  1. Hi! I am so glad to have found this list! I am a few weeks away from banding (July 23). I'm 53 years old, 5'3" and 206 pounds, a self-employed mother of one, and vegetarian. My main excercise is "aerobic knitting" (which hasn't helped get the weight off at all!). I'm looking forward to learning from all your experiences. Ellie's mom

    Vitamins, Calcium, and B12?

B12 can only be found in animal meat Proteins. Vegetarians, vegans, and anyone else not eating animal muscles will become deficient in B12. That's why you should take it. Sublinguals are the tastiest option. Calcium because you won't absorb it the same way and you may become deficient unless you're drinking enough milk. I personally never drink mill so a supplement is required. But make sure it's calcium citrate (different stomach receptors). Iron may also be required for women. B1 is often recommended for the first six months as you won't eat enough to get it naturally. Biotin will strengthen your hair and nails. You'll be taking a multi
  3. I started week three today and I got to add: yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, re-fried Beans, mashed potato, lactose free milk, sugar free low calorie pudding, mashed hard boiled eggs. I think there might be one or two other things but that's pretty close. I have that for the next two weeks. I made myself some pumpkin tofu custard, greek yogurt does down just fine and I made some vegetarian chili that I plan to puree. I tried last night but the yellow split peas weren't totally mushy yet. I also plan to do a little egg salad with yogurt instead of mayo.

AmericaRx.com and VitaminShoppe.com have great sublingual and chewable selections.

    Any Vegetarians Here?

I tried eating a vegetarian diet during the summer, and did alright with it for about a month and a half. I noticed that I had a really hard time meeting my Protein requirements, and thus had a hard time keeping myself feeling full. Beans, ricotta, nuts, and the other protein sources I was utilizing just didn't seem to keep me satisfied. I did notice how much better I felt though, as I felt healthier, more energetic, and a whole lot lighter. Any tips for alternate protein sources? I have been wishing that a vegetarian bandster would step forward on here so that I could get some tips and give it another go round. I really want to try it again! Maybe I should start slow and be a Pescetarian first, then move on to Ovo Lacto Vegetarianism? Any ideas would be great. Thanks for stepping forward. I really needed someone to talk to about this, as it's been bugging me for a while now.

    Any Vegetarians Here?

I'm not a vegetarian but I can eat just like I did before banding. Why would you not be able to eat veggies? I love my salads and veggies. You can always chop / puree your veggies to your liking.

    Any Vegetarians Here?

I've been wondering the same thing...I was vegetarian for about 30 years and just in the last year or so have started eating small amounts of chicken and turkey (I don't really like but can tolerate them) to pacify my two adult sons that I'm getting enough Protein. I'm wondering about the Worthington, Loma Linda, or Morningstar Farms meat substitutes...anyone have any thoughts to share about them? I use them occasionally now and am wondering if I'll be able to after I'm banded. They don't seem to chew up very well even when I'm really concentrating on chewing. I do use Beans...lentils are a super source of protein and others are good, too. Refried beans and salsa are one of my staples, and I'm thinking I'll be able to use that when I get to mushies. Thanks for startingthis thread...it will be interesting to see how many of us there are. Emily

    Canadian "AUGUST" Challenge

Buffie - I read that rice can sometimes be hard to pass through the band. Also, if there is seaweed around your sushi it might be hard to actually chew into small pieces. I'm a vegetarian, so I don't know about the raw fish...but I assume it would be quite easy to break down and would be good protein.

Is there any particular reason why you're avoiding meat? Are you a vegetarian/vegan?
  12. Hey sleevers, I had my surgery on 08-11-2015. The first week and a half I had no problems with nausea just gas and pain/soreness. Going into 2-3 weeks and I'm constantly nauseated. food is evil to me now. Any kind of food is hard to eat. Everything tastes overly sweet especially that fake sugar garbage they tell you to consume. All the Protein shakes I was made to purchase are disgusting. It's one thing if I could just chug it down but now sine my stomach is so small I have to sip on it for over an hour? Nope. So I know I'm not getting enough protein. Tried to eat more protein in diet although I'm vegetarian so it takes a bit more and being able to handle different types of foods which I can't right now in this stage of recovery. I was on zofran but caused very bad migraines. Then was put on Phenergan but pills was too chalky and made it worse to take, made me more nauseated. Tried to take some pepto bit started dry heaving and eventually threw that up. Finally got a rx patch for nausea and bought sea bands for acupressure. They have helped but it is still hard to eat anything. The nausea kicks in high gear once I start to smell the food I'm about to eat. I've been living off triscuits, mashed potatoes, and cheese. I can't even handle broth or Soups for the most part. I want to do better with my food but I'm in limbo. I drink plenty of ice Water so I'm not dehydrated. It's worse in the morning for some reason. I don't know if it'd because it has been a long time since my last meal? I stopped my nexium after the surgery. I haven't had heartburn. It's all nausea but I started taking it again to see if it's some sort of reflux issue...but no such luck yet. I don't have any other symptoms so I know it's nothing serious from the procedure. Has anyone else had this problem? How long did it last? How did you over come it? I'm at a loss. I was fine the first week then after that it's been a struggle. It's so weird. HELP!!! Sincerely, Would rather be in pain then constant nausea.

    Success Did Not Come Easy....

To answer some of your questions. The weight gain (blah)...yes, it happens. I gained the 40 lbs between 2003 and 2006 and, after a significant breakup, I just needed something else to focus on. I started simple with walking and eating only vegetarian. I didn't join the gym until about 3 years ago but, since then, I am a regular and do not go less than 5 days a week/often 7. I held on to two pair of my favorite post op/weight loss pants and was determined to get back into them...they fit big now. I think the way you can get motivated is to put it into your schedule. It should be as regular as making dinner, going to work, taking a shower..the gym/working out needs to be added to your day schedule. Even if it's just 20 mins walking around your neighborhood! I have managed to avoid a bunch of loose skin and I contribute that to being active and drinking TONS of Water. I don't drink soda anymore and my "soft drink" will either be Crystal Light or iced tea/with Splenda. Also, when I got back to work after two weeks of recovery, I started walking around my office during my 15 minute breaks. Now I'm that crazy workout lady who walks during her lunch too :-) Oh and as far as hydration goes, try coconut water...if you can find it in your area. It's SO good and refreshing, with different flavors like mango and pineapple. I feel extra hydrated when I have coconut water. PS...my dear friend had GB a year after I did. At first she refused to get it done because she was going to do the "cabbage Soup diet"...well, that didn't work...obviously. She is one of the people who wasn't dedicated and has gained a lot of her weight back She had a lot of loose skin, went to Mexico to get it removed and I really think they just took her money and didn't do anything but cut her open and sew her up (swear). Now she's on the "pouch shrinking" diet. What? Yes, that's a real diet and I just let her vent and tell me she doesn't eat that much, etc. But I've seen her snack on sugary things a lot. Hope this helped! Betsie

    Protein & Water Concerns

Hi Everyone! I'm new here. Joined back in August 2015 after my initial consultation with my surgeon. My surgery date was November 23, 2015. Been lurking awhile, but this is my first post. All in all, I think I'm doing pretty well. I've lost 61lbs. I tolerate most foods well. I haven't experienced much nausea or vomiting (that only happened once thankfully!). I do have some concerns and I'm hoping the lovely people here can offer some tips. I feel like my life revolves around food now. I feel like I'm constantly eating all day to get my required Protein in (my doctor recommends 65-80 grams per day). Water is a whole other beast (64oz). It seems I just don't have the space for the volume of food and water necessary to meet these requirements. I know once we are able to eat solid foods, we should be getting most of our Proteins that way. I do okay maybe half the week and the other half I'm still using shakes to supplement. Should I not be doing that? I almost feel like Protein Shakes will be something that's part of my life forever, but there's a lot of people who disagree with that feeling. While I'm not vegan or vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination, I CANNOT just eat meat and nothing else all day long. I eat veggies and dairy products as well. I don't eat much fruit due to the sugar content. If I have any at all it's blended in a shake or 1/2 a teaspoon is added to my Greek yogurt to take the tang out. To make matters all the more awesome, I was never a big water drinker. If I had 8 cups of water in a month, that was a lot. So to go from that to 8 cups PER DAY is really difficult for me. I get maybe half. My doctor is aware and it's something I'm working on. He'd like me to get it increased, and quickly at that. So. Any tips to ensure I get as much protein packed into a single meal WITHOUT using shakes? Or is it okay to supplement with them as long as I need to? Tips for water consumption would be awesome, too. Thanks for reading! Sorry if I rambled
  15. Help!!! I will be taking my first work related trip exactly 4 weeks post op and don't know what to anticipate as far as eating. I got an email this morning asking if I have any special food needs (I'm assuming this was to target vegetarian/vegan), but I have no clue what to say. This person does not know I have had surgery and I do not anticipate telling them either. BTW-I am exactly one week post-op today.
  16. I can eat the yogurt, cheese, applesauce, & mashed potatoes. I haven’t really ventured out with trying different foods yet. I made a mango sorbet yesterday with just chopped frozen mangos & a little splash of almond milk. I ate the entire thing, probably like 6oz. I’m getting tired of yogurt so I have to think of other things to make. I’m also vegetarian so I definitely have to think of foods to eat.
  17. Yes. This is true. I have a deeply troubled stepdaughter that has used her vegetarianism (and for a while, veganism) as a socially acceptable excuse for her anorexia. By claiming a restrictive diet she avoided eating and when she shed weight she blamed it on her diet. I'm not saying this is what the OP is doing. But always consider every angle. My stepdaughter was convinced that her behaviors were based in a disgust of meat and the animal industries in our country...but those arguments lacked a little something when she was wearing leather shoes and a fur-trimmed jacket as she spoke them. She's still vegetarian now but it took her several months with a therapist to accept that she started this particular food journey because of her disorder. ~Cheri
  18. As I've gotten farther out from surgery I've also considered a return to at least a vegetarian lifestyle. I spent the years from 15-21 & 26-28 as a vegetarian and really only resumed such a meat-heavy diet due to my choice to have the sleeve. It was the easier option, and I live overseas where there aren't mega-marts with a plethora of vegan/vegetarian food options/substitutes. This entire pregnancy meat has completely disgusted me to the point where I can hardly stand to be in the room when it's cooking...and I'm the family cook! The first thing you need to do is get yourself a few books. The biggest mistake vegetarians/vegans make is not educating themselves about a properly balanced diet. It's very easy to be an unhealthy vegetarian or vegan if you're not careful! It's not as simple as avoiding meat. And in America, it's so easy to be a vegan that relies heavily on processed "fake" foods that are intended to sub in for foods you've given up - when these are no healthier (and in some cases less healthy) than the alternative. The more of your food you make yourself, the healthier you'll be and that applies to any style of eating. So get to your local library or bookstore and get some reading materials before you jump into this. It's more of a challenge than just skipping the cheeseburger. Everything from medicine to your Protein shake needs to be considered. One of the biggest and easiest books to read is The Veganomicon. I refer to it pretty frequently. I enjoy quinoa (an easily digestible seed that is a complete protein), lentils are almost as good as meat and I prefer seitan over tofu or tempeh any day. Limit your soy intake and don't trade in a life of meat for a life of soy. Moderation in all things! Go slowly. This is not a lifestyle you can adapt overnight. Transition slowly or you'll burn out and don't expect to live perfectly right away. It's hard to stick to a strict diet and you'll see very quickly how other people aren't as accepting or understanding of the challenges it presents not only to you but to them. Good luck. It's possible to do this but I recommend a slow transition to vegetarian and the on to vegan over the course of several months to a year. ~Cheri

the things i was eating the most at 3+ weeks out was tuna salad, and canned chicken salad. They are very soft and moist and are generally well tolerated. baked fish is also a good one, or shrimp. black bean soup was another staple for me, i'd add in a little unflavored protein powder as well just to help supplement. You do need to add the meats back in to help get your protein ( unless you're vegetarian). Just start small, take one small bite of tuna, and wait 4 or 5 min. then try another. and chew it up really really well, this helps tons! Good luck to you!!

I became a vegetarian post op. and am not having any problems at all- other than some hair loss which was present pre op. I do eat dairy a few times a month (yogurt, cheese) but other than that it is all meatless items, fruits and veggies... I have personally NEVER felt better than I have since adopting this lifestyle and the hardest part has been cooking for me and hubby- he is a true carnivore...
  21. So I am almost at the end of my 4th month and it seems I am getting full lot faster than before 🤷🏻‍♀️ Like the amount, I was able to eat, now I can't as much. Before I was okay eating around 0.75 cup (half of it is usually yogurt) but now I feel stuffed with the same level, so I have reduced the portion size a little to may be 0.5 to 0.6 cup or incorporate less solid and more semi solid like yogurt (which I usually have with every meal for my protein as a vegetarian eater). I don't know if anyone has experienced similar trajectory. Not sure if I should be concerned? Because I am studying, I am not as active. I do make sure to walk about 45 mins to an hour a day but that's mostly my activity other than some chores here and there. So I can't eat more than 3 to 4 meals a day and calories have kinda reduced too (between 600 to 800). I don't know, guess I am rambling but I am unable to eat as much to increase my calories. My dietician said usually patients on our program are around 1000 calories around 6 months mark, so I think I am alright but if I feel stuffed, I can't manage to eat much.

We have this discussion periodically in our local support group. Some people do portion control only and refuse to diet. Some people do portion control and an eating plan... or a diet counting something...carbs, fat, Protein, calories, or anti preservatives, vegetarian.... Just keep your own goals clear, and write them down, and then decide how you are going to get there. We're all different. I have a strict diet of healthy foods at home that I adhere to 85% of the time. Then when I'm at a restaurant, I order whatever I want and just go with portion control. So restaurant eating ais a special event for me. Altough...the longer I have the band, the less interesting food is. I never thought I'd say that!
  24. Thanks girls, u have put my mind at rest, I've binned the scales now. Can't be starting to evolve into a scales warrior lol. I have been on clear fluids, I'm vegetarian so broth wasn't on the menu. I was having weetabix with lots of milk, Water, marmite drink, Heinz Soups, decaff coffee, lolly ices. All in small amounts. I've gained 3 pound since I tried eating over 2 days. I don't actually know how much I should eat each meal, I'm kinda winging it. Today I'm going back to clear fluids and starting again. I'm not hungry so keeping hydrated is a good start x Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
