    Protein, Protein, Protein

Inner surfer girl I do not find you guys to be rude at all. I am taking it all in. I was giving a menu for what to eat and when to add more. I follow it to the tee. I am not worried about eating bad carbs I was always good about that. My weight gain is only last 2 years I have not been heavy all my life I lost a brother and father in law in the same week that tragic loss made me quit the gym my job and I sat on my butt for a year I gained over 100 pounds. I lost it on Medifast eating 500 calories a day when I stopped boom that and more! I went in to deep depression and started to see a shrink she's the one suggested I get the surgery. I will show you a pic of me from 2013 Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

    Stalled :(

@@lazylyn I'm sure the weight gain is only Water - don't worry! Your body has been through a lot and needs time to adjust. As long as you are sticking with the plan - the weight will come off - you won't fail!!!
  4. A couple of things. My surgeon isn't worried about stretching. Also, as I said, I'm talking about one can of soda over a few hours. Finally, I did look for medically accredited reports on stretching the sleeve by drinking soda and I couldn't find any. This link goes to a website, not a hospital or a doctor. The story was written by the anonymous "OC Staff". Are they licensed surgeons - I doubt it. Also, the "article" the OC Staff link to as a reference was also written by them and is says nothing about soda (see below). My point is that a sleeve is less stretchable than our original stomach. As I said, constant over consumption of anything will cause weight gain and stomach trauma... HOW TO PREVENT THE STRETCH AFTER GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY Eating one or two large meals will not lead to a permanently stretched stomach or issues with your hunger and fullness triggers. However, doing this multiple times can lead to issues. The list below hi-lights key points to reduce the risk of stretching your stomach after gastric sleeve surgery. Limit volume not sweets. Instead of totally limiting every aspect of your diet, give yourself a reward once a week with a special treat limited in size. But do not go out and eat a large meal – regardless of the type of food. Do not drink when you eat. It’s better to drink your fluids an hour or two before eating and/or an hour or two after. This lets the fluids digest and they won’t increase the amount of gas that can build or limit the amount of space for nutrient dense foods. If you do have a bigger than normal meal, make your next meal small and make sure you don’t make larger meals a habit. If you are always feeling hungry, then eat small amounts of healthy snacks in between meals. Almonds are a delicious and healthy way to feel satisfied in between meals. Get a good book with healthy recipes that are geared for people who have gone through gastric sleeve surgery. We’ve got a list of our favorite books here. DO NOT get discouraged. If you fell off the wagon and binged one or two meals or even the entire previous week. The stomach and the mind is an amazingly resilient thing. Start over and start eating normal meals again. Call your surgeon and ask for help before it gets too far out of hand. Get on the online forums and ask others for help. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. Here is a list of our favorite forums. So stretching your stomach after gastric sleeve surgery is not a myth. It can happen and it does happen. Be aware of it and prevent it. Remember how hard the surgery and recovery was? Remember what a big decision you made? Its never too late to change your habits and get back on the right track.
  5. My mother is anorexic her entire life, father is out of shape but not overweight. Both parents do have high cholesterol and strokes despite not being overweight. My older sister has been overweight since childhood, her weight gain started when my mother gave her Coca-Cola instead of potentially contaminated water when they were refugees. When my sister started losing weight from WLS, I gained weight. My little sister was briefly overweight for 1 year during college and has become anorexic like my mother. I no longer keep contact with my family, but all of my close friends have been supportive.
  6. I just wanted to post a follow up on this thread. I had a support group meeting at my bariatric center and asked one of the nuritionists specifically about the no weight gain aspect during the medically supervised period., She said it does vary from insurance policy to policy but most of them would make you start the medically supervised period over again from the beginning if you had a weight gain at one appointment compared to your weight at the previous appointment. So as an example if you have a 6 month supervised period required, and at appointment 4 you had gained weight compared to appointment 3, you would would have to start all over with a new a new appointment 1.
  7. I found that too but might as well not post the studies as it seems people don't want to see these types of truths. That article is wayyyyy too logical. Interesting that the article you posted states to not limit sweets but rather the volume. I'm sure that will be argued with as well. I don't think this is a study. By study I am looking for an actual experiment with a control or double blind controls and results or findings. The problem with so many food based studies is that they are not experiments but survey based. i.e. the issue with drinking diet sodas, does diet soda cause obesity or contribute or is do obese people just happen to drink diet soda? In order to truly know the effect of diet soda on our sleeves we would need to find results of a study where 2 groups were one drinking diet soda and one not. Their diets would need to be the same and their exercise the same and their weight gain/loss and comparative endoscopy results might allow us to draw some real conclusion about the effect of diet soda on your sleeve and weight loss. In the absence of that everything is conjecture and the only sensible alternative is to follow the advice of your physician, not the advice of someone else physician. After all if you hit a stall or a complication it is your actual physician you are going to be looking to help you correct things.
  8. I don't know what else to do, my weight keeps going up regardless of working out daily and counting calories. My insurance doesn't cover WLS so we're thinking going to Mexico. Has anyone with pcos and constant weight gains has success with the sleeve? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Failing my LAP-BAND and myself

Yes I still have my lap band. I think the major reason for the weight gain back is in part to the fact I have had 2 pregnancy and after my last child I had a IUD put in and the hormonal issues were supper bad for me once i got it in. I went from having energy to all ways wanting to sleep it made my body hurt I had major cravings even looking at food I would put on weight. Since I have had the IUD removed I dropped 30 pounds in 5 weeks. I never had a fill either because I was dropping so fast that first year could play a part but I think a lot of it is the issues I had with the IUD since i noticed this past week I am gaining more energy and starting to feel less sore all over but the Dr said it could take some time for my body to fully fix it self from the issues my IUD caused for 2 I had it.

    Water!

Like I said my psychologist is aware of how I am. And no I do not think eating a healthy homade soup everyday is a problem. You do not have to eat a ton of food to lose weight. Soup has a ton of nutrients in it including Protein. It is not canned food with tons of salt and preservative. In fact my nutritionist wrote down the recipe. I will continue to drink the 30 grams of Protein Drink as much as I can. My primary doctor will also check on me and I go to both a psychologist and a psychiatrist. So I am good. In fact it was my psychiatrist a gift for me to even get the surgery. Because she knew how much this weight gain bothered me. I am in good hands if my doctor seems any kind of life threatening issues he will make me get it reversed. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

    Mthfr folate and b12

Yes.. i plan to do the shots every three months. I have been managing it for a couple of years mainly through diet, and plan to do the same now that i am sleeved. I try to eat spinach, kale and greens to get my folate, i stay away from fortified foods .. basically if it doesn't come out of the ground, sea or from an animal i won't eat it. My bloods have been perfect for years, my doc says i am a skinny person in a chubby persons body. My weight gain hasn't been from eating junk... i believe is from screwing up my metabolism from my band... i practically starved for 6 years.. so as soon as i eat anything i gain... What type of MTHFR are you?
  13. @@heidikat72 About the patient that gained 1 lb...is that the total amount of weight gain for the whole 6 months? Or was their weight fluctuating and they gained 1lb and then lost it? I hope I'm making sense because they seem like they make more sense when I say them out loud as opposed to typing them lol. At my weigh in today, I gained 1 lb from last month. I have my period now and that 1 lb is most likely Water weight. I called my patient liaison at my surgeon's office and she left a message that said something along the lines of "if your weight evens out at the end, you'll be alright". I'm just hoping that when I submit all of my stuff to the insurance company, they don't look at this 1 lb gain as me not trying to lose or something.
  14. How does zero calorie and zero sugar diet pop cause you to gain weight? I see Chrystal Light talked about here a lot and it has aspartame and a list of chemicals longer than diet pop. Why is that recommend over diet pop? Just because a doctor says so is not good enough for me. When I was a kid our family doctor told us we would all have heart attacks if we continued to eat eggs. Anti eggs was the fad back then and most doctors went with it. Now eggs are considered a super food. What happened? Why did doctors suddenly change? Diet pop has been out for 50 years and yet there are very few studies that actually study causation. The ones I have found show that people do not gain anymore weight by drinking diet pop. I personally have lost 70 pounds and counting drinking diet pop. None of the ingredients in diet pop has been proven to cause weight gain. Diet pop is just a carbonated version of Water and Chrystal Light.
  15. Here's the problem with that study and many others. It just proves correlation. Nowhere does it mention what these people's diets were outside of diet pop. Most people who drink diet pop were already overweight and had these diseases. We have no idea what else those people in that study were eating or drinking outside of diet pop so how can we say diet pop is the cause? The very few studies that exist that dry to show causation by controlling the diet of the participants have not found a link to weight gain by drinking diet pop. I ate fruit when I was gaining weight. It would be like saying fruit causes weight gain but let's forget the chips, pizza, and Taco Bell was eating as well As to the Water thing, the main ingredient in diet pop is water so it hydrates you as well. What is baffling to me is people will mix aspartame and chemicals in their water and thing it's better than diet pop.

Are You Overinvested in Your Job?

While my weight gain has affected my health some, and my family life more (mostly through extreme laziness), I definitely agree that my weight is negatively impacting my work as well. As far as time off, I have the kind of job that it's almost not even worth taking a few days off because you walk back in to all sorts of issues and problems... So taking time off to heal 3/4 weeks is scary in my case, but I don't want to rush back either after the surgery and risk a problem from, for example, lifting something heavy because I forgot I couldn't yet - for that split second... Ahhhhhhh!

    AETNA INSURANCE? ?

I had Aetna also. My surgeon told me from day one that Aetna is one of the toughest insurances to get approval from and they want to see no weight gain at all during the 6 month supervised weight loss. I gained 8 pounds in the last 2 months of my 6 months required for approval. My surgeon had me do one week of the liver reduction diet prior to my appointment for month 7 and I lost 12 pounds.....the 8 I gained and another 4. They submitted right after and I was approved in a week. Had my surgery 4/21. Sent from my SM-G920P using the BariatricPal App
  20. Well here it goes. I had vertical banding years ago and my Dr. never indicated if soda was good or bad. In the beginning I could not because of the small pouch, but as I stretched it out soda was fine. BUT I do think soda did contribute to the stretching and expansion of the pouch, and in turn helped cause the weight gain and other issues I now have. I am having revision to Bypass and already steer clear of soda all together. I learned from B4. FYI: My son recently had the sleeve MLS and even though his Dr did not specifically say no to soda, he cannot handle the gas pain it causes.

Gained 10 pounds in 6 months

@@anthonyb It also depends on what you are eating. If you go from 1200 low carb calories to 1600-1800 carby calories, you are going to gain weight, just because your liver is going to be larger. Are you drinking alcohol? Did you exercise and stop? Are you going through a stressful time in your life? There are so many factors to weight gain.
  22. The dark green BM is sometimes caused by drinking or eating things with red or blue food dye!! (Think artificially flavored grape things) As for the weight gain... You've done it before, you can do it again!! Start with the 5 day reset and do whatcha gotta do!!! Good luck!!!

    AETNA INSURANCE? ?

I did. I was denied due to weight gain during the program. I had to go through the appeal process.

Gained 10 pounds in 6 months

I'm not a doctor, but based on the limited info given, I think it's probably the extra calories. After WLS your body will never be able to handle a full calorie load without gaining weight, because the surgery itself does alter our metabolism as well. You would either need to substantially exercise more or cut back down to prevent weight gain.
  25. For the dark green bowel movements, contact your primary doc. If you aren't eating a lot of leafy greens, then it could indicate excess bile - not saying that is what it is, just that you should discuss with your primary and let the doctor determine if it is something to be concerned about. And don't beat yourself. You have identified the problem with the weight gain, you know what to do - get back on plan. You are catching it early. And you always have support here.
