    So Disappointed In Myself.

Emmajane read this short paragraph. It explains a little about the variance of weight loss: Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy so it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. I hope this helps.

    Stop the gain!

I've gained 23 lbs of an over 200 lb loss. Would like to lose 10 lbs as I felt best at that weight. I'm just going back to basics - not all the way back to liquids and purees, but the "protein first - then veggies - then if there's room, a small serving of fruit or healthy carbs (e.g., whole grain thing))". I've also stepped up my exercise - 4-5 days a week. I've always logged my food, so I'll continue to do that. The issue is I've let too many calories and not-the-greatest-food-choices back into my life, and I'd slacked off on exercise the last few months. I don't know how successful I'll be with this, but this is how a lot of other vets have tackled it. other methods I've heard that vets have had success with are Weight Watchers, Intermittent Fasting, and Keto - so any of those could be worth a try, too.

    Pre-Op Testing

My preop was today. I was supposed to be at St. Mary's in Richmond Virginia at 8:30 to start, but I was there at more like 7:30. I think it paid off because they rocketed me around the hospital and got me out for the labwork by 9:30. That wasn't bad in my opinion for outpatient registration, hospital registration, ultrasound, 10 vials of blood, arterial blood gas, x-ray, and EKG. It seems that's the usual for St. Mary's for anybody going there. I did paperwork, had a consultation with Dr. Bautista, and got my physical at 1. Again, it was pretty quick. I was out by 2. My next appointment is August 11 for this little thing called surgery. Dr. Bautista clarified one thing for me -- he hasn't been using Da Vinci for VSG (just for RnY). That may change with my surgery. If he can get the robot, it seems I'll be the first sleeve he will complete that way. I'm not worried because he is reputed to be an ace with the system to my understanding and this surgery in a lot of ways is simpler than the RnY.
  6. We were at the same starting weight too give or take 10lbs (I WAS HEAVIER!) Surgery was 1/21. I had a very rough recovery, had the notorious three week stall which lasted 3 WEEKS, and have been feeling like my progress is NOT where it should be. I hardly ate or drank anything after surgery for at least a month. I had Water nausea & everything. Puree phase was the worst...I just could NOT eat and the sight of Protein shakes made me heave. She, on the other hand, had a super easy recovery and lost almost 20lbs more than me at this stage (her surgery was in Aug & 8 weeks later she was down 50) I just started tracking food- right now I'm having about 800-900 calories most days & I just started back to doing vigorous exercise this last two weeks. Tuesday I did a 63 minute spin class and ate 1500 calories that day. I felt that was WAY too much. I don't even like going over 1000 calories but according to FitnessPal, those 63 minutes burned off 1100 calories... Anyway, I've done over 190 minutes of exercise this week and lost only 2 friggin pounds. She's 10-12 years older than I am too. I''ve been teary all morning since weighing in. I don't know if this was really worth it. I could have struggled like this WITHOUT spending $7000 of my money on this effing surgery.

    Feel sick!!!

    It might have been the tomato sauce or cheese. I couldn't handle either of those at 3 weeks postop. (Took me about 10 weeks to really get comfy with those). Try not to despair. You'll be able to eat real food again, just maybe not so soon. {Hugs}
  8. hello, nykee I take it that you have lost 65 pounds so far! that great.......Are you doing any thing at all besides your band? like exercising. That will help your band out and cause your body to loose weight, like some type of Aerobic,s. Iwas walking hour or two aday besides biking weights or jogging up to fifteen hours aweek of exercise and im down over a hundred pounds but I was killing my self and it became very over comimg like a job! and exercise should be some thing you like doing/and not a chore. so I cut mine in almost half I am up two pounds but just water weight went on a pizza benge....& junk food for a few days also chocolet...but some times I do that, then no treats for a month or so. I was at seven pounds to my goal now nine, so it will take me a week or more but thats fine......I will get there in time, and that what weight loss is Time.......I think you can do this with no problems you just have to make your mind up! and then make anew game plan, may be cut back alittle on some thing? and just go for small walks every day! will help. well take care I no you will meet your weight loss goals its all up to you! take care you have done a wonderful job so far keep it up!JOHNQ a little over 10 months......
  9. My name is Renia, (Renee)I am a 40 years old female who has decided to have weight loss surgery as an instrumental tool in my battle in weight management. I have a wonderful husband, Kendall (Ken), who supports me in everything that I do. We've been together for 25 years and married for 21 ½ years.I have three (3) beautiful children, Chandralyn, age 10, Adrian age 5, and Nichole age 3. I am a house wife. I decided that I am really not happy with my weight. :thumbdown:Regardless of all the things that I have tried, nothing seems to work. I am a yo-yo dieter, always able to lose but never able to maintain any weight loss. In fact, I always gained back more than I lost. I have so many fun things I want to do with my life. I need to lose about 140bls to get to my heathy weight. My surgery is on the 22nd of April 09. I am on my liquid diet now, thired day. It's going ok. I cheated the first two days. Day one with 4 ruffle chips, day two with the skin off a chicken thigh (skin of chicken is my down fall). Lets be buddies.
  10. So today I was told by my insurance coordinator that my insurance will not cover the sleeve (which is what I have been planning to get for the past 6 months). Surgery is scheduled 10 days from now. However, she said that my insurance WILL cover the band. I have heard a lot more horror stories about the band than the sleeve. Also, the idea of having a foreign object inside of me for the rest of my life, gives me the heebie jeebies. Even my doctors tend to push the sleeve and is actually where I heard most of the horror stories from. I told my coordinator that I will get the band instead. I could do a member appeal, but it's been such a long road already, I don't want to drag it out even longer. So basically, I need some encouragement. I've been crying my eyes out and I'm extremely scared of the band now. I hope I made the right decision. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you!
  11. I went to my primary care Dr today and she was all for the lap band surgery! I called the Dr that will be doing it and scheduled my Orientation! It is set for August 9th. I was told that I have to lose 10% of my weight before I can have the surgery. My question is, do I start doing that now, or do I wait until after orientation? Is it hard to lose the 10%? What did you all find as the easiest and quickest way to lose it? I am going to have to lose about 26.5 pounds as of right now. I can schedule my surgery after losing 5%. How long should it take me to lose that weight? I am so excited, I cant wait!!

    Swimming?

My surgeon said. 10 days. I think it depends on how well the incisions have healed.
  15. I haven't been this weight in over 5 years. However, I still cannot wear the jeans that I was wearing 10 lbs heavier than this. What gives? I wasn't more muscley then. I have lost almost 50 pounds and only one clothing size. AAARGH! I feel like there isn't much of a difference in the way I look. I know, how I feel is most important, but that hasn't been different either, as I never really felt bad Healthwise before the band. Is it skin? What? I am so sick of being a plus size! I'm still a 20!

    Long Weekend

You did better than I did. I'm 10 days POST-op (which isn't much different than pre-op diet). I decided I'm just not ready for outings like these where there is food and alcohol (and cigarettes). I know I will learn to handle these things, but right now I'm too new to this way of life. Good luck to you! The weekend will be over before you know it!!
  17. 8 days and counting! One week and 1 day, or 192 hours to go. I feel like singing - 8 bottles of beer on the wall, 8 bottles of beer, you take one down, you pass it around, 7 more bottles of beer on the wall...come on, you know the song. lol. Okay, I'm really goofy this morning, probably because I had my sleep study test last night, and I really don't think I ever went to sleep. My mind was going crazy most of the night. I got to the sleep study center at 9:30pm, they hooked me up and I was in bed around 11:00 pm. I turned the tv off and decided I was going to get a good night sleep. Well, I remember the tech coming in at some point during the night, and readjusted my nose piece, seems it came off. Then the next thing I remember is he came in around 5:30 am, and told me I had 3 pages of paper work to complete. As he was unhooking me he asked if I felt I didn't get to sleep last night, and I said "kinda", he then said he couldn't discuss my test, but don't be surprised if they have me come back. As I was leaving, he again said be prepared to come back before the surgery. Not sure what all that means, and hopefully the doctor will call me today to go over my test results. I have a headache this morning as usual, I usually wake up with one so its nothing new (that was something that they said is a sign of sleep apnea). When I went in for the pre-test yesterday, I spoke to the doctor and I asked her if I would know the results of my test when I woke up. She said no, and the techs were not allowed to discuss them. She did tell me if they came in and placed a ccap machine on me, that was a sure sign that I had apnea and needed the machine. So, they never did that, so I might not have apnea, not sure. I just know that I snore, like a freaking lion. This morning when I got home, my DH asked how it went and I told him what they said, he said 9 times out of 10, I'm sleeping like a log. I told him just because I'm snoring doesn't mean I'm in a deep sleep. Well - there you have it, my journal for the day.

How to you cook your fish?

I'm originally from the North and love haddock or cod, not fishy just nice white and flaky. Because it flakes when cooked, I like to just bake it in the oven in a glass pan lined with foil (easy clean up). I spray on a little butter, add a little lemon juice and cracked pepper and throw it the oven at 400 degs for 10 to 14 minutes. Now that I live in Florida, I like to grill mahi mahi or tuna steaks on the gas grill. They are a firmer fish and will stay together better on a grill (use Pam spray for grilling also). I still use lemon and cracked pepper to keep it simple, but there are alot of other seasonings and marinades to change it up also. Enjoy, fish is so good for you and great with just a small salad or some fruit.

Well, it's been 2 and 1/2 weeks since my sugery. I have lost 10 pounds and 11 inches off my body. I can't see a difference yet when I look in the mirror but my clothes are fitting looser. I am pretty happy with the results so far. I do enjoy working out and it definitly makes me a happier person. I have a long way to go but I know I can do this. Good luck to the rest of you, we can all do it!!:smile2:

    banded and no restrictions

I was banded on 10/18 and went through the quick weight loss (19 lbs in the four days post-surgery), then when I could eat again I had no restriction and regained a few lbs. I had my first fill on 11/27 and again lost weight while on liquids for 24hr, then realized I still had not hit the "sweet spot." I have 5cc in a 14cc band so I'm hoping the next fill (on 1/8) gives me the restriction that I need.
  21. I have two other very normal daughters, five normal grandchildren, 4 normal great grandchildren . . . One daughter and I are the only overweights out of the whole family-- plus our husbands are all very slim. Mine, in particular, eats carbs like you would not believe, (I make him buy them and stash them himself!) but has weighed 180-190 at 6'1" for twenty years. So it is not that we cook ourselves fat or everyone else would be too! Just she and have a weight problem and I started her off with Weight Watchers with me when she was 10. We both eat no JUNK, no desserts and no fried and basically low carb it and have for years-still we are both big. She has not had any luck with two insurance companies and has been trying for two years to get approved. I feel a little guilty that mine came through so easily! She was supposed to go first and I was supposed to cheer her on!

    Sex?

I think the sleeve effects us all differently. When I started losing, my hormones were all over the place and I had the sex drive of a 19 year old boy, the further out I have gotten the more that has leveled out. I agree that sometimes we focus so much on other things we forget about romance, and as women, most of us need romance to get in the mood. I would suggest a romantic evening out or some good one on one quality time.
