Hi! New To The Boards!
Kerinilla replied to Kerinilla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ms V and Amytug- I think that for the most part, UH is trying to see who can hang on long enough to keep at it for six months. Kinda weeding people out. Just making you jump through hoops, so people will give up. Not me! Amy, I can lose weight too- and like you, I can't keep it off! I have a nurse that works for UH that told me, " if you lose weight during the six month diet, it won't be counted against you. The first weigh-in that the Dr. Takes is the weight we base our decision on. But- I wouldn't gain any weight while on it. "So, I plan on losing about 25-30 lbs. my Dr. Said he jus needs 10-15 to shrink my liver, and he's happy. Some companies that use UH don't require the 6 month supervised diet. Some only 3 months. Some nothing at all. Depends on your employer. If you're unsure as to what your protocol is, call your insurance and grill them for specifics. hope I helped! Hope that answers your questions. -
I Cheated On Pre Op Diet And Feel Terrible!
AliveAgain replied to Singlemama's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor did not put me on a pre-op diet, but advised I should try to lose 10-15 pounds before surgery and go low-carb and kick the sugars so my liver could shrink a little. I ate the foods I'm eating now, high-protein, etc. practice food journaling, and then went on a liquid diet 48 hours before surgery. What you had sounds fine to me for 10-days out, just get back on the horse and try again tomorrow. Shrinking the liver is very important, it can prevent them from being able to do the surgery at all. The stomach is kind of hidden behind/beside the liver, and they have to be ever so careful not to damage it. -
Ayay, This is NOT a diet. This is a lifestyle change. I don't know how far post-op you are, but I'm guessing you're in the 3-5 weeks category. If so, search here for the 3 week stall. Almost everyone goes through that stall and finds that the scale is standing still for a bit. Take your measurements now, so you have something to refer to later, pay attention to how your clothes are fitting as well. Are they looser? If you did take pre-op measurements, are you losing inches? I lost my first pants size during my 3 week stall. I put them on, zipped them up, and they fell to the ground! I'm not following any diet except: 70grams of Protein and 64 oz of Water per day. I don't track calories, carbs, or anything else. I have started adding in more "good" carbs because I've upped my exercise routine, but that's about the only time I worry about carbs. Stalls will happen, but they happen because your body needs the time to adjust to the changes. I shape-shifted in the last few months, losing a good bit of mass in my hips and thighs and developing muscle definition in my arms, tummy and thighs. In that same three months, I lost 10 pounds. Now my weight loss has started up again, but I imagine that I'll go through another shift in a month or so. The best advice I can offer you is this: Don't let the scale run your life. Weigh less often and concentrate on your protein and water goals. The weight will take care of itself. Add in some exercise, even if it's 5 minutes on the treadmill or exercise bike. Once it's part of your routine, you'll miss exercise when you don't do it. Good luck!

My First Week On Self-Imposed Liquid Protein Diet. (Start: 667, Current: 557)
Patrick Curl posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is the week, I feel like my journey REALLY began. I began a self-imposed liquid diet(mostly liquid anyhow). I got my surgery date! (July 2nd Yay!) I lost 10 pounds. I have been really pushing myself to workout. I just got back from krogers where I parked at the back of the parking lot, and walked as long as I could inside before getting a shopping cart to lean on - and then I couldn't find what I was looking for so literally spent like 25-30 minutes walking today.. Now last week I couldn't walk around the block. I've also been doing Ultimate Fighting Challenge on Xbox Kinect almost nightly, and am trying to start up turbo-jam. After I get through w/ turbo-jam I'm going to begin doing P90X - that'll be um...interesting. Each night before bed I do stair pushups as well and squats in front of the stairs(so I can fall back and sit down when I need to lol). I started w/ 5 stair pushups and am now at 20 on the 6th stair up. When I get to 50 I'm moving down a stair. My diet has been really good and I just feel really on track and motivated...though could always use more SVs and NSVs lol to keep me motivated - I just hope I'm building a lot of muscle which will weigh more but in the end help me lose more too. I'm attaching my weekly food/exercise journal - I think I did pretty good...except for Friday and Saturday. Each day is a new day, and I'm finding this forum to be a HUGE wealth of information and motivation. I think the forum is almost as good as the surgery itself! - -well not the forum, but the people in it, and the community here. Thanks for welcoming me! I need HELP!! Gettin banded on the 29th
carvey posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Finally the day of my surgery is here 12-29-10 but I have been having mixed feelings about the surgery. I want to loose weight, I want to feel healthy but I feel scared and afraid that something bad is going to happen. I was originally schedule to have my surgery on Dec. 15th. I went to the hopital and was ready to go in but I started coughing and the anestisiologist canceled my surgery and sent me home to recover from the cold I had. Since then I feel like being in a roller coster with my emotions and descisions. I've been reading about all the complications and all the side-effects and it just made me think twice about the surgery. I need some advice on what to do. I can't postpone my surgery becasue after Dec. 31 my insurance will no longer work with my current hospital and doctors. HELP!!!! Is it really worth it to got throgh the pain and complications? Does the lap-band really work or should I try one more time on my own???? -
My Dr make you loss 10% of weight prior to surgery. I have almost 30 lbs to lose, I have lost 16lb so far and it has been hard. I have had to have the surgery post poned once all ready because I didn't make it, i have been trying and the Dr. now sees if I lose another 8lbs I can have it done. But I'm having problems with that as I can't take the medifast as I have a very senstive stomach and it has only been coming of at about 1lb a week. i have explain this to the Dr and she says you need to lose it or postpone and they are no help on how to lose. Any suggestions on how I can bost my weight loss quickly??? I have been on a lean and green diet for 8 weeks and it is getting really old an i need to lose this last 8 lbs in then next 2 wks as I have been rescheduled for Oct 21st. I'm begining to wonder if this all worth all this stress!!!!!!!!!!! :tt2:

I Just Cant Imagine Losing A Lot Of Weight
LouisianaLiLi replied to CB2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It may not, but you can't dwell on that. If the scale is going down, then you're going in the right direction. I am 7 weeks out tomorrow and I"ve lost 19 lbs since surgery. It's slow, but it's constant. Weight loss with the band should be at a slower pace (that's what I've been told). Now for some, it may be more, but I'm quite happy with my weight loss so far. If I hadn't had the surgery, I'm quite sure I'd be 20 lbs heaver than I was before surgery. Just take the steps as they come. If you start with a negative vibe, it is most surely to follow you down the path. Good luck in your journey! -
I researched it a little and was surprised to find out that the great majority of overweight people are deficient in vitamin D. The fat cells actually absorb the vitamin, preventing the body using it and processing it. My doctor actually gave me a prescription for a once a week pill to take - or said I could take an otc daily dose of vitamin D. I opted for the once a week - which was covered by my prescription plan. My surgery is in 8 days, and they did check my levels again last week, but honestly, I took the pill a few times and never really stuck to taking it every week as recommended. I was really close, though. They told me they like you at 130, and I was at 128. (Probably b/c I hate sunscreen!) So I didn't really feel the urgency of importance. If I was below 100, maybe I'd have been more concerned. But kind of felt like, really? let me sit outside for 10 minutes and take the test again. hahaha! Honestly, though, I'm not really sure of the benefits of it. So previous answer from NoEscape21 was enlightening! Thanks!!

Gallbladder Coming Out Tomorrow
Pheath replied to Wisdom2KnowTheDifference's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They found mine during my testing for lb too. My surgeon wouldn't even consider doing them at the same time although I wished at the time he would bc my ins won't pay for LB but they did for Gb. Of course better safe. I had my GB out on 6/29 and my LB is Fri 8/10. I got my energy back about 8 days post op but felt like it was a breeze. Hope I do so well with the LB! Pennie -

More Adventures In Medical Tests..
elcee replied to Wisdom2KnowTheDifference's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have done a 24hr collection previously and it is a PITA! At that stage I wasn't told that the sample had to be kept in the fridge but I have since read that they now believe this to be the optimum way of doing things. About 2 years ago I went to see a cardiologist ( I have unexplained hypertension) and he referred me for a pile of tests. When I went to the lab to have what I thought was blood drawn they told me it was a 24hr collection. I refused, went home researched on the net and discovered that it was possible to do the test from blood so phoned my specialist and requested it be done that way. He wasn't too happy but he gave me the appropriate referral. I wasn't just being a princess. I have a bladder problem and often get up up to 10 times at night to pee. There was no way I was going to do that and then stagger through my house all the way to the fridge. I had visions of me tripping and getting it everywhere, plus I don't think that is very hygenic. The labs have separate fridges for samples, at home we don't have that luxury. Maybe you can call your endocrinologist and see if you can have the same thing tested for via blood instead. They might tell you that the blood test isn't as accurate but it is worth a shot. -
Hi all!! I have done the exact same things you all have done. Heaped up my plate sat down at table and then laughed!!! I am pretty good at how much I can eat now and I usually put the right amount on my plate. I still find it funny that after we eat dinner, it is not 10 minutes and hubby is looking for food and continues this throughout the res of the evening. Sometimes is pisses me off, but most of the time I am in complete amazement of how much food a person can shove in their mouths. The best part is that I used to be just like that ONLY worse than hubby!!!! Deanna

New girl from Ireland-Hope to get banded
sweet-tooth posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all. Ive been a lurker of this site for quite a while now and finally joined tonight. Im currently researching getting the band, im very excited by it all. I dont have a appoitment yet to see consultant but soon will. Im going to advanced cosmetic surgery in Dublin. Has anyone here ever been banded there? I havent weighed myself in ages so dont know what i am but last time i did i was about 19 stone which is terrible. I am 21years old. Im about 5 foot five in height so as you can see im seriously over weight. I have tried various diets including unislim, ww, lipotrim, atkins. Nothing worked for me. I am really at the end of my tether, i feel so lonely, depressed (not even wanting to go outside now) I have a gorgeous 2year old daughter and a fab fiance. My weight really started to creep up when i became a stay at home mum. My partner is great, & very supportive. He only weighs 10stone so i feel very uncomfortable talking to him about my weight. I have always been big, national school, secondary school, college. And now still. I want to start living my life and once and for all get rid of this weight. Ive already had my gollstones and gallbladder out. Cant wait to get chatting on the site Sweet-tooth!!:cheer2: -
I Just Messed Up I Had Peanuts
Texarkolina replied to Pparrisss's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I copied a post I made in another thread about pre-op diets here. Hope this helps you. ........may I just say for someone struggling with the liquid diet that I am pretty sure we would all agree that....... liquid diet SUCKS! Not just sucks a little bit but really really really sucks. So if you are all whiny and angry and down and thinking about driving up to a window for a heart attack in a sack....don't think there is anything wrong with you. If there is anyone out there who can say that the liquid diet was a breeze then they most likely wouldn't need surgery. The good news....it starts getting easier about day 3. Somewhere along day 3 you go into ketosis if you are on a high protein/low carb diet. This acts as a natural appetite suppressant. If I had to do 14 days of day 1 or 2 I would never make it. I am on day 4 and it was doable today. Not fun, not pleasant, but doable. To be honest, however, I have been an over-sensitive, emotional wreck for the past 3 days. If you are reading this on the first few days of your pre-op diet you are probably overly sensitive, tired, shaky, have a headache, and are absolutely starving. The entire world is probably ticking you off and you could come through the computer and slap someone that says "if you can't do the pre-op how are you going to do the post-op?" I caved and had a boiled chicken breast and asparagus on the first night, then a boiled chicken tender on day 2 and 3. Today I did ok. If you do cheat, make it a smart one. Don't cheat with carbs or you will kill the ketosis benefit. Good luck.......... In other news--I am now 10 days post-sleeve and the liquid diet is so very very very easy now compared to before. My first surgery date was cancelled (anesthesia issues--nothing to do with pre-op diet) and I had to continue on the pre-op diet for another week. I was so discouraged and upset and struggled so much that last week. I mean--there was a baconator combo involved--upsized. This is hard--very very very hard and you don't have the help of a sleeve yet. Do the best you can--have a "smart cheat" lined up so you won't fall off the wagon into a cheeseburger--and realize that help is on the way. -
Went to my last appt today, lost the needed 10 pounds, cleared by diet and exercise! Now I wait for the call to schedule my surgey date!!!!

Hey everyone!so I start my pre-op liquid diet in 10 days and the closer and closer I get to the liquid diet the more scared I get about leaving behind a whole lifetime of food.i feel like I panicked the past week and tried to get in every last fast food restaurant I could think of because I have this fear that I'm going to miss it so much post op.ive been mentally preparing myself to let go of food since I started the journey of getting the sleeve, but the closer I get to the surgery date the more freaked out I get myself about not ever being able to have these foods again!i keep reminding myself to stay focused on the positives but and I am!but I was just wondering if anyone has felt the way I'm feeling lately!thanks for reading:)

So I'm officially one week out as of today. Have been able to hit Fluid and Protein goals since day 3, and only took pain meds for first two days. Went back to work on day 4. I feel very lucky and blessed as it seems there are many who've had a rough go of it in the first few weeks. I'm down 21 lbs since preop, with 5lbs lost since sx. Not too concerned yet as I know I was very bloated on fluids in the hospital. Doc gave me a good report and even told me to start purees early if I wanted (org told start purees at 2 weeks). Can't wait to see where I'm at in a month! HW: 374 1/15/16 SW: 263 11/10/16 CW: 258 11/17/16 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Excited But Scared! ????????
MyGastricSleeveLife replied to Shaniceh01's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck! Hopefully, they approve you quickly! I was self-pay, so I didn't have to worry about that. I'm 36 (almost 37) and have 2 daughters, ages 12 & 8. I want to have as much time with them as I can & that's one reason I did this. I'm now 10 days post-op and can't be happier with my decision! Good luck with your journey!! -

New Here And Feeling Some Kind Of Way...
Wheetsin replied to Red597's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm an absolute "type A" personality. In fact, I could probably redefine it. If you're an MBTI person I'm an INTJ, 100% in the "I" and "T" and about 99% on the "J". Etc. etc. So I don't like to do things I will fail at, and I compensate by making sure that I don't fail at much (and perhaps don't try the things I know I will fail at). I have accomplished everything in life that I have set out to accomplish, except for managing my weight. Education, job, family, financial security/debt free, etc. And here I sit with all that, and about 100 extra lbs. So while I'm not in the boat where my vocation eludes my personal life, I am in the boat where I cannot independently accomplish something I really should be able to accomplish. And it took a BIG HUGE dose of humble pill to finally admit that and meet it head-on. But there was a catch... My first solution was lap-band. I lost hella weight, and then gained a good chunk of it back after my band had to come out. Talk about all those feelings of failure coming rushing back in... and now they're tainted with the bittersweet reality of having very fresh memories of what it's like to be normal... So I get a sleeve, and I'm about 13 weeks out, and I've lost nothing for about 10 weeks now. Grr. It's like - can I please just find something that's going to work??? -
Excited... But A Little Unsure....
Dooter replied to fcslboy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you're like a lot of the rest of us, at 43 you'll end up at 350, or even 400. That's 10 years from now. Not to be negative or a downer, but that's been the reality for me. My losses were rewarded with triple gain. I wish I'd had this done 10 years ago. The "not being able to eat" (for me it was 5 weeks) is so very temporary, and TOTALLY worth it!! It goes by like a blip on a radar screen and you'll barely remember what it was like as you start trying on smaller and smaller clothing! Just sayin'...... you could do it....easy. -
Hi everyone! I'm from NJ and have AmeriHeath PPO … my doc said that according to my BMI of 36 and the fact that I have been on Glucophage w/ a diagnosis of PCOS for nearly 10 years, that I am a good candidate for Lap Band. I have met w/ the nutritionalist and have 2 1/2 months to go before I meet the 3 month requirement by AmeriHealth. In that time, I am also scheduled to see the Dietitian two more times, have an upper GI, see a therapist, attend a support group meeting, and meet w/ a cardiologist … all for clearance and validation of attendance. Whew!! LOL! Soooo my question is this … after I go through all of this, can insurance deny me?? I know my BMI and medical condition just inches me over the 'what qualifies you' mark … my fear is that in the end I won't get approved by the insurance, even though the doc gave me the thumbs up. I'd love your feedback on this!!! Thanks!!!!

I just was banded 6/19 but know exactly where you are coming from, food has always been my friend when I'm sad or upset or bored. I found that when I want to reach for a snack I do something else like go for a short walk or clean something or do a hobby (I like to read and paint) just get your mind off of food, get motivated. I know it's easy to say but I am trying to do the same thing. So I'm right here with you sister. Keeping a food journal helps when you see what you are eating in writing you have a better grip on where you are going wrong and can see where to correct it. I get upset when I see too much food on my journal because I know I'm just hurting myself. And, above all do not drink when you eat. You can over eat that way and that is not what you got banded to do. Keep sugar free and healthy food around you so you won't be able to make excuses and eat poorly. Stay positive, take a look in the mirror and tell yourself "I'm important and I am going to lose this weight and not let anything stop me, I love myself as a person and want to get healthy." Weigh yourself once a week and keep a record of it so you can see how you are doing. Be proud of yourself you already made a big step by getting banded now do what it takes to finish the deal. My prayers are with you.....
