Alcohol is a Transfer Addiction !!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I read it a few months back and revisiting with a reply and saying out loud that I have a problem. I've been transparent with my BF, fam and close friends that I'm struggling...but hiding how bad it can get. Last night was a sure sign of transfer addiction and will be seeking help. I'm 5.5 years out and over the last two years have gained 50lbs. I stopped working out and have been holding around the same weight the last 6 months. I can't seem to get the ME back that was so focused. My Dad passed away in 2019 and to cope, I started leaning on wine and drinking (as did my Siblings) Then during 2020 covid, I was drinking during the week, sometimes alone when my SO was at work and often a bottle of wine all by myself. I was able to get back some control in 2021, but find myself sneaking drinks and hiding my evidence. Last night, for no good reason I had wine delivered and drank 1.5 bottles of wine after BF went to work. I know the next steps will be therapy to figure out the triggers and coping skills. Again, thanks for posting your story to inspire me to address this problem before it's too late. I worked so hard to be healthy and I'm sabotaging my future self.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

I am five weeks and one day post-op and down 41 lbs. from surgery weight, 50 from before the pre-op diet, and 76 from my heaviest. My incisions have all healed except one that looks a little bit herniated. My surgeon said he'd look at it at my six-week appointment on Tuesday, but didn't sound overly concerned since there's no pain. I had a slowdown (not really a stall, just a significant slowdown in weight loss) for two weeks but now appear to be back on the loss rollercoaster. My dietitian told me to start eating small portions of carbohydrates (potatoes, etc.) because apparently my system doesn't function well on protein-only. This has had the added benefit of relieving my constipation, so I no longer need to take docusate. I'm on about 1000 calories a day, which seemed high to me, but the dietitian pointed out that my activity level is more intense than many bariatric patients, PLUS I return to my physical job next week. I am completely off my blood pressure medications and my blood pressure is usually around 125/70 or 125/75. Not high enough for my primary care physician to be concerned, especially since I still have weight to lose. I also am on half the dose of antidepressant I was on (and feel great), and I need to make an appointment with my sleep clinic because I think my CPAP either needs to be dialed way down, or just simply eliminated. I am allowed to return to lifting weights (slowly) next week, so I have been running. I spent the first two weeks just walking, then did short (~100 m) jogs to get my body used to it. I am now on week 3 of Couch-to-5K and my mile time has gone down by almost four minutes since pre-op. I am with you on the mental portions. I have been trying to train myself to be willing to throw away food rather than finish it just to be polite. I am looking for a therapist to help me through this. I am discovering what foods fill me up and what foods "slide" through me. Today I met a friend for coffee and ordered ricotta toast. Ended up with an absolutely enormous slab of sourdough with what had to be 250 grams of ricotta on it. I ate two bites and was done, and am still full two hours later. But if I eat, say, a hamburger patty, it just goes right down. Absolutely zero regrets. I wish I'd done this 10-15 years ago.
  3. This whole process really screws with your mind. I'm 10 weeks out. This is what goes on in my head constantly. I lost 50 pounds before surgery and "only" 25 since. Woot! I lost 75 pounds total. I'm "only" losing two pounds a week. OMG I'm losing TWO pounds a week!! I don't feel like I look like I lost 70 pounds. Oh wow! My belt went from one notch to 5!! I feel the restriction. I don't feel the restriction. Maybe I'm eating too much and stretched out my pouch. I gained a half pound in one day...must be water. I gained a half pound in one day...I'm going to have to go back to my old clothes! I gained a half pound? I probably look exactly as I did day 1. What if this doesn't work? I ruined my life. I'm so glad I had this surgery. I'd never be able to continue losing weight and keep it off.......and repeat.

Almost 3 weeks post op and afraid to eat

The possibility of tearing staples at this stage is pretty low. According to what my Surgeon said and what I have read through all my research, the staples will leak, if they are going to leak in the first 7-10 days after surgery. He sent me in for a barium Xray to watch the radioactive fluid go down my throat, into my stomach and ensure none was leaking out of the staples. After this point, you are pretty much in good shape. The tissue is growing over the staples and will seal itself. The first week or so is going to be challenging as you get into more solid foods. The key is definately slow, slow, slow. and as you get into regular food that requires chewing, chew 20-30 times, put your fork down and wait a minute or so between swallowing and starting the process again. If you go too fast it will feel like it is getting stuck in your espophagus. It should take at least 30 minutes to eat your food when you start eating solid foods. Take your time. You will know if you ate too fast because it will feel like something is stuck in your throat and will hurt. Vomiting can happen at this point. It is not pleasant....but slow down and it will not happen.

  11. I struggled with the pre-surgery diet and the liquid phase. For me, the week prior to the surgery was much tougher than the week after the surgery (I had no major complications, so take that for what it is worth). And it is a struggle for the reasons that you mentioned -- you are completely changing your life. You are not just changing how much you eat, you are changing what you can eat and you are changing your emotional coping mechanisms. I had my little plan for how I was going to eat right and eat light for the few weeks before the surgery and then my emotions and fears blew that plan to pieces. My mind was terrified of what was to come -- I had some terrible eating binges about 10 days before surgery. But remember why you ever stepped into the surgeon's office to begin with. For me, it was the realization that I had been telling myself for 20 years that the "next diet" would work. Some of the "next diets" worked for a while, but none of them kept the weight off. Everyone says surgery is a tool for weight loss. Agreed. But I needed an extreme tool to lose an extreme amount of weight. It was now or never and I didn't consider never to be an acceptable answer. So I buckled down, made it through the liquid liver phase (it gets better after about day 3) and got through to surgery. And it has been worth it. I'm 2 months out and do not regret it.

    To up fluid intake

A dime is 19 mm in diameter, the closest British equivalents would be the 5p (18 mm) or 1p (20.3 mm).

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I think it's good to do the pros and cons. I just had surgery a week ago and I'm hungry mentally but my body is in ketosis. I'm not very hungry from my stomach telling me. I'm definitely still healing and know it could change. I don't like veggies either. I'm going to be trying an Atkins/keto diet once I'm able to eat some normal things. Idk if I'll be able to binge again. I can see myself trying but depending on the surgery, it's for life. I'll just be uncomfortable but my weight will be in a healthier place. 37 yr in Kansas. Started journey at 320, 6 months preoperative diet for insurance, surgery was 10/6 and I'm at 276.

Guys who started over 400 lbs.

Hey Guys! I had my RYGB on August 4th of this year and am doing pretty good. I started the program at 384LBS, but was hanging out in the 390's prior to my initial weigh-in March of 2020. My dad had the RYGB back in 1999-2000, and was right around 500LBS before his surgery. 20 years later and he has lost nearly 300LBS and lives a life I can only hope to at his age. He was actually a big inspiration for me to get the surgery, b/c I was having all the health problems he did, but 5 -10 years earlier! I saw how it changed his life and he is so much happier now, and I want that! I've been losing pretty good so far, and I have a lot of good days, but there are still some emotional ones as I still am battling a number of health issues that I hope clear up as I continue my "new life!" Anyways, just wanted to say hi, maybe make a couple "bro" friends, and join the discussion. Hope everyone is well and had a good weekend.

    No weight loss

I'm 10 weeks post-op (RYGB). I gained 10LBS the first week post-op and was almost in tears over it! Slowly, within the coming weeks the weight loss cranked up, until I shot past my weight on surgery day, and just kept going. Now, I've been at the same number for the last 7 days, but I'm tracking everything I consume, and I'm getting my walks in daily, so I know I'm doing right. Typically I'll have 3-4 days of loss followed by a week of "homeostasis" for lack of a better description, where I'm guessing my body is just getting used to the new normal. Keep on doing things by the book, and keep your chin up! Know you've got a lot of friends here and we're all rooting for you!! Please let us know when you make that breakthrough and start shedding

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I got my sleeve done 10/13 so I am 3 days post op. I agree the first day I was so groggy from the anesthesia I could barely get fluids down. I feel a lot better as of today. I'm ready to progress to at least soft foods! I will be focusing on water and chicken broth in addition to my protein intake

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

When I had mine done a few years back I had the same issue with water. Adding crystal lights minimized the aches going down. It was weird because prior to I didn’t like crystal light and I preferred water solo lol. But it’s true what my Dr. said your taste buds will change. And another thing he strongly suggested was to NOT buy in bulk yet since it’ll all be trial and error until one can discover what one can tolerate, because again what one might tolerate and like prior to surgery can change post. My revision from sleeve to duodenal switch is 10/27!!

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Had sleeve surgery 10/13 so three days post op. Day of surgery was the toughest with soreness and getting water in. But each day since then has been huge improvement with both. One thing I am thankful for is the lack of the hunger feeling. I got it a couple of times but realized it was in my brain and not signals from my body. A couple sips of water easily satisfied that urge. I am very excited about the days and weeks that lie ahead!

    Regret and Depression

I have depression. After surgery I felt energized. It was amazing. For the first time in years wanted to be a part of things again. I know my results are not normal. I have taken Prozac 20 mg for 10++ years. I was especially moody post surgery, but it has settled down. I feel great and have felt great since my surgery. My initial mood swings were challenging for Hubby and I, but I think we have come through to the other side. Hang in there! The first few months are so hard.
  23. Wow, thanks for the tip. I do take 150mg XL Wellbutrin I have been taking it for 3 years (and before that 10+ years of 300mg XL) with by old stretched out pouch and had no issues. My pouch after revision will be only 1 oz, so I'd better advise my prescribing physician

Thank you for posting about your journey. I suspect my friend had a similar procedure 30 years ago but she refuses to look at a revision. I have tons of positive thoughts for you and this next part of your life! I’m 62 and my RNY is on 10/25. I can’t wait for the next part of my life to start!
