    stage 3 food

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. The plan I was given to follow was: Weeks 1-8: 2 ounces of food per meal x 3 meals per day Weeks 9-15: 3 ounces per meal Months 4-6: 4 ounces per meal Months 7-9: 5 ounces per meal Months 10-12: 6 ounces per meal Months 12-18: 7 ounces per meal Months 18 and beyond: 8 ounces per meal One other point. Protein shakes do not count against your meal allotment. I would blend in a half a banana into my Protein shake and the half a banana does not count against my meals. [but don't take this to the extreme.]
  2. I worked as an RN in a surgical ICU for years and we used to get all the open gastric bypass patients and I saw all the complications which were much more frequent years ago. After the laparoscopic method started becoming the standard, the complications dropped dramatically and I kind of started thinking about it. That was about 10 years ago and after my weight continued to rise, it was now time.
  3. First of all, Congrats! I was banded on 10/6, so I'm a little ahead of you. I was not hungry for the first three or four days. After that, I got a little bit of an appetite, but a little Protein shake would satisfy me. I added a little Fiber powder to my shakes to avoid the constipation thing. As for being a bit loose, you have to remember, you're only taking in liquids and most likely have been for a week or more. You may also have a lactose issue, especially if you are making your shakes with milk. A lactose enzyme pill can help with that. Your appetite does come back, I am in bandster h-e-double toothpicks right now. I can't wait for my first fill. I was hoping to delay it until after the Thanksgiving holiday, but if my surgeon says I can have a fill tomorrow when I see her, I just may do that.
  4. My first fill is 10/4. I feel I will gain what weight I have lost. A little frustrated!!
  5. Just an update and a word of encouragement to all newbies. I'm 6 weeks post op - and since the surgery I lost about 20 lbs. First few weeks on liquids and mushies were kinda sucky - but tolerable. After that - I've been eating healthy foods, mostly lean seafood, veggies, occasional red meat - but very little. I haven't had a fill yet, so without restriction I've been watching my own portions and there have been days where I've eaten more than I should have. I've started on solids sooner than prescribed but I'm pretty well-tuned to what my body wants/needs and because of portion controls I've been able to eat most things. By choice I've eliminated most white carbs: rice, bread, Pasta. I've had a bit of rice and a nibble of bread here and there and I do have oatmeal - otherwise all Protein diet will screw up your BMs and you'll have to supplement Fiber. I really hate supplements or non-natural things, so I've been increasing fiber in my diet while keeping protein high. So far - only slight constipation - I know TMI 3-4 weeks post op I've started working out: cardio about 3-4 times a week and weights on alternating days. That has helped tremendously not so much in increased weight loss as in energy levels and overall healthy feeling. BEST PART - old pants fitting again!! And shirts and jackets too!! 20 lbs is about 1 size in clothes - so I'm back to L from being XL. Yay! Tomorrow I'm going in for the first fill - really excited about that. And a bit anxious because so far I've had nothing "stuck" as there was nothing to obstruct my pipes - now it's going to be different. I'm just hoping that post fill, I'll have just positive experience as I've head up until now. That 20 lbs of weight loss has increased my energy 10-fold - now I'm hoping that the weight loss will continue at a nice, steady pace. By Xmas I intend to look like a Greek god . So - if you just joined, just had a surgery - the first few weeks are tough but not impossible. After that - things are downhill. Stay motivated!! Ahab.
  6. I had GERD before sleeve surgery. In the past, I had some pretty bad bouts of it where it caused chest pain. I also had GERD pretty bad with the band. I'd also go long periods with nothing, so it was a mystery. When I started looking into another bariatric surgery, my surgeon cautioned me, but continued to perform pre-op testing. The doctor felt that my GERD was "situational", meaning that it was related to diet and obesity. So, we decided it was worth the risk, but he warned that there were no guarantees that I wouldn't have GERD after the sleeve. I had surgery on 4/10/18 and about 3 weeks afterwards, I started getting heartburn. I started on Nexium right away and the symptoms are well controlled with it. I wouldn't say that it's severe or "intractable" as my psych evaluator so kindly put it. It's just a little bit of heartburn and if I eat too late in the evening, I will wake with a sore throat (easily remedied by sleeping on an inclined bed). My advice, discuss with your doctor. Every person is different and every person will respond differently.
  7. Hello. I am counting down the remaining days until I am sleeved by Dr Pompa at Limarp on 4/5/10. Anyone else going to be there at that same time?? I am going alone and could really use a buddy.:001_unsure:

    First Appointment Today

The appointment went well. Looks like Gastric Sleeve for me! No surprises occurred. I have to be on a six month medically supervised diet. I also have to lose 10% of my weight. Both for insurance reasons. I see the NOT and the APN on Jul 21st to start my diet. I will have to lose around 36 pounds. I will know the exact poundage on the 21st. That is the magic start date for my insurance. I also had to sign a contract to attend monthly support group sessions for a year post-op. Again insurance. I just love how they try to control everything. I will get most of the pre-op check list done in one day, on August 6th. I have to do some sort of fasting test first thing in the AM (NO coffee DAMN IT!), then I see the NUT for pre and post op diet evaluation, then the shrink for a psych evaluation, then some other stuff I can't remember and don't have my notes in front of me for. Anyway after the that day I will only have an Upper GI and my diet left to finish. The Upper GI has to wait until I drop under 350lbs, because that is the weight limit on the table. WTF is up with that? Oh well, I have to lose it anyway for my 10%. It was a good appointment, now on with the show. I am on my way! Sent from my E2281 using Tapatalk

    Restless Legs Anyone?

2 beautiful blue eyed blond hair boys. David is 14 and Caleb is 10. Weird how much we have in common.
  10. Hi guys. 44 yr old guy new to the site and looking to chat with other men who have had or are getting ready to have the banding procedure. Have finished the 6 months of classes that BC/BS requires and will have a date soon. In February when I started I was 298 and have lost 10 lbs as of yesterday. I suffer from severe sleep apnea and that is the motivation to have the surgery. I'm a dispatch supervisor at 911 and sitting behind a dispatch console for 21 yrs has contributed greatly to my current weight status. Recently am having a case of nerves and I'm worried about chickening out. Like most men...I have committment issues! LOL Seriously, concerned about the changes that I'm going to have do after the surgery. So, feel free to respond. Would really appreciate it!
  11. Ok ladies and gents. I am a big woman married to a lean, muscular stud muffin. I love him dearly but HATE his eating habits. He is one of those people that sits in the chair and never stops eating ( I am not exaggerating) he eats junk for hours. This already gets on my nerves because I know I cannot do that or I will gain 10 pounds a day. Is this going to be a bigger problem post op? I mean am I going to be bitter if he sits there scarfing chips and ice cream? Will this trigger me to want that junk? I'm thinking of making myself a sitting area in our bedroom just so I can avoid him in the evenings.
  12. 10 days to go until the dreaded 23 hour trip to San Diego (and on to Mexicali). Today I started thinking about some of the things I'm really looking forward to after surgery: - Smaller boobies! I've been packing double Gs around for far too long. There is nothing cute or sexy about these big mamas or the ugly bras that cover them. There are 2 styles of bras at Nordstrom that can handle the job and neither of them are cute. Can't wait to burn them! - Seeing results of my workouts at the gym. I'm strong, freakishly strong, and love lifting weights and doing crossfit. I know I have some hardcore muscles underneath the layers of fat and I can't wait to be able to see them! Plus now I feel like a fraud because I work out but don't get any smaller... - Being able to feel comfortable in short sleeves or (gasp!) tank tops. I live on a tropical island and wear long sleeves every day. It sucks. - Wearing a dress and feeling girly. Haven't worn a dress/skirt since about 2004, the last time I was fit and healthy. Can't remember what it's like to feel feminine. - Scuba diving and paddle boarding at a normal weight. It's gonna feel great! It's gonna be so much easier! Two hobbies that I love haven't been much fun lately. I can't wait til it's fun again! - Being more comfortable at the beach. Let's face it: there's nothing relaxing about walking around at the beach at my weight. The only thing that saves me is that the majority of the local population is very overweight as well so I blend in. But still. -Enjoying physical activity again. Bye bye sore feet and back! Hello, long lost hobbies! - Dating. It's been a long, long, long time. I've never been comfortable in my skin since gaining weight and I've become a hermit. I miss men! How about you? What are you looking forward to after surgery?

    Got my surgery date!

I actually had to switch dr's. My original one was pretty much scamming my insurance and kept having me come in and billing for bs stuff. I am PPO, so when I got the bills, I knew either I wasn't there or nothing was done like stated. I started 10/31 with my 6 mo. nutritional. New dr I saw 4/28 & 5/15 so he had 2 extra visits on there), it was submitted 5/28 & approved 6/3. I called Blue Shield Thursday to talk about the last dr, and they told me. And today when I faxed over my pcp approval for the surgery, she set everything up. And said I just need 1 week of protein diet.

    Covered by 2 insurance

i had UHC Only.... i went to the free seminar, got the packet, met with the surgeon, they set up all my appts. I asked for as many in one day as possible. So i did the bar-am swallow, nutritionist, and the nurse in one day. Did the cardo and sleep study in the same day/night. Went from the Cardo to the sleep study that night. got my referral from my family dr that show the 5 year progression of weight gain. They complied all the info along with a surg. day and submitted it to UHC..... got approved the first shot out. I really think having the dr. compile everything and sending in all together with a date was the key. UHC likes to "lose" paperwork. It's easier to lose one sheet than a whole packet...... First dr. visit was in Aug. and my surg. was 11/10/09. Normally, you have to submit to your primary insurance first... if you have insurance on you thru your work, and your husband has insurance on you at his work..... your insurance will be primary for you and your husbands will be secondary. For your husband his work insurance would be primary and your insurance would be secondary. You can't choose which one you want to be primary. UHC required that i call before they started any test so that they would be covered. Hope that helps

ALRIGHT ALL YOU LITTLE SKINNY MINNIES

Oh here is a subject that I love. New York and Company could make me go broke along with H & M. I now own 3 pair of Miss Me jeans. I truly think I am addicted. Never walked into a buckle store before WLS. I own at least 10 winter coats. Lol. Don't get me started on cute boots and shoes. Inhave clothes I haven't taken the tags off from and I just keep shopping and my husband.....he is worse than me. He thińks he is dressing up a Barbie doll. It's sooooo much fun' not to mention expensive. There are so many other stores out there too that I didn't mention. They are all fun. And to accessorize charming Charlie's is fun too.

    SSF Kaiser

i just had surgery at kaiser richmond. We did a pre op diet of 3oz Protein with veggies and a carb (1/2 cup potato/ sweet potato/squash or slice toast whole grain bread less 80 cals) for lunch and dinner, or a fruit instead of veggies at Breakfast. Add to that 64 oz of Water, stop drinking 10 minutes before eating and don't drink until an hour after eating. Chew every bite 30 times. No caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, no Protein Drinks or drinks with more than 20 cals/ cup, no straws, no gum, no Pasta, rice, fried foods, etc. It was hard at first, but i lost hella weight and after a couple of weeks started having a better connection with my hunger and more energy.
  19. I didn't have a goal weight and no one set one for me. I told my doctor my main goal was to be healthy and feel good. He was okay w/that. That happened after about three months when I reached a size 16. I could've been 'content' with that but I was still losing so I dared to hope for a 14. Then a 12. Then a 10. The rest has been pretty unbelievable for me. An 8?!!!! And now a 6?!!!!!!! Somebody pinch me, I have to be dreaming!! I've spent the last few months walking around in a constant state of happy disbelief, constantly looking into mirrors to see if it's real. :-)
  20. Got to tell you, I really didn't expect it to suck quite this much. I was okay days one and two, but here I am on day three and my stomach won't stop growling. I'm having my protein drinks plus an additional 100 plus oz of fluid every day. My first day was thrown off because I found out that my chewable vitamin has 1g of carbs. Flintstones has 3 per pill so watch out if you are using those. I had to redo my whole plan for the day because I already had planned out the max of 30 carbs. Beef broth makes me feel like I am getting something I want and I have been plowing through that stuff. Also, loving the Jello. I think whats bothering me the most about today is that my brain is starting to feel fuzzy from extreme lack of carbs. Took me 40 minutes to pay bills today instead of 10. I feel like I can't form a coherent sentence half the time. I know it is just going to get worse too. I have been sleeping a lot of my liquid diet time away. I have to take muscle relaxers for a problem in my back and with no food in my stomach I go into auto nap mode within 30 minutes of having taken my pill. I know this is going to get better and not worse. I just needed to whine. Anyone have a particular food they couldn't get out of their head? I'm really not thinking about anything but avocados. lol I guess that could be a heck of a lot worse!

Just adding some info to my journal. As of today I way 210, so I have lost 146Lbs., so far. Still a long way to go. I would like to see about 135; but if I end up settleing for a little more, I'll take it. But I will still try to go lower. I am also in a size 18, some cloths are 16, but that's rare so ,I'm not counting that, just putting it in the computer. On 02/05/07 I go in the Hospital again. This time for a Total Knee Replacement. This is surgery #2 in a 2 part surgery. First was the Lap Band, and it turned out great. I got more thean I bargained for though. So did Dr. Jeffrey Genaw "Genious at work!" He had me on the table from 11:30 A.M. - 4:30 P.M., thats a long time. Especially when the band takes about 30 minutes.#1. He froze 1 Lymph Node, pulled it out, Bi-Opseyed it, and it came back normal, "CANCER HE WOULD HAVE CLOSED ME UP" then did the same to the other one, again normal. "Thank God!!!" These were located in the Groin, so you can only imagine the pain. #2. Old Scar Tissue Removal, From Gallbladder, exploratory surgery, and Hernia Repair. #3. Hernia Repair "He dug it out!" "ouch". #4. Last but not least, he put in the Lap Band. "finally"! And I just love it! I've lost 22Lbs since 10/31/06. But I'll take it. I spent the night in the hospital, and went home the next day. I no longer have to take Prevacid, I take Pepcid Complete, and Flintstone Chewables Complete/Choline. So I get my Vitamins, Calcium, and won't have a problem with Acid- Reflex any more. My Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Denniss Kelly told me that unless I lost weight threw surgery, that he would never touch me. To high of a risk, and the knee would never last. That was 10/05. I saw him 11/06 He said "Hy Skinney" I said not yet, but i'm working on it. I asked him about my knee? He said youre gonna get one, youv'e done everything we asked, so lets get some x-rays. He told me the knee was gone, and he doesn't understand how I am even walking? Trust me very carefully! So he said lets pencil in a date. I chose 2 dates, had to see what was gonna be best for the hussband. "time off, etc." I decided on February 5th. 2007. That's 6 day's from today; I'll be glad when it's done. 0 ipb.global.registerReputation( 'rep_post_2957', { app: 'blog', type: 'entry_id', typeid: '2957' }, parseInt('0') ); Share This Entry: ipb.sharelinks.url = "http://www.lapbandtalk.com/blog/225/entry-2957-2nd-surgery/"; ipb.sharelinks.title = "2nd. Reminiscing about binges...

Dont go there..lol I bought my family a wurzel bread to go with some butternut Soup I made an for some reason I had to eat bread today!I dont think I've had any bread for 10 months now. Of course once I started I couldnt stay away from it.AND IT STILL MAKES ME FEEL AS BAD ABOUT MYSELF as in the BAD OLD days! I hate the fact that carbs can get me so out of control! Back to good old solid Proteins.Makes me feel goooood! Bingeing sucks, even sleeve style binge!
  23. Tomorrow @10...this is just driving me crazy. I hate waiting. I hate not knowing if they'll get me in before the end of December. For some reason I'm feeling depressed more. I should be happier I'm almost there. I'm not afraid of the surgery. I guess it's just that we're struggling right now with me out of work and I've been tracking all my food but I'm not seeing any difference. I'm usually under 1200 cal. I just want results it's been a rough week, drama, every time I turn around. My dogs health is going downhill fast. I've been chasing him around with a mop and his leash. The insurance company took out a large pymt 3 days early and bounced my checking acct. Just keeping decent food on the table is a struggle. I had a great pcp and she left the practice and the new doctor is an idiot. I'm in constant pain with my back and she isn't listening to me. It's the anniversary of my mother's death and my son's birthday at the same time. I'm sorry I didn't mean this to be a rant our I would have put it in that category. I just don't know how to get out of this funk. I'm sorry y'all. I'm just having a pity party.

    Major Diarrhea 4 days post-op

hi there, i had the same issue - 'd' - for about 8 to 10 days after surgery. then it stopped and now things are more normal. i was very concerned because we are supposed to stay hydrated. i too am lactose intolerant but have been crushing up lactaid pills and using lactaid milk or even Water to mix my whey Protein drinks. i can't have soy or i'd have tried that. i still am having the same stuff now and the 'd' is gone - so i don't think it was the lactose issue. i used chewable pepto tablets to help when it was overwhelming me. that helped too. hang in there, it'll go away. make sure you keep up on fluids - my dr. recommended that i sip gatorade.
