm so unsure of what to do.

    Thankful Thread for 9/28 - 10/4

I am so excited that today I weighed less than my husband for the first time in our 11 year relationship! He was about 20 pounds lighter when we met, and I was 5-10 pounds lighter than my current weight. He is also about 6 inches taller than me 🤦🏼‍♀️ I am thankful for the ability to log over 7 hours of exercise, according to my Apple Watch, last week. I could never have done that 3 months ago. I am thankful for my neighbors. My next door neighbor hosted a neighborhood party last night and it just reaffirmed what an amazing neighborhood I get to live in. I am also thankful for all the support and ideas provided from everyone on this site.

My story, 1 week pre op

Hi! My name is Felicia. I am 45, going to be 46 on May 2nd. I have 2 beautiful daughters, ages 23 & 29 and 2 grandsons, ages 2 & 5. I am married to a wonderful husband and we will be renewing our vows on our 10 year wedding anniversary June 25th of this year! I live with multiple chronic illnesses and multiple sclerosis. I've survived cancer twice! I'm very blessed to be alive. My family consists of mostly obese people and a lot of the health conditions that go along with obesity. I am determined to NOT be obese. I lost my mother (12/19/2012) at age 69 to colon cancer, diabetes, heart disease and a bunch of other health conditions that were related to obesity. I see what my children are going through missing there grandmother. She was my best friend and I was her sole caregiver 24/7 for the last 4 years of her life. I do not want to do that to my children or grandchildren. I am determined to lose weight the right way, get healthy, stay healthy and BE HERE for my family. The loss of my mother is hard on all of us and may have been preventable if she had not smoked, stopped smoking and taken better care of herself. Although, I suffer every day with pain, fatigue and multiple symptoms from my illnesses and disease...I am detemined to live! I've had 38 surgeries, 50 epidurals for lower lumbar back pain, 3 spinal surgeries, H1Ni, viral menengitis, a terrible car accident that left me with a brain injury, migraines, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, etc. I could go on. My heaviest weight has been 255lbs at 5'7. I started my weight loss journey at 232. I've tried all of the diets and fads....they didn't work for me. It's hard for me to get regular exercise in due to my health conditions BUT...I can walk, thank God! So, I walk. I do what I can when I can, which makes it hard to get and keep the weeight off. I started my weight loss journey in February of this year at 232lbs and am currently at 216lbs. My VSG surgery is on May 4th, 2 days after my birthday (my gift to myself) and I need to be at 212lbs by then. I've been on a full liquid diet for a week...and the weight JUST ISN'T COMING OFF!!!! Any suggestions? I am drinking 3-5 prepared protein shakes daily, along with all of my vitamins and minerals suggested by my doctor and 64-90 oz. of water daily. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Good News & Many Questions

Everything varies from surgeon to surgeon.. But I was on a 7 day liquid diet prior to surgery...Most recommend chewable or liquid vits to start...i did chewables until I was 10 weeks out and then started on gummies... I did a liquid Vit D because it was very low....I'm not sure about ceasing your meds... your surgeon will tell you all of that... I had to get my IUD (Mirena) removed... hopefully I can get it replaced next week!!! Congrats and I so happy for you!!!
  20. Im new to this site and forum. I will be sleeved 10/29. Prayers are appreciated. Hope to find people to go through this journey with.

    Non-scale victory today!

Isn't that the best feeling! I'm a bit older, but did the same thing with a gown I had worn 10 years ago - the last time I had lost a ton of weight. I weigh more now then I did then, but the gown was big on me. Don't know how that happened but I'll take it! Congratulations!!
  23. I'm currently on my pre-op diet which is a 1000 calorie a day mostly liquid diet. I am allowed to have shakes (Muscle Milk Lite), which is absolutely atrocious because of the after taste. I was convinced it was not bad and I bought $150 worth of it to last me the 2 weeks. Also I am allowed to have 2cups of vegetables a day which is my splurge of a iceberg lettuce for dinner. It's day 2 and I'm down from 373lbs to 363lbs, 10 pounds in 2 days, I don't know if it's bad to lose that much weight or is it normal. It's very sad but I can't wait for my surgery and I can't wait till I'm able to eat some scrambled eggs when I get eat soft food....

    Question

It depends on your insurance. My policy has an in-network out of pocket maximum of $2000 per year. By the time the surgery came around (September 28), I had already spent $600 over the previous almost 10 months in co-pays and a couple of other items that my PCP asked me to do (abdominal ultrasound, chest x-ray, etc.). So, I had to pay about $1400 for everything. (The hospital submitted their claim to insurance first, so that money went to them. Insurance covered everything else at 100%.) My doctor didn't have any "doctor fees." My parents had bariatric surgery over the past few years in Alabama, and their surgeon charged a $300 administrative fee per patient. I personally think that is kind of dirty, but apparently a lot of them do it.
  25. QueenOfTheTamazons

    Question

$300 fee is nothing. Drs do have costs associated with submitting your case to insurance company. People like me, who required 3 full submissions and 2 peer to peer appointments cost more than easier patients/insurance companies so the fees balance out. My first surgeon had a $2500 "lifestyle management fee" that had to be paid in advance of the surgery being scheduled. And that was on top of all the other costs that insurance was covering 100%. Supposedly that was to cover support groups/classes and the doctor coming out to visit you in cases of extreme need, but considering we lived 50 miles away and the support programs were all during business hours we would never have used any. Plus, if we coukd afford $5000 we wouldnt be on medical. The surgeon also refused to work with us on the fee. The surgeon who did my sleeve (and who i recommend if in CA) is Dr. Richard Nguyen of Lifetime Surgical. He charges $300 and i didnt find out until after I paid it that that fee also includes the bariatric diet food for the 2 weeks preop. That makes the portion that goes to them more like $150-200. I find that very reasonable for all they did. HW 385 SW 359 CW 344 Sleeved 10/5/16
