    ALWAYS A FAILURE

I am So very Grateful I got your replies, I truly appreciate every one of them. I started at 278, I’m currently 227, - I’m 5’7 - I’m a full figured hourglass. I stopped going to the gym - I didn’t see results and working out increased my appetite to eat and/or gave me the perception I could indulge in more food. I rarely get hungry but I get the empty feeling and desire something Good. I’m a foodie but only quality food rich in flavor. I don’t eat junk food often but I will snack on nuts, chips, crackers, I love salt. I’m a home chef. I’ve tried vegan, vegetarian for several months, didn’t lose a pound, but maintained. Seems I got the maintenance under control. I guess on some level, I’ve been to embarrassed to follow-up with my surgeon. Ok so duh! In writing this I realize the salt may be the issue, how do I give it up! Oh man.

    Aversion to Poultry?

I think give it time, I couldn’t tolerate chicken, tuna, sardines during the soft phase no matter how slow or how wet i made it but honestly my body was having a tough time with meat And fats prior due to my gallbladder and food allergies. I did tolerate beef better but grass fed organic beef, and vegetarian organic chicken (green wise Publix store brand) I would just buy and eat less or when chicken went bogo. It depends on the quality meat. But for now I’m working on high protein veggie burgers that have pea protein and vegetables. never cook things dry, keep meat portions smaller too. also can I suggest getting a good digestive enzyme like garden of life chewable, something with a range of enzymes that will help you with the hard to digest foods. I buy from vitamin shoppe or vitacost. I dislike our local gnc it’s a franchise ... but if you have a good shop you can ask about digestive enzymes. also as I said, give things time and try them in small doses even with sleeve. (I had bypass) digestive enzymes can help with preventive for developing GERd.

    Lap Band Removal

I got mine 10 years ago and it worked great-until it didn't. I was never able to eat meat without getting sick, so I just became a vegetarian, but I was OK with that and now I'm happy about it. But back in January I started to slime and vomit almost immediately after EVERY meal, so I had the fill removed and then only got sick about three times a week. But that respite only lasted about 2 months, then I was getting sick again, even after just drinking water sometimes. They did barium swallows and it looked great-no slips, dilations-things of that sort-but still something was wrong. So I went back to the surgeon where he explained that if even if everything looked great on an x-ray, scar tissue develops where the band rubs the stomach, and that's what's causing the restrictions even with no fill in the band. And it was just a matter of time before it restricted so bad NOTHING would get through it without much difficulty. So it's coming out Nov 20 and being revised to an RNY during the same surgery, and I can't wait. I hope I'm not changing one problem for another, but I don't think so. The plus of this is the transition should be easy since I've practiced the "eating rules" for 10 years and know the difference between "head hunger" and true hunger, and maybe finally I can eat without dreading it and wondering "would I get sick THIS meal". I know the portions will still be small, but if they go down without the sliming and "productive burping" and pain I'll be happy!

    Going Vegan After Sleeve

I'm working on transitioning to vegetarianism first, but the end goal is full veganism. I don't want to consume anything that comes from an animal. Have you found any good vitamins/ supplements that are at least vegetarian? Anything you can recommend would be greatly appreciated!

    Going Vegan After Sleeve

Are you considering vegetarianism or full veganism? Being a true vegan is extremely hard, and with WLS you need some protein. I don't eat anything that was alive, but I do eat eggs and cheese, both good protein sources. You'll really have to read labels closely. Anything with gelatin in it isn't vegetarian since it's made of cow hooves. Even many of the vitamins you'll have to take after your surgery aren't vegetarian. Any type of gel cap medicine isn't vegetarian. And it's hard to find an omega-3 fatty acid supplement since those are usually made of fish oil. There are some good vegetable broths out there--when I make soup I use them instead of chicken broth. Anyway, good luck!
  8. I'm 8.5 months out at this point and am crawling along at a snail's pace. At my 6 month follow up the NP said I was doing so great, and only had 10 lbs to go - I said that I really had about 20 lbs to go, but you know how they formulate it differently to have as many success stories as possible. 70% of excess weight rather than healthy BMI. But whatever, I told her my personal goal was 128 not 138. I asked for guidance on how much I should be eating as I was aware of less restriction and more hunger - she told me 600 cals a day until I go back at the 1 year mark. That seemed extreme to me, but I did it for a while. I'm a compulsive tracker - have 8 years worth of tracking on MFP. Daily, I track weight, calories, protein, water, carbs, fat, steps, exercise, bowel movements, menstruation, ovulation. The scale didn't move on 600 and I gained a little. And my energy was terrible, my skin awful, and I began having more food cravings. Honestly - and I am a PCOS weirdo, and none of us are in any way typical at all, and I am not saying anyone else should do this - I only see consistent downward movement on the scale when I up my calories to 1100-1200 and up my carbs to 100g. It is terrifying to me to eat more carbs, but for now I'm going with it. My stats, graphs, and charts show a real correlation that I don't think is coincidence. I am well used to being disciplined - I think as PCOSers we all are - so I will stay on this protocol for a while and if it stops working, it won't be hard for me to go lower again. I avoided coming on here for a while as I felt like I was a fraud or a cheat or I would be admonished for not doing things the "right" way - but I know my body and I'm honest with myself about what I put into it, so for right now this is what is working for me, and me alone. I don't think it helps that it is the last 20 lbs I am trying to lose, and everyone always says they just don't want to budge. (I am also a vegetarian BTW - have been since I was 6 - and I don't have any trouble getting plenty of protein from food. I haven't had to have protein shakes since 6 weeks out. I do a lot of dairy though: FF cottage cheese, FF Greek yoghurt, light babybel cheeses.)
  9. I was writing a response and it disappeared. For a long time I’ve wanted to eat less meat and add in vegetarian protein. But for some reason whenever I try adding vegetables my weight goes up. I lost a lot of weight before but as I wanted to add in vegetarian foods and vegetables my weight crept up. I still don’t know what happened that I needed up on the road back to square one and over 200lbs. at some point I want to try vegetarian protein but with various food allergies I have to be careful. I know that losing weight won’t help my chronic illness, at least not my main medical condition I’ve had since I was a child. But I also know that any burden I can take off my body, by treating what offshoot medical conditions I can or by being a healthy weight, will at least ease some of the burden on my body. Less of me to carry around so I can move around a little easier. Especially as my health declines in ways I can’t control or stop. It’s just exhausting constantly battling my weight. And that the things that makes a normal person better, actually makes me worse (ie. Exercise) I can’t remember what I meant to say in my response. But when I can I buy BariatricPal protein, like in soups. I recently got their pancake and it’s pretty good, 100 calories and 15 grams protein. What gets my weight going down isn’t always consistent. But then my weight tends to crawl and stall for two weeks then go down. I was worried my last surgery would cause gain but thankfully it didn’t. It’s slow going now and I find myself struggling to change to regular foods and add soft vegetables.
  10. This is all really informative actually and I like the cold hard facts so thank you but this is the first time ever i have heard that protein shakes were making you gain weight? How? You mean Like Premier Protein type shakes that have 1 gram of sugar? Im an occasional pescatarian but mostly vegetarian bec I dont ever eat meat so i rely on shakes to get in all of my protein but i am fascinated by the fact that shakes can make you gain. did you test your blood sugar after drinking them? how did you discover this? Its hard enough for me to get in protein but god if i cant have at least one shake a day I am boned. Theres only so many eggs a girl can eat.

No, this is a life long problem. It goes down just fine... The rest 😥. I just can't digest red meat/game well since childhood. Lamb/goat is the gentler of the offenders 😥 lately I've been dealing with the fallout because who cares if I ****my pants anymore 😝 It was one of the main reasons I was a vegetarian for so long (plus I dont really love chicken) Oh...and I hate gravy/sauces/dressings 😳 which is why y'all almost never see me talk about them unless it's a large recipe I'm making for more that just me. Meatlube... Should be M******* 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    Vegetarian bypass peeps?

I also am not full vegetarian, but I get a lot of my protein from beans, lentils, and tofu. I also add unflavored protein (Unjury vegan) to just about anything I can that it will mix well into. Plant fusion and Tru supplements have been my favorite vegan protein shakes out there so far, but there are so many I have yet to try.

    Vegetarian bypass peeps?

I’m not officially vegetarian but would tend to not eat meat Very often, I do have yogurt and whey protein and occasional egg now though a lot has changed after my surgery. there are good vegetarian protein options out there. For protein powders there is PEScience has a plant based protein (I use their whey/casein blend right now ) also for a RTD there is Koia protein shakes, I highly recommend cinnamon horchata. I use Ripple milk (pea protein) to mix with my protein powder that or edensoy soy milk (both unsweetened) I also mix my protein powder with TwoGood yogurt for breakfast. BariatricPal actually has vegetarian food options on their site. I’ve seen a tuna alternative called Sophie’s kitchen vegan Toona that is extremely high in protein 9 grams protein per ounce. There are so many non meat protein sources. It’s good for purée phase. When you start with more regular foods I recommend Gardein brand. The goal is to get protein first and you don’t add complex carbs until you have lost around 75% of excess weight. Though soft vegetables are added earlier. Its really just modifying the nutrition plan with vegetarian protein sources. Ask your nutritionist if they have more information on RNY for vegetarians.
  15. Hi, I'm getting a lap band removed with a RNY revision in November and I was wondering if any of y'all that have had the bypass are vegetarians? What is your "go-to" protein? Thanks!

    Bloating after meals?

A vegetarian diet will definitely make you bloat. Some have said that Beano works to help with the gas. Good Luck 💚
  17. Hello guys, I just wanted to ask if any of you experience bloating after eating meals? I’m almost 3months post gastric bypass. I’m vegetarian if that makes a difference, I don’t eat very fast and I also chew my foods finely. I always wait 30mins before and after eating to drink any liquids. It’s not intense bloat like I’m filling myself up because I don’t eat to a point where I am bursting, I just stop when I know I feel sufficiently full. Just thought would ask, thanks

    Pouch reset

Welcome to the site Many of us have experienced a weight gain. Its great that you have reached out and working on getting it back down. Pouch reset is going back to liquids and progressing back out to real food stage. (It does not shrink your pouch) It may help you feel your restriction a bit. Its one way to help get back to healthy behaviors. Another option is to start at real food stage if you feel reset is too restrictive. Some choose to change diet plans Keto, paleo, vegetarian,IF, whole 30 etc. Only my opinion. Whatever diet you choose, The key is logging your food in an app and staying with in your weight loss calories/macros. Basics: Food plan, exercise, hydrate You know what to do but it may be difficult to get your head back in the game. A few threads on the site that may help. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/425354-the-importance-of-doing-the-head-work/?tab=comments#comment-4776743 https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/428113-🍁-oct-2019-challenge-🍁/?tab=comments#comment-4815439

Are you pre or post op? If you are post op, What are your dieticians’ instructions? Are you losing weight consuming 3000+ calories? If you are pre op or researching surgery Your stomach space will be limited after surgery. Your calories will be low. Follow your dietitians instructions. Not all protein shakes are created equal. Many brands have high sugar, calories, and carbs. Your dietician will give you bariatric approved protein shake advice. They also make vegan protien powders. A few links that may help if you are in research phase. 20. Hello you all! I see a few faces out there that I knew many years ago here. I used to be a host, and even got an award for most followed post! Its been a while. I first joined this forum in 2010. My pic shows me with red hair… its white now! I had a VSG in January of 2011. I entered this plan as a vegetarian, and maintained that status until about a year ago when I upped my game to Vegan eating (Did you know you can drink Coke and eat Oreos and still be vegan?). 7 weeks ago I upped it again and I follow a Whole Food Plant Based diet. It is also vegan eating, but cuts out not only meat and dairy, but any highly refined product including oils, refined sugar, white flour and rice, you get the picture. It is high Carb and low fat. It took me about two years after surgery to get about 65 pounds off (I only had 80-90 to lose) and then started to gain. I gained about 20, trying different diet changes along the way… then started using the 5/2 semi fasting method, and lost the rest in the following year eating an average of 1000 cal a day. So it took me three years to get to goal. Loved it. At last, I felt like the person in the mirror was me. That didn't last long. Slowly, over years, I gained much of the weight back. Eating less didn’t work like it had. I did eat more crap, but much of the time was on calorie counting staying under 1200 cals without much success. I got up to between 20-30 pounds under my highest weight, and managed to keep that much off for the last 8 years. This is a success. I have never been able to do that before. I can eat less, my stomach allows for much more food than it did the two years after surgery, but it still can give me a full signal faster than before surgery. This is a win. I am not sorry I got the surgery. In April of this year (2019) I found out I had breast cancer. In a whirlwind, I went to a ton of appointments and ended up quickly in surgery for a lumpectomy with 2 nodes removed, then a month of daily radiation. I am lucky to have caught it early, and my prognosis is good. Nothing like a kick in the ass to get you back on board a more healthy lifestyle. I was recommended to go to a “survival coach” appointment with Kaiser. I was told they would talk to me about lifestyle changes that would amend my other treatments. So, I found myself in the office at the appointment.(July 19th 2019). I met one on one with Dr. Earnie Bodai and a Nutritionist. He went through my prognosis, not just for Cancer but heart disease, stroke and diabetes. He gave me statistics, and suggestions, and told me I was much more likely to die from other things before I died from breast cancer. He said I would most benefit from eating a Whole Food Plant Based diet. He gave me the research to support it. He handed me over to the nutritionist who filled me in on the details. I had heard about this type of lifestyle before, but didn’t think I could follow it. Nothing like Cancer and a convincing bunch of information to make change easier! I switched to the WFPB diet imdeiately. Thats been just 2 months now. I have done a ton of research to back up what he told me. I ate a ton of food. I didn’t count calories. I traveled for two weeks over seas and managed to stay on plan. I watched ‘forks over knifes’ and ‘What the health’, I went and had labs done after following the plan for a month. My labs came back drastically better… in just one month. I had been a vegan before the labs, but the new small changes in my diet made a HUGE difference. My glucose dropped from 123 to 108… and should continue to drop as time goes by. My total cholesterol dropped 47 points. In one month of eating this way. I have been trying to control my cholesterol for years by other dietary changes. My LDL dropped from 175 to 139…. And yes, at almost two months on plan, eating so much delicious food, I have lost 15 pounds. Just saying. Im doing this with my older sleeve. Its working well. I don’t think I could have done this when my sleeve was newer, as you have to really EAT to have this plan work. I told my nutritionist that I had the sleeve and wondered if I could eat the TWO pounds of veg a day the plan recommended… She said “Start Eating, Eat often if necessary, Don’t worry about protein, your health will improve.” Thats what I have been doing and it works. If any of you out there are at the point where you can eat a lot more than early on in the sleeve process, this plan may work for you too. I am not a DR.. Do your research. I looked up my Survival Dr, Earnie Bodai on line, he said he had some medical papers published on breast cancer and diet, almong other topics, and found out the man is more than just a Dr. He is the Dr. that single handedly got the Breast Cancer stamp approved in the United States and now its being approved by other countries as well. He may well have saved hundreds of thousands of peoples lives through his many good works. I trust his research and recommendations to me. Here is his story if you are interested. https://youtu.be/KlToZUJg4kg Here is the plan I am following now. There are many others that are similar out there. Just look up Whole Food Plant Based diet. The success stories are legion. http://www.kphealthyme.com/Healthy-Eating-Active-Living-Programs/Education-libraries/Plant-Based-Diet.aspx

5 years out need advice please

Some great snack ideas there so thank you . I am vegetarian and have a lactose intolerance which makes it harder for me . I am finding that if I give myself a low calorie treat daily (usually in the evening) this gives me the satisfaction and I dont crave as much . If I stop myself from having something completely I want it all the more and end up binging . Sent from my SM-G973F using Tapatalk
