    Metabolism after VSG

@@Kiba - one thing to consider as you experiment with your diet - you mentioned that GENEPRO is your main Protein source. I've done some digging on GenePro and I'm concerned that they may be overstating the amount of protein in their product. If this is true, you may actually be far under your protein goals. It might be worth mixing it up with different protein sources to see if this helps your loss. See here for some more discussion on GenePro: http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/320744-Honest-truth-about-genepro-protein-powder/page__view__findpost__p__4268546 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    My Hunger Has Returned!!

I use genepro and I love it. I add it to my glass of milk, water or yogurt. Not bad at all and it had 30 grams of protein per scoop with 98 calories. 33 bucks at gnc.
  3. I notice you don't say anything about drinking water. Next time you want to reach for a snack, take a drink of water instead. If you don't like plain water, add some Crystal Light. I like the Crystal Light Pure that has Truvia (stevia). It's not overly sweet and there are good flavors available. Sometimes I will mix a scoop of Genepro protein powder in a bottle of water with the Crystal Light. It's a good way to get in 30 grams of protein, 16+ oz of water and avoid eating something you really don't need. My nutritionist and doctor both stress drinking at least 64 oz of liquid every day (water, tea, milk, soup, etc.).

The need to eat until stuffed

@@ShelterDog64 -- Thank you for that helpful information! I think I'll order some GENEPRO tonight. Even at 2+ years post-op, it doesn't take much to fill me up so I want to make the most of everything I take in. Unflavored Protein powder is my newest best friend; before that it was vanilla

Check in: Week of Nov 17th Sleevers!

Hello fellow November sleevers! Surgery date: Nov 19th preop diet weight: 460 Surgery weight: 430 Current weight: 412 I had a great surgery with very little pain and almost no nausea. I keep feeling better and better everyday. I went from not being able to stand for more than 5 minutes at a time to walking 3 miles yesterday which was a huge victory for me. I am not able to eat very much about 2oz at a time and I don't even feel like eating that. I am so sick of Protein shakes the taste is just to much to even think about so I have been getting in my protein from GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder mixed into greek yogurt. It takes me all day to eat 2 yogurts (10oz) but it gets me my 84g of protein and the rest of the day I focus on my liquid intake. It is amazing to not be hungry all the time. It was also amazing to see all that food on Thanksgiving and to be happy with just my yogurt. I have been obese since early childhood and I have no idea what it is like to not be obese. I really hope I get to experience a normal BMI at least once in my lifetime. But for now I will be grateful for the ability to walk again. Being able to go on a walk with my husband and dogs overwhelmed me yesterday to the point I want to cry tears of joy as I write this. I look forward to many more tears of joy on this journey!

7 weeks post op and not hungry

90% of my hunger is "head hunger." I'm 2 weeks post OP and rarely feel true hunger (the stomach growling, aching hunger, the way hunger is SUPPOSED to feel when it is real). As far as protein, I'm getting plenty!!! I highly recommend a tasteless powder by "Genepro: next generation protein powder." The scoop is much smaller and you get a full 30 grams of protein. Plus it's less calories than most: 60 calories. I even put a scoop in my water, for real. I taste a hint of it but it is a clean, very mild taste. Add it to your broth if you're drinking that. You might try that. Powdered skim milk, peanut butter powder. Oikos zero Greek yogurt. All good options! Sent from my SM-G892U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Hungry at night?

I am the same way and it is real hunger. I keep a small snack for this. I'm not sure how you are eating during the day but it could be that you aren't get a lot of calories during the day, your stomach gets a rest for most of the evening (5 or 6 hours?) and is able to take a little something more. I have some questions on where it comes from as I started a new job last month just before Thanksgiving. I work from 4 pm until around 12-1 am but don't eat at all during my shift (I drink tons of water mixed with my genepro protein for energy though all shift long). My work is at a factory and I'm doing fast, physical work with heavy lifting. I then pick up my son after work (our family works at the same place but different buildings) and I have to wait for him. By the time I get home, I'm really ravenous but can't eat many things still. I have some mild slim jims put aside and will eat a couple of the small snack size. I can't drink anymore and still getting used to the schedule. I have to go back and pick up my husband at 4 am (he works 12 hour shifts) so I don't sleep so much but I'm not hungry again until the next afternoon after sleeping all morning until around 3 pm with my husband. Until I read your post, I thought that was the reason for the hunger but it can be just the time our stomachs can handle it after not eating for so many hours.
  9. The first thing you should have said was "the nutritionist said....." It's a bit disconcerting that the team is not on the same page. Call them out on it. Also check out other brands of protein. Syntrax and GENEPRO are popular and can be mixed with Water. I also used Prosource Nocarb while in the hospital and for the first month post-op. It's a bit viscous, but mixes well with water and herbal teas. That sounds like full liquids unless you are doing protein drink/waters. By definition clear liquids are just that, liquids you can see through. Full liquids is anything in liquid form with a leaning towards a thinner consistency.
  10. I have GENEPRO and so far I can tolerate it. We shall see how the rest of my digestive tract takes to it. I'm so relieved at the moment. oh here is a great photo that shows my progress Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App

The need to eat until stuffed

@@MrsSugarbabe I couldn't stand the smell of flavored Protein powders within a few weeks of my surgery, so I've been using the GENEPRO since July. My labs have been great!
  12. I found Genepro to be pretty tasteless, but stopped using it after a few months because of some dubious things I read online about it, and the newest version doesn’t contain as much protein as the former ones claimed to. I now use Syntrax medical unflavored. It has a slight taste, but better than several others I tried. I can’t taste it in oatmeal, pancakes, or breakfast cookies. I think it would have a taste/texture in water, though. GL!

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I agree, the full liquid phase seems to be going very slowly. I had my sleeve the same day as your revision. I started full liquids on Thursday (29th) and don't move to soft stage until August 10th. Getting tired of broths & shakes, but knowing this is temporary makes it easier. Sometimes I even feel like I wouldn't want anything to eat anyway, those times makes it easier. Then other times I really want something other than what I can have. I am looking forward to that soft food stage! (No purée stage on my plan) Yesterday, I added Genepro to my Crystal Light and my soup (half serving of genepro in each), that way I only needed 1 protein shake. Do you, or anyone else have anything they did during full liquid that makes it easier or more interesting? We'll be on to a new phase before we know it, we just got to hang in there! Hoping everyone is doing well with their progress. 😊 (Scale isn't moving as much as I thought it would my first week🙄, but it's moving)

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I'm not sure if Genepro will taste good in water, but I think some people add it to skim (fat free) milk. It is supposed to be flavorless, but there is a subtle taste to it. You can add it to sugarfree jello, too.
  18. I am prepping some 2 ounce containers for my post-op clear liquids phase. I grew tired of messing with Jello and found that I could dissolve a half scoop of Genepro in a small amount of chicken broth. The total slurry mix fits within the 2 ounce container. That would give me 15 grams of protein per serving, which is WAY more than I doctor up with my Jello attempts. Perhaps a chemist could do better, but I am done. Any reason not to do this? I have 2 containers chilling in the refrigerator now as a test run. I assume it will separate a bit, but I could just shake it. I really like the taste of the broth and don't expect the Genepro to mess with the flavor, but I know the consistency must thicken a bit. Thoughts? Thanks!

    Late June Sleeve Buddies?

For those of you that are having trouble with Protein shakes. I too find them making me feel ill post surgery. I have been using GENEPRO by Musclegen Research for over a week now and it has been great. I put it in almost everything. One tablespoon is 30 grams. So it is easy to get between 60 and 90 grams in a day. I've put it in cottage cheese, yogurt, Soup, mashed potatoes, almost everything! No taste whatsoever!! Seriously it's been great. It was recommended buy my nutritionist. I'm thankful she did. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. True, tastes change after surgery. I used Genepro and added it to a bit of Crystal Light. Sweets were gross at first. Bone broth helped. If it makes you feel better for the time being, I couldn’t keep much down for weeks (vomiting), including protein, but I made it through. So if you are in contact with your surgeon, a temporary delay in protein is doable till you make it to soft foods. GL!

    January 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I had a VSG on 01/06/23. I loss 38 lbs since the pre-op liquid phase. I consume 800-1000 calories a day and aim for 80+ grams of protein a day. I feel good. I haven't had any issues with any foods. Well except that I cannot tolerate protein shakes at all so I rely on protein rich foods. I can also tolerate unflavored Genepro in my Crystal Light and some protein bars.
  22. There are many brands of protein shakes and powders and each of them offer many flavors. Just do a google search to see what is out there. The prices varies from reasonable to ridiculously expensive, so shop around. Many can be found at Walmart or ordered online from the manufacturers or Amazon. My clinic recommends these brands (but I've tried many others): Premier Protein Ensure Max Equate High Performance Atkins Plus Musle Milke Genuine, Muscle Milk Light Boost Max Fair Life Core Power There are even high protein soup powders from ProtiDiet and Bariatric Advantage, and others. The variety is vast. Some you will like, some you won't. If you don't like something today, try it again in a week. You can also make your own high protein shakes. There are lots of recipes online, using unflavored whey protein powder mixed with milk or water, like GenePro I prefer plant-based unflavored powder, Like Orgain or Pure Protein. You can add protein powder to just about any liquid, even your coffee or tea or bullion.
  23. GENEPRO is a lifesaver for me. I can have one cup of coffee so for Breakfast, I drink my coffee & 1 scoop of Genepro. 30g of Protein. Then if I am not that hungry, I will do another scoop later in a yogurt or something. It has no flavor. It mixes well if you follow directions.
  24. Have gotten GENEPRO in the mail today, and used it in some Greek Yogurt. Impressed with it so far; it mixed in well and did not screw up the taste. It's a bit pricey, but if it works I'm sticking with it. Will definitely be worthwhile if it gets me out of the stall. For the first time in a while I'm meeting my daily Protein goal of 60 g.
  25. Thanks for the tip, I'm looking into GENEPRO and have noticed that it has almost 100% positive reviews on Amazon. When I finish my upcoming trial with unjury I think I'm going to test that.
