Completely Sidetracked - Need Help!
PdxMan replied to Allegra Cole's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes, congrats on recognizing this and starting to move on. Just know, while you may be done with her, she is not done with you. She will be calling, so remain strong. As far as getting back on track, I would suggest you ensure you have no crap in your kitchen. No alcohol, no sweets and no sweet drinks. Continue with this resolution to get back on track and dump them all. I remember I would tell myself, "Once this tub of ice cream is gone, I just won't buy another." No ... I just needed to dump the ice cream whether it was full or not. Stock your shelves with proper foods. meats, Jerky, yogurts ... you know the drill. At least for awhile, eat exclusively at home. Don't be tempted by fast food or restaurants. This is just to get yourself back on track and disassociate yourself with the poor habits you developed with this woman. Get back to the basics of eating Protein first, then veggies and/or starches. Don't drink right before, during or right after eating. Chew very well setting your utensil down in between bites. Evaluate how you feel after that bite and try to stop eating AS SOON as you BEGIN to feel restriction. There should be some time between the swallow and next bite. Try not to eat to the point of where you are stuffed. That is what we used to do. Bottom line is things only change when we make a change. If we go back to doing things the way we used to, then we will get the same results. Praying 2 + 2 won't equal 4 leads only to resentments. -
I'm no expert. All I know is what I've read here from other WLS patients. But it's a modified intermittent fast. Basically you fast twice a week and eat normally the other five days. YouTube has a lot of videos. For the fasting days women eat or drink 500 calories. Men 600. That's it. Mondays and Thursdays seem like popular days for the fasting. For some reason it gives the body a reset and helps weight loss. I thought I'd try it since it's easy and not too different from when I have to go on liquids after a band adjustment. Just calorie driven rather than liquid driven.

Here goes... It took an 1.5 hours to get to the Surgery Center in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. They called me back at 9am to get me ready for my 10am surgery. My surgery lasted an hour. Arrived in Recovery room around 11am in a ton of pain. Stomach and left shoulder gas pain. The nurse loaded me up on Dilaudid and Morphine which helped in the end after they maxed out. I was so out of it that I could barely open my eyes after being in Recovery for over 5 hours. My throat felt like they scraped it all the way down with the tube. I could barely speak. Not a good experience. Anyway they needed me to drink some water and pee before they would let me go. I had such a hard time peeing but finally did it. The Anesthesiologist came up to me and told me that if I didn't wake up more than he was going to admit me to the hospital for the night. Well, I knew that couldn't happen because I was a self pay and insurance would not pay for me to stay a night in the hospital. I slapped my face a few times and even took a small walk in order wake up enough to go home. Well, finally at 4:30pm they let me go. I nodded in and out of consciousness in the car on the way home. Had sips of water, broth and tea before heading to bed. I was only a tiny bit nauseous but never got sick. The port site hurts the worst. Mine is on the right side. Fast forward to the next day. Still in pain, throat a little better, gas pain still pretty bad at times. I was told walking helped but I also used a heating pad on the shoulder which helped a little. My Dr. gave me Lortabs 5/500mg for the pain which helps a little. I feel bloated and have been using Gas X strips to help which I guess helps. I was hoping to have a better story to tell...sorry. My port site is swollen like an egg is under my skin. I have 4 inch slits across my belly and 1 smaller one above to my left where my stomach is. I have had 2 muscle milks and about 1/2 cup of Lipton Noodle broth. I also had a few sips of apple juice. I feel weak and my stomach hurts. However I think I'm a wimp when it comes to pain so don't go by my experience alone. It's the same pain as when my gallbladder was removed 11 years ago. I'm looking forward to feeling better each day. I'll keep everyone posted. __________________

Question for lifters: How are you increasing your caloric intake?
simpsongrad replied to BigViffer's topic in The Guys’ Room
I just bought the gold standard Protein powder myself. it is the regular type not for muscle building per se. i am only a few months out but train really hard doing cross fit and then coming home to jump on my elliptical for another 40 minutes every morning. I feel like I am not losing as fast as i should be and i think part of it is because I am working out so hard and not being able to fuel my workouts appropriately. Will be interested to see what other say. Good Luck! -
I occasionally eat a tiny amount of bread, most often in the form of a egg in the basket (I can eat only ONE) or a toasted cheese sandwich (only one). This isn't very often. Other times I might have a bite or two of a dinner roll or biscuit. It fills me up too fast with carb heavy calories and doen not satisfy me for very long.

To those who are considering VGS
chilo1 replied to 1-4-Many's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I am one those fat people who only had/have about 60 lbs to lose. All I can say is that I tried fasting, all fluids, and all the other diets under the sun since I was 9. I'm 42 now, and I would lose weight and then when I stopped the diet I would gradually put on all the weight, and more. To start with I was 5 lbs overweight, I ended up 60 lbs overweight (obese) It's just that all these diets usually don't work in the long term. I am sure that if I hadn't had my sleeve I would end up 300 lbs and with even more health issues ( at 220 lbs I had insulin resistance-the next stage would've been diabetes and pain in my knees) Now at 159 lbs not only have these problems disappeared but I feel so much healthier and I LOVE exercising ( I NEVER thought I would say that in my life!) Good luck with your sleeve -
Holy cow Batman!!! What a game! My head still hurts from all the stress …and maybe those Steelertinis. I have to leave for my 4th monthly weigh-in in a few minutes…great timing, I know…I’m an emotional eater, so what do you think I did last night with all that Steeler food? Well, here’s hoping I don’t show a gain (and thank goodness there will be no breathalyzer test…just kiddin’). Well this town was rockin’ last night…and this morning…and for the next year!!! What a game…oh, yeah, I said that…but WHAT A GAME!!! Mr.SA loves games where they just trounce on the opposition (he can hardly stand watching if we’re losing)…not me…I LOVE games like last night…edge of your seat, heart in your throat, hyperventilating, biting those Steeler fingernail tips off games! So I was in my element last night…Terrible Towels were waving so fast we had ‘liftoff’…or maybe it was that last touchdown that had me off the floor. Can I just say Ben is the Man and Santonio Holmes…well he played at my alma-mater, Ohio State University, so of course he deserved that MVP…what a catch!!! Steelers now have the most Super Bowl wins of any team…goodbye ‘One for the Thumb’…hello ‘Super Six-Pack’!! Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes (L) keeps both feet in the endzone as he beats Arizona Cardinals safety Aaron Francisco to catch the game winning touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter of the NFL's Super Bowl XLIII football game in Tampa, Florida, February 1, 2009. things have tasted off today for some reason
donna12 replied to donna12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Summerrain, but isn't breakfast supposed to "break the fast and start the metabolism"? I'm never ever hungry in the morning and have to force myself to eat something. Otherwise I could wait till 2 or 3 in the afternoon to eat. Help??? -
Hello June Buddies, Now that it's July I wanted to comment that we need to stay connected. At this point (July1st) everyone in the "where's my june bandsters" should be! lol! Today is my day 5 for me (6/26) and overall I'm sure I must be healing and getting stronger. Less bouts of severe gas pain today. The only real pain is the intermittent left shoulder pain. NOTHING seems to touch it to decrease intensity when it comes on. I've tried pain relievers like ex str tylenol, ice packs, heating pad, etc) My best description to my husband is to think about the pain and nausea you feel when you've dislocated some part of your body. When pain eases up things aren't so bad, but when it comes on it's EXCRUCIATING! I've been walking a mile or so each day too (very slowly ) but find eating to be a vicious circle of gas/gurgles if I eat and the same if I don't. Anyone have any ideas for stage 3 liquids that really work for them? Well, hang in there "Junies" and for goodness sake KEEP IN TOUCH!

I weighed myself today and since 2/5/11 (started pre-op diet), I have lost 20 lbs! I was banded on 2/11/11 so I'm thrilled with my results so far. I have some ways to go, of course, but I can feel the difference in my clothes, my face looks less bloated and my stomach is starting to go down. I worked today for the first time since surgery and I did feel pretty sore when I got home in the port site. I also seemed to have some majorly trapped gas in my body last night and into today. I'm doing pretty darned well with this. I'm proud of myself! I had a little incident last night where I think I didn't chew up a piece of soft chicken well enough or ate it too fast. I dunno but it got stuck, it hurt...ultimately I barfed (different barfing post band)...twice. I cannot wait to get into ONEderland. I'm four lbs away from that. I hope to see it within the next two weeks. Yippee! Life is good...

very nice and uplifting, we often beat ourselves up and succumb to jealousy and envy over what other people have or their success being greating than ours, instead we should focus more on what god has blessed us with and be thankful we were even able to take this great journey rather it be slow or fast. god bless and thanks again for the uplifting message

Wow, so many great responses! I did go to the class tonight and *tried* not to be too obviously irritated. It wasn't all that bad really. She mostly talked about ways we "use" food such as to celebrate special occasions or to show appreciation to others. She did touch on using food to fill an emotional need or to fill a boredom gap, which again I don't relate to. The majority of people in the class did feel like they are emotional eaters so I guess for them it was helpful. In thinking more about it, and after reading all of your thoughtful responses, I do agree that I am a "foodie". I do love food and trying new restaurants and new foods. I love the taste of food and I do eat too much (mostly because I am more hungry than average weight people but sometimes because it just plain tastes good!). However, being a foodie does not equal emotional eating, because I know plenty of thin people who are foodies too; those who love eating out, trying new foods, and the flavor and texture of food. She talked tonight about "mindless eating" and "not enjoying your food because you eat so fast" and I don't relate to those things either. I am always paying attention to what I eat because I always enjoy it! I see myself as no different from the thin friends I dine with who are foodies too except for the fact I am more hungry than they are and can eat more than they can. I was laughing tonight because another couple friend of me and my husband just invited us out to Dim Sum on Sunday in honor of Chinese New Year. This couple friend is thin but they looove to eat! So, we'll go to Dim Sum, and we're all foodies, and I will eat more than them but not because I'm emotional. I don't think my love of food will change after I get the band, but I do think (hope) the band will control my portion sizes, which is really what I need to be successful.

Starting to think I chose the wrong program...
Sue40 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started on the Tufts/NEMC program three weeks ago. There are a LOT of requirements including 5 weeks of behavior classes (group therapy basically), 2 nutritionist appointments, 2 physiology appointments, 2 psych appointments, 2 medical consults, 1 surgical consult, 1 "intro" session and now I've learned 2 group physiology classes. It takes a lot of time. They make no effort to bunch appointments together, so I'm spending a lot of time driving to Boston. Here's the reason I'm peeved today. I had my first medical consult. She asked me if I snore. Yes, so? Now she is going to make me stay overnight in their sleep center to determine if I have apnea! I do not have apnea! She made a big deal out of the fact that I wake-up during the night. I have to pee! As I've aged I've lost my ability to hold it that long. All my friends the same age say the same thing! I snore because I have a partially deviated septum, large adenoids and I'm allergic to pretty much everything! She also may make me go for a hematology consult, which takes ages and ages to get. Oh, to top it off, she tried to convince me to switch to gastric bypass. I explained to her that GB is not an option for me because I want to have a child and 42 is the cutoff for IVF, so I don't have time for surgery, healing, and still have successful IVF before I'm 42. She agreed, but thinks the higher weight loss I'll likely achieve with GB is more important. And she insists I need to lose ALL the weight I will lose with LB before I get pregnant. That it would be "very bad". PLEASE. Plenty of people get pregnant with LB, get unfilled if necessary, and then get refilled later. Slowing my weight loss is less of a big deal to me than never having a child. This is a very delicate subject for me and she just didn't seem to get it. She kept talking down to me saying things like, "I do this for a living". I was on the verge of tears driving home. I lost my job (after 10+ years at the same place) in February and they KNOW I need this surgery done before I can look for another job (because there is no way I could do all this with a new job, there are just too many appointments, which they agree with). I had contacted them about the program before I lost my job, I didn't decide to do this because I lost my job. They told me they could put me on a "fast track" since I have no co-morbidities. Except for having a BMI over 40 I'm really healthy, which they acknowledged. Now I don't know what to do. I'm about $300 into it (not including all the travel costs), which isn't that much. I don't know if I should just find an "easy" center. I chose Tufts because they are the pioneer of LB in New England and have had zero erosions. And now I'm questioning my decision to choose LB or GB! Does anyone have any advice? Should I just scrap it and start over somewhere else? The psych doctor, who shepherds you through the program, told me to call him if I have any questions. Should I call him and talk through this with him? -
Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food
Matthew replied to LindaS's topic in Food and Nutrition
Our genetics just can't work as fast as food companies marketing.....but there are more factors than what they're making and advertising. Portion sizes, sedentary lifestyles, increased bombardment of stress and responsibilities are more to blame IMHO. But...like any capitalist philosophy....they're giving what there customers want. Bigger and "better". It's up to us to make informed choices regarding our diet....not government regulation. I feel there are so many more healthy food options out there now compared to the last 25 years...it's all up to the individual choice at the end of the day. -
Today I went to see my surgeon (Dr. Echevarria in Tampa). He said I need to lose 20 more lbs before surgery. I am so frustrated! I had a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago and I have had PCOS for years. Anyone with PCOS knows that losing weight is next to impossible. I haven't been able to exercise for a month because I was in so much pain and I had a prolapse. Now I can't exercise at all and all I can do is calorie-restrict. So I am down to 800 calories a day. He said this and then told me I could schedule for surgery. My date is the 22nd of August (this month!). That gives me 18 days to lose 20 lbs. I am not sure if he was trying to scare me into not bingeing or if he actually will turn me away if I only lose 18. To be honest, I almost cried. What am I supposed to do? If I could lose the weight that fast alone I wouldn't want surgery.

3rd fill - having problems
CharmedMist replied to breesue's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, Ready2, they put 4 in on your first fill? I've had three fills so far and only have 3 cc's so far. Maybe that's why I don't lose "as fast" as some of the others. I wonder how the doctors decide who gets the amount they give and why. -
I was at an antique auction yesterday. There was a sign that said - "If we are what we eat, then I am fast, easy and cheap". I burst out laughing. Driving home, I was thinking was my sign should say: Pre-surgery: "If we are what we eat, them why am I not sinfully rich?" Post surgery: "If we are what we eat, any day I will be breaking out with gills and feathers!" I thought it would be fun to hear what other people's signs would say. Sharon

I'm nearly 11 weeks post op, and gradually over the last several weeks I've been losing the ability to tolerate food, have nausea and gagging after even a few bites of food, and don't want to eat anything at all. My doctor believes it is a stricture, but I was a self-pay surgery, so everything is out of pocket and I can't afford the diagnostic test to confirm, nor the dilation procedure. It isn't an emergency, so I can't simply get it done and work something out with the bill later. As a student living off a stipend, I had to borrow the money for the procedure as is, so I'm stuck until I get my tax return. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with strictures here (the chronic ones that develop 2-3 months post op, not the acute sort right after surgery), and what their experiences were both before and after it was treated (if it was treated at all). One person told me "you're so lucky, now you'll lose weight fast," but going from an overeater to a chronically malnourished, vitamin-deficient, hairless, toothless mess isn't a very good trade off. Any fellow sleevers who were part of that unlucky 3.5%?

I think that every Dr. and every NUT does something different. Never heard of the 5 minute or 30 minute rule. They basically want me to get the right number of nutrients and protein in. I got popped by my Nut last visit for not eating enough. She wanted me to set my phone to ring every 2 hours and eat something. So I overall I don't think that there are hard and fast rules, nor is every rule wrong. Just different Drs. do what they think works for them. Your mileage may vary!
-
Congrats!! There is no such thing as losing too fast; too slow or just right. This isn't Goldilocks and the 3 pounds. You lose what you lose when you lose it and you be happy. As long as you are getting the nutrient and water you need. That is all that matters.

It pushes the food through to fast.

Just had my Kaiser orientation
Jdserra replied to TammyLee66's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As far as the sleep machine goes... They will send it home with you and you bring it back a few days later. It records all your information and they just plug it into their computer and read it. If you don't like bulky stuff on your face ask for the pillow instead of the Mask before you take it home. The pillow is a small little thing that goes under your nose as opposed to the whole mask that goes over your face. Hopefully your insurance covers the machine because I'm pretty sure they're going to tell you you need it. I swear It's their way of making a little extra money. I graduated 8/12/16. They took awhile to call me to schedule with the therapist and doctor (2 weeks past from graduation and I still haven't heard anything) I had to call and request a call back which happens pretty quick. Unfortunately they were booked so I had to wait two weeks for both appointments, each one was one day apart but they want you to have both before you can see the surgeon. The day before my doctor/ bariatric doctor appointment they called me and said he called off sick. So that put me back another 2 more weeks for the rescheduled appointment. Just don't miss the appointments and hopefully they're not fully booked like they were with me. After I walked out of the doctor's appointment they said I would hear from the surgeon's office within a week. From my experience and everyone else I know you get this call within a day or two most the time it's the same day you hear from them so when I waited three to four days and still didn't hear anything I had to call the Kaiser office back and sure enough they forgot to send my file over to the surgeon. She said she would do it right then and there ...no more than an hour later I got the call. That was on a Wednesday, the surgeon scheduled me that Friday Oct 21st. The surgeon gave me his first available appointment which was November 30th. I asked to be put on the cancellation list being that I'm a stay-at-home mom my schedule is completely open. He actually ended up having a cancellation that following Monday LOL. I had my surgery Monday October 24th. So it came up fairly fast on me. So be sure you ask to be put on the cancellation list! -

Seems like yesterday I was starting those classes. I do miss them. They go by fast! I started mine in April and was sleeved in Oct. Good luck!! Sent from my SM-J700T using the BariatricPal App
