    Considering DS

I had the DS a month and one week ago. I’m still new to all of this but I don’t regret my decision. Like a previous poster said the sleeve part is what controls hunger and it’s the malabsorption part that helps you lose more weight. If you do get the revision you do have to make sure you are taking all your vitamins everyday. With the DS you only absorb 40% of the calories you eat from complex carbs and protein, 20% from fat and 100% of the calories from simple carbs and sugar. So you will have to learn to control your cravings for the sugary simple carbs. Before surgery my surgeon did say that there is the possibility of the surgery working too well and you lose too much weight. He did tell me there are ways to revise the surgery so the part where the food and digestive juices mix is longer and the key is to keep your surgery team aware you are having problems when you begin to have them. I have learned a lot about the surgery from shrinking violetds on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfDprJMbSy-J3MILnRPT8Yw She is currently maintaining and had the DS.

    POST OP DRAIN

Depends on the doctor. I was told usually sleeve patients don't have drains but they gave a lot of lap band revisions to bypass drains. Sometimes it's gone before discharge and others have to go home with it. I didn't have a drain or a catheter when I woke in the hospital.
  3. I haven't heard of many people getting a catheter... where was your surgery? Congrats on your revision! I will be joining you on the sleeve side soon!

    I give up

I have BCBS FL but there are lots of different plans. My employer chose a plan that doesn't cover it. I understand, there are only 30 employees and we have no monthly premium. Anywho, I had Dr. Alejandro Lopez do my surgery. It cost $4,500. I did not have any other issues like hernia and I wasn't a revision surgery so there weren't any extra costs. While I was happy with the outcome, I believe it is very very important to do your own research and find a surgeon you feel most comfortable with. There are lots of excellent surgeons in Mexico, you just have to find one you are comfortable with. Hospital is also important. There's a brand new gorgeous hospital there, I can't remember what it's called but it is supposed to be a state of the art facility.
  6. It's been quite a process but, I've finally been given a date for my revision surgery! June 6th they told me today. Zoiks, saw the nutritionist at 8am this morning and within hours after her telling me she gives her approval I got the call. June 6th is the date so far, just need to get a medical surgery approval letter from my PCP and approval from the insurance company. Preop work May 21st and off I go. I'm excited and nervous which I know is natural. Still a scary thought having my inner works re-worked but, I know it's the best choice for me. I did well with my lapband until the dang thing slipped TWICE! So I know I can do this and the proper way to eat etc. I'm so looking forward to losing these extra love handles and getting to a healthier me. Thank you for your support and friendship here and I look forward to our continued journies together. Crossing my fingers for all the paperwork to go as it has to

    Side Sleeping ?

Whew girl!! I'm a Lap revision patient too and last night I fell asleep hard on my side for a couple of hours. I woke up very very sore on the side my port was on. I think your right about maybe us Lap people have a harder time side sleeping .
  8. My understanding from the doc is that revising to bypass is not ideal for much weight loss. If you have reflux that is something else to consider however.
  9. After being banded with plication in August 2012, I have been having quite a bit of pain for the last three months. I went to my surgeon who acted like he doesn't want to bother with me. Just real rude and acted like my pain was no big deal. So I saw another surgeon who was kind enough to take me on. My body is rejecting the lapband. It seems it doesn't like having a foreign object in it. So my band is going to be removed and I will be revised to the sleeve all in one surgery. I have lost weight with the band but my body doesn't like it.
  10. my revision is July 15 also! revision is due to horrific Gerd.
  11. I honestly have never heard, met, talked to, read about anyone having a remotely bad experience with Dr. Aceves. Nothing negative pops into my head about Dr. Alvarez either. I can share my opinion with you. I was a revision patient, I have some medical issues that can cause complications outside of the actual surgery, I researched Mexico and US surgeons, and at the end of the day, Dr. Aceves would have been my surgeon if insurance would not have come through on my revision, and if I needed to travel outside the US. It was a comfort level thing for me. All the research led me to him, his staff, the facilities he operates out of, the sheer number of successful revisions he'd performed, plus additional years of surgical experience that he has under his belt, all contributed to my choice. I had some stateside surgeons picked out as well that are located in Texas because that is where my family lives. The aftercare that is available to you with Dr. Aceves via email and phone was big contributing factor to making him my choice for MX surgeons. Plus, the 3 months f/u labs and upper gi that he offers and recommends gave me another level of comfort with him. I mean seriously, how many MX surgeons offer aftercare at all? Not many. Just my 2cents.

    RNY to DS revision

We don't look at revision as a "type" of surgery. You "revise" from one surgery to another surgery. We plan on adding a feature in the near future which will allow you to list all your WLS surgeries on your profile. In the interim, members should select the latest surgery type they revised to.

    RNY to DS revision

It would be good to start looking at it as a type of surgery Alex Brecher. The biggest issue with a RNY to DS revision is that it IS the most complicated of all revisions and is only done by a handful of surgeons in the US. You can't go to just any revision surgeon. Just because a surgeon says that they do revisions, does not automatically mean that they can do THIS surgery. It is VERY IMPORTANT for individuals thinking about this revision to get an experienced surgeon. And, like I said, there are only a handful... Dr. Keshishian, located in California Dr. Rabkin, located in California Dr. Simper, located in Utah Dr. Elariny, located in Virginia Dr. Roslin, located in New York Dr. Buchwald, located in Minnesota

    RNY to DS revision

I agree that revising from one surgery to another can be quite difficult. You really need a master surgeon when dealing with a revision to DS. Once the surgeon completes the revision, you're left with a DS. Technically your first surgery was an RNY and you revised to a DS. Please correct me if I'm not understanding you. I'm familiar with all the surgeons on your list. They're the best of the best when it comes to DS.
  15. I had the RNY in 2005. And as expected the pouch does tend to stretch over time. At the time in 2013 I chose to do band over bypass because I had loss some restriction. The D-Switch was not being done then and was the band only revision option in my area. It wasn't until last year that I was made aware the D-switch could be done. So I decided to have the band removed and do the d-switch with the intention of not continuing to gain more weight. Since the D-Switch I’ve been pretty stable but I was hoping to see more of a progression. The reason I made the post was in hopes to find someone in a similar situation. I am re-learning my body again. I’m not looking to do another surgery
  16. Hi there! I was revised from band to sleeve on 9.15.10 - and sounds like you and I had similar experiences. Though I've never needed to be hospitalized with being too tight, I certainly know how it feels to not be able to drink simple Water. If you have any questions, I'm always happy to answer any. The sleeve saved me!! I don't regret my revision even a tiny bit.

September 11Th Kaiser - Dr. Zane

Oh congratulations! Where are you having your surgery? Had pre-ops today and met with my doctor. I am a revision and he did say that if the scar tissue is really bad, he would remove the band, but I would have to wait a year to be sleeved. Hoping and praying everything is good and I will come out of surgery bandless, portless, and sleeved! Sunnymama10, are you on a pre-op diet? I was told to continue normal eating until 24 hours prior to surgery. Then it is full liquids and then nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

    tattoos

I was thinking of getting one after I reach my goal and get a tummy tuck. My port incision is about 2 inches above and an inch to the left of where my port actually is so any revisions won't matter. And if for some reason they move the port somewhere else completely, the tattoo will still have sentimental value. I was thinking about getting "Fill Here. Saliene Only" like it says "unleaded only" under the gas cap. I think it would be a fun conversation starter when I'm skinny enough to wear a bikini! If anyone has a port tattoo, post up pics!! Janiece
  19. I'm 11 days and 14lbs post op and feeling great! I can't believe how fast and what a breeze the surgery was! I did not do a revision so a litte different situation in that respect but any of the questions or anxiety I may have felt before is behind me and I'm so excited for my future! You came to the decision for many reasons and with a clear head I'm sure, before the anxiety of the "moments" before set in. You can do this! Get your desk cleared and your stuff done so you can focus on YOU during the time you've taken off for recovery. Luck to you!! :)
  20. I'm a band to sleeve revision patient, and during the post-op diet, you do have to chew food very well especially when you first get to solids. Now that I am 7 months out, I can eat anything and do not have to chew things to a mush consistency. I eat steak (medium well), ribs, brisket, chicken breast (cooked anyway except I'm not a fan of fried chicken), venison. Really, the only meat that doesn't work for me is pork. We (my family) cut 95% of pork out of our diet months ago. I did try some pork chops once, and they just didn't work. We don't eat sausage or bacon. We did have a ham for Christmas and I was able to eat it. I still have the habit of eating really moist, or wet meat. I picked that up with my band. I used to have to drown all meats in some sort of condiment. I swear I should of bought stock in Heinz Ketchup and A1 steak sauce because I never ate meat without one of them for 7 months. Now, I don't have to use much, but I still like to have something on the meat I eat. It's a habit now, and I think I like the way it all tastes. I haven't had anything get "stuck" in months. Just to let you know, the "stuck" feeling with the band is completely different than the "stuck" feeling I got with the band. When something did get stuck, it hurt for a second then it would just kind of creep back up the esophagus and come out. I did get a bit of overproduction of saliva, but nothing like the band. The bite would come up, and then it was over. No gagging, no wretching at least that has been my experience. I still take small bites, and eat slow. But, it's what works best for me. The slower I eat the more satisfied I feel. Plus, I can get in a bit more food.

    Body rejecting my lapband

As far as I know, the most common reason for doing band removal and revision surgery in 2 separate surgeries is to allow the body to heal before subjecting it to more surgery. I don't want to rain on your parade, but it's impossible to predict what your upper GI tract is going to look like when your new surgeon goes in there to remove your band. If there's a lot of scar tissue or inflammation, it might not be safe to proceed with the sleeve at that time. I had my band removed in April 2012. I went in to the operating room expecting to wake up with a sleeve, and I woke up with nothing - no band, no sleeve. Here's a link to a recent thread about the band versus the sleeve, on which I posted my own story. If you have any questions after reading it, please let me know. If I don't know the answer, I may be able to point you in the right direction. Just one more thing - I applaud you for getting a 2nd opinion about this. Your health is too important to allow a doctor to pooh-pooh your concerns.

    Body rejecting my lapband

It's good you found a revision doctor who can do the removal/revision/plication take down at once. Recovery is a bit more difficult and longer than implanting your band, but once you are there, the aftercare is minimal. Just want to warn you that I know several whose tests showed the band placement was fine and once they got into surgery, they found the bands had eroded, adhered to other organs, etc. barium swallows, even endoscopy showing a healthy stomach can be a false negative for slips and partial erosion. They just can't tell for sure, until you're opened up. Best wishes for a quick surgery and speedy recovery.
  23. I haven't done my revision yet, but am 90% ready to book my appointment for November. Why am I switching? Because I hate my band. Right now I have acid in my throat and just finished yacking up a some pizza (I took 3 bites of a pizza). While last night, I was able to enjoy dinner (lots of it) at my parent's with out any problem. I also have a leak. My band is just so unpredictable and I'm afraid of the damage it is doing to me.

    Gastric sleeve and heartburn

Hearburn/reflux is a very well-documented side effect of sleeve surgery, whether you are having a revision from lap band or this is a first bariatric procedure. If you have a hiatal hernia, see if your surgeon can repair it during your sleeve surgery. This is a very common cause of GERD and having it repaired can make a huge difference. I had occasional GERD prior to my sleeve surgery, my surgeon fixed it during my sleeve surgery and no GERD since. Many sleevers take a PPI such as omeprazole or Protonix for several months after surgery -- talk to your surgeon about this. If you already have GERD and it is not caused by a hernia or some other repairable deformity, then gastric bypass may be something you want to consider. Sleeve surgeries can cause or worsen GERD but bypass cures it something like 98% of the time.

    Gastric sleeve and heartburn

Would like to revise from band to sleeve but am concerned about this reflux issue. Even before having the band I had issues with acid reflux. I have it well under control now by taking omeprazol daily, but am concerned that with the sleeve the omeprazol won't be effective. Has anyone been ableto control their reflux succesfully by taking a ppi after VSG? Thnaks!
