    No beans or soups

I'm a vegetarian and would be absolutely LOST without beans! I eat them for almost every meal at this point, and I've been losing just fine without restriction, including 4 pounds in the past 5 days (my first 5 days on mushies). Beans are so good for you, and I talked at length with my dietitian about them. She is absolutely fine with beans as a source of Protein for me. Yes, they have more carbs in them than meat, but as long as I keep track of where I am with my carbs each day, it is fine. Soon, I'll be off mushies and can add in soy, tofu, and "veggie" meats in addition to beans and cheese, but beans are working just fine for me at this point. I think by so severely limiting your options, your doctor could cause you to "cheat" more than if you were allowed a bit of variety. If I could only eat chicken day in and day out, you can bet I'd be considering some ice cream and chips out of boredom!
  2. you should always follow what YOUR doctor says. with that being said..EVERY doctor has a different plan! i'm a vegetarian and tried to do low carb at first, but i couldn't stick to it. now i just make good whole food-type decisions. yogurt (even the kind with sugar!), cheese, whole wheat Pasta, eggs, cottage cheese, lentil Soup, bran Cereal, milk, veggies, fruit, sf popsicles....those are the things i don't think i could live without. i was always a healthy eater, i just ate too much. my sleeve allows me to stop before i go crazy. i'm eating whole grain crackers with brie cheese right now!!! anyways. i think if i went with a low carb diet i might lose more...faster....but if i could live on a low carb diet i would have never needed the sleeve! i have lost 67 lbs in 4 months, and i have 45 to go. the last month has slowed down a lot. but i'm confident i will reach goal!
  3. I had my two-week post-surgery appointment yesterday and was approved to move on to soft foods. Being a vegetarian, protein is really important for me. They had a great idea--put a scoop or two of unflavored protein (I like Unjury a lot) in a shaker jar (like the kind they use for powdered sugar or parm cheese at a pizza place) and just sprinkle the protein on everything you eat throughout the day. Make a point to finish the shaker by the end of the day, and you've added 20 or 40 g of protein without doing anything else. When you shake it on like that, you really can't taste it or notice it at all...that, or I'm just so happy to have soft food again that I don't care!
  4. I am finding myself getting closer to becoming a vegetarian. I rarely eat meat at this point. All of this is post banding. Before being banded I was a total carnivore but my meat of choice was red meat which I can no longer do. I never ever thought I would ever be writing this post. I never could eat fish and have not been a huge fan of pork or chicken. Chicken at this point is too mediocre for me. Often it is too dry and I have horror stories about being stuck. Even at this time I have no Fluid in my band because of a revision but meat just doesn't do it for me anymore. Is anyone else in the same boat? I do think that I get enough Protein but do admit it is more of a challenge because it tends to get a bit boring. Anyone else? I'd love to hear more.

High Protein Vegan/Vegetarian Options for Us

Yeah, I don't see us ever converting over to vegetarian, but I like the options! Since I grew up in the midwest, I'm a HUGE pork fan. And I like the occasional no-meat meal, but I don't think I could go without chicken, pork, and venison forever. Not too big on steak, though.:001_tongue: I saw this Kung Pao Tofu | Eating Well earlier today and it looks so good! Needless to say, growing up on a sheep farm, my family didn't have much use for tofu, tempeh, or seitan. Lol! Thanks for the variety, or I'm sure I never would have tried these! Getting myself & the fiance out of our food comfort-zone onto new things. :thumbup1:

    High protein preop diet

Hi Lillie! I didn't read all the responses so sorry if this is a repeat. Have you ever tried meatless/soy items? I love the brand "Morningstar Farms", you'll find them in the freezer section and they come in green boxes. They have Breakfast sausage patties for example that are made mostly of soy and veggies. They are super low in carbs and have something like 15-20g of protein for 2 patties. I know they may not be a "snack" food but just thought I'd throw this out there. The company makes soy/veggie based meatless products for vegetarians - I am NOT one and never would want to be personally, but I find the items tasty. I've had their burgers, chicken nuggets, etc. They also make "crumbles" which is like an equivelant of ground beef, which you could use in cooking other foods. They don't taste exactly like the food they are meant to replace, but they have a lot of flavor and I like them. Soy nuts and other nuts make great high protein Snacks too!

    Grocery bills

I found mine at a Whole food type store. The stir fry recipes were my absolute favorite. I bought the dry variety and mixed it according to the package directions. SEITAN--THE VEGETARIAN WHEAT meat -- The Vegetarian Resource Group That has some of the brands that are available in some stores. And, how to even make homemade seitan. It's really a great option Anna, and I bet you'd like it. I would use it more if I could convert John and Caysen over, but that is a complete lost cause.

Unfortunately many veggie Proteins tend to be high in carbs, too. Here is some info on vegetarian Protein sources I got from the Savvy Vegetarian online: Nuts -- Almonds, brazil nuts, cashews hazelnuts, pine nuts, walnuts Seeds -- Sesame, pumpkin, sunflower, flaxseeds Pulses -- Peas, Beans, lentils, peanuts Grains and Cereals ? Amaranth, barley, corn, rye, oats, millet, quinoa, rice, spelt, wheat (in bread, flour, Pasta and seitan or wheat gluten) Soy Products -- Tofu, tempeh, textured vegetable protein, soymilk Dairy Products -- Milk, cheese, yogurt, kefir from cows, sheep, goats, buffalos, etc. Organic Free Range eggs - the chickens run free and forage, and are also given organic feed Foods like TVP, tofu, seitan are concentrated sources of protein. TVP is almost all soy protein, and seitan is basically almost all wheat protein (gluten). There are many cookbooks available with hundreds of recipes for cooking and eating all of these foods Legumes supply large quantities of protein (12 - 15 grams/cup). There are hundreds of varieties of beans and lentils in the world, and thousands of ways to prepare them, in combination with grains, nuts, seeds, and dairy Nuts and seeds also supply significant quantities of protein (like almonds or pumpkin seeds), and are an excellent source of good and healthy mono-unsaturated fats. Walnuts and flaxseeds and oil are good sources of vital Omega 3's, so often missing even in vegetarian diets Grains like quinoa, amaranth, oats, wheat, and spelt are also very good sources of protein, which is enhanced and completed through combining with other foods Soaking and sprouting legumes, nuts, and seeds will increase protein and Vitamins - sprouting gives the best results when it has just barely begun Dairy products -- Milk, cheese, yogurt, kefir from cows, sheep, goats, buffalos, yaks, etc, depending on where you live Vegetables like broccoli and potatoes supply significant amounts of protein. Even a banana supplies a gram of protein

Thanks for all the input, guys! I already buy pretty much all organic food (although I'm a vegetarian so I don't have to worry much about the meat cost!) My big problem in life is eating good food but WAY too much of it. That's why I think the sleeve might just be the answer to my prayers :thumbup1:
  10. ok so i was banded on the 15th.. and im just about to start my mushy foods week. now i know we need to eat 5-6 small meals a day and of course it has to be healthy. could you guys give me some examples of what you eat on a day to day basis? how do you eat smaller portions while still being able to get your daily servings of fruit, veggies, protien..etc? P.S. im a vegetarian, so if you have any tips for me, it would be greatly appreciated thanks!
  11. I really don't eat rice. I do eat quinoa. I like the taste, and I like that it's a complete protein. I also eat corn tostadas and soft corn tortillas (low in calories, and great with my homemade vegetarian crock pot pinto beans!).You shouldn't have any problem meeting your protein requirements if your daily caloric intake is at least 800 calories. Mine ranges between 800 and 1000, but I always make sure to eat my Proteins first.
  12. Well, in all honestly, I wouldnt call myself a "whole foodist" and I'm certainly not vegan or even vegetarian but my personal view on nutrition tends very strongly in that direction. I guess really I'm a "clean eater" more than anything. I try to avoid processed foods and I make things from scratch and definitely dont eat stuff like artificial sweetener or Lean Cuisines. Most certainly I dont consider things like shakes and bars clean eating and I avoid that sort of stuff as well as things like artificially sweetened flavoured Water (WHY? it tastes fine plain) etc. I buy a lot of organic food, and all our produce and meat is organic. But I do like a glass of wine, and today I had a real craving for a pie and a Big M (a pie is an Australian delicacy of pastry and meat, topped with tomato sauce (ketchup) and a Big M is a chocolate milk) so I would never claim to be virtuous - like anything its moderation nmore than anything. I just try to eat well most of the time and to make sure my body gets a good variety of nutritious non processed foods every day and occasionally something a bit more naughty sneaks in. In answer to your question, I think you can certainly lose weight on any sort of diet at all - its all down to calories in the end, but you do it the whole foods way it'll taste better and be much better for you than if your daily intake is a couple of Protein shakes and a lean cuisine!

    Healing with whole foods...

I also try to eat mostly whole, unprocessed foods, including organics. I do eat meat, but am trying to move to locally raised, pastured animals-- but I'm moving slowly on that one because it is SO expensive to buy. I've added my name to a CSA list for a farm nearby that raises all its animals in a pastured way (like in Michael Pollan's book- The Omnivore's Dilemma-- GREAT book.) I was vegetarian for years, and even vegan for a short time, but without the whole foods focus. I would say I was a macaroni-and-cheese-atarian- and fat as ever. Have you read Tosca Reno's "Eat Clean Diet Book?" Don't buy it- but check it out from the library-- she has lost a lot of weight by eating only a whole food diet, with a ton of strength training. The approach is basically to not eat anything processed- whole foods, foods with only one or two easily recognizable ingredients. They do use supplementation, though, and there is no eastern philosophy behind it at all. Decent recipes in the books, though.
  14. I'm a big fan of eastern philosophies when it comes to food (consuming a predominantly regional, plant-based diet with an increased sense of awareness) particularly as described in Paul Pitchford's "Healing with Whole Foods" and T. Colin Campbell's "The China Study". I'm not convinced that a vegan, raw food, or macrobiotic lifestyle is entirely necessary, but I admire the teachings and the discipline. So my question is: has anyone ever attempted to lose their weight specifically combined with a whole food, perhaps eastern-based lifestyle? I mean, I know a minimally processed, nutrient dense diet is the *ideal* we strive for, but has anyone (either on these forums, an author, or on another website) ever lost all of their weight with this specific focus and documented some of the benefits? I'm looking for a good resource to help me out. I'm not a vegetarian, but I've never been a big fan of meat so I worry about getting enough Protein and I don't want to rely solely on Protein drinks. My hope is that by loading myself up with all these amazing powerhouse foods and antioxidants I will give my body every fighting change of bouncing back to optimal condition. I don't want to just lose weight, I want to be strong and vibrant and healthy from the inside out. Like we all do! Along these same lines, are there any supplements (Vitamin E, for example) that people take that are particularly good for maintaining skin composure/elasticity as we shrink? What about topical treatments, such as cocoa butter? I've spent a lot of time reading books on pre/post LAP-BAND® lifestyle and the do's and don'ts both in books and on this website. Now I wanna go a step or two deeper...

    Vegetarians?

I'm seriously considering the VSG, but I notice pretty much everyone talks meat, meat, meat as post-recovery foods. Are there any vegetarians on this board? What do you guys eat?
  16. I am very much looking forward to Wednesday when I can eat some scrambled eggs & mashed potatoes, even though my Dr. said he doesn't like the potatoes b/c they turn into fat. I'm already looking at other "mushies" that I can have!! I could never be a vegetarian; I miss MEAT!

My surgery went very well. I had a breast reduction in 3/02 and that was my only other surgery, and a lot more extensive, so this one was a breeze! I took 3 days off of work and then was back! I felt "normal" after about 10 days with regard to the gas & bloating, and right about now my appetite is returning which is BAD!

I went for my post-op on Thursday, and Dr. S. said to come back May 13 to see if after a week of REGULAR eating (normal foods w/ strict measuring) I'll need a fill or NOT. It kind of made me mad b/c I WANT a fill, so if he decides I don't need one...well, it ain't gunna be pretty!

How are you doing with the liquidy diet? Have you lost weight? Are you happy with your progress so far?

  17. Hey there! Yea for March 31sters! Yes, I am on a stair-step diet. Right now I can have stuff like yogurt, milk, creamy soups, protein shakes, etc. On Wednesday, I get to have scrambled eggs and oatmeal, mashed potatoes! WOW I can't wait for that, lol. You know, I could never be a vegetarian, I miss meat :)

So, how did your surgery go? Mine, being the first surgery I have ever had was smooth as silk! Pain was minimal, tolerable. I went back to work yesterday, maybe a little too much excitement, but doing o.k. You?

    Sweet Tooth!

I have (or had, as the case may be) a terrible sweet tooth as well. I am thrilled to find that it has decreased TREMENDOUSLY and I'm not even banded yet. In anticipation of my surgery, I stopped drinking diet soda in February and the difference in my sweet cravings was almost immediate. I am also a big carb eater. I am not a vegetarian, but I don't eat beef or pork and tend to rely on carbs for quick, easy meals, especially Breakfast. When I stopped eating a muffin or a bagel for breakfast, I found that my sweet cravings were MUCH less throughout the rest of the day. I found I like the Muscle Milk Lite chocolate Protein drink and I save it for a time in the day that I really want something sweet. It is close enough to chocolate milk that it hits the spot. The Balance bars accomplish the same task for me. Believe me, I know your pain, but I think you might find that some diet changes now will really help tame that sweet tooth and will set you up for better success after you are banded. As is noted here time and time and time again, the band can only help how much and how fast you eat- what you CHOOSE to eat is still up to you. Good luck!! kagead
  19. The ADA and the AHA are absolutely NOT recommending that you get your carbs from french fries, Desserts or bread. What they ARE recommending is that we humans (omnivores and some could argue closer-to-vegetarians than not) is get our diet from a mostly plant based source. And by this they mean mostly vegetables and fruits and whole grain sources. This means brown rice and Beans, not french fries and cake. People who eat plant only food are the thinnest people (vegan). The ones who get their carbs from white bread/french fries and sugar are the heaviest-- and I daresay -- probably also eat the most meat. Unfortunately, our medical associations have NOT been good about pointing people in the right direction about carbs. They've led many to believe that all carbs are equal when they are not. Some do best on a very low carb diet. As a person who works in the fitness field-- I would argue that active people would do better with a higher percentage of carbs in their diet (and I don't mean just athletes- but active people in general). Not tons and tons-- just a balance. On another note-- weight loss can stall from too few overall calories as well as low amounts of specific nutrients. Something else to think about. Sorry for the book...

  21. Hey everyone! I was banded December 11th, I have gone from 230 to a VERY fluctuating 183-194. Depends on the day, the time, who knows anymore! It depresses the heck outta me, I can tell you that! I couldn't wait to hit 199, then 189........I get very depressed because since I lost weight so fast, I want it to continue. I've had 3 fills, this 3rd one kicked my butt! I can finally feel the restriction, but I also cannot eat very many things, and I usually throw up when eating. Needless to say, I don't think they'll be adding to my band April 29th. I'm tired of the few things I can eat, I'm upset because I'm not losing.......It feels like a dead end road right now and I know it shouldn't. I have plenty of time, but still. I'm doing the Body for Life workout program. Kicks my butt muscle wise, but I'm determined to shrink my skin too! Any suggestions on foods and such? That I can keep down?? I'm thinking of becoming a vegetarian. LOL

Home Thread...for the thread homeless :)

Long, but good day. I feel like crap, thinking about seeing a Dr. tomorrow. Sinuses are infected, and throat hurts, running fever, the usual crud everyone has. But I feel it dropping lower in my throat, headed for my lungs....then I get really sick. Son showed up, didn't speak for awhile to anyone, there were enough here that there was chaos, so it didn't matter, then he began doing just as I said and acting like nothing happen. Rick told him, it was a family holiday, and he was not going to bring anything up, but they WERE going to discuss what was said, there was a non commital kind of grunt, nothing more. Manda brought a guy she has seen a few times, but they went to school together, and his Mom and I did chemo together back a few years ago. He is a nice kid, but her polar opposite! She is very political, and he is the opposite, she is vegetarian, and he has yet to meet a veggie he likes he jokes! But he had his 2 year old daughter, and we all had fun. They fit in well. I think they are just friends, but who knows!!! Her vegetarian dinner was awesome she said, and everyone seemed to like the normal dinner. Ricks Mom and Dad refused to come to dinner, they went out for chinese, then come to visit us, and then to go visit his sister, but refused to eat with either of us. I do not have enough room for her family of 4 daughter, who are all grown with families too. I simply do not have the space, my home is little. And we were not invited there, she made it known, She actually made it a point to tell us we were welcome anytime, but it was too much for my family to be included too. Which is reasonable, but if I am gone, and take the kids, that leaves my Mom and Dad and brother alone.....and I can't do that. So if they want to pout and eat chinese, more power to them. I packed leftovers to take them tomorrow, as a gesture to say "here ya go, I don't feel too bad for you!" Rick was upset. Youngest DD did not make it til almost everyone was gone, but that is normal. I am glad it is all over, cleaned up, and I can do nothing. I normally love this holiday, and I did not even decorate my house this year! Bah Humbug!! LOL Well I am off to watch Breaking Bad, and go to bed, hoping I feel tons better tomorrow. Hugs to all of you, hope your days were wonderful!

Home Thread...for the thread homeless :)

Well Rick made it home, we got aome more work done in the laundry/pantry/garage....it is able to be walked through, and that in itself is an improvement! Got my ribs cooked, brisket is cooking away. Got the back porch cleaned.....then Kinsey come over and we dyed 18 eggs, and had a blast!! We made special designs, and just had fun! She helped me make a macaroni salad, and make some wild rice to fix in mushrooms for her Mommy and Auntie ( DD's are vegetarians). Then we spent the afternoon taking turns hiding and hunting eggs in the yard! We forwent any "organized" Easter Egg hunts! We went last year, and in her age group they just had eggs dumped on the ground, and thousands of kids, and parents were horrid. So we just did not even mention them. She giggled and hid them as hard as she could for Papa, then did the hot....warm....cold thing to help him find them. She had fun. Tomorrow they will have an egg hunt at church, and people will be nice about it! Rick and I are going to dinner as soon as he finishes putting a fuel filter on Gary's bike. Our work list seems to have no end this weekend!!! Then just between paragraphs now....my phone rings, it is my DIL, asking what she should bring tomorrow, and what time......WTH? We figured they would go to her families, and ignore us the way things are. But he is going to try to pull the old "pretend it never happen" routine. Gary is here now so we will wait to discuss how to handle it when we are alone. Y'all are part of my 'alone' LOL.....you know what I mean!! Well I am off to get dressed to go, and maybe make a cheesecake. Lots to do still......and now ponder the son and DIL thing......

    Spring into March 2010 Bandsters

Good Friday Everyone!!!! Thanks Kendra. I wish I could switch to soft foods. I'm not sure why my doctor has his patients do Clear liquids for four weeks after surgery. I've seen where others go to mooshie (sp) food ten days after surgery. I guess I should not worry or question since it has allowed me to drop what I consider a lot of weight. This weekend is Easter, and my mom always makes a ham and all the side dishes to go with it. It is going to be so hard not to get to eat any of it. Holidays have always been a big deal for my mom, and especially since my dad passed away it is even a bigger deal for her. She loves to cook for us. So I have question that i would love some feed back on. I've not had meat in a while and i'm wondering about some of the vegetarian meats. I've never been a big fan of red meat, i do like chicken and some fish, so i'm wondering if anyone knows if the vegetarian meats are any good? I've heard that some taste like cardboard. Let me know! Have a nice evening. Monica
