So now that I'm maintaining a healthy size, I have an issue.

@@LipstickLady I have to see photos of your closet. My goal reward was a closet make over. I had my hubby hang a crystal chandelier. As a normal thin person, Not changing sizes helps me stay in maintenance. I don't want to replace my clothing because of weight gain.(see me justify my shopping addiction) I'm recently fell in love with Italian clothing. Simple with a statement piece (like shoes). A bit sophisticated to sexy. Summer clothing is unbelievably fun. No more hiding and covering up.(except for my loose skin areas) I have to confess the bottom row of my closet contains compression running shirts. My favorite second hand find was a pair of Betty Rides snowboarding pants. I'm not sure when my shopping will slow down. I'm making up for lost time. My clothing options were so limited before.
  2. That's a good plan:) I know I made myself crazy with the scale in the beginning. Right now you want to focus on recovering from surgery and your nutrition/hydration. If you do that, the weight loss will happen. At 3 years out, I weigh a few times per week. That may be too much for some, but I use to just ignore my weight and the scale. So if I'm not weighing often, it's a slippery slope for me. Once I got to my goal weight, I gave myself a 5-7 pound "buffer" that I wouldn't worry too much, but I don't allow myself to get beyond that. That way I'm catching any weight gain before it because overwhelming to me. That's a good plan:) I know I made myself crazy with the scale in the beginning. 5. Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and I wanted to share with you all my gastric bypass journey thus far. I've pretty much been overweight since my two pregnancies. And it wasn't until I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia that the weight really started to pour on and life became a constant battle. I was on 5 different medications, which really didn't help with the weight gain. After about 3 years of medication increases, I decided enough was enough! I began researching Gastric Bypass on the internet. I had the support of my family and friends and my rheumatologist. I sought out a doctor in Montreal and this is where my journey began. I'm 5'1" and weighed 245 lbs. It was the first time I was told I was considered morbidly obese. I cried right there and then. Nobody wants to hear those words. I said "OK" let's get me healthy again...for my children but most importantly, myself. My surgery was booked on June 25th, 2015. That is the day that is tattooed on my wrist...the day my life changed...for the better. I did have post-op complications which turned out to be apparently life threatening. The doctor had accidentally put one stitch too many which closed off the intestine. What happens is that I couldn't keep anything down and was vomiting profusely... But the worst part was that all the (excuse the wording) shit that was supposed to be coming out down there was coming up through my mouth...I know...gross! Anywho, long story short...I was really ill and from all the constant vomiting, I developed 2 giant hernias. Second surgery July 9th, with a full on large incision right down my belly. Problem solved! Other than a few pains here and there and constant nausea, I am 10 months post-op and I've lost 102 lbs! I started in a size 22 pants and I am now in a size 8! I am currently on the waiting list for plastic surgery. I've gone from 5 different fibro meds to only 1! I'm healthier and happier. Life has new meaning for me. I was given a second chance and will forever be greatful, complications and all. Totally worth it in the end. Zero regrets! Happy to share with you all! 6. First of all, you look great! But you're correct on the assumption that your habits will eventually cause weight gain, because they will. There will come a time when we will be able to eat closer to normal portions again, therefore the math speaks for itself. Also, most people I know who have kept their weight off years out stay very active moving or do have a steady excersise routine. In my opinion, the easiest way to break the sugar habit is to just stop the sugar habit. Sugar causes cravings. No sugar, no cravings. I eat very little to no processed sugar and food for that reason alone. It's not because I'm so disciplined, I just find its easier to stay away from if you don't have it. And I HATE having to detox off of it. I feel like a heroin attic when I do, lol. Being aware that your habits could be better is the first step. Just tweak a few things and you'll feel better and more in control. And yes, get additional help if needed whether it's from books, therapy, support groups, or whatever.
  7. @@mmy, When I first enquired about WLS last year, May 2015, I was at 32 BMI. I was already freaking out re my rapid weight gain, of 28 kg ..... I never had this problem before until 2014 Routine tests showed thyroid disease, so I had to put off my WLS for about 9 months, till my thyroid stabilised ..... By late February 2016, I managed to pile on another 12-13 kg, and my weight ballooned to 101 kg , BMI 37.1 My surgeon would have operated on me at 32 BMI, to prevent future health risks and to help my deteriorating emotional state. Unfortunately, with my Hyperthyroid (Graves Disease), it was too risky to be operated on. All up, I put on 41 kg (90 Ibs) in a 2 year period (was always slim before). If I did not have this surgery, I probably would be Double my normal weight now ..... I felt I was the only person on the planet that was obese with Hyperthyroid .... even though I now know that I had this disease most of my life, and it kept me slim until 2014. I have no regrets, I lost good amount of weight 7 weeks post op, for my height. I still have a long way to go, but each day is bit better .... My NUT revised my goal weight to 68-70 kg, and I was Not happy with that. I downgraded my goal weight to 65 kg (from 60 kg) I am starting to look better, my face is changing, my aches and pains and other health issues with my rapid weight gain are improving, I am happier, and life is getting better. Good Luck and Best Wishes
  8. My whole life I grew up living in fear. We lived in a bad neighborhood and young males were killed frequently. The sound of a pop or firecracker would make me dive to the floor. Spent a lot of time indoors because I was afraid to go outside. Probably how my weight gain started. Also find this walking down the street thing interesting. Here it is generally considered safer to walk close to the street or even in the street.

    Weight gain

Steroids/prednisone can do great things, but they also cause weight gain and bulk. Stay on your program, and once the steroids are done, you'll likely lose weight and see less bulk.
  10. I had gastric sleeve oct 29 2014 and still have about 50 pds to loose. I have an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and weakness in muscles. Anyway had a bad flare up and have been on 40 mg of prednisone for past month. I haven't gained any weight according to scale but I can tell in my clothes I have gained ... Very discouraged. I am praying that when I get off prednisone it will help. Has anyone experienced this ? Thanks Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. Not a bad glitch, but because I have new insurance since my surgery, I had to switch to a different clinic and already have an appointment to see the surgeon there AND the NUT on the same day. This clinic has a superb reputation and I know many people who had successful surgery with this surgeon, so I'm happy I was able to see him. I loved my surgeon, but the NUT affiliated with him does not take my new insurance and the new place will give me unlimited NUT appts at no cost if I am their patient. I am waiting for a bunch of stuff they are mailing me, including some stuff from the NUT that is reset info! WHOOP! i'm happy to be refocused.
  12. I'm 4 weeks post op today. Yesterday was the first day I was able to get in the recommended intake of 600 to 800 calories. I was pretty excited. That was until I got on the scale this morning. I've gained 4 pounds. . Since starting this whole process, all I've heard from acquaintances is that I either won't loose, or I'll gain it all back. I WANT TO CRY!!!!Please tell me I'm freaking out for no reason.
  13. Hi, I had my surgery in March 2013, so just had my 3 year anniversary. I unfortunately have gained half back of what I had lost (16 kilos) which I am very frustrated and unhappy about. I thought the sleeve would cure all my dieting worries and that I'd never have to watch what I ate ever again...how dumb can I be? It is a uphill struggle EVERY day and I get bad heartburn too because I eat all the time. I used to graze before the surgery, but now its all the time because of the smaller amount I can eat I just chomp, chomp and chomp away. I am trying to come up with strageties, like at work, I need to bring in loads of healthy food so when I graze at least it'll be healthy. But at night is my downfall, infront of the tv...ugh! So i have come up with an idea that after my evening meal I will properly brush and floss my teeth as if going to bed to try and prevent me from eating again that night. Am going to give it a go tonight for the first time. I'll try anything. Its just I can't seem or want to stop eating. I wish I'd had surgery on my brain too aswell as my stomach. I was doing okay intially and then went on a few cruises and never lost the weight gained on them and just kept gaining. I hope this answers your question. Its bloody hard I am very envious of people who seem to be able to control their food cravings and grazing capacity. Good luck to you

Beginners Guide to Running for the Obese

Any tips on weight gain right after a race? I'm assuming it's still a lot off fluids floating around and my muscles are all still definitely inflamed! ((And oh so sore!)) I'm up 2lbs since last week. Nothing crazy. Drinking lots of Water and indulging in a massage this morning. Hoping to see a drop soon....between walking to and from the corrals and the race I logged 17 miles on Sunday! Insane.

    Gym life

I was 405 the day of surgery. I'm 38 and was a full scholarship Division 1 football player in the 90's. I was always in great shape but my significant weight gain started after I had three hip replacements on the same hip a couple years ago. I was non weight bearing for several months and gained significant weight throughout the recovery. I am also 6'3 and have quite a bit of muscle mass! I walked for at least an hour a day starting the day after surgery and started working out hard three weeks ago. I am working on losing weight and getting my hips back in shape at the same time. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  17. BigViffer has some good thoughts. Since you need the calories, go for the full fat cheese, yogurt and milk. Avocado is good, so is Peanut Butter. Use a little olive oil in your cooking. One of my kids has feeding and weight gain issues. I make sure to keep Greek yogurt with fat in it around just for him. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. About a million times so far. Especially after losing 8lbs this first week on my liver shrink diet. Sitting here thinking "Now... I can do this on my own, and at this pace, I could hit my goal weight without surgery." Then I remember every single failed attempt from the past, and my hormonal issues that have contributed to the weight gain, and all of the other factors. Then I un-second-guess myself. [emoji4] I'm nervous, but mostly that surgery goes okay and I come home safely to my family. Everything after that is something I know I'll acclimate to in time. This is all for a healthier me for my family, so that's what I always come back around to.
  19. Yup, this! I have a lap band and my weight loss rate is much slower than someone who had RNY. For one thing, I'm not 100% restricted yet - probably about halfway there as I can still eat ~2500 calories a day. But that's less than my standard 3500 calorie diet so I consider that to be a win either way. It's enough of a difference that I lose about a pound a week. I'd lose about a pound a week through diet and exercise alone. The only difference (right now) is that I'm not suffering like I did before I had my band placed. Weight loss used to be torture. Now it just kind of happens, which is great! I'm looking forward to increased restriction so I can lose weight even faster but for now 1 pound a week is better than 0 pounds a week, or worse, weight gain! Now if you have RNY, you get the benefits of reduced absorption in addition to restriction and that helps the weight come off faster. So yes, it depends on the type of surgery you have. Regardless of what type it is, you will lose weight and just remember that any loss is good. Don't get discouraged if it's not as fast as you hope While it would be absolutely lovely to get to my goal weight in a couple months it just ain't gonna happen. It took a long time for me to get this fat, and it'll take a long time before I'm normal again.

    Thyroid

It's common for low thyroid to impede weight loss or cause weight gain, but it doesn't necessarily work that way. Have you been working with an endocrinologist? Has your dosage been switched around for four months at a time? My doctor told me it takes about that long to know the result of a change. After nearly 30 years taking synthroid or L-thyroxine, my numbers went wildly cuckoo a few years ago. My primary referred me to an endocrinologist who changed my dose a couple of times. I've been in the normal range for a decent time now and see him every four months for blood work. We're still tweaking slightly. It's a good thing I like the endocrinologist greatly and we have good conversations about all sorts of things. Otherwise I'd resent having to go in that often. I hope you get to a good place. It seems unreasonable to me that your medical plan might deny you for the reason you mention, especially since your doctors will submit letters in support.

    Thyroid

My BMI is high enough. They can deny me because my thyroid levels are not in the normal range, even with medication, which causes weight gain. They can say WLS won't be successful. Hopefully I'm just stressing because of being so close. Sent from my SM-G900P using the BariatricPal App
  22. Ok, so I think my weight gain began when I hit puberty before my peers and was ashamed of my excessively huge bust...it may or may not have ended up excessively huge, but it certainly was for other ten year olds, and now, with my weight (about 280 lbs), my boobs are still immense and immensely uncomfortable. Question: after WLS, does the bust lose weight too?
  23. I agree. Please resist the urge to restrict your food (especially your protein) when you are on a stall. It is counterintuitive, but restricting is the worst thing you can do. Embrace the Stall! http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall Thank you so much for that link. I have read it a few times and it really helps. I believe that we are very (too?) focused on our progress and any stall or tiny weight gain can end up in a moral drama . Good news is that I am on a stall but o can fit in trousers I could not close last week. Something is still happening!
  24. My "Ah-Ha!" moment was when I gained weight rapidly after meeting my now boyfriend. I haven't always been big. I wasn't super skinny but I had curves and a healthy BMI. It wasn't until Mid last year that I started gaining. Many things factor in though. The fact that I can no longer fit in my size 10 jeans that I fit in last year. Matter of fact, none of my clothes fit me anymore. Ive had to buy jeans just because of the weight gain. I feel super uncomfortable and miserable daily because I am not myself. I also don't feel its fair to my SO that I have let my weight get out of control. He loves me regardless and doesn't want me to get WLS but I want to be the same person he met a year ago physically. The weight gain has change my mood considerably, as well. So I guess to pinpoint my moment id say it was when I didn't feel like myself anymore.
  25. I'm struggling to not eat all the things in these weeks pre-surgery. I don't have my date yet, but probably some time in May. My surgeon didn't require any weight loss pre-surgery and I almost wish he had. Anyone experience this? It's like I'm saying goodbye to large quantities! Help!
