  1. I agree with everything the above responses have given. I would add a few from my personal experience: I have bipolar disorder and have to take 10 pills a night. I took them the night I had my surgery (surgery was 1300). It was a bit challenging because I could only take tiny sips of water, but I managed. The first week after surgery, it would take almost an hour to get all ten pills down, but now a month out, I can take about 3 pills at a time (before I could take all ten) and be done in about 8 minutes. I didn't find it hard to wipe compared to how hard it was to sit up from a lying down position. My bed is low, so can't answer that part, but expect pain on sitting up/changing positions for the first week. I have been working from home and I went back to work after two weeks. I had really bad brain fog for the first two weeks and didn't do anything except stare at the wall. At a month out, I am just a bit tired, but mostly bored. Good luck!
  2. It has been 13 years since I began my journey with many ups and downs, failures and victories... And it is still fresh in my mind how it felt then and sometimes now to have no control over food. I am thankful for having the opportunities that I have had to help me. Even losing 1 lb. a month, I am happy that I am not gaining 10. Better to research on ways I can improve emotionally, mentally, physically to take care of myself in order to beat this monster problem for me that had plagued me my entire life, obesity. I think too high of expectations on WLS can cause many people to fail or worse, depression. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

Do you have a ribbed dress, too? DO MODEL for us... And, that pale blush jacket again - I want to borrow! I am wearing the Moto jacket and rib dress to a special baby shower and luncheon. Our wedding flower girl all grown up - and having her first baby girl. I have NEVER worn this outfit outside my closet or home as of yet. With Covid all events for the opportunity to wear FAB things cancelled! Until now. I'll still wear my mask (my first calculated risk after 19 months) since it is with a group of ladies - many I do not know. And, it's indoors. Oh boy! ...Had so much fun collecting things for her gift basket. These miniature outfits cracked me up! Arabesque - do you have a ribbed dress to model? Fun.

Food cravings 6 weeks post op

I probably ate fried foods at about 10 months post-op. Pasta maybe about the same time. What your saying is a doctor wouldn't give you a date. That's because he would rather you didn't do it at all, which is the prudent thing to (not) do. Eventually, you will need to come to peace with these things. Wait a few months longer if you can. Good luck, Tek

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Surgery scheduled 10/25 on day 3 of my pre op liquid diet and really going crazy craving pasta. I feel like if I get it out of my system I will be fine the rest of the time but am scared if I eat it today it will affect me 11 days from now . Any input on a one time cheat during that pre op liquid only window?
  7. Well, except the potatoes have to go so you'll starve to death. (Kidding!) Let me give you an example from the liquid and soft food stages. Someone else can chime in if they like about the "regular" food so you know what to expect. There's also a whole huge thread called "Food Before and After" with photos in the Lounge. I am in the US though, and every surgeon has different requirements. I am in this phase supposed to be going for 80-100 g protein a day and about 800 calories. (I am very active, my calorie count is higher than might be normal for this phase.) One week after surgery (still in the liquid phase): 2 Core Power Chocolate Protein shakes 1 container raspberry fat free skyr 300 ml chicken broth with 11 g of cream of rice cooked into it 120 ml sugar-free Jello 120 ml sugar-free Jello with protein powder 1 bottle isopure (protein water) TOTAL: 111 g protein, 37 g carbs, 11 g fat, 691 calories Yesterday (soft foods phase): 1 wedge La Vache Qui Rit 95 g deli turkey 1 core power chocolate shake 0.5 c tuna salad with fat free mayonnaise 1 small portion ma po tofu 30 g basmati rice 120 ml sugar-free Jell-O 1 container fat-free, sugar-free tapioca pudding TOTAL: 88 g protein, 49 g carbohydrates, 19 g fat, 719 calories
  8. I got some interesting pictures of my insides today. Reason for Multidisciplinary Case Review: lap adjustable gastric band by Dr. Johnson on 6/6/2011. Had emergent fluid removal from band with dr. Svendsen on 9/10/21. She had been experiencing severe reflux, regurgitation, choking at night, night time cough, vomiting nearly everyday and abdominal pain after eating, Some of the symptoms have resolved after the fluid removal. She continues to have heartburn and epigastric pain. A comprehensive review of imaging and relevant past medical history occurred. Upper GI Series (9/8/2021): Gastric band located below the diaphragm with widening phi angle measuring 66 degrees. The proximal pouch has migrated into the chest consistent with a hiatal hernia. There is dilatation of the distal esophagus and esophageal dysmotility Upper GI Endoscopy (10/6/21): - Tortuous esophagus. - Normal esophageal mucosa. Biopsied. - Z-line irregular, 38 cm from the incisors. - 2 cm hiatal hernia. - Gastric band slipped 2-3 cms distally. - Body and antral gastritis. Biopsied. - Multiple duodenal polyps. Biopsied. biopsy Results (10/7/21): A) DUODENUM, POLYPS, BIOPSY: 1. Gastric (fundic) heterotopia 2. Normal background duodenum; negative for celiac disease 3. Negative for dysplasia and malignancy STOMACH, ANTRUM, BIOPSY: 1. Normal gastric antral mucosa 2. Negative for Helicobacter C) ESOPHAGUS, DISTAL, BIOPSY: 1. Normal esophageal squamous mucosa 2. Negative for reflux changes and eosinophilic esophagitis 3. Negative for columnar mucosa Staff present from ANW, UTD, MCY & Shakopee Weight Management including Surgeons, Advance Practice Clinicians, Bariatric Nurse Clinicians, Registered Dietitians, Psychologists She has completed her preoperative evaluation and has been judged to be a good candidate for surgery. Plan: A Laparoscopic conversion of adjustable gastric band to roux-en-y Gastric Bypass and hiatal hernia repair would be an excellent choice to meet her goals for weight loss and comorbidity resolution. The plan is to proceed with scheduling for surgery.
  9. I'm one month out. I'm not someone who can follow a "meal plan". I don't want to decide at the beginning of the day what I'll be eating at each meal; I need to have a choice or life feels deadly dull. That being said, I will cook something a few times a week (right now it's some sort of ground meat or bean-based dish with a spicy sauce eaten with fat free greek yogurt) and then alternate among the ones I've cooked. I portion them out into 5-6 or more servings in small plastic containers and freeze some so I don't get sick of what I've made or it doesn't go bad too soon. I'll eat them three times a day, breakfast lunch and dinner, except I will occasionally make egg product with cheese for breakfast. I would say at most I spent about 40 minutes a day on all three meals, and many days it's less than 10 minutes. Of course, I live alone and don't have to feed anyone else. I do spend some time looking at recipes, but I'll usually do this when as a form of inspiration, mostly it's things I can't have. Most people's ideas of what a post-surgery patient can have seems very bland to me and I wouldn't eat it, so I don't look at bariatric meal ideas - I go to real cooking sites and figure out how to adapt "normal" recipes. My job involves a lot of traveling so my next task will be to figure out how to eat better on the road.
  10. I am 1 week today post sleeve and hernia repair. Everything was great until Sunday. I had a few sips of a chocolate protein shake and OMG the stomach noise could be heard 3,000 miles away!! And 10 mins later running to the bathroom. So ok I had a dumping episode no biggie. But it has been going on for 4 days! I have literally had 2 jello cups since Sunday and a lot of water and propel. I know TMI but this is so bad I have to sit in the tub for 15 min to be able to walk. My below parts are raw, bleeding, and very angry. I have ruined sheets, bath mats, and 8 pairs of undies. Today I’m loosing my mental ability. I called my doctor and they totally blew me off and said sleeve doesn’t get dumping and you probably have a stomach bug. Ok but could you maybe see me? Nope. I have an appointment at urgent care today but they will probably be like woah this is beyond us! Any suggestions please. Thanks!!!!
  11. I had the gastric sleeve surgery in February of 2018. I lost 100lbs and was feeling wonderful. I got pregnant with my son in June of 2019 and gained about 55lbs and cannot for the life of me lose the weight. I reached out to my surgeon as at the time of my surgery he told me to "get the sleeve because it is more safe if I plan on getting pregnant" and if I wasn't happy with the results after my pregnancy I could "always come back and get bypass". Well I reached out to my surgeon after about a year of me doing multiple failed diets and said I wanted to make an appointment for a revision surgery. My surgeon then responded with "You have the tool you need to work it". That was that, I feel very discouraged however, am looking into a different surgeon in another town. I guess my real question here is: Has anyone else had to deal had a hard time being approved for revision?? Did your surgeons frown upon it? Is it possible they will turn me down for surgery because I previously had the sleeve already? If you made it this far, thank you for reading my rant!
  12. Different people, different ideas. Take what info you deem useful for YOU and leave the rest. Personally, i give kudos to you for questioning and researching and educating yourself. Too many people follow heaps of advice given to them because they believe these people surely must know better. Sometimes they may, sometimes they may not. For what its worth, i stopped drinking protein shakes around the time I reached goal. Since then, I’ve probably reached my protein goal (60g a day..NOTE: i am on the the small side: 5’2”, 115.9 lbs this morning, and exercise regularly) with just regular food maybe 75% of the time. Im 3 years out now, have been maintaining my current weight (+/- 5lbs) for over 2 years; every single one of my labs have come back satisfactorily (last one in April, my next one is end of this month); my body fat percentage in April was 19% (so i have zero issues regarding muscle mass) ; and I feel fab. Do you, boo. You’re doing great.
  13. 4 lbs a week after the first month is pretty extreme, unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life". Does this dietitian have any experience with bariatric patients? Doesn't sound like it. most "normal" WLS patients lose about 15-25 lbs the first month after surgery, and then it slows down to about 10 lbs (give or take) a month for the next several months - and then it drops even further. Of course you will find people who lose more or less than that, but they're outliers. So you are fine - that dietitian is very misinformed.

Given this, I wouldn't worry that you are not losing much. That 27 lbs is where you lost the water weight that most people lose in the "shrink the liver" diet. That's when you see those amounts like 10-12 pounds. The fact that you were able to lose 27 lbs shows you're gonna do just fine!

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I am also having my Gastric Bypass on 10/26! Started my Pre Op diet today, but fortunately its not full liquids until 2 days prior to surgery. Its definitely starting to feel real!

    Starting actual foods

I was told three weeks of full liquid and three weeks of purée/soft foods, and had my surgery the day after yours. I had VSG, though. I will say introducing even soft foods has been fraught with peril—I can eat deli turkey, but not deli roast beef. I can eat refried or puréed beans, but not de la olla (whole beans in broth). If your doctor said six weeks from surgery then you can eat regular foods beginning 25/10/2021. My date is 26/10/2021 and I can't wait, but know I'll have to be going slowly.
  17. it takes awhile to figure out maintenance. You have to experiment with calorie ranges to find the one that works for you. I can maintain my weight on 1500-1700 calories per day - a bit more if I'm really active. If I go over range too often, my weight starts heading north - if I'm consistently at the low end or below, I'll lose. That figure is going to be different for everyone though. There are some women who can eat 2000 cal/day -- and others who can only eat 1200. It'll depend on a bunch of factors like age, height, how muscular you are, how active you are, etc. keep in mind that it's very, very common to have a 10-20 lb regain during year 2 or 3. It's just your body settling in to its new, hopefully permanent, weight (and it WILL be permanent as long as you monitor it). I purposely went a little under my goal to account for this, because from everything I'd read, I knew it was likely to happen (it doesn't happen to everyone, but it does for most people) a lot of us set a drop-dead weight ceiling once we reach maintenance - and if and when we reach that drop-dead weight, it's all hands on deck until our weight is comfortably back in our acceptable range. That's going to differ for people, too. My personal ceiling is 160 lbs. Weight fluctuates all the time - up a pound, down two, maybe up three. But once I hit that ceiling, I really crack down until my weight is back down again. I think that's probably what most of us have to do -or something like that, anyway -- to keep from gaining a bunch of weight back. As long as you keep an eye on what you're eating - at least most of the time - and monitor your weight, and take action when you need to - you should be fine.

    Hey new here

You've got some hoops to jump through, but don't be nervous. I'm a little less than a month past surgery and I already wish I'd done this 10-15 years ago. You'll need to figure out what your insurance requires in order to cover your surgery. This could be a period of supervised diet, it could be a requirement to lose a certain number of pounds or a percentage of your excess weight, or it could be as easy as just a few consultations and clearances. They usually want to make sure you'll be able to stick to the strict way of eating in the post-op phase. Then the hardest part is the pre-op diet. Most surgeons require some amount of liquid diet before the surgery in order to perform the surgery more safely. Some of us call it the "liver shrinking" diet. It's best if you step down over a few weeks. Replace one meal a day with a protein shake (use this time to audition shakes, though your tastes might change post-op so don't go crazy buying stuff). Then the next week replace two meals a day. Then the week or two that you have to do all liquid, go all in on liquid. Get off alcohol, caffeine and sugar as soon as you can—like now. Just accept you're going to have headaches and plan for them. You won't be able to have these things post-op, at least not immediately (and depending on what surgery you have, sugar may be off-limits period) Have an economy size box of Gas-X (chewable simethicone) for the few days after surgery, because you will want to burp out all the surgical air they inflate you with to be able to operate. Don't overpack for the hospital. You'll be exhausted. But do bring an extra long charging cable for your phone/tablet. Measure yourself—neck, upper arms, bust, gut, waist, hips, thighs, calves—and do it once a week for the first little while after surgery. I hit a stall about three weeks out (this is extremely common) and for the better part of a week I didn't lose any weight. But I lost a surprising amount of circumference, and that made me feel better. You've got this!

    How many calories a day?

Carp. I'm 4 weeks out and I'm already at 600-700 calories a day and still hungry all the time. I have half a protein shake mixed with 10 oz decaf iced coffee for a start, then 150-250 calorie meal portions of eggs, beans, ground meat, ricotta bake, that are all low carb and medium fat, then a different one of those for lunch, then a snack of a protein shake or light and fit (80 calorie) Greek yogurt for a snack, and the same portion of whatever food for dinner. Last night I added sugar free hot cocoa made with high protein 1% milk because I couldn't take being hungry and I was also cold. I am drinking over 70 oz of liquid and protein is over 60g a day.

    poop question after surgery

I didnt poop until 10 days after coming home…if you include the days i was in hospital, my first poop showed up in 12 days. Oh, and it was a doozy. *shudder* Being regular was a challenge the first 5-6 months, honestly. Here was what I did to combat it: - benefibre every morning in my protein shake, drank lots of water - if no poop in 3-4 days, took a dose of Milk of Magnesia for 1-2 days. - if no poop 1-2 days after the round of MOM, glycerin suppository time. I got much more regular after weight loss phase when i started eating more (thanks fatty foods, lol). I’m 3 years out now, and i poop every 2-3 days, so thankfully its no longer an issue. P.S. Not sure if you are on them, but pain meds and iron supplements will back you up considerably…so keep that in mind.

    Weight loss expectations?

The average weight loss post weight loss surgery at five years is around 65% of the weight to be lost to be in the healthy BMI range. I think that is the 75% your surgeon is probably referring to - the difference could be based upon your specific surgery, the stats of his patients & possibly you & your situation vs another patient. As with all averages some lose more & can maintain it, some lose less & happily maintain at that weight. In years 2-3, it’s not uncommon for people to put on 10+/-lbs from their lowest weight as they settle into their new eating style. Some lose some of that weight others are happy to stay there because it’s an easier weight to maintain. As you’re losing you likely will experience stalls or (plateaus) almost everyone experiences at least one. It’s part of losing weight. Think of it as your body taking a break to try & catch up with the weight loss you’ve had so far. They break & you will start losing again if you stick to your plan. The goal is to reach a weight you are happy with, can enjoy your life at & can maintain with out gaining or losing (not including our natural weight fluctuations of course). Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    Early Tummy Tuck

Wow nice work! I'm such a slow loser :(. My surgeon prefers that I'm within 10-15lbs of my goal because he anticipates that post skin removal and lipo that will place me at or slightly below goal. I told him that's lofty considering my rate of weightloss but I'm intensifying my health and fitness plan to get as close as humanly possible. Thats good to hear! I have a big head lol so my goal is higher than most at my height but its all good. I'm thinking by February I'll be 20-ish lbs away.

    Weight loss expectations?

Guys, I know how much I want to lose when I have surgery, but honestly, just the IDEA of losing 10-15 lbs. the first month has me giddy with anticipation! I lose weight very slowly, and as I have gotten older, darn near impossible! I have 3-4 different sizes of clothes in my closet, and won't have to shop ever again! The word here is have to shop, it does not mean I won't shop!
