Hey everyone! I am just beginning this journey and I have a lot of thoughts. One of my major concerns is, what is it going to be like 5 or 10 years out. I am really interested in the lap band. On one hand, I'm excited, and on the other, I'm a little scared. All normal feelings I'm sure. Has anyone had long term success yet?

I love my sleeve...wouldn't change a thing. Only need to lose 60 lbs going in..had my surgery 10/30 and so far I've lost 34 lbs. It's a transition but I have a friend with a band and she has more problems with certain foods than me. Certain things really hurt her, as for me I can't eat a lot of anything but nothing really hurts. Love my sleeve and I'm loving watching my shape come back...slowly...this way my skin isn't so flabby.

Hi, before you get too concerned about your body rejecting the port as suggested above, you should call your doctor, make an appointment to go and see them. I had my surgery on 7 april, and 10 weeks later, my large incision has only just now finally healed completely. I had an infection on the left edge, which caused open wound about 1/4 inch across. I had 3 courses of strong antibiotics to help rid the infection.

Frightened of future . . .
McButterpants replied to Luana526's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 10 months out and I have an appetite. It's not the same as before surgery, but some days I feel strong hunger and some days I can graze all day long. Here's how it's different than before surgery - when I feel hunger, true hunger, I eat a Protein filled meal. Breakfast is a Jimmy Dean turkey sausage pattie and a scrambled egg topped with some cheese. This keeps me satisfied for hours, especially if I wait 45 minute to drink anything. Prior to surgery, I'd be snacking in an hour or two. So I'm eating less than before at the meal and I'm not eating as soon after the meal...the sleeve is working. On days that I graze, it's usually because I gave in to the carb monster. Maybe I ate part of a bagel for breakfast or I ate something else with a lot of carbs. For me, carbs are like a drug - once I give in, it affects me the entire day. If I identify it, I can usually break it with a shake and a lot of will power. If I don't identify it I will spend a lot of time in the kitchen grabbing a few bites here and there. Early on, like the first 6 months, you need to change your tastes (cutting carbs), start moving your body, and change your lifestyle (getting Snacks out of the house, living the "protein first" rule, etc.). The sleeve helps you with that - it's simply a tool in your toolbox along with your will power, good choices, exercise routine, etc. Those are all tools you have in your toolbox that you need to use. WLS is not a magic bullet - it is hard work, harder than I ever expected it to be. Every day I need to make a commitment to myself to life my life a certain way - I need to eat protein packed meals, I need to limit my carbs and I need to exercise. Those are the things I can control. Some days it's hard work, other days are easier. I wouldn't say I have a "dieters' mentality", this is just my new normal and how I live my life now. -
Hi again. I was banded on 12/10 and had my 2nd follow up appt today. From the 2 weeks prior to my surgery til today I have lost 23 lbs!! Almost a pound per day since the band. I am so psyched. I feel great but still have some twinges in the incisions. Trying not to bend or stretch too much. Overall I am feeling great. Glad I did it.

I am newly banded - 12/10. Doing fine but feeling full all the time. I guess from swelling? On full liquids and looking forward to my favorite mashed cauliflower in 2 weeks. So far so good.

I was banded 12/10. Lost 20 lbs right away between the pre op diet and being afraid to eat. Then I got stuck. Plateau'd for 3 weeks as the swelling subsided and I could eat more. I didn't gain but it was so frustrating. Now suddenly I am losing again. Really have to concentrate on what and how much I am eating. I get my first fill next week. Down 26 lbs total so far. Yes, it is hard and frustrating, but it is such a relief to be losing weight and not gaining it. It's just a daily struggle to eat right and healthy. But I'm doing it! Thank you to all who are on this site. Very reassuring and helpful. Xoxo

Gosh, it is so easy to forget given that you haven't been feeling any restriction in years. I'm newly banded and have had my first fill, but not yet in the "sweet spot." My second fill will be after Christmas. The dietician I work with has trained me to chew, chew, chew--20 to 30 chews before swallowing. After you resolve your current issue try making a game out of chewing. I know it sounds funny but it helps me if I count in my head and envision a train...chew, chew, chew. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

Im guessing that if they already made your date they are pretty sure the insurance will say yes. Remember they deal with the same insurances daily and know exactly what makes them say yes. I was in the same situation as you. My date was 10/22 and i didnt find out til 5 days before. When the insurance said yes the office even moved up my surgery a day (which actualy worked better) and just a little advice i told my boyfriend not to take off the surgery day just to come after work and to take off the next day. That was a really smart move because i needed him the first day home and turned out i needed him the second too! Goodluck!!!!!

Weightloss goals and rewarding your accomplishments?
bikrchk replied to Saffiredreamer's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ziplining was one thing... I hit goal 2 months ago and I'm scheduled on Saturday for the zip tour! Skydiving may be the next! I decided to shed an extra 10, so once that's off I'll be scheduling that jump! I didn't really go mini-goals, just looking and feeling great and the new wardrobe was reward enough! -
Still sitting in office waiting to be seen for my FIRST appt at 10:30. They set up EKG for 11:30...that appt is toast. Not getting off to a great start. Met a new bander she looked great!

I need help getting my big butt back on the wagon.
marathonman posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ok, so here is the deal. I have been way off track for far too long. I just need some encouragement. I am finding it really hard to not eat everything in sight at night when I get home from work. I get up at 2:30 am and get home at 4:30 pm most nights. Through the day I can refrain from overeating. I hold myself to around 500 cal or so. But when I get home It is a whole different story. It has been 18 mo since last fill. I made another apointment on Aug. 10. I went pre surgery 323 pounds down to 212. I am guessing myself at around 250 or so. I am very ashamed to even go to the doc. Well anyway, thanks for letting me vent. -
I am down 70lbs. and embarrassingly enough, without exercise. The first six fills I lost nothing but finally got my band in the place it needs to be. I'm surprised everyone seems to be dealing with the same issues as myself. Usually the first half of the week I feel like my band may have broke because I could eat tons then the latter half I'm basically on liquids. Funny thing is my friend asked what exactly it was that I ate to feel the band was broke and I told her I could eat half a chicken breast and almost a full piece of pizza...the realization is when I assume I'm "pigging out" it's still not that much food. The only tricky part is understanding when I can eat and I can't. If my band is super tight for 4 days I know I could have a serving of ice cream or a small slurpee and be ok but when I actually am eating I have to check myself and be like "marisa why are you at 7-11 getting a slurpee when you actually ate a full meal today". So far I've caught myself and ate accordingly. Since Thanksgiving I feel like this band is truly working and I'm working with it. Couldn't be happier. Side note: I had dinner with a man that was banded 10 years earlier, he said his band no longer works. As he proceeded to tell me his issues I sat there and watched him take and entire rack of ribs and cut them into little pieces and pour an obscene amount of ketchup to make a Soup like meal. At that moment I couldn't have been happier...after 10 years it wasn't his band that gave up....it was him!!!

I was banded a year ago March 23rd and I am down 112 pounds! (From 264 to 152.) I have gone from a size 18/20 to a size 8! I crave and want food normally, but am full much quicker. My restriction seems to go from not enough to too much from day-to-day. It is still a learning process as to how to eat successfully every time. Every time I think I want to call and get an unfill because I can hardly eat, I have a day where I feel like a bottomless pit. Also, I am now 10 weeks pregnant with baby #2!!!

Can't believe I have been living this new life for almost 3 months already. I have pretty much became used to the water/protein regime, I can usually get enough Protein in during the day, but I still drink one bottle of Isopure every day. I guess I am strange, but I don't mind it. I pretty much know exactly how much I can eat of different foods now. I can go out and eat at a restaurant now and be comfortable. The weirdest thing is when I get asked what I want to drink when eating out. When I say nothing., I get the strangest looks. I am down 65 pounds which is great, but 10 pants sizes which is the best. My wife keeps telling me that I look like a homeless guy with my baggy clothes and a very bushy beard. I have had facial hair for 16 years, but I haven't trimmed it since I retired a year ago. I surprised her the other day when she got home from work by being clean-shaven and in clothes that fit! I bought a shirt in a large---I haven't worn a large since just after high school! Let's hear how everyone else is doing? What are your greatest challenges and rewards now?

Question to those have been successfully banded. I lost about 21 lbs since June first. 10 of those was from my pre op. I have stop losing weight and at a stand still. Could it be because I need my band filled? I didn't have it filled during surgery. My first fill is on the 17th of July. My nerves are on edge because now I am thinking "what if I am in that small percentage that is not successful with the band". Should I be worried? Is this something that happens? Thanks

any suggestions???
Blueeyesinca95 replied to kajunlady38's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
None of us can really help you with those questions unfortunately. As all insurances have different policies and procedures on getting qualified for the surgery. I was very fortunate and didn't have the supervised diet plan or weigh-ins. My PCP referred me, my surgeon documented my problems, had the pysch and nutrtion exams and then off for insurance approval. 5 days later insurance approved and then 1/16/09 I had surgery. This all started 10/24/08. So in less than 3 months I had everything done. My advice to you would be to call your insurance company and ask what their requirements for approval for the lapband. I did this with my insurance and they told me everything I needed to do. I hope this information helps! -

Considering Band to Sleeve. Where do I start?
CowgirlJane replied to fghtffyrdmns's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am terrible to give advice - I struggled with the band, for the most part unsuccessfully, for 10 years before I took the plunge to make a change. I do think you need to be very careful to not be overfilled as that can cause many problems. You SHOULD NOT be vomiting regularly. I am told the band is better now and you should be able to lose weight without needing to carry a barf bag with you. For me, I was either constantly hungry, or in pain when I ate dense Protein. I just didn't do well. I guess it seems awfully early to give up on the band, maybe a second opinion, or maybe working with your current team on finding that "sweet spot" -
i am about 25 days out and consume tons of dary ( haha not tons but you know what i mean) i have 2 big 10 oz protein shakes with skim every day, cheeses, yogurt etc.... no issues so far, i hope that i don't have issues.

I had my band in 01/05 and to me it was very painful the first 4 days. I have a very low tolerance for pain. I had my revision on 12/20/13 and it was painless, hardly any pain, I was a little tender on left side for abt two to three days. I was really nervous abt the pAin w the sleeve. I had watch several u tube videos..some said no pain and others said worst pain in their life. So I wasn't really sure what to think. I was really scared but went ahead with it. When I came to I couldn't believe that it didn't hurt. I was pleasantly surprised and oh so relieved. No my only problems was EXTREME nausea and Diarrhea... My diarrhea has stop and the nausea not quiet as bad. Good luck in your venture
