food and why I love/hate it.

@@CatKaren I love Genepro! I made a fabulous shake of optimum nutrition chocolate, Genepro, PB2 chocolate in almond milk. It was like having a Reese's milkshake! My daughter and granddaughter liked it! I also like that there are little packets in the bag that you can put a tablespoon in and take along with you. Next up, trying it out in soup. Thanks again!

    Best Protein Powder Post Op

    genepro!! mix it into everything
  3. People mix it in sauces and salad dressing. Hot cereals, shakes, puddings. I love GENEPRO Sent from my SM-G920T using the BariatricPal App
  4. I wanted to add a positive account of my 2 weeks post-op, to give pre-op folks some comfort. After minor episodes of mild incision pain and occasional bouts of nausea as my new stomach got used to digestion again over the last 2 weeks, my body is feeling almost completely normal again. I am in awe of its ability to heal itself. - My incisions are 4 very small cuts (belly-button, sternum, left and ride side of torso) which do not hurt at all anymore. I have some itching occasionally, but I understand that this signals healing. - I can drink Water in normal larger sips now (and even if I forget and take a larger gulp, there is no discomfort) - I have almost completely gone off the taste of Protein shakes (can only manage Core Power banana milkshakes even though, as one user pointed out, these are higher in carbs, so I don't drink more than 1 a day). I get most of my protein through my vegetarian puree diet (Beans, tofu, cottage cheese, (no eggs)) and through adding GENEPRO to my 3-daily cups of tea. - I feel fullness/restriction much better now that I'm on purees (compared to when I was on full liquids - I have to guess if I'd had enough Soup as that flows through rather quickly). A couple of times I've eaten my pureed dinner a bit too quickly and have felt nauseous for 15-20 minutes. That's something to remember with the VSG surgery - your body can feel so normal after a while that you 'forget' about the limitations of your new stomach. - I've lost 14 lbs since surgery and 20 lbs since my highest weight. But mentally, I want to focus on healing rather than weight loss at this stage. I know the weight loss will come - it can't not! I see and feel slight changes in my shape already. - I took 4 weeks off work (because luckily, I could) but could have easily gone back to my office job this week. - I walk 2 miles every evening and while I'm not allowed anything more strenuous for another 4 weeks, I did help pack and unpack furniture and other bits while our home was being decorated these last 2 weeks. I also flew to the Caribbean and back (for a convalescing vacation) without any issues. Take comfort from no-complication stories like mine - as miserable as you might feel a day or two after surgery, your body is designed to snap back quicker than you think.
  5. I have GENEPRO and so far I can tolerate it. We shall see how the rest of my digestive tract takes to it. I'm so relieved at the moment. oh here is a great photo that shows my progress Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App
  6. Ok my surgery date is August 27th and I'm trying a new pureed recipe I found under this site - ricotta bake! My grand daughter helped and she loved it too! I used 4 oz glass containers but once in this stage, I wouldn't use the full container - only half. I also added 1 scoop of genepro to add more protein. Anyone tried anything else that was good? Following the rules

I'm 11 months out and I do have a large (24-32oz) protein/fiber smoothie everyday. I'm getting 30-40g Protein from that so I DONT have to think about what I eat the rest of the day. I am free to eat healthy, balanced meals and Snacks, basically whatever I'm in the mood for, whether it's protein or fruit or veggies or whole grains. I also fill a 32 oz Water bottle in the morning and make sure it's gone before I go to bed so between that and the smoothie, I'm not thinking about fluids, either. Anything else I drink during the day (coffee, tea, juice, Vitamin water, etc) is just bonus. Personally, I like creating new flavors with all my shake powders, Torani syrups, and fruit....rarely have the same thing more than a couple times/month. But if you aren't a fan of the drinks, how about adding a Quest bar into your day? That's 20g protein with just one snack. Or if you are easily able to get in enough liquid, how about adding GENEPRO protein to whatever it is you're drinking? I have never used it, but people rave about how well it mixes in anything and has zero taste. In any case, it sounds like you've had luck losing weight, now you just need to find a way to maintain and still remain healthy (and happy). Finding a way to make postop life simple and easy = long term success.

    Can we talk carbs?

My dietician recommended steel cut oatmeal for breakfast, with a splash of milk, cinnamon, Peanut Butter, or a little fruit to jazz it up rather than adding in sugar or syrup. This article discusses some of the benefits: http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/benefits-steel-cut-oats-2053.html Trader Joe's sells frozen steel cut oatmeal that is surprisingly good, and nice for a quick, 1-dish breakfast. Sometimes I'll use a crockpot to make my own batch for the week. I prefer them cold (odd, I know) with some Fair Life milk. You can stir in an unflavored Protein powder like GENEPRO, or even a flavored one that enhances the oatmeal. Definitely avoid the packaged flavored oatmeal, like those by Quaker Oats. As for how many carbs to have in a day, I think it's really individual. I was advised to aim for around 50 grams to 100 per day. I've been successful with rapidly losing weight on low carb diets, but I've never had success at sustaining that weight loss. It's too restrictive for me, and I think it is for many people. The type of carb also matters a lot, of course. I try to get most of mine from fruit, vegetables, oatmeal, and things like crisp bread. Carbs are a good way to get in some fiber.
  9. I've been using GENEPRO for a long time, almost as my sole source, all my labs have been perfect (total Protein, Albumin/Globulin.. Etc). I couldn't find any independent data on the product as well, and have even wrote them. To purify Proteins through column chromatography is nothing new, nor is electrophoresis (I'm a protein purification scientist) but I really wanted to see some data but to no avail. Maybe they are worried another company will copycat them (understandably) but at least I can go by my labs. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

Honest truth about genepro protein powder

It sounds like you're doing pretty well with the GENEPRO. I've read so many good reviews on it that I decided to go ahead and purchase a couple of sample packets so I can give it a try. Hearing good results like yours really makes me hope it works well for me. I'd like to have one Protein supplement that will work in most anything I want to put it in. May I ask....what kinds of problems are you having with meat? I haven't had my surgery yet, and it hadn't occurred to me that there could be problems with eating meat afterward. I've always been a meat and potatoes person who eats meat with every meal.

Honest truth about genepro protein powder

Has anyone actually had blood work done to check their Protein levels since starting on GENEPRO? I mean lab results from your own doctor that show it works as they claim it does? I'm interested, but their claims sound too good to be true. I don't want to take it thinking I'm getting the protein my body needs after bypass surgery and then find out it's all a sham. But I haven't seen one review yet that's supported by factual evidence of protein levels in the body after taking the product for any length of time. Have you had any other noticeable results (or problems) since you started taking Genepro?
  15. I found Genepro to be pretty tasteless, but stopped using it after a few months because of some dubious things I read online about it, and the newest version doesn’t contain as much protein as the former ones claimed to. I now use Syntrax medical unflavored. It has a slight taste, but better than several others I tried. I can’t taste it in oatmeal, pancakes, or breakfast cookies. I think it would have a taste/texture in water, though. GL!
  16. Maybe find a new doctor? A different surgeon for better advice. I think your doctor is trying to force you to lose more weight with such an extended post-op diet... maybe he sensed a lack of total self control? Eating bacon, Cereal, and milk is certainly more than your stomach can handle right now. All doctors will agree on that. Your stomach is not producing the necessary enzymes and acids to break down such rich food, and you can damage your new stomach. Everyone makes mistakes, but it's important to understand why they are mistakes and learn from them. Harshness isn't going to help you to do that, instead you'll lash out and defend your mistakes, which is not the right reaction either. That being said, at least you didn't do anything more drastic. If you're feeling weak, it's time to start experimenting with different Protein sources. They'll help and be within your dietary restrictions. GENEPRO, unjury, premier, etc etc Lots of different protein powders and shakes, there's something to suit everyone's taste! I can't handle thick textures and overly sweet either, so I love genepro because it just adds a milky taste to anything I mix it with.

    Protein powder help

Have you heard of Genepro unflavored protein powder? I was drinking the Premier Protein shakes but I got to where I just couldn't stand to take one more drink of them. I read about Genepro on here in another thread, and they were raving about how great it is, so I decided to give it a try. I love it! One scoop is only about a tablespoon, and it has 30g protein and only 98 calories. I use it in my morning decaf coffee with sweetener and sugar free creamer, and I use it throughout the day in my sugar free beverages.

    Protein Goal/Shopping List

Genepro seems pretty popluar too it is unflavored protein powder that mixes well. Lots of folks put it in their crystal light drinks in the morning. You get if from Amazon, I haven't tried it yet but it is on it's way to me now.

    Isopure problems?

I've tried Isopure, and didn't like it. I got some Genepro-unflavored off Amazon, and it's 40gms of Protein per table spoon. I mixed it in my Water bottle with crystal light peach tea, and I could only taste the peach tea!!! I found the ONE!!!

    My body feels awful...

@@Jennifer Rogers I got the Genepro protein last week from Amazon (because I have trouble getting in my protein too). It's okay. I definitely cannot put it in just anything. I didn't like it in any drinks (too much flavor when it's supposed to be flavorless) and I could taste it in cottage cheese. So far, the only thing I've had it in where I couldn't taste it was I cooked it in a scrambled egg (but only 1/2 a serving). If you find other ways to use it where you can't taste, please let me know.

    Coffee?

My Surgeon and my Nutritionist either one said anything about giving up my coffee. I would have been one to commit HAIRY SCARY!!! I love my coffee. I have my Espresso with GENEPRO unflavored Protein every day. It has 30grams of protein so for me it is a WIN WIN because I would drink my Espresso any way. I would say whatever your Dr.'s guidelines are follow them. You could ask them when and if you can have full blown coffee!!

    I hate protein shakes

Genepro does not have 30g of protein per scoop. They were actually sued (and lost) for making this (and other) false claims. I would never be comfortable supporting, or ingesting products from a company that is as blatantly deceitful to claim to have 30g of protein in 15g volume.

    I hate protein shakes

Hi @annie93. I have posted the link from this website of the protein powder I use. Its expensive but its 30G of protein per scoop which saves you money in the long run because you get more protein so that you don't have to use more scoops as other brands which have less protein per scoop. Plus I do find that it has no flavor and does not change the taste. The only thing I have noticed is that it does not blend as well in hot items. You have to make a paste with it and then add the hot to it. But it works perfectly in cold or room temperature drinks. You have to mix the protein up really well as soon as you add it to your drink because otherwise if you leave it for a bit it will form little protein flecks. I mix my daily drink at the beginning of the day with 2 1/2 scoops of this particular protein powder and that is my entire protein quota for the day right there. perfect! Buy some and give it a try - I am sure you will be pleased https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/genepro-medical-grade-protein-powder-2nd-generation

I use genepro and I love it. I add it to my glass of milk, water or yogurt. Not bad at all and it had 30 grams of protein per scoop with 98 calories. 33 bucks at gnc.
