    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

    @INEEDABUDDY I’m exercising using Leslie Sansone DVD’s. They’re fun to do. I figure whatever I can do for myself beforehand would benefit me. I’m getting revision from sleeve to RNY July 17th.

    Shakes

    I cannot for the life of me have a shake since this last surgery. Back story - 5/27 revised sleeve to RNY opened back up 6/8 said twisting 6/17 opened again and re routed the RNY to mid intestines. Shakes I loved last week just can’t do it. I have to desire to eat anything nor drink. Suggestions!? I’m going to try and get down a premiere Protein Drink now. Not even close to getting my oz. of liquids either.
  3. Hello I had the sleeve 5 years ago and lost 70 lbs. My goal was to lose 90. And the past 6 months I have gained back 25. I want to stop this in it's tracks!! I am scheduled for revision to bypass next month. I get very conflicting stories on expected weight loss. Dr says I should lose half what I did with sleeve, the video Dr Weiner has says no loss is expected. I would like to know from actual patient who has had this revision what their weight loss was after revision...

    Revision sleeve to bypass

    Anxious to hear how Old Profile's surgery went. I am meeting with my surgeon next week to discuss bypass revision surgery for fixing GERD, hiatal hernia, and had weight gain after sleeve. Best of luck to you!!
  6. Add me to the list of people with lap band failures. Mine was 12 years old. It slipped upward around my esophagus and caused a large hiatal hernia. I had no fill in it and still was throwing up every other meal I ate. The surgeon I saw recommended a bypass--he said it was easier to do the revision in one surgery (which I preferred instead of two separate surgeries) and I also had a history of GERD. So I went that way and the only regret that I've had is that I didn't get the bypass instead of the lap band 12 years ago! Get that dang band out and save yourself a lot of woe!😁

    Revision completed

    Today is my 1 month post op revision to bypass. I am weighing in at 167.8 . It seems that I am a dumper on processed foods. If the main ingredient is a processed carb I am done for. We went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast the morning of the wedding and I had bacon and a biscuit and gravy, 45 min later I was dying and praying to God to help me out so I would be okay for the wedding, sigh. FYI the biscuit was very small and about 100 calories and melted in my mouth I was so happy just to be able to eat it. I go to the Dr. tomorrow for my appointment with lots of questions I will be writing down today.

    Revision sleeve to bypass

    I am getting a revision done this coming Wednesday. What happen was I had my sleeve done in nov 2013 and I did great! But I had very bad heartburn so I started taking nexium daily. In 2016 my surgeon did a hiatal hernia repair. That did not help so I just dealt with it and ended being put on dexilant medication for Gerd. So I had a upper GI and endoscopy and it showed regurgitation and acid reflux . So my doctor sent everything over to blue shield of California PPO. And it was authorized by them . My surgery was supposed to Take place April 8, 2020 but had to be rescheduled because of the coronavirus. So my new date is this coming Wednesday, June 24 and I got my clearance and I even had the Covid test last Thursday so I’ve been quarantine till Wednesday. I’ve also gained some weight in the last two years so this should help with my Gerd and weight gain. I’m very nervous but I’ll be so happy to be off the medication for the horrible heartburn.

    Back on track

    Good luck Eric. I had the same problem - sleeve 3 years ago, lost 100 pounds in 8 months, gained back 60 over the next 2.5 years. I tried resetting my pouch and going back to pre-op diet mode, but nothing really worked for me. In the end I decided to have a revision to bypass earlier this year. I've been losing weight consistently (but slowly) since then. However, it hasn't affected any real change - I can eat just about anything (pizza, bread, pasta, whatever - serving sizes are normal portions, not bariatric portions). For the most part I DON'T eat these things (still doing shakes and fish and salad, etc.), but every now and then I've just been pushing to see if there is anything that my body does not like/can't handle. There's nothing. I'm really disappointed because I thought the even smaller stomach would help with portion control (it doesn't), that having bypass would make me not like sugar (it doesn't), or that I would have other food issues (like lactose intolerance - I don't). So it's a good wake-up call for me that portion control and what I eat is the key - I can't depend on the surgery to help me out, other than initial weight loss. For whatever reason, my body has reacted to these surgeries really well. In both cases I was up and walking and feeling great within a day after surgery, I never had food restrictions like so many others (I could eat at 3 months what many patients could at 2 years post-op), and I never had any food issues after surgery either. I'm saying all this in that the second surgery didn't fix any of my food/body issues, it's all a mind game, really. In a way I wish I hadn't had the second surgery (money-wise), but if I hadn't done it, I don't know if I would have learned these lessons as well. FWIW, I think the best plan for me going forward is a mix of protein-prioritized keto (or maybe paleo) mixed with intermittent fasting (I'll start with 12 hours and work my way down to 8 hours, maybe to 6 eventually), plus adding some weight training to my regimen. I'm working on weaning myself off of all my bad habits over the next week or so and will be starting fresh on July 1st. Hopefully others can chime in with what they've done to deal with weight regain after surgery. Unfortunately I think a lot of people who do tend to leave these forums (as I did), so I'm hoping that sticking around here on a regular basis will keep me more motivated.

    JUNE 2020 BYPASSERS

    I'm alone. My parents are dead, I'm divorced, no kids. My sister lives in Texas, my friends are scattered all over the US. I had sleeve surgery in 2011 and I recovered alone from that, too. Don't worry, you'll do fine. You will be accountable not only to yourself but also to your surgical team and to the folks here on BP, if you want. I posted quite a lot in the months after my sleeve, and then gradually fell away. Now a revision to bypass for GERD and I'm back. I'm scheduled for the 29th.

    Can’t win!

    Hi. I’m home as of Friday afternoon. Had a really bad two days in the hospital. The lacerations are more and deeper and they took the beginning of my intestines where the revision was. He felt moving it mid intestines was the best option. It was the “y” area of the RNY that was giving me an issue and was flipping or twisting. So he moved it dead center on my small intestine. So far I’m okay. No bile vomit and nausea. Horrendously sore. My abdominal wall is a mess for sure. I had some bottom end issues as I think i was stopped up and gassy. Surgeon said use an enema today. So far so good. Had to move stuff out. It was horrendous. Worse then giving birth and felt like I was giving birth from there hahahahah Otherwise so far so good. Ty so very much for thinking of me. It’s so appreciated.

    June Sleevers Post Op

    @BrandiRB Hi, and congrats! We’re sleeve twins! I also had my VSG on 6/10/20. For everyone else, congrats as well. I had the lapband back in 2014 and lost about 90lbs in less than a year. I did really well. I got pregnant in 2015, gave birth in 2016. I lost all of my pregnancy weight and got back on track but wasn’t losing weight. By 2017, I had gained about 30lbs or so. I had to find a different doctor because my surgeon’s practice had closed down. I had an EGD done which revealed that my lapband had corroded causing a hole in my stomach. I had the lapband removed in January 2018. My surgeon said it would take 6 months to a year before considering a revision because the hole needed to heal properly. So fast forward to November 2019: I found a surgeon with an affordable cash pay option. I had another EGD done to make sure the hole healed properly and that the scar tissue was minimal. Once I got the okay, we scheduled my procedure. Unfortunately, COVID-19 delayed it. So, I started my liquid diet on 6/1/20. It was supposed to be for 2 weeks where I’d have surgery on 6/15/20 but my surgeon pushed me up to 6/10/20 because he said he had a family emergency and would be traveling out of town. So, my liquid preop diet was for 10 days instead of 14 days. My preop weight was 337 on 6/1/20. On the day of surgery (6/10/20), I weighed 322. Today (6/21/20), I weigh 315. The incision site is still a little tender but they are healing well. It didn’t help that one of my kids accidentally ran into it (twice 😩). I still can’t sleep on my side yet. I’m having a hard time getting in regular water. I HAVE to have a Crystal Light to drink it smoothly. Protein Shakes are okay but I have to pace myself. I also noticed that I have to start early in the day to get it all in. There are some days that I have not gotten it all in. I don’t always have a desire to “eat.” It’s weird but I don’t want to force myself. I did this on yesterday and got nauseous. First (and last) time I do that. I do have a desire to chew - not because I’m hungry - just because chewing is what I’ve been accustomed to and can’t do just yet. So, my diet setup is like this: 10 days - preop full liquids Weeks 1 & 2 - post op full liquids Week 3 - post op purée foods Week 4 - post op soft foods Week 5 - post op regular texture/low carb/high protein My surgeon’s Nurse Practitioner met with me for my 1 week follow up and said that I should lose about 20lbs by the time of my 1 month post op appointment. I was like YIKES but okay. As far as exercise goes, I’ve walked in my home mostly. I did go on a walk with my husband and kids one day last week as well. It wasn’t bad but I was a bit anxious. I plan to amp it up as I can tolerate it. I still have some trapped gas and my back is very painful when I yawn, stretch or sit/lay a certain way. I believe it’ll go away in due time, though. I have an abdominal binder that I’m supposed to wear at all times when I’m awake. I’ve worn it daily but not for the entire day. I usually tolerate it for about 7/8 hours. My surgeon said it’s supposed to help my stomach and other organs as it heals to sort of “snap back.” They suggested I wear it for the first month. Bad breath - yep, I have it. I’m brushing and rinsing often to help deal with it. I look forward to changing up my diet because this, my friends, is not cute! I drove at 1 week/1day post op and did fine. I cannot drive my SUV just yet because it’s hard for me to get up and done. So I’m driving my husband’s car for now. Other than that, I’m gradually getting back into the swing of my normal routine. I’ve meal prepped for my family, done laundry and housework as well. I take my time and listen to my body. If I feel winded, I rest. I’m excited about this journey. I honestly don’t know what my end goal is.

  14. Charcoal was the surgery before and maybe you’re right. I thought it was a good gas release. Or so I was told and read. Don’t honestly think it had to do with the revision though. I was sick and gassy before the pills. Who knows. Water under the bridge and already had a 3rd surgery

    JUNE 2020 BYPASSERS

    I had Revision Surgery on the 16th of June. I went from sleeve to bypass. I’m doing really well today. I did have gas in my shoulder, that was new for me. Get up and walk and take gasX if permitted. My stomach seem very swollen, like the whole thing. I feel very hungry at times, but I get busy and don’t get my fluid in, I’m fine after that. Your brain doesn’t catch up with your new stomach for a bit.
  16. Was that recommended? No. Charcoal wasn’t. I heard it was good to gas. Oh well that was a big mistake. As for being opening twice, now it’s three times and this is the most horrific pain I’ve ever felt in my life. I’m so emotionally drained for two days. Every time I burp I say omg here we go again. I can do another surgery. I just can’t. This has taken its toll on me now. I just took some anti gas that the doc prescribed. I got a weird taste in my mouth and got scared and woke up. They revised my revision and moved it to another part of the intestine and he seems to think this is for the best. But here I am 72 hours out and got a weird gas burp with the taste I had last week an the week before. So I took a PPI. there is no burning or nausea like last time That then lead me to vomit. But every time I burp I get anxious. I’m an emotional wreck. I have so much “butt” pressure. Unsure of those lovey hospital beds or just huge piles of gas ahah that needs to be gone.

  18. Had my pre-op surgery meeting with my doc today. I am scheduled for surgery on June 29. I am excited and scared and nervous and worried and everything. I literally feel everything right now lol. I am revising bad to bypass anyone out there went thru a band revision to bypass
  19. I'm sorry that you are having these problems. They mirror what I went through with the lapband. The first years were fine, lost 70 pounds but somewhere along the way, the fill was too tight, too loose, vomiting, slider foods just to eat. Finally decided to get an unfill, gained all the weight back. My doctor said that some people just can't handle a foreign object being inside their body. I recently revised to sleeve, so far -so good. Good luck on whatever decision you make.

  21. I have been thinking a great deal about my lap band and the struggles I've had for the last few years. I had my lap band surgery in 2013. I lost 60 lbs and everything was great until 2017, when I traveled to Hawaii. The flight messed with my lap band and since then I can't seem to get it right. I had another surgery to fix the placement of the lap band because it slipped but that still hadn't gotten me back to my original success. Since this time, I've had fills and defills and nothing seems to work. I travel allot (before Covid) and the flights always mess with my lap band. Right now, I am waiting for another fill but can't get it because of Covid. However, I'm having issues with the band. Some days I can't eat anything, not even coffee, the next day I'm starving and everything goes through, bread, pasta, chicken etc. I checked in with my Dr, and she says that stress and hormones are a factor in the band tightening. Well, I'm hitting menopause so my hormones fluctuate ALLOT. I have diligently tried everything. I have been following all the rules, eating protein; small bites, chewing etc. I'm getting tired of this constant back and forth. And to top it off, I'm gaining weight again. I am considering having the band removed. A friend suggested revision surgery to gastric bypass. She had it done and she doesn't have any problems anymore. I also heard that some have the gastric sleeve. What does this group suggest?

    Hate bypass

    Interesting thought. Maybe that is a reason why revision weight loss is often quite disappointing? Have you progressed to really solid "solids"? You need to be patient. I feel like I have about the same restriction I had with the MGB, maybe a bit more 3.5 months out and I guess it will be about the same as before later on. If progressing to eating really solid "solids" doesn't solve your problem it might be time to incorporate more of less calorie dense foods into your diet. That way you can embrace the feeling of less restriction without gaining weight. It might be helpful to read about the "pound of cure" or watch some of Dr. Weiner's videos about the diet he prescribes his WLS patients.
  23. I’m having a revision from sleeve to bypass on July 5th. I had a hard time with protein shakes when I had the sleeve, they tasted so chalky. Can anyone recommend protein shakes from Bariatric Pal that are good and not chalky tasting?

    Hate bypass

    Yes and the problem is that people like me may have been counting on having at LEAST the same restriction we went into having to do a revision. This sadly isn't the case and so confusing to get my head around. It irritates me even more that I had picked this surgery to begin with and went with the surgeons advice to do the sleeve. Had I done this surgery first I more then likely would not have gotten the erosive esophagitis and I would have the restriction this bypass came with as a virgin surgery. I don't see how people do this as a way to lose regain, I truly don't coming off a sleeve and I understand why the girl who started this post is upset about all the weight she has to try and lose with no restriction. I mean really what is the point ? She is doing it all on her own as far as I am concerned.

    thank you.... it's been a long road.... started back in 2009 at 232lbs with band... ER removal 2019 at 143lbs..... Revision 2.5 years later at 173.5lbs. Today (weight in profile pic) 126lbs.
