UHC Oxford
kaseyw0od replied to Stephanie Salsera Perrott's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been wondering the same thing! I called Oxford and they said as long as it is a motivated attempt of weight loss for 6-months and your doctor or nutritionist is noting your progress, you should be fine. I even asked if I gained weight would I get denied and they said no. I also asked my nutritionist and she said the same thing and has never experienced any authorization issues with Oxford. That makes me feel better, but I’m still terrified of getting denied! I had 4 nutritionist appts already…the first two I lost about 5 pounds altogether and the third one I gained a pound (after the holidays). I actually have my fifth appt tonight and I know I gained some weight back UGH! I’m just nervous that all this weight gain is going to get me denied and I’ll have to do this whole process again! -
Anyone ever do a Pre Pre Op diet???
btrieger replied to Megg40's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! I basically just cut my portions down by about 25% and began walking a lot. I've even thrown a tiny bit of running in. I don't consider this a diet. I have not gone to bed hungry since I started and don't plan on going back to what I was doing. I am building up my arsenal of tools: Bodybugg Treadmill Lapband Knowledge I attribute a lot of my weight loss to the Bodybugg. It tells me how many calories I am burning. So, I know how many calories I can eat and still lose. The treadmill takes away my excuses for not walking because of weather. The lapband is going to be used to keep me honest with portions. I came into this knowing quite a bit about weight loss but in my research of the lapband and reading the experiences of people here, I am learning quite a bit more. I try to do what the successful people have done and stay away from what the failures are doing. -
many surgeons recommend you wait a year after hitting your goal weight to be sure your weight is stable. A 10 to 20 lb gain after you hit your lowest weight is unfortunately VERY common - it usually occurs during year 3. And a gain of more than 10 or 15 lbs can affect your surgery results. some insurance companies don't cover plastic surgery at all (mine did not). Some will cover it if you have some medical issue with it that doesn't respond to traditional treatment - like a chronic rash. So if you have those kinds of issues, see a doctor because you'll need the documentation to submit to the insurance company. I had my surgery with Lawrence Zachary, who's on the faculty at the Univ of Chicago - but he does his self-pay surgeries at Weiss on the north side. He specializes in plastic surgery for massive weight loss patients and is nationally known, so he is pricey. Dave Shifrin (in the Loop) doesn't specialize in it, but he's done a TON of PS for massive weight loss patients and is also nationally known (and also pretty pricey). I had a consult with him as well. I also had a consult with Daniel Krochmal. Not well-known nationally although he had some pretty impressive fellowships (he's younger with not as many years under his belt) - I liked him as well but decided to go with Zachary due to his reputation and many years of experience. there are lots of surgeons in Chicago - so set up 3-5 consults as you may get different ideas from different surgeons. I definitely wanted someone who either specialized in it or has done a boatload of them. realself.com is a good resource for creating your list of people to consult with...

My sisters were very supportive of me and are proud of my weight loss, but as I continue, they now seem to want to feed me. Luckily I'm not near them every day. I think they are used to me being the fat sister and now I'm the same weight and still losing is making them uncomfortable. They kept trying to get me to eat and have a drink with them. I took the glass of wine and pretended to sip just to shut them up. Later, I poured it out and they didn't even notice. This is my journey and I am worth it. I keep telling myself, food is fuel. I am not going to sabotage myself.

Hey everyone! After thinking of weight loss surgery for over 2 years, I finally made the call last week for an appointment. They were able to get me in today! I am so excited but nervous as heck! I am needing a sleep study 😞 and an endoscope test. I do get to pass the 3 month dietary restriction due to my insurance requirements for BMI. It sounds like I need to lose 25 lbs before I can schedule surgery and possibly another 25 on the preop diet. (Which I am very nervous about failing). I broke down last week and told my husband, who encouraged me to make the call. I am so thankful he is on my side but I do not plan on telling any other family members. Please tell me I'm not the only one out there like this??

Posted 11-09-2009 at 04:29 AM by Hychap2009 Briefly, got a call about an hour ago from the admission person (Pauline), she has now confirmed my surgery date for 30th Nov. So I'll go in on 29th Nov. She asked me why surgery did not go ahead last month, so I explained briefly, she suggested that I have another pre-assesment, so now I wait for that. I personally think that's a good idea. I'm now considering wheather I should wash my hair this week or near the time. Whichever, its a risk. I have dread locks which are the same length as my height, 5ft 2" so it takes about 3 days to dry properly, therein lays the risk of making my head cold worse. Excited, well not really, I've just had it, the roller coaster ride is getting tiresome. The question in my mind is will I make to surgery.

Everyone loses tons of water weight in the first couple of weeks of dieting, then it slows down. 4 lbs a week after that is a very high rate of weight loss and it will likely slow down sooner or later. And get ready for your first stall, because that's likely coming within the next couple of weeks. Don't let it freak you out! If the scale is going to stress you out, you may want to put it away for a while and just focus on the things you can control, like meeting your protein and fluid goals.

paracelsus51 replied to sbroughton's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Nope. It will be considered weight loss treatment. Sometimes they get around it by taking out your gall bladder or appendix or fixing a hernia. Anything to do with your band is going to be on your dime. That is unless you have new insurance that covers it. -
Is there a Youtube Vlog community for VSG?
300PoundsDown posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've been watching vlogs on youtube for those who had the sleeve (or other surgeries). I wondered if there is some kind of official group etc. for this or is it just individuals. A few years ago I was part of a group called Gut2cut which was just a weight loss community on youtube. People would join the group and upload their videos to the group. That way people could find each other. Is there something similar or does everyone just upload and tag their videos with vsg and eventually people find each other? Thanks! -

Fish Oil, Vit E for dry skin and hair? Is it helpful?
parisshel replied to CrazyJaney's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
This is in no means a plug, but I love Nuxe body oil. You can use it for hair, nails, skin...it smells delicious and really is an all-in-one product. it's from France but I know it is now marketed in the USA. Here it's called Huile Prodigieuse. You can even buy it with little gold flakes in it which makes you look all sparkly. -
Did anyone gain in their Pre-op Nutrition visits?
bikrchk replied to smile121's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I gained about 12 pounds in the 6 month "Physician assisted" weight loss attempt. My surgeon doesn't submit paperwork till you've completed this step. I was close as far as qualifying BMI wise at 36 (35 with co-morbidities was the cut off), when I started the 6 months so losing before I qualified wasn't an option, AND my PCP had just started me on a statin, which can cause weight gain. No one cared. What my surgeon DID care about was AFTER I was submitted I did have to lose 10 pounds for liver shrink within the 4 weeks before surgery. I dropped 13. -
I wanna know how people in my situation are doing??? I have lost 8 pounds since the operation I feel good, I get full by “eating” so little, I am in the liquid stage, I have tried eggs, beans etc.. all good, but my biggest concerns are: will my hair fall off?? Do I need vitamins? (My doctor said he doesn’t recommend them??) and my scars, would you guys recommend any good cream, oil? To make them go away?? And, will I ever eat solid food :/?? Thanks!

January 20- Yesterday I had my appointment with Dr. Avila and was pleasantly surprised to find out that I had actually lost 54 pounds and now weigh 175. I did have my third fill at that time as I have been feeling a little hungry between meals. He told me I was doing great with an average loss of two pounds per week. I don't go back to see him again until I feel like I need another fill. Last time he told me to come back in three months so now I really feel like I am on my own. I will try to attend some of the support meetings they have the last Wednesdays of the month when the weather gets better, to keep up with how others are doing and to have others to visit with for support. This band has been great and will be a great help when it comes to the maintenance part of the weight loss picture that other programs cannot provide. I have not missed the foods that I have not been able to eat at this point, and maybe I will be able to add some of them back anyway in small quantities later.

From a Nurse standpoint as well as a patient standpoint, if you are diagnosed with sleep apnea you ALWAYS sleep with the mask until a study proves you don't need it. Sleep apnea is most linked to heart attacks which occur in the early morning hours. Mine was so bad my oxygen was dropping into the 50s at night and I thought I was sleeping fine. I just had memory loss, severe headaches in the morning, and a very tired feeling. I fell asleep every time I tried to sit down to do something. Now that I have lost 108 pounds they have been able to reduce the pressures but you may or may not be able to come off it no matter how much you lose. When you first get it, sit up and read with the mask on for a while before bed. This will help you get use to it. I feel so much better, I haven't slept one time without it since I got it and don't want to. It's not as bad as it seems! Good luck with it! [sharedmedia=trackers:tickers:6868]

Yester day, August 30th I went to the surgeons office. When I was weighed I had lost 24 pounds. The nurse was very excited about that. When the Doctor came in he started to look at my chart and said do you know how much you have lost? I told him yes, but that I did lose some of the weight prior to surgery as I had cut back on my carbs and had been walking 2 miles on my treadmill. I probably had lost 10 pounds from May until my August 17th surgery. While I was there he took off my steri strips that had been covering my incisions. He said I was healing very well. I am happy anyway for the 24# loss. I am scheduled to go back to him on Sept. 12. He told me I could eat anything you would feed a baby. So I had a cup of clam chowder last evening. Yogurt fro breakfast as usual.

Please help! I don't know if anyone out there is having similar troubles but I can't seem to eat many healthy foods without ending up with a sliming incident. And it can happen after a bite or two. Right now I am subsisting on mainly soup and yogourt. (I have even had incidents when eating some of the thicker soups.) I am feeling sorry for myself and so I am eating junk. I love cakes, cookies, chocolate and more chocolate. The funny thing is, even with the band I have little trouble eating those things. I have been banded over a year and have had a lot of trouble with it. I have had small fills (less than 1 cc) and after a few weeks I have had it removed as I could not progress beyond a soft diet. I had to be completely unfilled for about 4 months and put on 15 lbs., which thank God, I have lost most of. <img src="images/smilies/happy.gif" border="0" alt="" title="" smilieid="60" class="inlineimg" /> It seems that I am so irritated after a fill that it can take a month for the swelling to go down. Most of my friends do not know that I have had the surgery and they think that I am bulimic!!! Sigh...and the weight loss is so slow.... I don't regret having the band because I saw how quickly I put the weight back on when I wasn't filled but I sure wish I could figure out how to manage it. The smaller the fill the more foods I am able to eat and the hungrier I am. The tighter the fill then I can't seem to eat anything except the junk. Does anyone have any suggestions

Anyone been thru TLCEdge Weight Loss Center?
momwifelove posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I live in Texas and I am going thru TLCEdge Weight Loss Center. I was just wandering if anyone had been thru it and if so how was your experience. Everything has been moving so fast for me so I am just like WOW. I am self pay & I went to the seminar on June 30 & I am scheduled for my surgery on July 29. I am excited but just wandering if anyone else had been thru them. Thanks for any help. -
Struggling to exercise
MSinger replied to crawford8903's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just do what you can and don't pressure yourself to go past your limit. I'm 6 weeks out and walk 1.5miles a day. I was hoping I'd be back to my regular 3miles a day by now, but I've blacked out a couple of times. Yesterday I added an additional 500 steps to my walk and got dizzy on my way home :/ Your diet is the biggest driver of weight loss. Exercise helps, but it's not critical, so if you're struggling then take it slow. Anything is better than no activity at all. -
Does anyone have any weight loss books...specifically the big book on gastric sleeve that they no longer need and wish to sell?

People's comments and frustration they can cause!

No. I only have Polysyctic ovaries which is not a co-morbidity. A little weight loss would've helped me a lot with my infertility. Most doctors agree that a gastric sleeve would've been a better option Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm 11 weeks post op and only 2 kgs away from my goal weight at which I will be at a healthy BMI. I currently have no problem with eating and drinking. I get enough Protein from meat everyday so no Protein shakes for me (nasty stuff plus caused me to be nauseous and with tachycardia) I average around 1200-900 calories per day yet my weight loss hasn't slowed down or stopped.. How can I stop it now?! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Oh and since I'm posting this question in the Mini-Gastric bypass section it means I had a MGB Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
