    Worried mom

He had better consult with his surgeon. I have had many of those things and I am a bypasser with a stricture, food can't pass through. This is usually a gastric bypass problem but not all VSG are exempt. And if one variety doesn't work, tastes so bad you can't stand it, there are many others to chose from. The kind that works for me isn't one you commonly hear of. After 10 months of protein shakes one does become a connoisseur, I finally found one that doesn't choke me up, has flavors I can stand and doesn't totally break the bank. And lastly your son may have developed a temporary allergy to some of the milk proteins, there are soy-based, or plant- based, personally I don't like them as well but they are a total God-Send for many. There are always answers to every question, just not always easy to find.

    Hello out there

Read the above and take my other hand and hold on tight. The three of us can do this. When that food craving hits change the channel. Think of something else. Pre-plan what you will eat. When possible pre measure your food and have it ready to go. I have pouches of tuna in the cabinet. Pre measured portions of cottage cheese and yogurt in the refrigerator. I keep the family's Snacks out of my site. Portion control is big for me. I can easily overeat if I don't weigh and measure. YOU GOT THIS! Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

    Hello out there

Okay, take my hand. You can do this. We can do this. It is a new day and new month. Remember your reasons for having surgery. I say to myself when I'm tempted to eat too much "nothing tastes as good as thin feels." Drink a glass of Water or cup of tea and really focus on resisting the craving for more food or unhealthy food. BE STRONG. YOU GOT THIS. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

    Pain!!

I had my gallbladder out 10 years ago so that's not it. It seems to have lessoned, haven't had a shooting pain in an hour. After I started passing some gas after the colace so I think it might be extreme gas and lack of BM. I only ate the chilli that was different then any other day. But my dietician had said it was ok. She specifically mentioned Wendy's chilli. But it is heavier than anything I've had yet so maybe just the difference in food and lack of BM. That's what I'm hoping. Did laps around my house and that seemed to help tpp. Thanks for the replies. I love how you can throw out anything on this forum and you get support.
  5. Check your Protein powders. I had violent diahrea from around day 10 post op. I discovered that the Protein powder that I was using was the culprit. I had to switch to Muscle Milk Light in the ready to drink because it was lactose free. After a few weeks I was able to tolerate the Optimum Nutrition powder again. I still used unsweetened soymilk or almond milk. I do fine with yogurt, cheese etc. Good luck!
  6. Someone posted that as women lose weight they release a lot of estrogen as it is trapped in fat cells. As the fat cells are shed they release estrogen into your blood stream, leading you to feel emotional, moody etc. similar to pregnancy hormones. I can personally attest to the fact that I have been more emotional, sensitive and have a much shorter fuse than usual. Since my hubby pointed it out I have been trying to be more conscious of it. I also have a very high stress job and between having surgery on 9/6 and my brother passing on 10/1; my priorities have really shifted. Family and self first.

    Cost

I am going to Dr. Ortiz for my banding on 10-31. His cost is $7950.00 right now. They say it is on special but it seems to be the norm. I have researched my hind end off and I feel 1000% confident in my decision! Good luck to you! I am super excited!

    Goal and a little!

Thanks guys! I'll have to look for some before pics (kinda hard to find one since I ran away from a camera) lol. I had surgery 2/28/13. Took me 10 1/2 months to get here but I don't mind. I don't consider myself a slow loser either. 100lbs in 10 months sounds pretty good to me. I'll go work on the pics now.

    First Fill

My first fill went well too. The water gulping while he did the fill was unexpected. And, it felt weird when it got to the full point and backed up. I liked that way of doing it. It seems like it was just right. The Dr did the fill. An assistant found the port on the screen and cleaned the area and I think put the pain med in. After the Dr got the needle in the port, I stood up and started drinking while he inserted the saline. Now I stay on liquids today and mushy food tomorrow and hopefully have good restriction! He said to go back in 6-8 weeks. I made an app for 7 weeks. He said I will be down 10-12 pounds when I return. Isn't he the positive thinker!! I sure hope he's right. I'm going to do my part.

    Unprofessional Or Within Professional Guidelines

The only reason Im going to these classes is because its required to get a referral for Bariatric surgery. At that Intro class was the first time I encounter the stigma associated with WLS. After reading so many posts on this forum about I shouldn't be surprise. Even my PCP there seemed against it. He said no, no, no do MOVE, it works. When I just starred at him he then said I have to lose 10 % of my weight first. When actually it's 5%. To avoid encountering more bad attitudes toward WLS Im going to switch to TeleMOVE which is 82 days. Hopefully after I complete the program my pcp will do the referral. I'm just worried that he won't do it. I never thought a doctor would be against WLS. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

    Bariatric Surgery and Alcoholism

Anecdotal experiences of individuals are often attention-grabbing. However, the following facts about alcohol abuse and dependence among the general population and among WLS populations offer context for the experience of the WLS patient shown in the above video. Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in the U.S. 17.6 million people, or one in every 12 adults, suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence along with several million more who engage in risky drinking patterns that could lead to alcohol problems. More than half of all adults have a family history of alcoholism or problem drinking, and more than seven million children live in a household where at least one parent is dependent or has abused alcohol. https://ncadd.org/for-the-media/alcohol-a-drug-information Here are the findings from one study published in 2012 about transfer alcohol addiction after WLS (in this case RnY): In addition to the potential for weight regain, WLS patients, RYGB patients in particular, are at risk for emergence of alcohol use disorders by 2 years post-WLS, with 16.5% of patients engaging in hazardous alcohol use and nearly 10% having an alcohol use disorder [37] http://turner-white.com/pdf/jcom_oct13_bariatric.pdf The same study referenced these earlier study's findings: In a large-scale longitudinal study, rates of alcohol use disorders did not differ from 1 year before to 1 year after surgery, but by 2 years post-WLS the rate of problematic alcohol use increased significantly. Specifically, drinking ≥ 4 times per week and meeting alcohol dependence criteria both increased from about 3% to 5% of patients from baseline to year 2, and any form of alcohol use disorder increased from 7.6% to 9.6% during this same time frame. Notably, the escalation of problematic alcohol use was significant only among RYGB patients, not those who underwent adjustable gastric banding.

    1 month post op

I'm not quite a month post-op, but I'll try to answer your vitamin question. At my clinic, they recommend 2 Flintstomes complete chewables, D3, calcium citrate. (I take 3 Bariatric Advantage chewables a day) , B12 sublingual and B-complex or B-50 (I open the capsule and mix with unsweetened applesauce). Molly 10/2/13

    Stricture

Oh goodness. Mine started about 3 weeks post op. I was only able to drink and eat Soup. Anything that needed chewing- even puréed things would get stuck. The pain was nearly unbearable, horrible nausea, and the food would often come back up. My doctor wouldn't so a scope until his patients are 6 weeks post op. I was so frustrated with that but had no choice but to wait. At 6 weeks I called to make appt and he wanted me to go to ER to get tests done first. I went in on a Wednesday afternoon (this was 7/10 so not long ago). They did barium swallow test and gastrografin too. The barium test showed the stricture as the tablet got stuck. They also put me on fluids as I was so dehydrated my pee was brown and I had a UTI. They admitted me. I had the scope done this next morning. They found and stretched the stricture. They didn't let me go home until Friday as they wanted to make sure I could eat before I went home. So I ended up staying 2 nights which was more than I stayed for my bypass! I still deal with nausea and some vomiting when food doesn't agree but things aren't getting stuck anymore. They told me once you have a stricture you may need 2-3 scopes to totally keep it open. So far mine is doing fine with the one scope. But it's only been a few weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't come back! Good luck to you! I hope that helps you. I don't think most people have to stay that long. Mine may have been because of UTI and dehydration too- I ended up getting 6 bags of fluids. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

    Things I Want.....

I'm 10 months out now and plan to start visiting surgeons at the end of this year (between a year& a yr 1/2 out). I'm wanting breast lift w/ implants & TT first (possibly lower body lift). Then later arms and thighs done. I also don't have children (and don't plan on having any anytime soon- maybe 6-10 years from now). I figured I deserve to look like a "normal" person for the rest of my 20's for sure. lol

    Self-Pay / IRA?

Yes... if you're younger than 59 1/2 years old you will have to pay normal income tax plus a 10% penalty. If you have the option of a home equity line of credit that may be a better option.
  18. I'm still new here & still reading some of the stories and still pretty new to the surgery part (I had surgery on August 3rd). I had a really hard time early on with food, and even still some days I find it very hard to eat anything without feeling disgusted. My weight loss has been steady (it has slowed but my dr said that that is normal). That being said I have worked at eating better, and being 4 months post-op now it is much easier on me as far as eating goes. Has anyone experienced a gain of just a few pounds despite not changing anything eating habit-wise? I had a small gain (3 pounds, give or take), and I figured at this stage is abnormal. I have recently begun exercising daily (walking on my treadmill, using weights). I have an autoimmune disorder that causes pain/stiffness in my lower spine/hips/knee that makes it so I cannot do strenuous workouts, so I have to stick to walking. Could the adding of exercise cause such a small gain? I'm sorry if it seems trivial, and I suppose to a lot it might be a petty thing to worry about, but in my mind 2 or 3 pounds can (and has) turned into 5 and 10 pounds if you get the idea. My next appointment isn't until February so of course, I will talk to my doctor about it, but what are some of your experiences at this stage? Thanks for any info/advice!
  19. Hi Sweetp31...I just had the procedure done on 5/10/10 and my journey is also beginning. How are you doing on the liquids? I am having a very hard time.
  20. I agree with James Marusek Stalls are so common that someone here coined the phrase "Embrace the Stall". I am 10 weeks out and just got out of my second one that lasted 3 weeks. My shape keeps getting smaller, and I feel better, just the weight loss is stop and go. I have learned to take it as part of the long term process, and now sweat the short term scale.

    I'm Home

First let me say Thank You for all your prayers. My surgery was Friday 9/16. Here is my story and I'm sticking to it. First I am still very sore and still alot of gas. My surgery had a few complications. I have a hypo-Thyroid so this played a little issue with the surgery but not bad. Then they discovered that I was bleeding under the skin and had to put a drain and bag on. I only say this so everyone knows that not every surgery is perfect. That being said I do have to say that outside of the complications it really was a wonderful experience. The people from Belite were there with me all the time. They were great and compassionate and honestly caring. JoAnne from Belite was actually there and when she came to see me after my surgery, she immediately ran to the Dr's and told them that I did not look well. I had every Dr and nurse in my room. I tried to get up severval times after surgery to walk to relieve the gas but as I sat on the end of the bed I fell back and passed out. They were there to fix the situation and since I had to stay in bed...no walking,,,hence a slower recovery. Belite was there to pick me up, transfer me to the hospital in Tijuana for pre-op then take me to the hotel for the night. We met with the surgery team that night at the hotel and they answered every question we had. INT hospital is one of the cleanest hospitals I have ever seen and I was a little hesitant of going to Tijuana. We felt very safe. I actually felt more safe there then in some of the US cities. And we were full-time RV'ers for 10 years so I have seen alot of cities. Dr Rodriguez and his surgical team were the tops in their field. We are now thinking of going back in a few months for my husband and will not hesitate to use Belite and Dr Rodriguez. Any questions I haven't covered pleas ask. Everyone else that had their surgery done the same day as me had no problems. I think my problems were a result of a combination of a 58 yr old women 5'0 245 lbs and with a Hypo-Thyroid problem. I really can't say enough good about, INT Hospital, Dr Rodriguez and his team, and all my new friends at Belite....Thank you especially JoAnne, Jamie, Amy, and Alberta (driver) Good Luck to all approaching their surgery and my prayers will be with you all. Janet
  24. So I just had my surgery 10/10/17 and boy is this challenging already. Of course with only being a couple of days in I don’t know everything, but when am I gonna truly get the hang of this? When it comes to liquids I sip, but I don’t feel like I’m getting enough fluids in...I feel the same with with eating too! I’m eating more than I did at the hospital, but I’m not sure how much I should be consuming. I’m scared that I’m going to over do it and make myself sick. I’m not filling full on this liquid diet, is that normal? Also to switch topics did anyone one else have an incision in their belly button? It’s the worst pain ever!!! The other incisions I have are manageable, but this is extreme. It makes the simplest movements so painful [emoji17]
