Sigh. The hair loss has happened
Esi replied to qtdoll's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Ugh! It’s not a fun part. I will agree with the other posts about cutting it shorter, perhaps shoulder length or shorter. Curls will help fill in the gaps. Although my hair started growing back after about six months, at almost 2 years it is still not back to how it looked before surgery. I still have parts around my forehead that are only 2 inches long, I hope they are the last to fill-in. But definitely worth the trade-off! Hang in there, it will get better. -
I would have told him how much I used to weigh! Impress him. Tell him your BMI used to be morbidly obese. So you will take a few points over normal any day! When I go to the doctor if mine is 1 point higher then it should be, I get sent home with a paper about weight loss & I healthy diet🙄

I agree with the others - everything you said is completely normal. The stalls, the hair loss (and that will grow back), and the occasional slip-up. It's only a problem if you don't know how to recover from it - that is, forgive yourself, learn from it, and get right back on plan. And 62 lbs in six months is totally normal. That's about where I was at that point.

Sigh. The hair loss has happened
catwoman7 replied to qtdoll's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
you just have to ride it out and know that it'll grow back. Like the others have said, a shorter style will make it look less obvious (mine was either chin-length or shoulder-length at the time, and I didn't lose all that much hair, so on me at least, it wasn't a noticeable loss) -
Sigh. The hair loss has happened
summerseeker replied to qtdoll's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It is heart breaking. My husband had never seen me with short hair. I think he loved my long hair more than me. I went shoulder length and then a couple of months later, a pixie cut. My hair loss phase lasted about 4 scary months and settled just before it became really noticeable. I have some new growth, we call it bum fluff, fine whispery strands. I think I may keep it short in future because its a revelation to me how easy it is to wash and style -
I can see how frustrating that is, but then again you've already lost almost 80 pounds which is a LOT. So, your body is probably adjusting to that massive weight loss before you can start losing again. I spent the last week of October, all of November and the first week of December in a stall, pretty much. I only lost 6 kilos (13 pounds) in those three months, most of it in December. I'm thinking January is going to be your month. It will be great starting the new year with renewed weight loss!

Weight loss- Bypass to sleeve
Possum220 replied to pattyoj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So you started at 253 and you are now 220? Seems like a difference of 33lbs. 33lbs is more than 2 stone. What is not to like about that loss. Weight loss is slower second time around. Stay off the scales for a little bit. Do something different. Take up a new hobby and distract yourself. -

oof my hair is falling out, too ive lost a ton of weight post-op, and ive been stalled the past week or so because my period has finally come back (yay? o.O), and ive caught a cold (double yay xD). im not struggling super hard eating anything in particular, but sometimes nothing sounds good or goes down easily. i struggled early on with various complications and strictures, but i haven't needed an endoscopy to widen my stomach pouch connection since the end of november! i think im finally out of the woods! i try sooo hard to hit my daily protein goals but it's difficult. my dietitian has me aiming for 80 g of protein daily and i am regularly hitting somewhere between 60-80 g of protein which ends up being around 700-900 calories. ive definitely become more of a savory over sweet person post-op - i completely forgot about sweets this christmas! xD so far ive lost about 120 lbs (85 lbs post-op) and 48 inches overall. i got new workout clothes for christmas because nothing fits anymore! xD ive gone from 5x to 2x clothes, and a tight size 28 pants to a loose 18-20! im trying so hard - this cold really has me frustrated because i want to work out and keep up my progress, but i have to stay home for now and not get sicker or get anyone else sick. -
62 pounds in six months is a totally decent rate of loss. I had lost around that much at that stage. Hair loss is normal and most of us go through it, and I daresay all of us have had a day or so of going over the calorie allowance due to a birthday, or Christmas, or a holiday. There's absolutely nothing to lose hope about here - everything you've described is perfectly normal.

Our hair can be such a strong representation of how we see ourselves soo losing it like this can be stressful & difficult to accept. I cut mine to just above my shoulders. My hair looked thicker, bouncier (didn’t have all the weight of my long hair pulling my remaining hair down) & the shorter strands didn’t look so scary in the bottom of the shower or in my brush. Plus it takes less time for your new growth to catch up to the shorter length. You can always grow it again to a longer length if you want. Try not to let it stress you more - you don’t need the extra worry to add to the loss. It will slow back to its usually shedding rate in about 3 months. -
Hi- I had a bypass in 2016 and just had a sleeve December 7th. I am 22 days post op and my scale hasn’t moved since day 14. Is this normal? Pre op weight - 253 Surgery weight - 237 Current - 220

3 months out & my hair is falling out. The black & white photo was when I weighed 295. I had thick, amazing hair. The one on the right was this Christmas at 173lbs. Hair is definitely thinner & stringy. & I'm wearing it curly, it looks even thinner when I straighten it. I know this isn't permanent, I know it'll grow back eventually. But man its still upsetting What have you guys done to combat this? Or how to cope with hair loss?

Only lost 62lb in six months? Nothing only about that, I would say it was pretty significant. Hair loss is common after any surgery, and for the majority of the people, the issue resolves itself in time. Sweets well tis the season and all that, what matters there is ensuring that you get back on track. You've lost 62lb how can that be a waste of time and money. Surely your health has improved? Surely you are walking lighter and breathing easier? While the end goal maybe a much healthier weight, sometimes its useful to focus on non scale goals. Improved health and fitness...lower blood pressure and cholesterol, able to walk faster or jog, fitting into smaller clothing sizes, able to play with children/grandchildren easily etc etc Well done, keep up the great work!

No, you haven’t wasted your time or money. So you ate some dessert & other treats over Christmas. It’s not Christmas every day & if you’ve recognised it for what it is (a special occasion exception) & gone back to eating as per your plan you’re fine. You’ll always be faced with these type of dilemmas (travelling, dining out, holidays, etc.). Over time we learn how not to beat ourselves up about it, make the best choices we can in the situation, accept it & move forward. Part of the weight loss process is learning about your eating, what foods you can or can’t eat (or are or are t willing to eat) & how much or how often you can eat some foods. I described it as discovering what foods I could eat regularly, occasionally, rarely & which foods it was best if I avoided. I don’t eat sweet foods except at Christmas & certain special events - rarely. Some people work out they can have a small serve of say pizza with the family or they work out healthier ways of eating old favourites like a bun less burger - occasionally. I don’t eat high processed carbs like bread, pasta & rice - avoid. Oh, and I’d lost about 68lbs at 6 months so not much difference. Seems like you’re pretty much on track. And the accelerated loss of the hair you would naturally be shedding usually lasts about 3months +/-. Your new hair is still growing just at it’s usual rate. Losing some hair, which regrew, was a small temporary price to pay for my weight loss. You’ve got this.

I am 6 months post op and I’ve only lost 62 lbs. I’ve struggled with hair loss and I’ve slipped with all the sweets this holiday season. Nothing too crazy though, just enough to be disappointed. Have I wasted my time and money at this point?

Same thing happened to me. As @catwoman7 said this is pretty common with our weight loss. It’s tough on our liver & lots of hormones, triglycerides, etc. stored in your fat are released into your bloodstream as you lose weight. Always a good idea to keep watch on it but it’s likely once your weight stabilises your levels will revert to what they were before surgery or be better.

do you ever just feel huge? lol
Candigrl1 replied to liveaboard15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I feel this way every time I look in a mirror. Even though my clothes are huge on me it still feels like I haven't loss anything. People will tell me oh you lost weight and look smaller and that small part of my brain will think they are just being nice and playing along. Like others on this topic my weight loss has slowed down but I keep trying and moving on. -
high liver enzyme values are not at all unusual during the rapid weight loss phase. Losing weight quickly is hard on livers. Unless there's something else going on here, your levels should stabilize once your weight loss slows way down. Your bariatric surgeon should know this. My PCP freaked when she saw my liver enzyme values that first year, too - but she was later told that this was fairly common. When we retested again a few months later, they were normal.

What you wished you would have packed for your hospital stay....
321cathy replied to PNWgrandma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I way overpacked. Used the grippy slipper socks they gave me, used a second gown as “bathrobe”. Used hairbrush, hair elastic, toothbrush and paste. New Yorker magazine was enough distraction from phone. Left the hospital at noon today. Used a big pillow on car ride home which helped when we went over bumps. -
September surgery buddies!!
Hope4NewMe replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The only thing I have had issue with so far is chicken but even that is getting much better. I was hoping for more issues with sweets but my holiday snacking has proven that sweets are still tolerated. So it's up to my will power and that has a proven fail track rate. Luckily I am good about sticking to instructions so I still track everything and keep my calories 1000 or under. I was in a stall and so I even took the last week and a half off from weighing and ate holiday food and treats but I just weighed myself today and I lost 3 pounds. So I think that means that I can have my treats as long as I stick to the calories, protein and water goals I was told. Don't want to jinx it though or get used to the treats which is where I wish there was more consequences to my actions. On a side note, I think my hair is starting to fall out I see more and more of it on my brush and I'm sad. I was hoping I would be lucky and get to skip this phase of the surgery but I guess not. I'm just hoping my hair is ok for my cruise in Feb. I was looking forward to maybe getting to buy a new size of clothes and not hiding as much from the camera but missing hair might be something to hide too. I'm considering getting it cut and seeing if I get more body that way but I'm going to wait as see if it gets worse or if its just a little more hair in the brush. Hope everyone's holidays are going well- take care! -
do you ever just feel huge? lol
SleeverSk replied to liveaboard15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yep I am feeling the same saw some photos of myself from the last few days and thought darn it I am still fat, although no where near as big as I used to be in photos but I hearing you guys. I haven't had any weight loss since the 9 month post op mark either 😕. -
do you ever just feel huge? lol
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to liveaboard15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yep. Dealing with that now. Feel like I haven't made any progress and getting fatter, even though that's not the case. Almost 8 months out and the weight loss has definitely slowed. I'm still trying to focus on the non scale victories, but it gets hard when I don't FEEL like I am making progress. My head thinks I'm 388 pounds and size 28/30 again, even though I'm 285 and size 20. -
Last couple weeks i have felt a lot bigger than usual. Like a lot more fat than usual on the stomach i am like wtf am i gaining more weight? But i check the scale and its the same as it was a couple weeks ago. almost 9 months out the weight loss slowed down dramatically. For the previous 30 days i have only lost maybe 3lb which sucks but it is what it is. I am taking my first flight since weight loss here in the next 2 weeks and i have always bought first class tickets because well coach seats are tiny and horrible for overweight people. Now i can fit in them and my wallet is so happy not to buy a first class ticket lol.

Mexico Bariatric Center vs Kaiser - first hand experience and comparison.
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to baribetty's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
That is terrifying. I had surgery in Mexico, at HospitalBC, and had a better experience than I'd ever had at any US Hospital! I'm so sorry your partner had such an awful experience! Hopefully, they are on the mend and well on their weight loss journey! Thank you for sharing! -
Pureed Stage 14 days post op
meganannie replied to meganannie's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you so much for your kind words! I see a therapist every week and I'm hoping to push through.I know this is just a small part in my whole weight loss journey and eventually I will be able to eat relatively normal stuff in about 6 weeks with the occasional treat here and there. That's what I keep reminding myself that this stage is temporary. I'll be a lot happier 6 months down the road!
