    September 2023 Surgery buddies

Tired but feeling good. I do still feel a little achy in my abs but it continues to improve daily. I had a Zoom call with a nurse this morning and she was happy with my healing progress and with what I've been eating (averaging 80-85g of protein every day). My scale this morning said I'm down 11 lbs since surgery day last Thursday and now 31 lbs since the beginning of my two weeks of pro-op liquid diet at the end of last month.

6 days post op and STARVING.

I never lost my hunger when I had my sleeve. It really sucked. Ironically, when I had the revision to the bypass, I lost hunger. I'm now 1 week shy of being 3 months post op from the revision and I still don't have much in the way of hunger. Try having the unflavored protein shakes, since the flavored is too sweet. Have mostly broths and anything else you can that has protein in it. Right now, that's the most important thing. Definitely get your fluids and protein in.

    Weight gain/stall 1 month pist

I had my surgery on 8/15 as well. I am still losing steadily. I am still around 400 calories a day, even on soft foods. First week after surgery was 3.4 pounds down, 2nd week was 14.4, 3rd week was 6.8, 4th week was 6.2, today was 5.4 lost each week. 36.2 pounds lost since surgery (I am on the larger scale for loss tho LOL). 56 pounds down since Pre Op started. 75.2 pounds down since life style changes. You will get there, my daughter had the surgery the same time I did, and she has hit stalls where she gained .5 pounds one week. I weigh in about 3 times a week, but only 1 is what I record. I am going to start weighing in only once per week. Your body is adjusting so it will take some time.
  4. Hi, I had gastric sleeve on 8/17 and developed an itchy hives rash on my chest, back and butt around 2 weeks after. I still have them, but it has slowly gotten better. My bariatric office had no concrete answers. I think my bariatric multivitamin chew may be the culprit. High in niacin B3…I may be having a reaction. I stopped taking them a few days ago and started to get a little better. I have had the random skin infection in the past, but nothing like this. Unfortunately I have no answers.

    September surgery buddies!!

Today is my 1 year anniversary and I am happy and sad at the same time. I got so very close to goal but I have spent the last month in a stall so I really don't have that awesome feeling that I hoped to have at the 1 year mark. I know this stall will pass too and I'm happy with how far I've come. I made it to normal bmi which I didn't think I would ever see again. I still want to lose at least 10 more lbs so that I'm safely in the normal range but 10 lbs seems doable after the last year. I still have trouble accepting that I've changed but little things make me so happy, like crossing my legs and feeling bones that were hidden. I'm happy my hair has stopped falling out and is starting to slowly grow back. Slower than before but I'll take slow as long as it grows lol. I started a journal at the beginning and set goals for myself and guessed at sizes my arms, thighs, waist etc should be. I had no idea what I should set those to so I looked them up in google for averages for women my height and I actually hit or beat all those measurements except my waist I set to 30 inches and I got to 33. I have a ton of extra skin there though and hope to have that removed so I still might hit that goal I took pictures along the way and wore the exact same outfit and its amazing so see how far I've come. I'll see if I can figure out how to add it here. Its not a great picture of me but it for sure shows the weight loss . I hope everyone else is doing well and I hope to see more updates from others. Take care!
  6. I've found different foods to process differently (bypass +hiatal hernia repair, June 6th of this year). My wife made a Bolognese sauce (ground turkey) that went down like it was meant to, and caused no gastro-intestinal distress. @Penguin733, fwiw, I suspect that at 7 weeks, I was just getting into real food. I got religion when I got stopped up, and got the "foamies." Talking to surgeon, and folks here, I was told to measure or weigh. I now know better what I can eat, both in terms of volume and nature of the the food. (FWIW, I had a nice small loin lamb chop tonight and et the whole thing!). Give yourself some time and also recognize that some foods are harder to digest than others; if you look at the surgical procedure that you underwent, you'll understand that there is a stronger filter in place than before; that can help you lose weight. In my case, it also reduced the amount of gastric acid blowing back up my esophagus, which was the driver for me. I've also lost a massive amount of weight in a short time. I respect what this operation can do.
  7. I just went in Tuesday, Weight was 290 and was told needed to lose 15lbs to get to the next step. Once I get there I call to do the next step which I assume is the psychological part of it. So I downloaded MyFitnessPal app and am sticking to 1600 calories, making sure I hit protein and staying with the range of fats, carbs is impossible I ate broccoli and cauliflower and my carbs went over by a ton! So I think no one has gotten fat by eating veggies so I am not going to stress out about that. I weighed myself this morning and I dropped 4.5lbs. I'm sure that is the salt and water weight, but 15lbs seems very attainable. I will start incorporating walks next week since my energy is going up. I have a goal of doing this surgery during my kids winter break so my mindset is pure focus! We can do this!! I am more than happy to be an accountability partner if you need one!
  8. I didn't hit protein goals until about 10 weeks probably. It's very hard in those early days and I just gave myself the grace knowing I'd get there. It was hard because of the small amounts your stomach could handle and it got so much easier once I settled into a good routine and started being able to eat more per meal. The biggest way I get huge amounts of protein daily is through yoghurt, buy high protein ones and add protein powder. I have a Ninja Creami and make frozen yoghurt that gives me heaps of protein. My current fave flavour is Malted Milk and a serve is 28 grams of protein. My biggest suggestion is to really plan your days out and start eating as soon as you can otherwise time can get away from you. Focus on high protein foods, meats, dairy, legumes, low carb wraps are great. I have a wrap with cheese and salsa every day, it's about 15 grams of protein and delicious with a quick stint in the microwave. I'm not great with fluids myself. It will get easier, be kind to yourself and just try to do your best each day. I'm down 72 pounds so my early struggles did not affect my progress. This is a marathon not a sprint.

    When did regain start?

Not everyone experiences a bounce back regain. And not everyone experiences a larger regain. If it does happen there’s often a reason: complacency/&or bad habits returning, a too restrictive way of eating, lifestyle changes, medical/health issues, emotional issues, settling of your weight, … I had a regain of a good two kgs (about 5lbs) rather quickly a few months into my second year so earlier than the usual 3rd year. Didn’t gain any more. Wasn’t happy but was accepting it. Couldn’t really put my finger on why. No dietary changes, no activity changes during that time. But what I did have was a gall removal at 25 months which caused an protein absorption issue. Then almost at the three year mark we realised the gall removal also stopped me absorbing my HRT & caused other issues. Went from a tablet to a patch & slowly but surely I lost a good kilo of that regain over 6 months +/-. I’ve been sitting pretty stable again for about 6 months or so. I keep an eye on the scales, monitor my portions, watch my food choice & fingers crossed I continue to remain stable.
  10. QUICK OVERVIEW: 8 days post-op Gastric sleeve No problem drinking. Not really eating/no appetite. Ok for proteins shakes and electrolytes. Lost 10 pounds in a week Feeling permanently bloated/full despite not eating, and stomach is still swollen/distended. Gas pain went away on day 3. Pain came back in left shoulder, on&off since day 6 No pain whatsoever inside the belly (the actual stomach) since surgery, except today it started. Thought I was maybe hungry so I had a bit of liquid food (as per my plan). Did not help. It's not excrutiating but very uncomfortable pain right in the middle of stomach area. I did a lot more today (walking, errands, etc).... and i had sex yesterday No other symptoms. No fever, no nausea, etc. Could it be a leak?? (Also, I'm anxious naturally)
  11. I've used this forum so far to ask questions, and obviously, people who are trying to adjust figure out if their experience is "normal" or have some issue with the process, and are going to ask questions-- some posts/threads document the challenges to this "adjustment." I thought it might be valuable to lay out the positives. I don't much care how you got to the surgery point- whether by some unhealthy attachment to eating or anything else. But for whatever reasons we underwent surgery, I'll assume that the path we were on was not healthy and beyond that, our quality of life was compromised by weight. So, I'll say-- after 3 months, X weeks, I'm far more mobile. I can walk now, without feeling out of breath. I fit into clothes I couldn't-- I look and feel "better"- yeah, it is tricky to learn how to eat, and it seems like things changed (they did), but totally worth it in my estimation. I had gotten to the point where I was eating a FODMAP diet (to reduce gastric blow-back up my esophagus) and it was more limited in food choices than what I face now, post surgery. I'm not sure I could have done this with diet and exercise. I did that in 2010, went from 250 to 180 through several hours of exercise a day plus hardcore paleo. But now I'm older, and I really needed help. The surgery and low volume diet plus movement (which I could not do at a certain point-scary) has made a quantum change in my physical being, and given me a revitalized outlook on life.
  12. I have noticed the same thing. I’m about 6 months out from my sleeve op and can eat about half of what I previously could (which to be fair was a lot!) My weight loss has stalled and I know it’s because of the type and amount of food I eat. I saw my doctor recently and they recommended getting back to basics and focusing on protein and water intake to get back on track. They didn’t seem concerned about the pouch stretching. Good luck with your continued weight loss!

    Revision from VSG to Bypass

I went for my EGD last week due to all the GERD I have been experiencing for over 5 months which has got worse and no OTC or RX medication is touching it. Results of EGD: - Localized mild inflammation characterized by erythema and linear erosions was found in the prepyloric region of the stomach. Moderate bile reflux into sleeve. Chronic Gastritis. Doctor has me on RX Pepcid and I see him in 6 weeks to discuss revision to Bypass. Personally I wish I would have went with the bypass instead of the sleeve when I had my WLS. How was everyone's experience who had the revision to bypass that experience GERD. Was it gone after?
  14. *raises hand* me too! i had a breast lift with extended arm lift (i.e., adresses the "side boob" issue) back in 2019...also had a tummy tuck all in one surgery. it depends i think one how long your surgeon is comfortable with u being under as well as how fast he/she works. my doc had a policy max of 6 or 7 (can't remember) hours under general anesthesia i think. he said he was done with me in under 6. personally, despite the recovery being very "challenging" (to put it mildly, ha!) i'd still do it all in one shot vs 3 separate surgeries: the healing was unpleasant enough that i was glad i only had to do it once (vs. three!!) but im a baby and was NOT a good patient so...i know of others on here whose recovery was a walk in the park. anyway: arm lift, breast lift tummy tuck...so so happy with them. the breast lift was actually the surprise favourite for me. being able to go bra-commando and remain perky is AWESOME. good luck! ❤️

    When did regain start?

we all probably have different definitions of what constitutes a "significant" regain or what is considered "quick" in regaining that amount. further to that, we are all different weights and sizes so a regain of 10-15 lbs means very different things to someone who is 100 lbs vs someone who is 150 lbs vs someone who is 200 lbs with that said, i "regained" about 9-ish lbs in about a year starting around 1 year post op. HOWEVER: this was from my lowest weight of 109 around 1 year post op....and i wasn't there long. i "regained" to 115-ish and stayed there for several months, then hung around 118-ish for a couple years. going up or down 3 or so lbs with daily fluctuations, but my moving average stayed basically at the stated weights. i'll be exactly 5 years post op in a few weeks and i have been closer to 120-ish for the past 1-2 years. this morning i weighed in at 116.6 (but this is a bit of an anomaly for me as i recently lost a couple lbs by quitting smoking...but that is another story, ha!) anyway, i feel like i digressed a bit there, but the point i was trying to get to is that in MY experience i am strictly CICO. i gain when i eat more than my maintenance cals*, and i lose when i eat less...and i have 5 years of of My Fitness Pal food logs and body weight measurements to prove it. *i have been operating on a maintenance cals amt of about 1800 a day for a couple years now.

    Could it be a leak???

You’ve had a pretty major abdominal surgery so it isn’t unusual to still feel bloated or swollen for a good week or so. Your shoulder pain indicates you haven’t breathed out all your surgical gas yet. Even though liquids pass through your tummy more quickly, they could be making you feel bloated especially if you’re not used to drinking large amounts of fluids. Check your shake for sugar alcohols (end in ‘itol’) as they can make you feel bloated. Lactose can also cause bloating. As for the abdominal pain, it may be the sex you had last night. It may have been too much at the moment. Remember all the sutures & staples holding your tummy together & all the muscles & other organs that were pushed & prodded during the surgery. We usually told just to go for short gentle walks in the beginning. I added a list of the symptoms of a leak below. If you are experiencing some of these head to your nearest medical centre. Check in with your surgeon if you are still concerned. All the best. Rapid heart rate Fever Stomach pain Drainage from a surgical wound Nausea and vomiting Pain in the left shoulder area Low blood pressure Decreased urine output

    Post surgery questions

Everyone has questions & it’s not uncommon to be a bit nervous. I mean you’ve never experienced this before so have no reference points. Everyone has differences in their experiences in the first few days after surgery. Just depends on how bodies react. This was my experience. I didn't have any pain bending over or sitting up. A little discomfort maybe but I just moved slowly to ensure I didn’t accidentally damage or strain my abdominal area. I got in & out of bed easily & could sleep on my side with ease straight away. (First night I had a compression machine on my legs so had to sleep on my back.) You’ll be given strong pain meds to manage most of any pain you may have. I took my last one on day 4 but I probably didn’t need it. I didn’t have any gas pain. I didn’t vomit after surgery & I can’t recall any heartburn but I was taking a PPI by day 4. You should be prescribed these as we tend to still produce the same amount of stomach acid as we did for our larger tummy & food intake for a while & the PPI reduces this acid. I did have to spit out excess saliva on day 2 (not vomit). This was because my throat was swollen & irritated from the breathing tube inserted during surgery. I just kept a sick bag beside me and spat into that. Warning - details ahead! I had one sudden & unexpected bout of severe diarrhoea. No warning cramping just ran out of me as I was walking to the bathroom on day 3 I think. It was dark & smelly - blood from the surgery. But that was all. Then the constipation began - lol! (A friend was advised to wear disposable underwear for a week or so just in case this happened. I remember her saying she was glad as wet farts are real.) No change to peeing just more frequent as your fluid intake increases. All the best. PS - I had an extra day in hospital because my back went into spasm not from the surgery as such just from sub consciously holding some stress/tension in my body.
  18. so i recently lost 3 lbs. not the downside-of-a-normal-daily-weight-fluctuation-loss, or a oh-i-just-had-a-mega-poop kinda loss, but an ACTUAL 3 lbs loss that has stayed off based on a 2 week moving weight average. now everyone and my mother has said something or other in the past couple weeks in the tune of "omigod are you losing weight?!?" or "you're not on a diet AGAIN are you?!!". didn't give it much thought until this AM when i asked my Mr this morning if he thinks i look thinner these days and he nodded (i can always count in him on a low-key, no-big-deal kinda response). so i guess it is noticeable? anyway the point of this is that when i was much heavier, no one would even notice (nor comment) on any appearance change in me if/when i lost up to 20-25 lbs (including Mr.). but now, at 3 measly lbs loss, somehow the world is ending to the busybody-nation. sometimes i feel like i have to defend being thinner as much as i had to defend being heavier. not really an NSV, more of an annoyance (the comments)...and also just another thing that thought u were done with, but not really. 🤷🏻‍♀️
  19. Hi all - I'm so sorry to hear of what you are facing guys; I'm sure you had not bargained for that! I wondered what procedure you all had. I had a gastric bypass and seem to have healed well thus far. I only feel nauseous very occasionally and the feeling is fleeting and thus I'm not actually put off of eating my food. I have not yet experienced 'dumping' and threw up only once much earlier on. I have not yet had a bad reaction to anything that I have eaten but I do try to be careful. I'm three and a half months post surgery and feeling ok. I swim daily and feel sufficiently healed so far. Have you all spoken to your health team? xx

    October 2023 surgery buddies

I just started my pre-op diet today. I'm very fortunate and feeling very thankful that in addition to liquids, I get to eat 7 ounces of protein a day. Two weeks to go until my surgery.
  21. I would get the drinks with the sweetener of your choice and just add the unflavored protein to them, or brew tea and add the erythritol to it, then add the protein powder. I hate artificial sweeteners but I have decided part of my journey to surgery is learning to tolerate them as this is a lifelong change and I don't do well with sugar alcohols like erythritol. My surgeon requires the 2 week pre surgery liver reduction diet to be done with the Premier Protein premade shakes and those are sucralose based... I think I have like 10 flavors of them now. LOL I still cringe with the first few sips but having them ice cold helps. With fruit drinks I find a sour component helps cut the artificial taste and sometimes watering them down more than the package states. I like adding cold brew coffee concentrate to the shakes, the bitter component balances out the sweetness. I'll have to get decaf for after surgery! But really, the pumpkin spice flavored one with coffee concentrate makes a pretty decent pumpkin spice latte!
  22. I really get this. Its your body and if you need a lower buffer weight then its your business. If your hubby did not know you had intentionally dieted, Would he have said anything ? I can tell you now that my husband would not know. We have been away in Spain for 2 weeks so my husband saw a bit more of me than usual. I was laying in bed without covers and clothes, it was so hot. My hip bones and ribs were prominent. My skin hangs off me, its not pretty. He said I think its time you gave up trying to loose weight now, you are skin and bone. My local doctor wants me to loose at least 40lbs more to get in a healthy range. I am happy where I am, I look good in my clothes. Who is right ? Me ! So congrats on your loss and bugger everyone else
  23. Thank you both! During my pre-op appointment, my surgeon told me I needed to utilize a protein that contained the vitamins/minerals for at least the first week after surgery, as you can’t take a multivitamin (probably meant eating them?). I didn’t think to ask if I could just take a liquid vitamin. Probably a stupid question, I just really don’t want to mess anything up. I will likely just call to confirm . Thanks again!
  24. I’ve had my hair coloured every 4 weeks for years before & after my surgery (gotta hide that grey) & continued my usual drying/styling routine. Don’t believe it affected how much hair I lost. The hair you lose during the usual 3+/- months is have that you were already going to shed. You’re just shedding it more quickly. The only thing I would worry about is bleach as it is more harsh on your hair. I remember having streaks many years ago & I shed more hair than usual. So I wouldn’t want to increase the hair loss by doing that again. Plus the anaesthetic can make the texture of your hair change & make it feel drier.

    Toilet issues

I had a very interesting conversation with my doctor recently. I was having some issues I thought may be a bug which included soft motions & wanting to go again later in the day. Did some tests & it showed I had some constipation. Not blockages or impaction but some traffic slowing speed bumps (that’s my analogy 😁). Apparently your body’s response is to thin out your poop so it can go over the speed bump but it also means the bowel isn’t fully emptying hence wanting to go more often. Treatment was a stool softener taken one night, none on night two & then one on nights three & four. It did help. This may not be your issue but worth a conversation with your doctor.
