  1. Leaks are a possibility, but I wonder whether something else is at work. When you say you have no resistance, does that mean you don't have restriction? And that's been for the last month only? Has the weight gain you've experienced as a result been in the last month? What else has changed during that time? Was the loss of restriction gradual or abrupt? Sorry to pepper you with so many questions! In all likelihood, it's probably something more easily remedied than a like. You may simply need another fill---that need can arise even after a long period of good restriction. In your shoes, I'd schedule an appointment with my surgeon.

    weight loss pre op

My doc did not have a set number, but the psychologist wouldn't clear me for surgery until I broke my tv snacking habit. I lost a month there. Everyone's loss is different, and there are a lot of different pre-op diets. You'll lose if you adhere to yours, but you'll probably slightly gain right after surgery from swelling and healing of tissues. It can take 3-4 weeks for your body to drop the surgical weight gain, but it will come off if you stay on plan. I've had a good weight loss, but I've been very compliant. The scale bounced up and down, but now I'm steadily losing. Good luck!

    Carbonation?

Before surgery I was told that I would have to get off carbonated beverages and caffeine prior to the operation. I was on a 6 diet coke a day habit. So I went cold turkey. I suffered through withdrawal for about a week. But because of that change alone I lost 20 pounds before the operation. It is my belief that the carbonation produce miniature explosions in the stomach that slowly over time cause the stomach to expand. As the stomach expands it allows one to eat more and thus results in weight gain.
  4. My BMI is lower than 40 but higher than 30. After yo-yo dieting all my life and menopause wreaking more havoc, I have decided to make a permanent change. I tried the gastric balloon and while initially successful, the weight returned. Change of life has meant even more weight gain. My sleeve is scheduled for 2/23. Looking for some similar life experiences for encouragement or lessons learned. Thanks in advance!
  5. @ - I kinds hit one monthly. I am 52 and entering the big "M" and have started skipping but I still have symptoms and some mild weight gain every month - to me as a long time dieter - it is the norm:)
  6. In my case, I spent a lot of time working on the head hunger part so maybe that's why when the physical hunger disappeared so did my head hunger. When my physical hunger re-appeared so did my head hunger, but not nearly to the same extent as pre-band. I had my own methodology of dealing with my head hunger and I'm still using those same methods now for losing without the help of the band. I think you make a good point there Missy, and I think that if you go into this mentally unprepared to do battle against your headspace you will struggle the entire way. I found that in the first half of the year of my leaky band, that I was not in that headspace and my weight gain tells the story on that.
  7. 9 months postop and on 8/10 had a positive pregnancy test. At first I was freaked out, then as the days went on we became more and more excited. I was worried about weight gain bc i wasn't at goal yet. But I decided to just follow the plan and worry about the weight after baby comes. Fast forward to this past Thursday, I started spotting. I called the on call OB and since I already had my 1st appointment scheduled for the next day, 9/20, he said there was no reason to come in early or go to the er unless I was in pain or bleeding a lot. Upon doing the transvaginal ultrasound we learned that our jellybean stopped growing at 6w5d, Friday I was 9w5d. My world just feel down on top of me. I scheduled a d&c for the next day. The 1st 2 days after I think in was in shock. Yesterday and today I'm so emotional and all I wanna do is eat. I haven't eaten for emotional reasons in almost a year. Has anyone been here? Any words or advice? Today has been especially bad bc I'm home alone. I took yesterday and today off of work. Yesterday I took my 3 yr to the zoo and we had a blast. Today she went to daycare. We had a m/c before our daughter and now one after her. I'm beside myself.
  8. After you get approved by your insurance to have the WLS, is there anyway you can be denied if you gain weight before you have the surgery?
  9. 4 mths pregnant . Already lamenting my weight loss . Can any fellow mommy’s who are sleeved shed some light on the experience . Any tips or tricks ? And what’s the general amount of weight gain Ty in advance 😊
  10. Sorry before had but I do need to vent. I have been noticing a 1 lb weight gain almost daily.. I eat right I walk. I drink a lot of Water. I take my Vitamins. I did move to the purred stage. I'm 3 weeks out. My protien isn't that high but its ok. The only thing I can think of is I'm super late on my monthly friend. But that doesn't really get to me cause I've never been regular. Sssso why? What am I doind wrong? The only good thing of all this is that my clothing fits bigger way bigger. So why does the scale go up. Needed to vent..
  11. Thanks. I've already started going back to the lower carb way of eating. For the most part I do eat low carb, but I started adding things back into my diet (good carbs) back in January. So, I started eliminating stuff again this morning thinking that the extra carbs may be what's doing it. I just can't get past that feeling of being hungry. I'm not used to it at all!! So, I'm focusing on Protein, veggies and good fats. Thats the diet I've followed since I had my surgery. I have PCOS so my body doesn't respond well when counting calories. Low carb is the way to go for me. I just wanted to know if anyone else had experienced a significant weight gain after an unfill? It's only really showing up around my waist. I mean, I have skin from my weight loss, but I suddenly have a muffin top & it's making my clothing SO uncomfortable. Anyone else out there have this happen?
  12. Hi Baripals! So I originally had VSG surgery in October 2012. At 253 lbs. the morning of weight in, I was pre-diabetic and had PCOS among other things. Fast forward almost 6 years, my doctor & I have made the decision to have a revision. I had initially lost about 95 lbs. and kept it off for 4 years until I had my son July of 2016. Even after I had him, I had only gained about 20 lbs. during pregnancy. I totally went off the "deep end" and started to go back to old habits like eating and drinking at the same time, not making healthy food choices, not chewing enough, eating/drinking ravenously, drinking carbonated beverages. etc. I was also switched on anti-depressants during my pregnancy and then switched again and then AGAIN! The previous anti-depressants had weight gain as a side effect on top of my poor eating habits. Doc. requested blood work and an upper GI test and confirmed I had dilated my pouch. I honestly feel like a failure but I know what I have to do. My husband will be going in to have VSG sometime this year too so I know I have to be strong for both of us. I don't want him to end up like I did. Has anyone else had sleeve revision. Any tips for this struggling mom?
  13. i'm in a similiar boat, where i only have half my restriction right now. i'm a 10cc band i've got roughly 3cc. i have some restriction (though not much), but i'm able to eat whatever i want without getting stuck typically. it's an odd feeling because prior to getting pregnant bread was out, steak was out, etc, not that being unable to eat bread was a bad thing. i don't know of doctor's who actually put fills in during pregnancy though. i know someone else was talking about it above, but my doc personally wouldn't. he wanted to take it all out but i fought him on it. i may end up with more being taken out before the end but i'll cross the bridge when i get to it. the weight gain is hard to watch, at least it's been hard for me to watch. i was within 100 pounds of my goal weight (i hadn't been this small in over a decade...it was quite the feat) and to watch it start creeping back the other direction at the pace it was was very very difficult. it did eventually level off though. instead of watching the weight jumps between doctor visits, i'm back to 1 or 2 pounds (thank goodness). be mindful of what you're eating. a food journal really helped during that time when i was visiting my nutritionist. we were able to look at what i was eating and determine there really wasn't much to change and that my portions were fine. my body was adjusting to pregnancy, though if i don't watch what i eat like a hawk, i can eat too much food in one sitting =/ hang in there.
  14. I've gained three pounds in the last week or so! I'm six weeks post op. my starting weight was 200 and now I'm 178. I eat about 500-800 calories a day, the majority of which is protein. I fall short on my fluids - I get around 45 ounces a day. I've also started exercising almost daily over the last couple of weeks. What else can I do? I'm so very frustrated to have had this huge life-altering surgery and to see the scale moving in the wrong direction... I'm trying not to focus solely on the numbers but seeing them move up is really scaring me. Open to all feedback!!

Constant Vomiting. No Weight Loss :-(

Vomiting will lead to slips and eating junk will lead to weight gain. If your doctor removing fluid isn't helping, then you need to have a barium swallow done to check for a slip or other complication.
  16. Hello, I had a lap band in January of 2006. I lost weight very slow but steady and all was good for about 2 and a half years. I got food poisoning and had to have all of my fluid removed. After that I was never able to get my restriction right. Ok maybe that sounds crazy but thats what happened. Also in the last two years I have been v'miting and acid reflux, no eating in the morning, can't ever get full blah blah blah. Oh did I mention weight gain. Recently I went and had another fill and explained that I had been feeling worse than usual but some days I can eat way to much and others nothing. My doc sent me to have an abdominal scan and an upper gi. Well I have gallstones and my band was so tight that the barium would not go down. My doc then told me I had to have some fluid removed, and then told me that I should consider the sleeve because he thinks that I won't be able to tolerate any more fills. So I had the fluid removed and now of course I have zero restriction. This is scary I can eat whatever and big portions. I'm sorry for being so winded I just wanted to give some background. I am going on 7-8-10 to get a surgery date hopefully at the end of July for the sleeve. Ok finally my question is has anyone had the band to sleeve revision and the gallbladder out at the same time and what type of recovery should I be expecting. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks so much.
  17. AND I DIDN'T GAIN A POUND!!! WOOHOOOOOOOOO! Never before in my life have I ever gone on a cruise or vacation and didn't come back with weight gain. I did get stuck once and PB'd, but I certainly watched it the remainder of the time. I'm perfectly restricted. Thanks Dr. C and staff!
  18. I have been banded for 6 days and I have lost 12 pounds so far. I pretty much living on 1 protein shake, some broth, and popsicles. I was wondering if once I start eating solid food, will I gain some weight back. I intend on following a low cal. diet, and exercise. Has anyone experienced weight gain after they were back on solids?

Pattern of weight loss - What is yours

Yes this is my point. So many posts show individuals that are defeated because of weight gain after strenuous exercise, low food intake and yet they show gains. People trying to loose weight have to know their bodies and how the weight is lost. When they know what occurs then they won't get discouraged.
  20. Hi all, I'm approaching five weeks out and I wanted to know if anyone else has experienced yoyo numbers on the scale so early out. I've been the same weight given 2-4 lbs for about two weeks. I'm taking in about 48g of Protein on good days and generally eat between 700 to 1000 cals a day. I'm planning to call my NUT tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Thanks!

PLEASE HELP!! I am a huge CHEATER!!

Hi Michelle, I seem to be in the same boat. I have not lost any weight for at least a month. I cheat all the time and seem to get away without gaining any weight. I really want to get down to my goal, so have recommitted myself. Frankly I have not found this that easy, as it really does require dieting. I still feel I am in the cycle of dieting or binging allthough the binges are small and don't cause weight gain. Anyway, I am recommitting myself to not cheating and excercising. Rose
  22. @@GranadoM74 OMG you're almost at the finish line. Please share once you get your date! Everyone's stories and result keep me so motivated. I know the 6 months will fly by! The weight gain or loss is a good question that I will ask my dr, thank you for brining that up. Do you know if you'll have to pay any money for the surgery? I'm not sure if I should my plan to low deductible VS the high ded that I'm on now w UHC. I may need to look into that more or search the threads. Seems like the evaluations are easy peasy I feel much better now after everyone's encouragement. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. Wishing you the best and looking forward to seeing your progress! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Anxiety and Irritability

I suspect there is also the demon that part of the reason we ate was to calm our anxiety down. We did it subconsciously and food soothed us, made us in a sense, happy, at least for the momoent. Now we do not have that soother in the form of food. This is also part of the picture I feel. That is why I have gone into therapy to learn to wrestle this dragon so I do not go back to being the fat person I had become. As to the hands shaking, and feeling hyoglycemic, are you getting your Protein? Keeping sugars out of your diet? I find when I even have a small amount of sugar as in non fat frozen yogurt, I have periods of hypoglycemia until I get more protein into my system. I think this is a really under analyzed portion of weight loss, the increased irritablity and anxiety can lead to weight gain and I feel should be acknowledged and studied. I for one am going to fight it daily, I am down 114 pounds in 10 months and never want to be fat again.
  24. You do know that being tight generally causes weight gain rather than loss? Because you can’t eat the satisfying foods you subconsciously eat sliders . You need to go and see a Dr. You may need tests. However you may also need to accept that your band has come to the end of its lifespan and will never again do for you what it was intended to do. It might be time to start researching other options.
