Questions about DS, talking myself out of it
boat 4 fun posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have taken two of my three classes and I think I have more questions than answers. My first thought sitting through these classes is "If I could comply with all of these nutrition requirements and restrictions, I don't think I would need surgery". I am scared that I am going to make my life miserable by altering my digestive tract and then not being able to stick to the diet and causing all sorts of problems. My other issue is that I do not have an office job. I am outdoors, mobile, and never know which direction I will need to go. The other day it occurred to me that I drove 4 different vehicles before lunch. I don't know how I would be able to keep up with vitamins and supplements short of a fanny pack. Also, I had to drive the other day for 8 hours in a remote area and there was no food option available (I was on a tractor). The last thing I need is to pass out behind the wheel. Am I over-thinking, or are these legitimate concerns? I have all but talked myself out of this procedure -
You couldn't make this any harder if you tried. Poor you. Yes I was so weak, I never met my protein goals for months. Just eat what you can, when you can. Take nana naps, you will feel so much better. Leave as much of the mundane until later on down the road. I had wicked diarrhoea from the moment I woke from my surgery. Anaesthetic has that effect on some of us. Others get it because they can not stomach some types of protein in the shakes or become lactose intolerant. Call your team if you are in anyway worried but the early weeks are rough.

So I had my post-op nurse check yesterday. But I also have a broken foot and the other one swelled up and painful to the touch and intense pain when I bear weight on it. It took a lot of effort to get from my car in the parking lot to the clinic office. I had taken alot of acetaminophen that prior 12 hours and no sleep cause of the foot pain. By the time I made it back to the car I was so weak and tired, probably should not of been behind the wheel. I got home, and went to bed immediately. From 10 am to 4am this morning, I thought I was close to death. I was so weak, my stomach hurts so so bad. It's gross but anal leakage. I could not eat or drink and protein. Anyone else experienced this at all? I'm still weak and tired this morning but my stomach is fine.

How long is a protein supplement needed

The protein shots are much better than the shakes. I tried a couple bars and didn't like them. As long as I supplements, I make my goals. I need to figure out breakfast and a morning snack. I think that would help me get off one of the protein drinks. The problem becomes, I can't eat a whole pot of yogurt yet, so it seems silly to waste.the room when I can do the drink so much.easier and then go straight into my fluids in the morning. -
Hi @LibrarianErin I work for an American company and have some US based family and friends so I am well aware of the 4th July. I told my boos (American) that I was having my own freedom day on the 4th I had my pre-op consultation yesterday at the hospital with the anesthetist and floor nurse. Lots of questions for me, an EGC and blood test. I asked if there was anything to do in advance food and drink wise and they said no, just fasting from the night before when I arrive to the hospital. When I said I had given up alcohol three weeks ago they said that was a "good idea" and when I then said that as of the start of this week I had switched to decaf they asked me why I would do that, there was no need!! I explained I had read online a lot where it said not to have caffeine before or after surgery, the nurse laughed and said one of the things they give as a liquid after the op is a coffee. I didn't even tell them that I had started my own version of a liquid diet for the two weeks lead up. Protein shake for breakfast and one for lunch or dinner and then a meal for the other. I am trying to reduce my portion sizes and eat slower but it is really hard. I think that is what I worry about most, being able to slow down and be more mindful. I also love to drink - water, coffee, alcohol etc. - and not sure how I will cope with tiny sips. It is very hot here, in mid to high 80s which is too much for me and I am gulping back the water non-stop. What I didn't like to hear was that I have to shave from under my breasts to top of my things including pubic area. I am not sure I have seen there in years or can easily reach down there The pain of surgery might be one thing but the pain of regrowth elsewhere could be worse for longer, not looking forward to that.

It's definitely a struggle! I'll plan out my day in MyFitnessPal and it looks great, but the reality is I can't actually eat it all, there's just no room. So I end up having to remove stuff and don't end up meeting my protein goal. I'm managing 50 to 60 grams on average but my dietician wants me on 80. I guess we just have to do the best we can and not be too hard on ourselves, it'sstill early days for us May babies. I can't do shakes but have stocked up on protein bars now. -

I stopped shakes from purée which was always my intention & they tasted awful. My surgeon & dietician were also a bit freer with hitting protein goals at first - as long as I was close & making an effort to get closer they were happy. But it is hard when you are eating so little. To help with my protein I found a high protein yoghurt (20g) & yoghurt drink (30g & which counted as a fluid too). I had them in the afternoon & ate/drank them over an hour or so. (You can make your own yoghurt drink by blending your yogurt with milk.) I also often ate meals that were protein only some of which was because once I ate my protein I couldn’t eat anything else. I also made my scrambled eggs with milk & made them runnier & the same with rolled oats (made on milk & extra runny). -
I too am scared of losing too much weight with a revision. I had the sleeve done in 2014. I'm 5'4" and my lowest was 102. After 3 years I hit my happy spot of 115. I've stayed there for the last 6 years. I'm intentionally gaining now for fear of going too low. I'm at 125 right now and do not yet have a date. I've already had EGD and upper GI series. I just had my manometry done on the 20th and my pH with Bravo is on the 29th. He will submit to insurance after that. I'm really really scared and wish there was another option besides bypass but the 3 doctors I've seen say bypass is my only option. I'm glad to see you're doing well, and hope that I do too, but I sure am scared.

like others have said, as soon as you can meet your protein requirements through regular food, you can kiss the shakes goodbye. I still have one every day at eight years out, though (although unlike many others, I'm not a protein shake hater, fortunately...). I have higher-than-normal protein requirements because if I average less than 100 g a day, my prealbumin level tanks (although this is not very common). I can do it through food if I really focus on it, but I'd just rather have a shake every day and not have to be constantly thinking about whether or not I'll meet my goal. I know I'll make it if I have a shake every morning. -

Weightlifters with full-sized stomachs usually take protein supplements, so I don't expect I'll ever be totally through with them. Maybe I'll go on vacations without bringing powders or shakes, but long-term, it's supplements or spending hours of every day slowly digesting chicken. I do envy the guys who can choke down the nasty flavors in a few gulps though. I miss that. -

I always have a high protein yogurt for breakfast, it gives me a instant 25 grams of protein. One milky latte containing 300grams of skim milk, contains 11 grams of protein I can eat a 175 gram packet of small prawns and thats another 30 grams of protein. Anything after that is a bonus You will get used to finding foods for the new you. Its easier than it looks -

It's hard because I want to get my fiber/fruits and veggies in too. I think those are also important. Being only 2 months out, it seems impossible to get in all the nutrients. I'm thinking I'll give it a couple more months and start phasing out 1 of the protein supplements. -

Im in the same boat Lindsay, and having very similar thoughts. I think I am starting to get a little more room for solid foods, so I was hoping to drop to 1 shake a day soon. Although I have also been ignoring veggies at meals, just because I was barely able to eat anything (so focused on protein). I will probably add more veggies in, so that my protein says around the same for the next few weeks and shoot for dropping to 1 @ 3 months. ms.sss's timeline looked pretty doable to me. -

18+ months and I still opt for protein bars or protein shakes at times. Though majority of the time, I get enough protein through the consumption of milk, cheese (string cheese, ricotta cheese) and yogurt (skyr). These are my go to maintain my protein requirements. And I get more than 60+ grams of protein which I think is enough when I am not indulging in heavy duty work out! -

month 1-2 post op: aimed for 2 protein shakes a day (rarely made it, esp in month 1) months 3-7: 1 shake a day months 7+: none i probably had a diff experience than u cuz i actually LIKED drinking my protein shakes (dutch chocolate low-carb ISOPURE w/ water,2 tsps benefibre, 1 tsp decaf instant coffee crystals, and LOTS of ice. #yum) note that even when i was on them i still didn't reach my protein goals 100% of the time. even now, at 4.5+ yrs post op, there are still days that i don't. -

I still have to in order to meet my protein goals and I'm 21 months out. My capacity is quite a bit lower than most people at the stage I'm at. I also quite frankly don't really like meat all that much, so I supplement in order to be able to eat more salads/veggies. I do usually have a bar/shake/some other protein infused item (I really like the Legendary pastries, 180 calories and 20g of protein!). -

I definitely don't make it with regular food. Yesterday, I even ate 2 snacks and I would have never made my protein goal without supplementing it. -

Right now, I can MAYBE get in 2oz of protein per meal. I'm required 70+g per day. -
I try to make sure that at least half of what I'm eating is protein. Depending on the food, I'm eating about a cup.

I never did protein drinks. 3 meals with 3oz protein is about 60g protein. This was my plan from day 1, though the first 6 weeks were pureed and I rarely managed the whole thing. Good luck, Tek -

Once you're able to get all your protein from solid food, you really need to stop with the supplements. It might be a few months before you're able to eat that much. As we lose weight, our protein requirements - like our calorie requirements - drop as well. My protein goal is 60 grams per day. -
How long were you on supplemental protein after surgery? I'm tired of it. It's expensive. And I'm at a loss on how to get extra protein in. Currently, I'm having two protein shots a day, each of which are 25 g. Fifty grams of protein is a lot to make up in food, plus make your fluid goals. How do you do it?
