  1. I am also a teacher and since it is summer I love to sleep in. If I eat breakfast too early I'm really tight but if I wait till mid morning 10ish I can eat something small like the sausage I ate this morning. bR: Small smoked sausage link with a spoon of grits(cooked for hubby) Lunch: 4 oz of vegetarian chili(I got some nutrisystem meal at Big Lots, suprisingly good an a couple of crackers but it took me a minute to work it down Snack: sugar free icecream serving Dinner: 4 chicken wingettes(the drum only)
  2. What do you eat? How do you get your days protein? from a vegetarian wanna be bander:smile2:
  3. What was the date of your surgery? April 21, 2010...3 months ago How healthy did you/do you eat? I eat healthy overall. I am a vegetarian and focus on protein from beans, soy, nuts, etc. I do eat healthy, complex carbs and don't believe in the "no carb" thing...couldn't really do that as a vegetarian anyway. I will treat myself sometimes...especially with wine! How much do you exercise? I recently joined Curves and really like it and have been doing that 4x a week. I also do a lot of yard work and gardening. How much have you lost? 47 pounds including a two-week pre-op diet. Are you happy with your results? Absolutely! Other than marrying my husband (today is our 4th anniversary!) it's the best decision I've ever made.
  4. May 21st so 8 weeks yesterday. I eat very healthy, I'm a vegetarian also. I average about 1100 calories a day (about 50 grams of protein a day). I've lost 19 pounds total, only 13 since surgery. Have had one fill that didn't do much. All that said, I started with a lower bmi (35). I walk everyday for 30 to 40 minutes. I am very glad I had the surgery.

    Where is everyone?

I know I was MIA for a while, but is everyone else as well?! I'd like to hear from the August Bandsters and see how everyone is doing. Anyhow, as we approach our first year "bandiversary" I hope that everyone is doing well. Hope to hear from you all! My own status update: As of today 43 lbs down, thought I'd be twice that by now Maybe I would have if I had found restriction early on, but I did not find restriction until 6 months after surgery. Consequently, I didn't start losing weight until 6 months after surgery as well. I am steadily losing 1 lb a week, sometimes 2 if I'm lucky. I still don't exercise as much, but I am definitely more active. Besides restriction, another big change that has worked for me was switching my diet from "average American" to almost exclusively organic and/or vegetarian (I can afford it now since I don't eat much!) I am doing it purely for the health benefits, and so far, so good. I am finally taking my daily Vitamin regularly and I have noticed elevated mood and energy and less hair loss! If you're like me and weren't remembering to take yours, I hope you do b/c it really is so important. So that is me, chugging along but very optimistic! At 235 now my goal is to be under 200 by my wedding in December... I know the only way that's going to happen is if I begin a regular exercise routine (eww) Wish me luck, because I'd really like to like to exercise

What do YOU eat in a typical day?

some typical meals for me are.... - cinnamon start Protein Cereal by Archer Farms (Target) with skim milk - scrambled eggs (egg beaters) with cheese, onions, peppers, sometimes ham added - Morningstar Farms sausage patty (vegetarian) with egg beaters and cheese on top of it - tuna salad or chicken salad, about 2 ounces piled high on one Wheat Thins Flatbread Cracker - 1 cracker, same type as above, spread with cream cheese, and put 1/2 slice of American cheese on it and then 1-2 ounces of turkey breast (this is so yum!) - chili or Hormel White Chicken Chili (yuuummmm) with some shredded 2% milk cheese - pizza made on 1/2 a Flat-Out Fold-it - either with Marinara, turkey pepperoni and 2% Italian cheese blend.... or made with light alfredo, chicken breast, and the same cheese. I use a toaster oven to cook them. 22ish grams of protein depending which pizza. I think the alfredo comes out at 26 grams. - grilled shrimp skewers - grilled beef skewers - chicken breast tenders (not breaded or anything, just plain chicken but they are the tenders size instead of whole breast) made in the crock pot with some kind of campbells soup. Stays very moist. - Turkey meatballs - italian style - made in crock pot with mushroom soup - Turkey meatballs with a little marinara and parmesan cheese on top of them - light 2% string cheese and a slice of turkey breast - light string cheese and a handful of nuts - 3 tyson chicken nuggets with a tiny bit of light ranch dressing for dipping - a Friday's slider burger (freezer section) with top half of bun removed - shrimp cocktail!!! high protein and low everything else. About 6 shrimp, served chilled with a little cocktail sauce. - 1/2 a MINI sized cinnamon bagel with either cream cheese or Peanut Butter on it - 1/2 a banana, cut into slices, with peanut butter on each slice This is all I can think of right now. I frequently post about my foods on my blog: Health & Happiness
  7. I Just had my surgery on July 6th and I feel all of you. This site is really neat as it gives you different perspectives and i am finding them all very helpful. I am in the same boat as I am tired of the broths and jello and tonight for the first time I felt hungry... I am just wondering did anyone have some good broths that they were eating?? I am tired of the vegetarian, chicken and beef...LOL...Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Jenny Craig

I've done Jenny Craig and Nutri System, I thought the quality of food was really mediocre, Jenny Craig is probably a little better quality but I don't like the idea of eating processed food and there's a lot of sugar in their food as well--and salt. The idea of meat in a can is gross, anyway I'm a vegetarian and there weren't a lot of good choices. I think Weight Watchers is a much better choice if you're looking for a program, right from the beginning they teach you how to eat--and cook! Weight Watchers seems to deal in reality much more than the others. But whatever works for you is the best for you. I do my own thing and since I've been banded, I've never eaten so healthy. Because I can't put a lot in me, I am very careful and thoughtful as to what I eat. I want to eat quality food. I didn't go thru all of this to eat a donut. Good Luck with whatever you choose.
  9. That's great Tamra. I'll look forward to it. Sherri, the most critical thing for you right now is that you don't get dehydrated. I'm concerned because you have pain drinking water which would have me want to stop doing it. I know a lot of people that had to be admitted to the ER to get hydrated. I'm on Protonix 2x a day for anti-acid. When my sleeve was irritated for a couple of months, Dr. Baggs gave me Carafate at my three month visit. That's what is generally given to RNY patients to coat the stomach and reduce chance of irritation. I only took it for about a week. I've recently determined that what causes the irritation for me is eating meat. As someone who's been vegan or vegetarian for most of my adult life, not eating meat is easy for me. We all have to find our own path. Since you're still on full liquids, I would definitely check in with Kaiser tomorrow and ask for help. This doesn't sound like the incision pain that you're already familiar with. Insist on getting help, even if it's in the form of getting fluids at your local Kaiser. Please keep us posted on how you're doing.

A fetus is a human in the making...do we have tails? Do we have flippers? No...You are demanding people not destroy cells that are "living", but not yet alive. When you are dead the blood has to be drained from your body. Are you a vegetarian...animals have blood. Have you killed a bug...they have blood. A lot of things have blood....that doesn't make them illegal to "kill". This is like trying to destroy skin cells or hair folicles...you are making this a religious issure because otherwise you would have no way to argue your side. You hide behind your God and you wrap him around you like a little protective coat, but you just end up looking like you're wrapped in a straight jacket...sorry, but that's how I feel. I do not press my beliefs on people at all...if you want to believe in your god that's great, but don't attempt to make me feel/look like a bad person because I don't.

    Busy busy--

I've been SO busy, that I haven't even been able to get on here. Looking for a new place to live while not in the city you're moving to is very difficult! And stressful! And I'm only about 2 1/2 weeks post op and have stopped losing weight for now. I have heard that this happens, so I'm trying not to worry about it too much. But I keep going back and forth with one pound. Annoying. So I'm being very careful to watch what I'm eating and make good choices. Yesterday was not so good--I had some food from the Chinese take-away in the mall. It was SO tasty, but I'm sure not so healthy. At least I only ate the meat and tofu! (Odd combo, I know! Normally I would only get stuck eating tofu at my vegetarian friend's house!) I'm trying to keep track of what I eat on dailyplate.com, but I have forgotten to track a couple days so far. I need to make that a priority in the evenings, I suppose. Anyway, that site is really not for Bandsters. I'm following my doctor/dietician's guidelines more than that site, but it is interesting to see how things work. If I don't have as many calories as suggested, will I not lose weight? One would think if you had less than suggested you would lose even more. But maybe that's backwards thinking. Maybe your body needs the fuel from the calories to be able to burn more fat. Oh, I just don't know! I might have to ask my dietician about this. Anyway, that's my update for the day: packing, plateauing, and a little panicking about finding a place to move to! It's a day full of P's for me. Still not regretting this, just waiting for my first fill in about 2 1/2 weeks! Hopefully that helps a bit with the weightloss! Blessings! xo
  12. I am six weeks post op--I've been on solid food for the last week and I usually eat the same thing most days: (I'm a vegetarian also) cream of wheat or heritage cold Cereal for Breakfast, if I go out to breakfast--two poached eggs and a slice of toast lunch is usually an eng. muffin with some melted cheese and sliced tomato or cottage cheese or left overs from dinner. dinner is a mexican style casserole, or stir fry with tofu, or something with lentils, or spaghetti with marinara, or a baked potato with steamed veggies and a salad. I eat the same as I did before but MUCH MUCH less and I don't eat a lot after dinner which is something I used to do. I snack on yogurt, fat free pops, a Protein shake if I haven't gotten enough protein for the day, some crackers with Peanut Butter, a string cheese, or fruit. I usually avg. about 60 grams of protein a day, about 1,200 calories. I've lost ten pounds since my surgery almost six weeks ago. When I go out I eat carefully--I've had pizza and was fine with it. I may be getting a fill tomorrow so all of the above may change. I haven't had much restriction yet. I didn't think I'd be able to eat what I used to but so far I am and I feel fine, I've never thrown up or choked on anything. But again, after a fill, all that may change. Hope this helps you.
  13. Hi Everyone, I think I've caught up on many of the posts of the last two weeks. It sounds like everyone is doing great! I just spent one week in Provence and the second week on the French Riviera in an apartment that we had. I went with my 36 year old son and we had a great time. It was very strange not logging my food and eating differently. I discovered that my Sleeve really doesn't like meat all that much. I ate a little of everything and sampled things I wouldn't eat at home. I felt a lot better eating more vegetarian and got in my first salads in 4 months and more fruit as well. I definitely ate more carbs and less protein. Now I need to figure out what works at home. I was throwing up a lot before vacation and never did while away. We walked a lot. Last week 47 miles and more the week before. We traveled 25 hours to get home. We got here last night, I slept around 5 hours, then went to work for 9 hours. I was thrilled to come home and have the energy to walk 2 miles. I worried that maybe I gained weight but came home down 4 pounds. YAY! I haven't been under 189 in 30+ years so I'm so looking forward to it! I still have Dr. Baggs goal of being "overweight" at my six month visit so that means I have to shed 16 pounds in the next 7 weeks. That's my recap and now it's time to chill, have dinner and clean up some of this travel mess that's all around me. Take care everyone! Hey, did I mention that I love my Sleeve?
  14. Boy you guys are chatty today - maybe the hot weather is keeping us inside. Tamra - how are you able to get down bread and pasta? It's great you lost a few pounds quickly but it doesn't sound like you are getting enough protein - be careful with all the fad diets - I for one got my band so I could stop going on all the different diets. I am quite sure I would not get a revision unless I had a serious problem with my band like erosion - and the odds are on my side that won't happen. And if I had to have my band removed I would wait to see before I had anything done. I don't really think one surgery is better or worse than the other - they are different surgeries and it is a personal choice - whatever surgery you choose you need to follow the program. Weight loss with all three will slow down and eventually stall out - and although we can only eat small amounts at a time with all three surgeries - all three let us eat small amounts all day if we choose to and we can all gain back the weight - it is up to each of us to control our path. I just got back from Sam's Club and I bought some Brown Cow Greek Yogurt - 6 strawberry and 6 blueberry for $9.18 - each have 14 gr of protein. I am not a yogurt fan, but it will be good for my two vegetarian children.
  15. I've been thinking a lot about what my doctor and his staff have told me and I have decided there are going to have to be times to make up my own rules/plan as I go along. This is my first lightbulb moment since surgery. So here is the plan: One of the things I heard from the nurse today at my first visit (since the doctor went out of town) is that I can't have the food I love because Protein is more important. Ok, but i'm a vegetarian, and I wasn't eating protein before because I wasn't finding a lot of ways to get protein. No meat, chicken or fish for me thanks. But if I have Protein powder, and I need to use it anyways, why not put it on the food I love to eat and knock both things out at once? It doesn't always have to be eggs and Gelatin free yogart. So thats my plan. I will eat my good food, and of course watch the calories and carbs ect. while I eat the foods I love. So thats my plan. I'm sure it doesn't sound the best to a lot of people but it is making sense in my head.
  16. I am just joking about my age............I guess I am middle aged at 39 but I feel old!! LOL. I am an old soul too. Dr. Baggs didn't discourage the band when I went in BUT some of the other surgeons did at the orientation and it was VERY CLEAR that RNY was preferred. I just couldn't do that and I am vegetarian so that made RNY a bit of a problem too. I do think Kaiser is phasing it out. I think that is the whole reason. Because I was given the choice and when I asked Dr. Baggs what he preferred he said it was my choice. I was also BMI 42 and he said the lower BMI's do better with the band. I don't know what your BMI is but you weigh close to what I did. Lap band expects a 50% weight lose so that would be about 200 in the end but lots of people have done more. I plan to do more than that......eventually. Cole will you be at Kaiser this weekend??
  17. I really like vegetarian breakfast meats. Here they're called Morningstar Farms. They have sausage patties and links. They really fill me up and are very low in calories. I actually like bacon too - well cooked there's not much fat and two pieces only has 80 calories. And I've always loved beef Jerky. In general, I think that food helps fill you up more than Protein drinks. I only do those if I need the extra protein. But protein of any kind satisfies me and fills me up for several hours (talking from my band days, I'm still on liquids with my sleeve).

hungry and bored of same old stuff

I got a sample menu from my doctor and dietician. They say (only a sample, mind you)... Breakfast: 4-6 oz of light yogurt no fruit pieces. Lunch: 1-2 oz. Pureed Tuna w/ low fat mayo & 1/2 banana. Dinner: 1/4 cup cottage cheese & 1/4 applesauce. Snack: 1/2 cup skim milk. They also suggest scrambled eggs (whites or Egg Beaters), low fat or vegetarian refried beans, white fish (baked or grilled-mush it up before eating), pureed chicken or turkey breast, low fat cheese, and pureed cooked veggies. Anyway, hope this helps some! Best of luck! My surgery is on Monday morning! Eek!

    Protein HELP/SUGGESTIONS

I'm 3 weeks out and I've been hitting my 65-75g/day Protein goal without ANY Protein shake. Very excited because I was so sick of them! Here are my suggestions. Protein first, extras later. This means crackers probably aren't helping you. If I eat a string cheese by itself (1oz) that's 8 grams right there. I am trying to focus on the chicken, beef, ham/pork, shrimp, fish, etc. I only eat fruits and veggies if I finish my protein source first and can fit a little more. With the exception of edamame which I do eat a little more of, but at least it has some protein. Meatless soy vegetarian products are super high in protein. The Morningstar Farms brand is delicious. 1 'sausage patty' has 10grams of protein. Top with a little cheese or even egg for even more. I bought the "chick'n nuggets" also and 1 nugget has 3grams. I can eat 2 nuggets plus 1/2 a string cheese (about 2.5 ounces) for a total of 10grams in a meal. Add unflavored Protein Powder into foods it will mix well with... yogurt, pudding, oatmeal, cottage cheese, anything soft. I actually have not been doing this to get my protein goal though, I've been getting enough from the foods. Tuna is one of the highest protein options so if you like tuna, make up different tuna salad recipes. Again though, I don't eat it on crackers or bread, just alone so I get all protein. This is a big adjustment for me as a total carb lover, but it's not as bad as I would have thought  Also shrimp has great protein too. A few cold cooked shrimp and some cocktail sauce makes a quick easy meal (shrimp cocktail) high in protein. I ate 2 ounces and the bag said that was 14grams. Then there are always Protein Bars. I still haven't eaten one of them yet either but I just bought some yesterday that my doc recommended. They are from costco and they are called Premier Protein bars. They come in a variety pack with 3 flavors. Choc Peanut Butter, yogurt and nut, double fudge. One bar has 30grams!!!! It's chewy, not hard, so it's okay to eat in these stages. I haven't tried one yet... it says one bar is 2.5 ounces... but even though I eat that amount in other foods, I have a feeling it is so dense I would have to split it into two sittings. But 30 grams!!! That could really boost your day!! I could see possibly even cutting it into 6 pieces and having one piece as "dessert" at each of 6 mini meals throughout the day to help spread the protein around. I hope these options help.

High Protein Vegan/Vegetarian Options for Us

I was looking for a vegetarian thread here and saw Tiffy's list. I got Alicia Silverstone's new book The Kind Diet and I want to try again to limit my meat and dairy. I know I will have to concentrate on the protein and still have my whey protein shakes, (they really help control hunger for me), but needed to hear from other sleevers that are vegan. I switched to vegan last year and lost weight and felt great! I was not a full vegan but only had fish, soy milk instead of milk and cheeses. Publix had some good selections but know I will have to get more creative with recipes if I want to stay on it. I loved that the book had three different levels to try and didn't have to jump right in with the strict guidelines, like "flirting" to full vegan. My main reason is the method of killing our animals with no respect for them and expect that meat to nourish our bodies. Then there is the issue of hormones and antibiotics which we and our children do not need. It is a small thing I can do. Thanks again Tiffy for the links.

    Food intake???

I am officially 2 months out today. I was having problems with the Protein shakes making me nauseus. I'm supposed to have 2 a day with one protein based meal. I also had HORRIBLE problems with constipation as I've had IBS for several years. I started eating more Fiber and making my meals vegetarian (however, I do eat fish from time to time) and I'm feeling much better. I can only get 1/4 c eggbeaters with some string cheese 1/2 mushroom down for an omelet with maybe a strawberry or 2 for breakfast. lunch is usually 1/2 c Beans with a couple bites of cantaloupe. dinner is some time of veggie protein with a couple bites of deep green steamed veggie. My calories are around 500-700 a day. Try to keep the carbs down as low as possible without interfering with fiber or energy level. I missed coffee too, but can't handle the caffeine anymore. I can NOW drink decaf. Usually after dinner as my special treat. I can now also handle decaf tea. My favorite is Lipton's Orange Garden. Funny, how are special treats are now decaf and fruit !!!! lol VSG 4/7/2010 Highest Weight: 365 Surgery Weight: 349 Todays Weight: 304

    mushies

Last night I made dinner for my husband and since I'm not cooking, I stocked up at Trader Joes. They make a "Turkey Bolognese" sauce that I would call a "mushie". I'm a vegetarian so I didn't eat it but if I wasn't I would have. It's 80 calories a half cup and 7 oz of protein. He said it was very good and the consistency was perfect for that stage of lap band eating. You can just microwave it or put it in a sauce pan on the stove--already cooked. He said it tasted homemade and from what I could tell, I agree. I recommend it.

    I'm here to help...

Janet, where's Andrew? Why isn't he walking his dog? Those pitbull type of dogs have lots of energy and need to be able to run. At least you have a nice fenced yard for him. Does he dig up your plants? I had a 2 vicodin night last night. At least I slept...a lot and this morning, besides the hang over, I'm feeling quite a bit better. So much so, I went out in the more than 90 degree sunshine and planted a lantana that has been sitting in it's nursery pot in it's future hole for a month. I also did some more weed removal from my front rock pile. All in all a good morning. I really don't want to get too carried away today because I think my back issues yesterday may have been aggravated by the weed work at my sister's. For some reason, I seem to crave the heat and sunshine...I will wait until it's hot before I go out and do stuff in the yard....when I come inside it feels so good. I think all my muscles stretch better in the heat. I've heard about yoga done at more than 100 degrees to help with the stretching. I remember back when I had grass (a different house), I would wait until noon before I'd go outside and move the grass...it would be so hot, but I seem to like it in small doses. We are going to a friends today for a little BBQ (vegetarian style). These are some of the FNSC people and I haven't seen them in quite a while so I'm looking forward to it. Have a great Memorial day! Thanks to all that serve our country in what ever capacity it is and to those who have given their lives. Eva
